Edward Eugene Hughes
Died: Sunday, August 31, 2003
Age: 67

REEDSVILLE - Edward Eugene Hughes, 67, of Reedsville, died Sunday morning, Aug. 31, 2003, at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus.

Born June 7, 1937, in Long Run, W.Va., he was the son of the late Mildred Putman Clem and George Hughes. He was formerly employed by Paul Peterson Co. and retired from Walker Wire Mold after 32 years. He was a member of White’s Chapel Church, was an avid fisherman and hunter, and was a dedicated father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Esther “Jeanie” Watkins Hughes; two daughters, Kimberly (Dennis) Durst and Mechele (Tony) Roush; a granddaughter, Katie Ann Durst; five grandsons, Terry and Mathew Durst, Tony Jr., Chad and Nakota Roush; three sisters, Diane (Donald) Barnhouse, Carla (Jon) Bartlett and Kathy (Bill) Barnhouse; a brother, John (Carol) Clem; his mother-in-law, Thelma Watkins; a brother-in-law, Joseph Runyon; and a sister-in-law, Paul (David) Brewer.

Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Carl Clem; two grandsons, Paul and Bradley Durst; and a nephew, John Clem Jr.

Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville, with Pastor Phil Ridenour officiating. Burial will be in Heiney Cemetery, Reedsville.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the funeral home.

Focie L. Hayman
Died: Sunday, August 31, 2003
Age: 86

LETART - Focie L. Hayman, 86, of East Letart, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant.

Born March 2, 1917, in Angeroni, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Elisha and Lillie Mae Casto Stover. She is survived by sons Ted, Don and Keith Hayman, and daughters Lillie Mae Hart, Linda Jewell and Phyllis Young.

Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at Cremeens Funeral Home, Racine. Burial will be in Letart Falls Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

A. Irene Goodwin
Died: Saturday, August 30, 2003
Age: 86

ALBANY - A. Irene Goodwin, 86, of Newark, died suddenly on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, from complications of heart and kidney failure.

Born March 27, 1917, in Shinnston, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Olonzo Lawrence and Edna Whiteman. She was a graduate of Albany High School, where she met her beloved husband, Lawrence E. Goodwin. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on June 26, 2003.

She was a proud mother, wife and homemaker who was heavily involved with her children as an active participant in the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, PTA and other elements of their childhood, including extensive travel throughout the United States. She was a sales associate for John J. Carroll’s Department Store in Newark for 10 years and a member of St. John’s Church of Christ in Newark, where she enjoyed the Women’s Circle, various church activities and numerous friends for more than 50 years.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence E. Goodwin; daughters Jacqueline Lee (Harry) Steeves of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ruth Ann (Douglas) Cromwell of Colorado Springs; a son, Joseph Lawrence (Carol Kuhman) Goodwin of Dublin, Ohio; grandchildren Scott (Amber) Cromwell, Hope Elizabeth (Eric) Hamre, Anna Paige Steeves, Todd Owen Steeves and Holly Jean (David Little) Steeves; great-grandchildren Anna Marie Hamre, Leah Jean Hamre and Noah Todd Hamre; a sister, Margaret Jean Steward; brothers-in-law Arnold Goodwin and Walter Grigsby; a sister-in-law, Betty Jane Prince; numerous nieces and nephews; longtime friends in Newark and Athens County, and new friends at Trillium Place in Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Whiteman; sisters Virginia Grigsby, Mildred Storch, Dortha Michaels and Ruth Whiteman; and sisters-in-law Margaret Fekete and Marjorie Goodwin.

Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark, with Pastor Winfield Strout officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s United Church of Christ, 285 W. National Drive, Newark; the American Heart Association; or the National Kidney Foundation.

Anna M. Maddox
Died: Monday, September 15, 2003
Age: 69

LOGAN - Anna M. Maddox, 69, of Logan, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, in Logan.

Born May 10, 1934, in Columbus, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Beulah Thompson Shepherd.

She is survived by sons Ed Richards, Blane Allen Maddox and Gene Maddox; and a daughter, Susan Wilson.

Services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Logan.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

John H. McColley
Died: Sunday, September 14, 2003
Age: 64

GLOUSTER - John H. McColley, 64, of Glouster, died Sunday evening, Sept. 14, 2003, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg, W.Va.

Born Dec. 4, 1938, he was the son of the late Volley and Annie McClain McColley. He is survived by a brother, Arthur McColley of Glouster; a sister, Verna Mae Rutter of Redtown; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clarabell McColley; several brothers and sisters.

Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Marla Rutter officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at Jacksonville Veterans of Foreign Wars post, at a date to be announced.

Alice W. Kuhn
Died: Sunday, September 14, 2003
Age: 85

LOGAN - Alice W. Kuhn, 85, of Logan, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, in Columbus.

Born Jan. 31, 1918, in Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late Francis J. and Flora B. Conkle Kuhn.

Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Rockbridge United Methodist Church. The body will be entombed in Crestview Mausoleum, Forest Rose Cemetery, Lancaster.

Friends may call at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church on Thursday one hour prior to the service.

George I. Howdyshell
Died: Sunday, September 14, 2003
Age: 93

LOGAN - George I. Howdyshell, 93, of Lancaster, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Lanfair Center, Lancaster.

Born Jan. 12, 1910, in Perry County, he was the son of the late Wayland J. and Effie Ann Tucker Howdyshell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Beerman Howdyshell.

Private services will be held Tuesday at Ebenezer Cemetery, Perry County. Arrangements are by Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan.

A. Orman Mays
Died: Sunday, September 14, 2003
Age: 80

REEDSVILLE - A. Orman Mays, 80, of Reedsville, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at his residence.

Born Aug. 30, 1923, in Reedsville, he was the son of the late Aldro and Deliah Bailey Mays. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Mays; six sons, Steven, Jackson, John, Kenneth, Richard and Robert K.; and a daughter, Connie Comuzie.

Services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Success Cemetery, Reedsville. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are by White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville.

Nina M. Boston
Died: Sunday, September 14, 2003
Age: 77

REEDSVILLE - Nina M. Boston, 77, of Reedsville, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, W.Va.

Born Jan. 4, 1926, in Reedsville, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Flossie Dorst Petty. She was a dairy farmer and homemaker, and a member of Reedsville United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

She is survived by three children, Patricia Boston and Dale Boston of Reedsville, and Steve (Cathy) Boston of Newburgh; three grandchildren, Jonathan, Faith and Jenna Boston; three sisters, Dorothy Petty, Dessie Walls and Mary Harris; and a brother, William Petty.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marion; a son, Joseph; and a sister, Rita Baker.

Graveside services will be held today, 11 a.m., at Reedsville Cemetery. Arrangements are by White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Reedsville United Methodist Church.

Norvel J. Brown
Died: Sunday, September 14, 2003

JACKSON - Norvel J. Brown of Jackson, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at James Cancer Center, Columbus.

Born Aug. 9, 1940, in Jackson County, he was the son of Olive F. Brown and the late Joseph R. Brown. He also is survived by children Dennis, Roger and Melinda.

Services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m.

Gerald James Rainer
Died: Sunday, September 14, 2003
Age: 86

STOCKPORT - Gerald James Rainer, 86, of Stockport, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at his residence.

Born Dec. 21, 1916, in Trimble, he was the son of the late Hiley Armstrong and Lula Mae Williams Rainer.

He is survived by a son, Curtis Rainer; and a daughter, Myrta Rainer.

Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home in Chesterhill. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery.

Nicholas Ryan Wheeler
Died: Saturday, September 13, 2003
Age: 24

RADCLIFF - Nicholas Ryan Wheeler, 24, of Radcliff, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 8, 1978, he was employed by Duncan Construction of Jackson and was a member of Sons of American Legion Wilkesville Post 476.

He is survived by his parents, Kevin and Michelle Hoctor Muncy of Radcliff; his father, Robert W. (Chris) Wheeler Jr. of Adamsville; children Zachary and Laura May Wheeler of McArthur; his girlfriend, Loretta Bobo of Wilkesville; brothers Kevin Muncy Jr. and Mitchelle (Jennifer) Wheeler of Radcliff, and Derick Wheeler of Adamsville; sisters Tessa Muncy of Radcliff and McKenzie Wheeler of Adamsville; grandparents Robert and Janice Wheler of Sonora, Rex and Mickey Collins of Radcliff; and a close aunt, Kathy (Doug) Weisel of Chillicothe.

Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with the Rev. Fr. David Gwinner officiating. Burial will be in Radcliff Cemetery.

Robert E. Scheel
Died: Sunday, October 12, 2003
Age: 78

LORAIN - Robert E. Scheel, 78, of Amherst, a former Athens resident, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003.

Among his survivors are his wife, Jane Grover Scheel; sons Timothy R. and John B. Scheel; and a brother-in-law, B. Tad Grover of Athens.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Evangelical Church, Lorain. Arrangements are by Hempel Funeral Home, Amherst.

Contributions may be made to First Lutheran Evangelical Church, 603 Washington Ave., Lorain 44052.
