Nora Mae Landis
Nora Mae Landis, age 84, of Hartville, passed away Sunday night, June 9, 2002 in St. Luke's Lutheran Home. She was born one of 12 children in Jackson County, TN, on April 1, 1918 to the late John & Lena (Moore) Roberts. Nora had worked in the cafeteria in Hartville Elementary and retired from the kitchen and laundry of St. Luke's Lutheran Home. She was a member of Hartville Church of Christ where she loved attending services. Preceded in death by her first husband, Jessie Allen in 1961. Survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Rodger Schray of Hartville, Lena and Dennis Petty of Scottsville, KY; sons, Charles Allen of Tampa, FL, and Jerry Allen of Copley, OH; siblings, Reba, Clifton, and Cordell; and grandchildren, Shawn Schray, Gabriel Petty, Ryan and Nicki Petty, Collin Allen, Todd Allen, and Jody Allen. Friends may call Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9:00 PM in the Arnold Funeral Home Hartville. Funeral Services will be Thursday 11:00 AM in the funeral home with Dean Miller officiating. Final Resting Place is Clark Cemetery in Gainesboro,TN where a committal service will be held Friday. Willie Evans Sr.
Elder Willie Evans, Sr., age 69, went home to be with the Lord on Friday June 7, 2002, at Aultman Hospital, following an extended illness. He was born in Bovina, MS, on January 30, 1933, the son of the Elijah Evans, Jr., and Mary Jackson-Jones. He came to Canton, OH, in the early 1960s and was employed as a steel grinder at Canton Malleable in Canton, OH, and after they closed, at Ohio Cast Products. He accepted Christ as a young man and became an ordained elder in the Church of God in Christ. He served faithfully under the pastorage of the late Elder Lee Nucklos at Pentecostal Temple COGIC for many years. He founded Victory Temple COGIC in Cleveland, OH. In 1994, he founded God’s House of Grace COGIC here in Canton, OH, where he served steadfastly and faithfully. He was also well known throughout various states as a gospel singer and praise leader. Elder Evans believed in the power of prayer in any situation and never doubted God’s Word. He always had an encouraging word for any situation, and would never hesitate to spread the gospel where ever he went. Both his words and his life exemplified his Christian walk. He never lost sight of the fact that this life was just a journey leading him to his heavenly home, and that God was with him every step of the way. He was preceded in death by both his parents; a daughter, Lillie Evans; two sisters, Alberta Jackson and Eva Mae (“Sug”) Jones; one brother, Bernard Jones; and his adopted mother, Ruth Jackson Williams who raised him. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 19 years, Tonya Evans of the home; two sons, Gregg Turner of Knoxville, TN., and Willie Evans Jr. of Canton, OH; one adopted son, Gyasi I. Evans; and one adopted daughter, Ronita (Justin) Williams both of Canton; one step-daughter, Beverly Mathis of Oklahoma City, OK; two stepsons, Lee Minor of Canton and Carmen Minor of Oklahoma, OK; seven sisters, Leora (Robert) Hopson, Paralee Bowman, Irene (Henry) Gamble, and Gladys (Dennis) Reid all of Albion, MI, Robbie (“Bee”) Evans of Atlanta, GA, Irma J. Barnette of Brockton, MA, and Jean Fair Williams of Los Angeles, CA; three brothers, Elijah Evans, Jr., Robert Earl Evans, and Tommie (Sandra) Evans all of Albion, MI; five sisters-in-law, Cynthia Phillips, Monique (Melvin) Cain, Crystal Gilchrist, Yahyana (Otis) Patrick, Aisha Webb all of Cleveland, OH; mother-in-law, Carmelita Webb; father-in-law, Ronald Webb both of Cleveland, OH; three grandchildren, Gregg Turner, Jr. of Battlecreek, MI, Malik Turner of Knoxville, TN, and Nyri Williams of Canton; a host of other relatives and his God’s House of Grace Church family. Services will be held at Community Life COGIC, 1104 Walnut Ave NE, Canton, OH on Thursday June 13, 2002 at 11 a.m. Calling hours will be at the church one hour before the funeral. Eulogy by Bishop Clifford Kimbrough, OH, NE Jurisdiction COGIC. His assistant pastor, Elder James Chester, officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Albion, MI on Friday, June 14, 2002. Dorothy F. Reed
Dorothy F. Reed, age 69, of Canton, OH, passed away Monday morning in Altercare of Louisville following a brief illness. Born in Statts Mill, WV, on Sept. 6, 1932, she had been a resident of Canton since 1985. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Canton. Survivors include her husband, Dencil Reed of the home; four children and spouses, Danny Westfall of Liverpool, WV, Randy and Cathy Westfall of Rome County, WV, Donny and Norma Westfall of Sandyville, WV and Sue and Charles Bowman of Ravenswood, WV; four stepchildren and spouses, Debbie and Steve Price of Louisville, OH, Ken and Lori Reed of Louisville, OH, Bonnie and Jim Forrest of Louisville, OH and Keith and Gail Reed of Bolivar, OH; two sisters, Olivia Casto and Mamie Bell Stalnaker and two brothers, Edsel and Foster Casto, all of Statts Mill, WV; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Calling hours at the Reed Funeral Home Wednesday 7-9 p.m. Additional calling hours will be held from the Parsons Funeral Home in Ripley, WV on Thursday 6-9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. from the Siniaville United Methodist Church in Statts Mill, WV, with Rev. Ron Howard officiating. There will be calling hours at the church on Friday from 12-1 p.m. Burial will be in Siniaville Church Cemetery.

Rosalie F. Peterson
Rosalie F. Peterson, age 80, of North Canton, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, North Canton, North Canton Book Club, and many other charitable organizations. Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Tanalynne and Lorin Sickafoose of North Canton; sister, Evelyn Short of Colorado Springs, CO; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband, Mauritz “Pete” Peterson and their son, Lt. Mark A. Peterson. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, 349 Lindy Lane, North Canton with Pastor David Scharf officiating. There will be no calling hours. John E. Conley. Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Faith United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Dry Ridge Cemetery, Thursday in Shellsburg, PA. Friends will be received Tuesday (tonight) 7-9 p.m. in Karlo & Sons, 512 South Main St., and one hour prior to services at church. Grace Edith Garver
Grace Edith Garver, age 103, of Strasburg, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002. Grace was born December 6, 1898 to Zeno and Dora (Snell) Miller on a farm in Canaan Twp., Wayne County, OH. She graduated from Creston High School in 1917, attended Wooster College and Ohio University and taught school for six years before her marriage to John B. Garver of Strasburg on June 21, 1923. Formerly a member of the Jackson Presbyterian Church, Grace joined the Strasburg United Brethren Church shortly after her marriage and was director of the church choir for over 60 years. She was a charter member of the Women’s Club of Strasburg, past president of the Ladies Auxiliary to Charles Hofer American Legion Post #522, and a 70 year member of the McDowell Music Study Club. Grace was a member and past Worthy Matron of Cypress Chapter #540, Order of the Eastern Star and Deputy Grand Matron of District 14, O.E.S. In 1978, she was honored as Sesquicentennial Queen of Strasburg’s 150th anniversary. In 1992, Grace was recipient of the Strasburg United Methodist Church AGAPE Award. Grace is survived by two daughters and a son, Elizabeth Jolie of North Beach Haven, NJ, Josephine (Dale) Bichsel of Cincinnati, OH and Colonel (Ret.) John B. Garver, Jr. of Bethesda, MD; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and daughter-in-law, Meredith; two half sisters, Ruth Thompson and Lois Erdos. The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 15 at 11 a.m. in the Strasburg United Methodist Church, Strasburg. Calling hours will be Friday, June 14, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home at Dover and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Miriam E. Maurer
Miriam E. Maurer, age 77, a resident at the Canton Christian Home, passed away Sunday afternoon in the Canton Christian Home following a brief illness. Born in Canton on August 9, 1924; she was the daughter of the late, Roy and Lesta Colledge. She was a 1942 graduate of McKinley High School; and a former employee of the Lawson, Co., Philomatheon Society of the Blind and Rice Pharmacy in Canton. She was a Charter member of the Perry Christian Church, had been active in the Greenwood Christian Church and Jackson Christian Church and currently was a member of the First Christian Church of Canton. Miriam was the former choir director at Perry, Greenwood and Jackson Christian Churches and helped with the choir at the Canton Christian Home. She was the founder of the “Tell It” singers. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Gene S. Maurer who passed away January 7, 1998; and a son, Terry Scott Maurer in October 1994. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Susan Maurer of State College, PA; and her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and David Lipely of Columbiana, OH; there are eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the First Christian Church of Canton with her son, Pastor Todd Maurer, Craig Anderson, Ron Iwanusa and Larry Burgett both of the Canton Christian Home officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Calling hours at the Reed Funeral Home on Tuesday (TODAY) 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Canton Christian Home.

James R. Koehler
James R. Koehler, age 87, of North Canton, OH, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2002, at St. Lukes Lutheran Community. Born in Canton, OH, May 13, 1915 to the late George J. and Elta M. Koehler. Mr. Koehler was a WWII veteran and retired Vice-President of Northeastern Inc. of Canton. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, George J. Koehler; sisters, Zella Roth, Helen Klingler, Kathryn Swanson, Marjorie Peters; son, James R. Koehler II; and son-in-law, Richard Shalvoy. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia M. (Harrington) Koehler; daughters and sons-in-law, Michele MacFarlane of Sylvania, Claudia and Joe Zino of North Canton, Mariane and Wayne Otto of Canton; and son, John G. Koehler of Los Angelas, CA; five grandchildren and their spouses and children,; Jack and Carla, Garrett, Audrey and Grant Patterson, Chris and Scott, Tyler, Jessica and Regan Lantz, Cindy and Dan and Sam McFadden, Drew and Miles Shalvoy and Gavin and Chace Shalvoy. There are numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Koehler wished to be cremated and there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be in the chapel at St. Lukes Lutheran Community on Sat. July 6, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the St. Lukes Lutheran Community at 220 Applegrove St NE, North Canton, OH 44720 or to the charity of choice. The family would like to thank everyone who participated in the care of Mr. Koehler.

Warren C. Offineer
Warren C. “Cotton” Offineer. Services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Schneeberger Funeral Home with James S. Hill, Pastor of First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will follow in Warstler Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Friends will be received Tuesday (tonight) 7-9 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. in the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be made to First Church of the Nazarene.

Lloyd Leatherberry
Lloyd M. Leatherberry, 79, of Augusta, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at his home after an extended illness. He was born May 7, 1923 in Augusta Twp., Carroll Co., the son of the late Embert and Lilly Hawkins Leatherberry. Lloyd lived his entire life and died in the house where he was born. He was a farmer and a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Carrollton, the Carroll County Farm Bureau and the Carroll Co. Ruritan Club. He was also a trustee of the Carroll Electric Board for 42 years serving as president for the last two years. He was on the Board of Trustees for Ohio Rural Electric for 40 years. He served the National Rural Electric as Director for 14 years. In 1950, he proudly received an award for small farm winner from the State Soil Conservation Project. On June 27, 1942 he married Dorothy Arnold, who survives and they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in two weeks. Also surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Russ and Pat Leatherberry of Augusta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bob Morris of El Cajon, CA and Sheila and Jim Reese of Chicago, IL; a brother, Paul Leatherberry of Columbus, OH; two sisters, Bernice Ebner of Atlanta, GA and Erla Courtheyn of Augusta; five grandchildren, Kevin Morris, Kimberly Fisher, Jason Reese, Sam and Heidy Leatherberry; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbur and Victor Leatherberry and one sister, Josephine Iden. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Carrollton First United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles Naylor and Rev. Mark Statler officiating. Burial will follow in Augusta Cemetery. Friends may call 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday at the Allmon-Dugger & Hively Funeral Home in Carrollton and one hour before the service at the church. Willette Stanford
Willette Stanford, age 77, passed away Friday evening, June 7, 2002, at Manor Care of Canton where she had resided for the past eight months. Born September 6, 1924 in Greenville, MS. Preceded in death by her parents, former husband, James Stanford; and five aunts. She had resided in Canton since 1946. She was a beautician and retired from the Canton Club after many years of service. She was a faithful member of People’s Baptist Church where she served as church announcer and senior usher board until her health failed. She leaves to cherish her memory three brothers, Robert L. (Muzette) Singleton of Canton, Pat Singleton of Massillon, Percy Gill of Chicago, IL; one sister, Hattie Cables of Chicago, IL; one aunt, Eva White of St. Louis, MO; a very special nephew and niece, James Jones of Canton and Betty Lee of St. Louis, MO; many other nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends. Calling hours 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at Brogdon & Son Funeral Home, 1617 3rd St. NE, Canton, OH. Services Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at 8 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Myrtle Strickland
Myrtle Strickland, age 83, formerly of Canton and El Paso, TX, died June 8, 2002, in Green Meadows Health and Wellness Center after a long illness. Preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Florence Drowns; one brother, Bud; one sister, Evelyn Tebay; and one granddaughter, Tamara Ickes. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Patricia Ickes; grandson, Steve (Terri) Ickes; and great-granddaughter, Katherine Ickes all of Canton; there are three nieces, Barbara and Linda of California, and Sue of Westlake, OH. At her request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services and her body will be cremated.

Brenda Dell Salmen
Brenda Dell Salmen, age 55, died Sunday afternoon following a lengthy illness with diabetes. Born in Sevierville, TN, she had resided in Canton most of her life. A member of First United Church of Christ, she was preceded in death by her mother, Marghee Wear Walters; father, Paul P. Salmen; stepfather, Ralph W. Walters. Survivors include a brother, Paul B. (Linda) Salmen, Sr. of Louisville, OH; three sisters, Jeannette Eddy of Canton, Susan Young of East Canton, Mrs. Joseph (Mildred) Poor of Hiram, OH; brother-in-law, Charles Young of East Canton; three stepsisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Pam) Sterling of Canton, Mrs. James (Jean) Muckley of Louisville, Mrs. Tom (Karen) Keen of Navarre; longtime friend, Dave Dianu; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Spiker-Foster-SHRIVER Funeral Home, 710 Tuscarawas St., W., with Rev. William Seymour III officiating. Interment in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Friends may call Tuesday (tonight) 7-9 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.

Nadine Canterbury
Nadine June Canterbury, age 80, of North Canton, died Monday, June 10, 2002 at St. Luke Lutheran Home. She was a member of St. Jacob Lutheran Church, Mudbrook, before joining Redeemer Lutheran Church in Florida after Carl’s retirement. Survived by her husband of 62 years, Carl Canterbury; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne M. and Michael Baxter of Massillon; son, Ronald W. Canterbury, Sr. of Canton; grandchildren, Ronald Canterbury, Jr., Tom Canterbury, Colin O’Brien and Corey O’Brien; five great-granchildren; a sister, Wanda Hinderer of Lake Cable. Preceded in death by his parents, May and Chester Sieber. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at 10 a.m. in the Karlo-Feucht Funeral Home, 5000 Everhard Rd. NW, with Pastor Lynn Williamson officiating. Friends may call one half hour before the services at the funeral home. Arnold Willaman
Arnold G. Willaman, age 83, a life resident of North Canton, died Sunday evening in Aultman Hospital. He retired from North Canton Public Schools in 1984 and was a member of SERO Retirement Chapter. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Betty of the home; daughter, Pam Haines of Navarre, sons and daughters-in-law, Dave and Betty of Canton, Gary and Linda of Jackson Twp. and Dennis and Peggy of Freeburg; grandchildren, Darryl, Jeffrey, Kevin and Kate Willaman, Jason and Melissa Haines; sister, Carolyn (Dean) Warstler; brother, Max (Joan) Willaman; Uncle Tom (Marge) Willaman, all of North Canton. Preceded in death by parents, Ralph and Sylvia Willaman and brothers, Brooks and Dwight Willaman. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday in the Karlo & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Msgr. Garnet V. Zahler
Garnet “Jenny” V. Zahler, age 76, of Louisville, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 8, 2002 Aultman Hospital following and extended illness. Jenny was born June 1, 1925 in Boomer, WV, to the late Barren H. and Ethel (Manley) Petry. She was a former waitress at the German-American Club and a member of the V.F.W. Post #7490 Women’s Auxiliary. Jenny was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Canton. Jenny leaves behind her husband of 58 years, Carl Zahler whom she married May 13, 1944; two daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and David Unsworth of Canton and Sandra Bourquin and her husband, Ron Paumier of Louisville; a son and daughter-in-law, David C. and Monica Zahler of Louisville; three sisters, Beulah Stocker of Canton, Nettie Mills of Wooster, Della Ralston of Wooster and Judy Mulligan of Minerva; two brothers, William Petry of Ellet and Pat Petry of Waynesburg; 11 grandchildren; great-grandchildren and a very special loving friend, Pearl Garn. She is preceded in death by a sister, Pagney Pennix; a brother, Robert Petry, a great-granddaughter, Samantha Abdulla and a son-in-law, James Bourquin. Funeral services for Jenny will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the Paquelet-Falk Funeral Home with Pastor George Keeler of the First Lutheran Church of Canton officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
