Jeanette Mary Payne
Died: Tuesday, August 05, 2003
Age: 81

Jeanette Mary Payne, 81, of Wilmington, died Tuesday (Aug. 5, 2003) at Clinton Memorial Hospital, Wilmington. She is survived by her husband, Richard Lee Payne. They were married in 1953.

Mrs. Payne was born July 4, 1922, in Newport, “God’s country,” daughter of the late Alfred Edward and Alma Schwartz Simon. She graduated in 1941 from Versailles High School, in 1944 from St. Elizabeth Nursing School in Dayton and in 1951 from the University of Dayton with a bachelor of science degree in nursing education. She served in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps from 1945 to 1946. She worked at several Dayton area hospitals and from 1972 until she retired in 1985, she worked at Clinton Memorial Hospital, Wilmington. She was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church, Wilmington American Legion Post 49 and Wilmington VFW Post 6710.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Michael (Cindy) Payne, Patrick (Pamela) Payne and Stephen (Emily) Payne, all of Wilmington; a brother, Wayne Simon of Piqua; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Eileen Ann Byers; and two brothers, Walter “Bud” Simon and Edward Simon.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, 73 N. Mulberry St., Wilmington, the Rev. James M. Wedig officiating, with entombment at David’s Cemetery, Kettering, where the Wilmington American Legion Post 49 memorial squad will accord full military honors. Visitation will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clinton Memorial Hospital Foundation, Diabetes Fund, 610 W. Main St., Wilmington, 45177.

Gertrude Waits
Died: Monday, August 04, 2003
Age: 98

Gertrude Waits, 98, of Dayton, formerly of New Vienna, died 10 a.m. Monday (Aug. 4, 203) at Kettering Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry J. Waits.

Mrs. Waits was born July 11, 1905, in Martinsville, daughter of the late Ulysses S. and Florence Elliott Moon. She taught school in Clinton and Butler counties for 13 years. She also gave piano lessons to many New Vienna area young people. She had attended Wilmington College. She was a longtime member of the New Vienna United Methodist Church, where she was pianist and organist for many years. She was a member of the New Vienna Senior Citizens.

She is survived by a son, James F. (Evelyn) Waits of Miami Township, Montgomery County; two grandchildren, Stephanie (Mark Anthony) DeRyke of Miamisburg and Elaine (Ted Allen) Gladeau of Miamisburg; and two great-grandchildren, Brittany DeRyke and Danielle Gladeau, both of Miamisburg.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Burch Moon, and a sister, Vesta Keever.

Services will be held noon Friday at L. EUGENE SMITH AND SON FUNERAL HOME, state Route 73, New Vienna, the Rev. Michael Barthel officiating, with burial in the New Vienna I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Vienna United Methodist Church.

Robert "Bob" Jesse Shanholtz
Died: Monday, August 04, 2003
Age: 83

Robert “Bob” Jesse Shanholtz, 83, of Wilmington, died 9:22 p.m. Monday (Aug. 4, 2003) at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Juanita M. Shanholtz. They were married Aug. 5, 1943.

Mr. Shanholtz was born Nov. 20, 1919, in Chester Township, Clinton County, son of the late Clifton Garrett and Mary Jane Hinkins Shanholtz. He was a lifelong farmer and transporter of livestock and a school bus driver for Kingman High School. He served as a volunteer for Clinton Memorial Hospital and was a trustee for Springfield Friends Cemetery. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the 2nd Armored Division during World War II, participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He graduated in 1938 from Kingman High School. He was a member of Jonah Run Baptist Church, Sharon United Methodist Church and Wilmington Church of Christ. He was a beloved father.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Larry Monroe (Virginia) Shanholtz of Wilmington; three daughters, Sandra Lee (Carrolle) Doughman of Wilmington; Roberta Jane (Thomas) Ketchin of Charleston, S.C., and Kay Janell (Jonathan) Walt of Wilmington; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Olive Mae Shanholtz and Margaret Henshew.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, Keith Dimbath and Roger Hilbert officiating, with burial in Springfield Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

The Rev. Hanley Ozell Pinson
Died: Thursday, September 18, 2003
Age: 81

The Rev. Hanley Ozell Pinson, 81, of Blanchester, died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at Arbors of Milford in Milford. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Cyrus Pinson of Blanchester. They were married for 58 years.

The Rev. Pinson was born Jan. 13, 1922, in Sciotoville, son of the late the Rev. U.S. Pinson and Ethel Artrip. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater with the Marines. He attended Marshall University, Southwestern Baptist Theology Seminary and graduated with a master’s of divinity degree from Bible Baptist Seminary. He pastored churches in Ohio, Kentucky and Texas. He was a member of the Woodville Baptist Church and DAV Valley Chapter 109 in Cincinnati.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Carol (Tom) McGinnis of Ft. Mill, S.C., Stephen Pinson of Cincinnati and John Mark Pinson of Morrow; a sister, Helen Jo Wetherbee of Erlanger, Ky.; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Woodville Baptist Church, 10970 Woodville Road, Blanchester, Brother Bill Webb officiating, with interment in Graceland Memorial Garden in Milford. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at TUFTS SCHILDMEYER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Main St., Blanchester. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodville Baptist Church, 10970 Woodville Road, Blanchester, 45107.

Hanna Marie Breckel
Died: Thursday, September 18, 2003

Hanna Marie Breckel died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at Clinton Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 18, 2003, at Clinton Memorial Hospital, daughter of Christopher A. and Casey Bain Breckel of Sabina.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Teresa and Roger Bain of Sabina, Ken and Lydia Breckel of Lynchburg and Jack Slayton and Pamela Breckel of Columbus; and her great-grandparents, Sam and Marie Clouse of West Chester, Charles and Gerri Breckel of Wilmington and Betty and Arthur Pauley of Sabina.

Arrangements for a graveside service on Saturday are pending at LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina.

Ellen VanMatre McReynolds Smith Thompson
Died: Wednesday, September 17, 2003
Age: 96

Ellen VanMatre McReynolds Smith Thompson, 96, of Wilmington, died Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) at her farm home. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Thompson, who died in 1982.

Mrs. Thompson was born Feb. 4, 1907, in Harveysburg, daughter of Edwin Charles Smith and Marjorie McReynolds. She taught school in Reesville and Martinsville. She was a founder of the Sharon Mother’s Club in Kingman. She graduated from Kingman High School and graduated in 1929 from Wilmington College. She was a member of Alpha Phi Kappa social sorority. She had a keen interest in history and was a descendent of settlers of the Northwest Territory. She was a paternal descendant of pioneer Methodist minister and circuit rider the Rev. James Trabue Smith of Manakintown, Powhatan County, Va., who founded in 1797 Hamilton County, Newtown and settled Waynesville. Her grandfather was John Quincy Smith of Wilmington, who was a U.S. congressman, commissioner of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and consul general to Montreal. She was a maternal descendant of Cincinnati’s VanMatre family and granddaughter of Cincinnati physician Dr. William Henry McReynolds. James George Smith of Wilmington, her great-uncle, founded in 1840 Beta Theta Pi, a men’s social fraternity at Miami University. Her husband was son of an Irish immigrant and he owned the farm on which she lived, which had been in the family for over a century.

She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Guerin Thompson Barns of Anderson Township, Cincinnati; two sons, William Patrick (Penelope Mott) Thompson and Richard (Pamela Patton) Thompson of Wilmington; grandchildren, Elizabeth Brunson, Charles and Stephen Barns, Hillary and Megan Thompson, Robert (Dr. Jill) Thompson, William (Kimberly) Thompson and Marianne (Troy) Diels; eight great-grandchildren; two cousins, Bruce Smith and Judy Smith Miller of West Chester; a niece, Carolyn Sue Smith Motes of McLean, Va.; and a nephew, Steven Smith of Oolteway, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald M. and Horace W. Smith.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington, with burial in Sugar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chester Township Fire Department, Clinton County Historical Society or Clinton Memorial Hospital Foundation.
