Roy Franklin Riffle
Died: Friday, May 2, 2003
Age: 65

LONG BOTTOM -- Roy Franklin Riffle, 65, of Long Bottom, died Friday, May 2, 2003, at his residence.

Born May 3, 1937, in Racine, he was the son of the late Floyd and Lela Cook Riffle.

He is survived by his wife, Frona Bissell Riffle; a son Bruce Riffle, and daughters Pamela J. Rose, Betsy Kearns, Brenda Riffle and Julie Riffle.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Fisher Funeral Home, Pomeroy. Burial will be in Meigs Memory Gardens.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Farmers Bank, Route 7, Tuppers Plains, Ohio 45783.

Stanley Robert Sycks
Died: Wednesday, February 26, 2003
Age: 93

ATHENS -- Stanley Robert Sycks, 93, of Akron, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Akron City Hospital.

Born Jan. 27, 1910, in Chauncey, he was the son of the late Edward and Florence Hall Sycks. He was a Navy veteran and served aboard the USS Baltimore during World War II.

Mr. Sycks was a retired carpenter and remained a member of Carpenters Local Union 639 of Akron, being recently acknowledged for 65 years.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lydia Margaret Weiss Sycks; sons Roy R. of Akron, Daniel L. (Ida) of Uniontown and Lawrence A. of Akron; a daughter, Jane L. Rutan of Akron; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Weekley of Hebron; and brothers Harold Sycks and Jack Sycks of Athens.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Lavina Sycks, Marjorie Tittle and Thelma Green; a brother, Lawrence Sycks; an infant son, Charles Edward Sycks; and a son-in-law, Jim Rutan.

Services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

Ruby Clary
Died: Tuesday, February 25, 2003

McARTHUR -- The angels opened up the gates of Heaven and welcomed Ruby Clary as she passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Heartland of Chillicothe.

She was born Sept. 4, 1916, and was the daughter of the late Brack McKee and Margaret Lillie Denney Henderson.

She is survived by a daughter, Ragene Y. Scaggs; a son, Richard A. Clary; and a loving son-in-law, James Mallow, all of Chillicothe; and sisters Georgia Bethel of McArthur and Mildred Binkley of Columbus. Ruby was the precious grandmother of 13 grandchildren and also was blessed with 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd H. Clary, on Dec. 13, 1974; a son David D. Clary; daughters Phyllis Mallow and Karen Rose Clary; brothers Charles, Clyde and Richard Henderson; sisters Mae Routte, Wilda Richards, Portie and Mary Marie Henderson; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday, at 1 p.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, from 4 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lebanon Church, in care of Kimberly Carpenter. Contributions may be mailed to Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur.

Ruby will remain in the memories of so many, for she loved to be surrounded by family and friends.

James Raymond Frisby
Died: Tuesday, February 25, 2003
Age: 84

WELLSTON -- James Raymond Frisby, 84, of Wellston, died on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at University Hospital, Columbus.

Born in Jackson County on May 29, 1918, he was the son of the late James Harrison and Roxie Meacham Frisby. He is survived by a daughter, Betty Ousley, and sons John, and Robert Frisby. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Wills Frisby, and children Richard, Mary and Ralph.

Services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home, Wellston. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 371 of Wellston.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

William Pearl Guess
Died: Tuesday, February 25, 2003
Age: 85

LOGAN -- William Pearl Guess, 85, of Logan, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at his daughter's home in Venice, Fla.

He was born Dec. 17, 1917, in Hocking County.

Services will be Monday, 11 a.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Richard S. Lawless
Died: Tuesday, February 25, 2003
Age: 70

SHADE -- Richard S. Lawless, 70, of Shade, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 25, 2003, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, after an extended illness.

Born Feb. 10, 1933, in Ironton, he was the son of the late Bernard N. and Margaret Hogsten Lawless. He was a 1951 graduate of Ironton High School and a 35-year resident of Shade.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Gossett Lawless, whom he married on June 18, 1954; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Beth and Jason Baron of Coolville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Nancy Lawless of Stewart, and William and Rochelle Lawless of Middleport; three grandchildren, Cara, Delana and Travis Lawless; two sisters, Wanda Allen and Lois Warren of Chesapeake; two brothers and their wives, Tom and Jane Lawless and Bob and Marlene Lawless, all of Ironton; a brother-in-law and his wife, Donald and Beverly Gossett of Ironton; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with minister Willard Love officiating. Entombment will be in Athens Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Thomas R. Leifheit
Died: Tuesday, February 25, 2003

KIRKERSVILLE -- Thomas R. Leifheit passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at his home in Kirkersville, with his best friend, J.R., by his side.

Born Nov. 20, 1942, he was the son of Helen Grim Carper and the late Sidney Leifheit. Tom graduated from Linden McKinley in 1960. In addition to driving a truck for more than 15 years, Thomas was a member of the Free Methodist Church of Columbus for more than 50 years, and a member of Carpenters Local 200 for 35 years. He was a superintendent over numerous commercial jobs in the greater Columbus area.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Schmitt.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his stepfather, Charles Carper; sisters Joyce Leifheit of Franklin and Sidney (Mark) Fouty of Granville; a stepbrother, Reed Carper; many aunts and uncles, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

Services will be held Saturday, 9 a.m., at Schoedinger East Chapel, 5360 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 that afternoon at Burson Cemetery, Athens County.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m.

Edgar Eugene Smith
Died: Tuesday, February 25, 2003
Age: 82

GLOUSTER -- Edgar "Pudd" Eugene Smith, 82, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Northview Nursing Home, Johnstown.

He was a retired mechanic for Commercial Motor Freight, a member of Bishopville Church of Christ, AARP, Glouster Senior Citizens and Antique Car Club of Ohio (1923 Nash).

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sarah Tuck Smith; daughters Sheila (Doug) Conley of Johnstown, Sally (George) Serio and Dixie (Dave) Shortland, all of Pickerington; sons Allen (Joy) Smith of New Albany and Louie Smith of Grove City; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Max (Dorothy) Smith of Salem Center; several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Services will be held Friday, 10 a.m., at Long Funeral Home, 5528 Cleveland Ave., Columbus, with Pastor Bill Danielson officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery, Galloway.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 9 p.m.

Mary Ann Stafford
Died: Tuesday, February 25, 2003
Age: 60

LONG BOTTOM -- Mary Ann Stafford, 60, of Long Bottom, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Parkersburg, W.Va.

Born April 12, 1942, in Columbus, she was the daughter of the late Willis Sr. and Mary Belle Boysel. She was the widow of the late Charles E. Stafford Sr.

She is survived by her stepmother, Tessie Mae Boysel; two sons, Charles E. (Donna) Stafford of Lower Salem and Timothy S. (Katrina) Stafford of Marietta; five daughters, Sharon Stafford, Linda (Mike) Cannon, Teresa Stafford and Darlene (John) Seevers, all of Marietta, and Marlene (Nick Barber) Kesselring of Long Bottom; 13 grandchildren, C.W., Michael, Misty, Alisha, Jennifer, Ember, Erica and Kyle Stafford, John David and Amanda Seevers, and Donovan, Kacie and Kristina Cannon; and three great-grandchildren, Jordin Stafford, Hunter Maze and Haley Jane Griffin; and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and three sisters.

Services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster, with the Rev. Michael Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from noon until the time of service.
