Wesley Love
Died: Sunday, May 26, 2002

ATHENS -- Wesley "Love" Dayton Love, 91, of Renick, W.Va., formerly of Nitro, W.Va., died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at his home in Renick. He was born Dec. 24, 1910, in St. Joseph, Mo.

He is survived locally by a daughter, Zoe Love Sands; granddaughters Melody Sands and her husband Dan Gates, and great-grandsons Nicholas, Alexander and Ethan; Cynthia Sands Chalfant, and grandchildren Gabriel, Joel and Rebecca; Kimberly Sands, and grandchildren Ann Cathlene Shaw Anderson and husband Sid of Jamestown, Tom Horn of North Carolina, Chad Sands of Seattle, Brittany Sands of Cleveland and Chris Phillips of Athens; Linda Sands Nicolai and husband Luc of Los Angeles, Calif., and grandchildren Julian and Melissa.

Services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg, W.Va. Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery, Renick.

George Malone Jr.
Died: Tuesday, March 12, 2002

ALBANY -- George Edward Malone Jr., 56, of Albany Route 3, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.

Born Dec. 14, 1945, in Coalton, he was the son of Hazel Marcum Malone of Wellston and the late George E. Malone Sr. He also is survived by his wife, LaCreda Slone Malone, and a daughter, Clareda Henson.

Services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at Jenkins Funeral Home, Wellston. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Verl Ogg
Died: Tuesday, March 12, 2002

NELSONVILLE -- Verl H. Ogg, 76, of Nelsonville, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Logan Health Care Center, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

He was born Jan. 6, 1926, in Stewart, son of the late Herman and Audrey Johnson Ogg. He was the husband of Patty Jane Shelton Ogg of Nelsonville.

He was retired from Ogg Wholesale of Nelsonville and was a member of Nelsonville United Methodist Church, where he was very active as a Sunday school teacher and lay leader. He also was a member of Nelsonville VFW Post 3467 and Nelsonville Masonic Lodge. He was a former president of Athens County Library Board.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, David (Debra) Ogg of The Plains, and Nicholas (Janet) Ogg of Lancaster; a daughter, Nanette (James) Lavery of Cary, N.C.; six grandchildren, Christopher David (Julie) Ogg, Benjamin Joseph Ogg, Sarah Elizabeth Ogg, James Verl Lavery, Nathan J. Ogg and Janette Jane Lavery; two great-grandchildren, Drew Christopher Ogg and Dawson Manning Ogg; four step-grandchildren, Matt and Carrie Eckels, Tara and Lindsey Somers; and a sister, Naomi (Jack) Maurer of Nelsonville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Douglas Ogg; a daughter-in-law, Jo Anita Ogg; and his mother- and father-in-law, Royal and Cabe Shelton.

Services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at Nelsonville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Carlson officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Nelsonville, with military graveside services conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.

Friends may call at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville on Friday, from 5 to 9 p.m., where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Society of Central Ohio, 3600 Tremont Road, Columbus, 43221.

William Sams
Died: Tuesday, March 12, 2002

BELPRE -- William Rich Sams, 77, of Belpre, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 25, 1924, in Belleville, W.Va., he was the son of the late David Walton and Mary Rue Sellers Sams. He was retired from Boilermakers Union 667 out of Charleston, W.Va., and was a dairy and beef farmer. He started the Antique Tractor Rodeo at Belleville Homecoming, loved woodworking and was a member of the Antique Power Association. He loved family and friends and was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

He was a member of VFW Post 1212 and American Legion Post 64 in Marietta, a World War II veteran who served in the Navy, Army Air Force and Air Force, a member of Guysville Masonic Lodge and a past 4-H leader.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Bettjean Sams; three daughters, Cynthia Goff and her husband, Michael, of Parkersburg, W.Va., Candy Schoonover of Parkersburg and Denice Foraker and her husband, Ron, of Belpre; two sons, Rikey Sams and his wife, Jackie, of Belpre, and Roy Sams of Coolville; 11 grandchildren, Amanda Lewis, Adam Chapman, Travis, Ryan and Chad Schoonover, Rachael and Matthew Foraker, Melissa Arnold, Ricky and Jimmy Sams, and Justin Sams; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Sams of Vienna, W.Va., Clarence Sams of Guysville and Reynerd Sams of Belpre; four sisters, Dorothy Smith, Alice Mahaffey and Lucille Mahaffey, all of Parkersburg, and Pauline Bolin of Guysville; several aunts, nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers.

Services will be held at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg on Friday, 11 a.m., with the Rev. R. Michael Goff officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home today, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association.

Wilbert Barber
Died: Monday, March 11, 2002

REEDSVILLE -- Wilbert Barber, 80, of Reedsville, died Monday, March 11, 2002, at his residence.

Born Jan. 22, 1922, in Reedsville, he was the son of Lola Reed Barber and the late Delbert Barber. He also is survived by his wife, Gladys, and a son, Robert.

Services will be Friday, 11 a.m., at White-Moquin Funeral Home, Coolville. Burial will be in Heiney Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Richard Hall
Died: Monday, March 11, 2002

TOMBALL, Texas -- Richard W. Hall, 66, beloved husband of Patricia A. Hall, lost his battle with lung cancer on Monday, March 11, 2002.

Besides his wife, other survivors include sisters Rita Hysell and Carla Kelzenberg, both of Ohio; daughters Gwen Smith-McGill of Nebraska, and Barbara Hopson and granddaughter, Paige Hall, both of Texas.

Richard's son, Randy, preceded him in death.

A memorial service to celebrate Richard's life was held today at Klein Funeral Home in Tomball.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in Richard's name.

Melford Smith
Died: Monday, March 11, 2002

MILLFIELD -- Melford Thomas Smith, 53, of Millfield, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 11, 2002, at Veterans Administration Hospital, Chillicothe.

Born March 14, 1948, in Athens County, he was the son of Lura Evelyn Holdcroft Smith of Millfield and the late Alfred Gail Smith. Mr. Smith was employed at Pepsi Bottling Co. in Athens, was a graduate of Athens High School and a member of The Plains Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7174.

A U.S. Marine, Melford served our country from 1966 to 1970. Melford was a true and loyal Marine, obeyed his orders and was wounded in an explosion during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Device.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Isaac Thomas Smith of Millfield, Jerome Lee Smith and special friend, Lacey Rogers, also of Millfield; his former wife, Nancy Balch, and her son, Joseph Barnes, of Athens; a granddaughter, Daisy Jones Smith of Millfield; a sister, Mary (Dan) Lucas of Athens; a brother, Russell (Dee) Smith of Athens; several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Dennis Faught officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield, with military rites conducted by the Combined Honor Guard.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.

James VanWranken
Died: Monday, March 11, 2002

NELSONVILLE -- James Robert VanVranken, infant son of Clay and Christina Timberlake VanVranken of Nelsonville, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents Charles and Wilma Timberlake of Nelsonville; paternal grandparents Scott and Sandy VanVranken of Pomeroy; and several aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held at a later date, at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville.

Ruthie Jordan
Died: Sunday, March 10, 2002

POMEROY -- Ruthie J. Jordan, 32, of Columbus, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at her residence.

Born Jan. 11, 1970, in Columbus, she was the daughter of Ida Mae Conway Jordan of Columbus and the late Phillip D. Jordan.

Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Ewing Funeral Home in Pomeroy. Burial will be in Reedsville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

William Whaley
Died: Sunday, March 10, 2002

ATHENS -- William Donaldson Whaley, 91, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Athens, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Brighton Gardens in Venice.

Born Jan. 19, 1911, in Athens, he was the son of the late William D. and Lenora Masheter Whaley. Mr. Whaley was a graduate of Ohio State University. He was involved in real estate sales prior to his retirement. A former resident of Hebbardsville and Columbus, he had lived in Venice since 1979.

He is survived by a son, John Whaley of Virginia Beach, Va.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irma May Fisher Whaley, in 1994; and a brother, James W. Whaley.

Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Denver Dodrill officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday one hour prior to the service.
