Alice M. Johnson
Alice M. Johnson, passed away on May 26, 2002 in Mercy Medical Center. She was born in Clio, AL, and had lived in the Canton Community a majority of her life. She was a dedicated member at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband, Robert Johnson; and mother, Charlie Reese. Mrs. Johnson leaves many memories to son, Tony (Angela) Reese; daughters, Tatianna Johnson, Sharlene Gourick, Umbola Griffith, Carol Williams, Patty (Jerry) Williams all of Canton; brother, Perry (Gene) Flowers of Neptune, NJ; sister, Latricia McDowell of Canton; brothers-in-law, Frank (Margaret) Johnson of Canton, Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson of Columbus, OH; special friends, Dorothy Jackson and Grace Bell; and a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Friday May 31, 2002 at 12 Noon at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 1403 13th St. NE, where Pastor C.A. Richmond will be officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service. Condolences may be sent to and procession will form at 432 Gobel Ave. SE, Canton, OH 44707. Interment in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

Anthony Tony Sciotto Jr.
Anthony Tony Sciotto Jr. age 58, of Canton, passed away suddenly on Sunday evening May 26, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center. Born in Altoona, PA. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Mercy Medical Center and was a member of the Stark County Republican Party Central Committee. Preceded in death by his father Anthony P. Sciotto Sr. Survived by his wife, Jean Sciotto, this August they would have celebrated their 4th wedding anniversary; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Brett and Marcie Sciotto of Columbus, Eric Sciotto of New York; mother, Suzanne Sciotto of Altonna, PA; and two sisters. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Welch-Sekeres-Lewis Funeral Home. Rev. Raymond L. Tucker will officiate. Entombment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday (Tonight) 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. His fun, loving and generous spirit lives on in all those who knew him. Contributions may be made to the Tony Sciotto Legacy Fund.

Austin J. Schafrath
Austin J. Schafrath, age 83, of Richville, passed away Sunday evening at Meadow Winds Nursing Home in Massillon. He was born April 24, 1919 in McDonaldsville to the late Leo and Clara (Rohr) Schafrath and has been a life resident of the area. He served in the Army during World War II with the 763rd tank battalion. Austin was a 41 year employee of the Timken Company as a truck driver. He was a member of St. Clement's Catholic Church, the Perry Grange and the Farm Bureau. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Edna McCoy and Delores Schafrath; brothers, Norman, Earl, Paul Schafrath. He is survived by his wife, Onita (Holl) Schafrath of the residence with whom he would have shared 56 years of marriage on June 1; children and their companions, Alice Stroup and Richard McKenzie of Dover, Kenneth and Mary Jo Schafrath of Canton, Wayne and Pat Schafrath of Canton, Dennis and Theresa Schafrath of Beach City; brothers and sisters, Ralph Schafrath of Florida, Donald and Violet Schafrath of Rhode Island, William and Nancy Schafrath, David and Wanda Rohr, Catherine Moritz, and Mary Kearney, all of Wooster; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Clement's Catholic Church, his pastor, Fr. Robert Gibas and Rev. Langley Collins will officiate. Burial will be at St. Clements Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday 6-9 p.m. at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon.

Daniel C. Smith Sr.
Daniel C. Smith Sr., age 57, of East Sparta, died Monday in the Mercy Medical Center, following an extended illness. Son of the late William A. and Dorothy B. (Lyden) Smith. He was an East Sparta resident since 1964, and employed by Republic Engineer Steel for 38 years. Attended the Canton Baptist Temple. Survived by his wife, Sharyn J. (Nestor) to whom he was married 41 years; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley and Mark Holder of Canton, Kimberly Smith of Canton; one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel C. and Lisa Smith Jr., of Navarre; two grandchildren, Luke and Lisa Holder; one sister, Kathleen Gilman of Abilene, TX; one brother and sister-in-law, Peter J. and Lenora Smith of Orlando, FL. Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in the Kreighbaum- Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave. Interment in Melscheimer Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers Memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation at 1373 Grandview Ave Ste 200, Columbus, OH. 43212.

Edith P. Reese
Edith P. Reese. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Billington officiating. Burial will be in the Melscheimer Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home on Wednesday (tonight) 6-9 p.m.

Elizabeth L. Cunningham
Elizabeth L. Cunningham, age 89, of Minerva, died Tuesday morning at Green Meadows in Louisville following a short illness. She was born June 10, 1912 in Springfield to Raymond and Zoe (Fasig) Beach. She was a housewife and member of the Unity Church of Truth in Massillon. She graduated from Springfield High School. She is preceded in death her husband, Norwin Cunningham, who died October 1, 2000; three sisters, Lee Smith, Myrl Klug and Ruth Schrader. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Joy) Kelley of Sunbury and Mrs. Bruce (Joan) Bryan with whom she resided; a son, Gary and wife, Linda Cunningham of Frazier Park, CA; a sister, Phyllis Love of Birch Run, MI; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Liberty Cemetery near Minerva with Rev. Patricia Lee officiating. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Unity Church of Truth in Massillon.

Ethel K. Muntz
Ethel K. Muntz, age 92, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Hennis Care Centre in Dover. She was born July 8, 1909 in Oakdale, PA, to the late Arthur L. Kaltenborn, Sr. and Effie G. Bower Kaltenborn. Mrs. Muntz was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She was past worthy Matron of the former Orange Chapter No #302, Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Muntz served for 45 years as a board member of the American Cancer Society Tuscarawas County Unit and was very active in Reach to Recovery, which provides support and information to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence L. Muntz, in 1997; a daughter, Margaret Proefrock; son, Arthur Harvey Muntz; and a brother, John B. Kaltenborn. Mrs. Muntz is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Ethel G. Katoll of Sherrodsville; a brother, Arthur L. Kaltenborn, Jr. of Kent; ten grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be on Friday, June 1, 2002 at 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. with the Eastern Star Service conducted at 8:45 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home. The memorial service will be on Saturday, June 2, 2002 at 11: 30 a.m. in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 202 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, with Pastor Michael E. Walters and Mrs. Muntz's nephews, Rev. John Muntz and Rev. James Browne, officiating. Immediately following the memorial service, a meal will be shared in the church. Glen C. Fowler
Glen C. Fowler, age 88, of Canton, Ohio, passed away Monday morning in the Country Lawn Nursing Home following a brief illness. Born in Canton on June 1, 1913, he was a 1934 graduate of McKinley High School. He was a retired employee of the Canton Repository, retiring November 30, 1976, after 42 years of service. Following his retirement he worked for the M.K. Morris Saw Co. in Canton. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #341, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #233, and the Canton Ex-Newsboys. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Joyce L. Fowler of Canton; two daughters and son-in-law, Patricia and Mike Mashchak of Canton and Deborah Fowler of Canton; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Blanche Fowler of Canton; a sister, Ardell Beaudry of Burke, VA., and brother, Leroy Tubby Fowler of Canton; there are seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church. There will be calling hours at the Reed Funeral Home on Thursday evening 6-8 p.m. The K. of C. will hold services Thursday at 6:15 p.m. His wishes were to be cremated following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Canton Ex-Newsboys.

James H. White
James H. White, age 30, of Salt Lake City, UT, passed away unexpectedly early Sunday morning in the home. Born in Canton to James R. and Anna M. (Breighner) White, he lived most of his life in the Canton area, then relocated to Salt Lake City in pursuit of higher education. James was a member of the First Baptist Church, later joining the Church of the Master. A 1989 graduate of Louisville High School; a veteran, he also served in the United States Air Force for several years. He studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Utah and was a member of the Who's Who of American College Students in the year 2000. After an internship with the Lockheed Martin Corp. of Akron, he currently worked for the Salt Lake City Tribune as a Software Engineer. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James H. White, his maternal grandparents, Gerald O. Breighner and Virginia (Breighner) Martin and by one uncle, Richard Breighner and Richard's daughter, Margret. Besides his parents, survivors include two brothers and sister-in-law, Ron D. and Lynne White of Berea, OH, Shawn White of Salt Lake City, UT; one nephew, Connor White of Berea, OH; three uncles and their spouses, David and Dianne White of Burke, VA, Russell and Margret Breighner of Arlington, VA and Charles Breighner of Oldtown, MD; three aunts and their spouses, Jean and Donald Rice of Cumberland, MD, Alice and Brian Mackereth, also of Cumberland and Phyllis Twigg of Carpenteria, CA; many cousins also surviving. James is loved by many of his friends, family members, peers, and will be greatly missed by all of them. Funeral services will be conducted in the Kight Funeral Home in Cumberland, MD, on Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Lukes Lutheran Cemetery in Cumberland. Calling hours will be in the Reed Funeral Home Thursday 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, 925 S. Main St., North Canton, OH 44720.

Joseph R. Czech
Joseph R. Czech, age 88, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 26, 2002, after a long illness. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was born on January 7, 1914, in East Vandergrift, PA. He was preceded in death by parents, Joseph and Mary Czech, sisters, Veronica, Bertha and Mary and brother, Stanley. He is survived by his devoted wife, Laura, to whom he was married 60 years; loving son, Richard and daughter-in-law, Donna; grandchildren, Michael, Paul, Daniel and Melinda Czech; and great-grandson, Tucker Daniel Czech; brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Micki Czech, Edward and Margaret Czech; sister, Stella O'Hara; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. Family members will meet at 1 p.m., one hour before services to be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 30th at the Welch-Sekeres-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Ronald M. Klingler, Pastor of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church will officiate. Burial immediate following at Calvary Cemetery.

Neoma Keller
Neoma J. Nete Keller, age 86, of Canton, OH, passed away Sunday evening in the McKinley Life Care Center following an extended illness. Born in Frankfort, IL, on November 27, 1915 she had lived the greater portion of her life in the Canton area, moving here from the Akron area. Mrs. Keller was a retired wholesaler florist, having owned and operated the United Floral Supply in Canton, until retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church in Canton, and a member Delta Chapter #539 Order of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine of Jerusalem #54. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, two brothers and her husband of 58 years, Chester S. Keller who passed away May 8, 1995. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Donald August of Canton; and a grandson, Matthew Harhager and his wife, Jamie of Canton; a sister and three brothers also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Deborah L. Quillen officiating. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Barberton, OH. Calling hours at the funeral home on Thursday evening 7-9 p.m. The Order of the Eastern Star will hold services Thursday at 6:45 p.m.

Phyllis A. Black
Phyllis A. Black, age 89, of North Canton, passed away at home Monday, May 27, 2002. Phyllis was born in Canton to the late Guy and Catherine (O'Malley) Carnes; and was a former employee of the M. O'Neil Company. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Dolly Cade and Jane King; and one brother, Erwin Bud Carnes. Survivors include sister, Bernice Carnes of N. Canton; brother, Thomas Carnes of Louisville; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Joan Black of Canton; daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Joe Esmont of N. Canton; also surviving are six grandchildren and their spouses, Christine Kieffer of Canton, Jeff and Beth Esmont of Frederick, MD., Erin and bill Rabinowitz of Columbus, OH., Mike Jr., Corey Lynn and Andy Black, all of Canton; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 30th., from 3-6 p.m. at the Reed Funeral Home followed immediately by the funeral service at 6 p.m. officiated by Dr. Chet Harris.

Reynold J. Nyland
Reynold James Nyland, age 74, of Bedford, TX, formerly of Barslope, PA, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at his home. Mr. Nyland had retired after 35 years with the Ford Motor Co. in Canton. Among survivors are his wife, Delores Stiffler Nyland and son, Roy, both of Texas. Friends will be received at the Bence-Mihalcik Funeral Home in Indiana on Thursday, May 30, from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., the time of funeral services. Interment will be made in Oakland Cemetery in Indiana.

Robert A. Hoffman
Robert A. Hoffman, age 88, of Canton, died Sunday, May 26, 2002 in Aultman Hopsital. Retired from Hiney Printing Co. in 1984 after 24 years of service and was a member of Star Lodge #187 F AM, and Cuyahoga Falls Elks BPOE #1923. Survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Danny Fisher of Silver City, NM and Carolyn and Gregg Thompson of Ossining, NY; sons and daughters, Robert A. and Helen Hoffman, II of Chino Valley, AZ, and Richard L. and Sandra Hoffman of North Canton; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife, Helen Kathleen. There will be no funeral services. Friends may call at the Karlo-Feucht Funeral Home, 5000 Everhard Rd. Thomas J. Walsh, Jr.
Thomas J. Walsh, Jr., age 77, of Sandyville, OH, devoted husband, and loving father, grandfather and great-granddaughter, died suddenly Monday morning. Born in Canton, he had lived in N. Canton before moving to Sandyville in 1996. Tom was a 1942 graduate of St. John's High School and had attended Kent State University. During World War II he served with the Army in the European Theatre, the Battle of the Bulge and the Liberation of Germany. He retired in 1986 from Ashland Oil Co. after 35 years of service. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, and had been the Rector of the Canton Cursillo #15, and the Rector of Emmanuel Emmaus #3. Survived by his wife, Marjorie L. (Scott) Walsh; two daughters and a son-in-law, Cindy and Greg Drew of Wooster, OH, and Chris Walsh of Canton; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Tom Walsh III of Canton, Greg and Denise Walsh of Sandyvile, and Jim and Patrice Walsh of Canton; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Fran Walsh of Canton; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Schultz and her husband, Charles of N. Canton, and Rae Lynn Toolan of Canton; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Thomas J. Sr. and Helen (Flagg); a sister-in-law, Kathy Delaney; and a niece and two nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in the St. John's Catholic Church with Fr. Ronald Klingler as celebrant. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday (Tonight) from 5-8 p.m. at the Lamiell Funeral Home. Twila Ruth Witte
Twila Ruth (Schweikert) Witte, 83, died May 28, 2002. Born Nov. 7, 1918, to James S. and Emma Margaret (Sherer) Ake in East Canton, OH, she was a graduate of East Canton High School in 1936, and Timken Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She was a member of Mercy Hospital Honor Society and Timken Mercy Hospital Alumni. Mrs. Witte worked as a second shift charge nurse after graduation and later was Dr. M.L. Greenberger's office assistant. She was an industrial nurse at Goodyear until 1945, and in 1971 returned to Goodyear Aerospace, retiring in 1982. Mrs. Witte was a member of Woodruff Grove United Methodist Church. She loved to fish and garden and was proud to be a nurse. Mrs. Witte was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Schweikert in 1972. She is survived by husband, Paul A. Witte of Wolcottville, IN; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Ann and Russ Kullmann of St. Petersburg, FL; daughter, Dora Jean Boyd of Akron; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Roger Nicholas of Akron; grandchildren, Todd Miller, Jennifer Martin, Kindra Boyd; great-granddaughter, Jadzia Martin; stepchildren, Darla Samra, Larry and Nedra Witte, Jean and Stephen Parnin; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with Rev. Richard Frederick officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday, 11 a.m. until service time. William K. Conner
William K. Conner, age 79, of Louisville, died Monday, May 27, 2002, in Aultman Hospital following an extended illness. He was born April 30, 1923, in Noble County to Irvel and Ethel (Cooker) Conner. He retired as a truck driver from Selinsky Trucking Co., then worked for Sunshine Nursery, was a US Army Veteran of World War II, earning three bronze stars in the European theater, member of Christ United Methodist Church in Louisville, and was a former member of the Airstream Club and White Clouds. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bernadine (Fogle) Conner whom he married March 16, 1946; a daughter, Myra Keck of Columbus; two sisters, Lena Conner of Cambridge, Helen Johnson of Caldwell; two grandchildren, Brian Keck of South Carolina, Brenda Keck of Fairfield; three great-grandchildren, Justin Keck of South Carolina, Eric and Ryan Ross of Fairfield; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a brother, Dick Conner. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Louisville with Dr. Edward C. Beck officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the funeral home. Those unable to attend may register at www.legacy.com

William V. King
William V. King, 81, of Malvern, died Monday, May 27, 2002, in Alliance Community Hospital following a long illness. Born in Wilkinsburg, PA, October 11, 1920, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mary (Carter) King. He was a retired maintenance clerk for the Ford Motor Company and a member of the Valley Post #375 of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Jean (Pettit) King whom he married July 14, 1939; son, James Arthur King of Shelter Cove, CA; daughters, Susan Kay King of Minerva, Rebecca Ann Foit of Durham, NC, and Elizabeth Jean Sullivan of Minerva; sister, Dorothy Holder; and brother, Jay King, both of Canton; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, in Liberty Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Heart Center, the Philomatheon Society or the Salvation Army.
