May Krauss Kemper
Died: Saturday, May 31, 2003
Age: 89

May Krauss Kepner, 89, of Wilmington, died 8:30 a.m. Saturday (May 31, 2003) at her residence. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Morgan Kepner.

Mrs. Kepner was born May 17, 1914, in Auburn, Pa., daughter of the late the Rev. Howard H. and Susan Kriebel Kraus. She was a public schoolteacher at Blanchester and Wilmington schools until her retirement. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Wilmington, WELCA, Church Women United and the Progress Club. She graduated with a teaching degree from Wilmington College, where she was a member of the Green Key Honorary Society.

She is survived by two sons, John (Sharon) Kepner of Redding, Calif., and Gary (Vicki) Kepner of Carmichael, Calif.; three daughters, Diana (Oscar) Moore of Willits, Calif., Fran (David) Watts of Greenville and Susan (Curtis) Thorkelson of Akron; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church, 421 E. Vine St., Wilmington, the Rev. June M. Fryman officiating, with interment at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, Hand Bell Memorial Fund, 421 E. Donald L. Haines
Died: Friday, May 30, 2003
Age: 85

Donald L. Haines, 85, of Martinsville, died 9:50 p.m. Friday (May 30, 2003). He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice W. Haines, who died Jan. 18, 2000. They were married Aug. 16, 1941.

Mr. Haines was born April 17, 1918, at home in New Burlington, son of the late Luther Grant and Edith Laird Haines. He farmed in Clinton County throughout his life. He was a charter member of the Antique Power Club and proudly drove his John Deere tractors in parades throughout the state. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He cherished his family and friends. He was a birthright member of the Caesar Creek Friends Meeting, and after moving to Farmers Road, he and his wife became active members of Martinsville Friends Meeting. He served Wilmington Yearly Meeting of Friends faithfully in many capacities and had taken a special interest in the camp at Quaker Knoll. He also served as a trustee at Wilmington College.

He is survived by his stepmother, Leota C. Haines of North Carolina, who will soon be 100 years old; a son, Aldon (Carol) Haines; a daughter, Faye (Ron) Mahaffey; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Mangen, Kristen McKenna and Paula Haines; and four great-grandchildren, Brittany McKenna, Kendra McKenna, Logan Mangen and McKayla Mangen.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul Richard Haines; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Blair Haines; and a sister, Phyllis H. Hollingsworth.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Kelly Center at Wilmington College, Wilmington, the Rev. Dennis Humphreys and Regina Haag officiating, with burial in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kelly Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Wilmington Yearly Meeting of Friends for Quaker Knoll Camp, 251 Ludovic St., Wilmington, 45177. Madeline Rhodes
Died: Wednesday, May 28, 2003
Age: 95

Madeline Rhodes, 95, of Greenfield, died 7 a.m. Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at her residence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles C. Rhodes, who died Feb. 8, 1993.

Mrs. Rhodes was born March, 7, 1908, in Fayette County, daughter of Sayler and Emma Bowers Clevenger. She had retired from the U.S. Shoe Factory. She was a member of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by a stepsister-in-law, Charlotte (Raymond) Brown of Hillsboro, and a cousin, Gerald (Dale) Bailey of Hillsboro.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the MURRAY-FETTRO FUNERAL HOME, 380 Jefferson St., Greenfield, the Rev. Wendell Vermillion officiating, with burial in Whiteoak Grove Cemetery in Fayette County. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Errol Dean Harris
Died: Saturday, March 15, 2003
Age: 75

Errol Dean Haines, 75, of near Wellston, Okla., died March 15, 2003 at his home.

Mr. Haines was born Oct. 2, 1927, in the Waynesville-New Burlington area, son of Everett E. and Ruth Carey Haines. He taught music at Martinsville School for a time, and later taught in New Mexico and Lompoc, Calif. After he retired, he purchased a home near Wellston, Okla. At the time of his death, he was a councilman in the small community of Fallis. He attended Kingman elementary school and graduated from Friends Boarding School in Barnesville. He received a bachelor’s of arts degree from William Penn College in Oscaloosa, Iowa, and a master’s in music education degree from Northern Colorado University in Greeley. Music enriched his life and he loved sharing that appreciation with others. An avid listener to classical music, he often attended musical events in California, where he contributed reviews to the local newspaper, and in Dallas and Tulsa during his retirement years. He was a birthright member of Caesar Creek Meeting of Friends and recently had attended the Friends Meeting in Oklahoma City.

He is survived by a brother, Willard E. Haines of Xenia; a sister, Esther Jean Martin of Zionsville, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Haines of Waynesville and Audrey Haines of Sabina; nine nieces and nephews; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Haines and Carey L. Haines.

Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at Sugar Grove Cemetery, Charles Ellison officiating.

Tom Shaw
Died: Tuesday, July 15, 2003
Age: 56

Tom Straw, 56, of Wilmington, died 8:07 p.m. Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton. He is survived by his wife, Joyce E. Straw.

Mr. Straw was born May 11, 1947, in Lorain, son of the late Leon J. and Ethel Noster Straw. He was employed by Airborne Express. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Vietnam War.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Tommy Straw of New Vienna; three daughters, Tina Straw Miller of Lorain, Victoria Straw of Columbus and Kelly Straw, at home; two sisters, Mariam (Antonio) Herrera of Amherst and Leora Straw of Lakewood; and two grandchildren, Jay Miller and Quinn Miller.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Straw.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, with burial in Sugar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Charles Leonard Shaw
Died: Tuesday, July 15, 2003
Age: 89

Charles Leonard Shaw, 89, of 820 E. Center St., Blanchester, formerly of 161 Bernard Road, New Vienna, died 1:15 p.m. Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at Continental Manor, Blanchester. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary A. “Jonnie” Murphy Shaw, who died March 17, 1996. They were married Feb. 1, 1936.

Mr. Shaw was born June 2, 1914, in Clinton County, son of the late Charles Homer and Nancy Ellen Rotroff Shaw. He had retired from the Randall Company. He was a former bookkeeper at Union Stockyards in Hillsboro and a former hog buyer for the New Vienna Stockyards and Collins Packing in Greenfield. He was a member of the New Vienna Church of Christ and had been a past deacon and past elder of the church. He graduated from New Vienna High School.

He is survived by a son, Duane (Betty) Shaw of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Darlene (Roger) Young of Blanchester and Sue (Jerry) Davis of New Vienna; 14 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great-grandchild.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dave Shaw; a sister, Cordelia Frost; and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the New Vienna Church of Christ, 148 West Street, New Vienna, Dan Knisley and Sidney Clay officiating, with burial in the New Vienna I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Vienna Church of Christ, P.O. Box 241, New Vienna, 45159; Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, 45420; or New Vienna Senior Citizens, P.O. Box 315, New Vienna, 45159. Arrangements are under the direction of L. Ann L. Wical Bayless
Died: Monday, July 14, 2003
Age: 73

Ann L. Wical Bayless, 73, of Wilmington, died 9:10 p.m. Monday (July 14, 2003) at Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Cleveland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Bayless.

Mrs. Bayless was born Dec. 23, 1929, in Port William, daughter of the late Homer “Curly” and Reva Pickering Wical. She sold Sarah Coventry jewelry. She was a member of the Clinton County Senior Center and the A Street Church of God in Wilmington.

She is survived by two sons, Ernest “Bill” (Regina) Bayless of Wilmington and Paul Bayless of Wilmington; a daughter, Bonita (Daniel) Holbert of Wilmington; a brother, Don (Mary) Wical of Wilmington; a sister, Bernice Fitzpatrick of Wilmington; two sisters-in-law, Eltie Wical and Arlene Bayless, both of Wilmington; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Bayless and Ray Dixon, both of Wilmington; nine grandchildren, Bryan Bayless, Phil Bayless, Jarod Bayless, Josh Bayless, Bridget Bayless Coady, Jacy Bayless Gaddis, Sabra Bayless Gaddis, Danell Bayless Holbert and Eli Daniel Holbert; five great-grandchildren, Jordon Bayless, Tyler Bayless, Lauren Bayless, Kylie Bayless and McKenzie Coady; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James Bayless, and a brother, Dick Wical.

Services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, Pastor Bob Johnston officiating, with burial in the New Maple Grove Cemetery, Port William. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Nora Jean McConnaha
Died: Monday, July 14, 2003
Age: 80

Nora Jean McConnaha, 80, of Wilmington, died 1:25 a.m. Monday (July 14, 2003) at Wilmington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 28, 1923, in Highland County, daughter of the late Homer C. and Mildred Wallace McConnaha.

She is survived by a brother, Harold L. McConnaha of St. Mary’s; two sisters, Mary Lewis of Wilmington and Joan (Dick) McKay of Hillsboro; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, H. Wallace McConnaha.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the New Market Cemetery, New Market, the Rev. John W. Beers Jr. officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilmington Nursing and Rehabilitation Residence, 75 Hale St., Wilmington, 45177. Arrangements are under the direction of REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington.
