Kierra Nicole Embree
Died: Sunday, September 22, 2002

Kierra Nicole Embree, 3 months, of Midland, died Sunday (Sept. 22, 2002) in the emergency room at Clinton Memorial Hospital.

Miss Embree was born June 1, 2002, in Wilmington, daughter of Randell James of Wilmington and Angela Embree of Midland.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by four brothers, Austin Myles Embree, Caleb Michael Embree, Jordan Michael James and DeVonte Marcel James; her grandparents; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, with burial in Clinton Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Janet L. Smith
Died: Sunday, September 22, 2002
Age: 65

Janet L. Smith, 65, of Piketon, died Sunday (Sept. 22, 2002) at her residence. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd S. Smith. They were married Dec. 13, 1965.

Mrs. Smith was born April 25, 1937, in Sabina, daughter of the late Howard and Anna Scowden Spurlock. She retired from the Pleasant Hill Manor Nursing Home in Piketon. She attended the Sabina Church of Christ in Christian Union. She attended Sabina High School.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, David E. (Nancy K.) Smith of Leesburg, Scott H. (Jill L.) Smith of Sabina and Jody J. (Karen S.) Smith of Waverly; 10 brothers, Estel and Paul Spurlock of New Vienna, Guy, Jim and Dale Spurlock of Sabina, Wayne Spurlock of Orlando, Fla., John and Terry Spurlock of Wilmington, Roger Spurlock of Hillsboro and Larry Spurlock of Leesburg; two sisters, Marcy Laufer and Roxie Woods of Sabina.

Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday at White Oak Cemetery, Fayette County. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina.

John Ross Jr.
Died: Thursday, September 12, 2002
Age: 60

John Ross Jr., 60, of Sinking Spring, died Thursday (Sept. 12, 2002) at University Hospital in Cincinnati.

He was born in Waynesville on Aug. 14, 1942, son of the late John Henry and Blanche Ann Younker Ross. He retired from Kil Kar as a mechanic. He was a member of Hillsboro Eagles Lodge 1161.

He is survived by a daughter, Velvet Roberts of Hillsboro; a son, John Kelly Ross of Sabina; four grandchildren; a brother, Hubert Ross of Bainbridge; and two sisters, Alma Medley of Harveysburg and Marcella Ross of Wilmington.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, William H. Ross, Raymond E. Ross and Archie Ross; and a sister, Thelma Dayton.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at the LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina, with burial in Miami Cemetery in Corwin. Visitation was 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Angelea Renea Thompson
Died: Thursday, September 12, 2002
Age: 35

Angelea Renea Thompson, 35, of Fort Lauderdale,

Fla., formerly of Wilmington, died 4:54 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 12, 2002) as the result of an accidental drowning in Florida.

She was born June 8, 1967, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Charles L. and Wanda Kay Stout Thompson. She was a 1985 graduate of Wilmington High School.

She is survived by her mother, Juanita Eggers of Wilmington; four brothers, Bobby Jordan of Sardinia, Jimmy Jordan of Sardinia, Benny Eggers of Wilmington and Dempsey Eggers of Wilmington; four sisters, Cheri Jordan of Wilmington, Renae Bellamy of St. Paris, Maria Wolfe of Clarksville and Kecia Shaffer of Wilmington; and by several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be scheduled later at the convenience of the mother. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St. in Wilmington.

Margaret Ruth Whited
Died: Thursday, September 12, 2002
Age: 76

Margaret Ruth Whited, 76, of New Vienna, died 2:54 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 12, 2002) at Greene Memorial Hospital, Xenia. Her husband, Elmer Arthur Whited, died June 10, 1988. They were married Aug. 7, 1948.

Mrs. Whited was born Dec. 6, 1925, in Jeffersonville, daughter of the late Stanley and Maude Moore Ross. She was well known in the New Vienna area for her talent as a quilter. She made quilts for people from New York to California. She was a very dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She attended Jeffersonville Public Schools.

She is survived by two sons, Michael E. (Debbie) Whited of Hillsboro and Samuel L. (Sandy) Whited of New Vienna; two daughters, Connie Vickers of Wilmington and Julie (Mark) Jodrey of Winchester; a sister-in-law, Helen Ross of Washington Court House; a brother-in-law, Paul King of Perry, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and an aunt, Thelma McAuliffe of Washington Court House.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Ross; and a sister, Wanda King.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in the New Vienna I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Sidney Clay officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Olive Church of Christ, Mad River Road, New Vienna. Arrangements are under the direction of L. EUGENE SMITH AND SON FUNERAL HOME, State Route 73, New Vienna.

Harold E. Curtis Sr.
Died: Wednesday, September 11, 2002
Age: 78

Harold E. Curtis Sr., 78, of Wilmington, died Wednesday (Sept. 11, 2002) at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He is survived by his wife, Mary Curtis of Wilmington.

He was born Sept. 27, 1923, in Clinton County, son of the late Carl and Rosa Adams Curtis. He was a life member of Wilmington V.F.W.

Post 6710 and a member

of Wilmington American Legion Post 49. Mr. Curtis was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the 1st Cavalry Division in the South Pacific. He was the owner of Curtis Paint and Wallpaper Company in Wilmington.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Harold E. Curtis Jr. of Sabina; a daughter, Tedra Brannon of Wilmington; a sister, Mary Ruth Bosier of Wilmington; a brother, Earl Curtis of Oakland; five grandchildren, Shannon Curtis, Meredith Curtis, Kimberly (Ali) Moore, Tracy (Roger) Boldman and Jarred Simpson; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Curtis was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil Curtis and Raymond Curtis, and a sister, Virginia Cook.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington, with David Stokes officiating, and burial in Sugar Grove Cemetery where American Legion Memorial Squad will conduct full military honors. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

H. Owen Smith
Died: Monday, September 9, 2002
Age: 78

H. Owen Smith, 78, of Wilmington, died Monday (Sept. 9, 2002) at Kettering Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Caplinger Smith, whom he married Oct. 19, 1946.

He was born March 29, 1924 in Allegheny County, Va., to the late Floyd H. and Myrtice Coleman Smith. He retired from General Motors. He was a member of the Wilmington Church of Christ, and a former member of the Sabina Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon, song leader, elder and Sunday School teacher. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, David (Susan) Smith of Wilmington; a daughter, Debbie (Martin) Woodruff of New Vienna; and three grandchildren, Tracy Smith, Brad (Angela) Woodruff and Megan Woodruff.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin Smith.

The funeral service will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Friday at the LITTLETON FUNERAL HOME, 104 N. Jackson St., Sabina, with burial in the

New Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilmington Church of Christ (Christian), 909 W. Locust St., Wilmington, 45177.

Marjorie F. "Aunt" Behrman
Died: Sunday, September 8, 2002
Age: 93

Marjorie F. "Aunt" Behrman of Norwood died peacefully Sept. 8, 2002, at the Jewish Hospital in Kenwood.

A resident of Norwood for all of her 93 years, she was known and loved as "Aunt" by her family and her many friends. Her memory is cherished by the many students she taught at North Norwood Elementary between 1934 and 1970. In her later years, she devoted herself to civic and charitable activities, and to her expert cooking, gardening and quilting.

She is survived by a sister, Emily Buchanan of Wilmington; four nephews and nieces; seven grand-nephews and grand-nieces; and two great-grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John Donald "Don" Behrman.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zion United Church of Christ, Indian Mound and Montgomery Road, Norwood. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity. The TREDWAY-POLLITT FUNERAL HOME of Cincinnati is serving the family.
