Helen I. Kyne
Died: Saturday, June 28, 2003
Age: 79

1924-2003 Helen I. Kyne, 79, Spring Valley, passed away Saturday afternoon, June 28, 2003, at Hospice of Dayton.

She was born May 27, 1924, in Xenia, the daughter of George and Mary Barlow Bottorff. She retired from S.B. Craig & Co.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and Jerry Bowen, Spring Valley; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph L. and Judy Kyne, Spring Valley, and Patrick G. Kyne, Bellbrook; seven grandchildren and spouses, Bradley and Crystal Kyne, Tracey and Ron Brooks, Tod and Laure Bowen, Chad and Cristy Bowen, Patricia Nelms, Ashley Kyne and Justin Kyne; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Roberts, Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Neil "Tom" Bottorff, Xenia; and a longtime friend, Herman Weidner, Spring Valley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Kyne, May 4, 1987; two children; and two brothers, George Bottorff and F.E. "Peanut" Bottorff.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. July 2 at the Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery, with the Rev. Ben Lyttle officiating.

Contributions may be made to the Spring Valley Senior Center, 1498 Spring Valley-Paintersville Rd., Spring Valley, Oh. 45370.

Lt. Col. Roy M. Clayton III
Died: Thursday, June 26, 2003
Age: 43

USAF Lt. Col. Roy Mackenzie Clayton III (Ret.), 43, born in Elkins Park, PA, and residing in Beavercreek, OH, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Lt. Col. Clayton grew up in Dresher, PA, and graduated from Upper Dublin High School in 1977 as a member of the National Honor Society. He was active in gymnastics and played soccer for school and club leagues.

Congressman Lawrence Coughlin appointed him to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. He played varsity soccer and graduated with honors in 1981.

He received an MBA in 1984 from the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson AF Base in Dayton, OH.

While in the Air Force, Lt. Col. Clayton served at: Hanscom AF Base in Bedford, MA, Wright-Patterson AF Base in Dayton, OH, the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he served as the women’s soccer coach, and at Air Force Headquarters, the Pentagon. Lt. Col. Clayton worked as a Cost Analyst for the Bomber Road Map Project, maintaining aircraft for the future.

He served on the boards of various congressmen to determine USAF Academy appointments. He retired from the Air Force on July 31, 2001.

After retirement, he was employed by MCR Federated, a division of AT&T in Dayton, OH, where he worked on the F-16 Modification Project.

Throughout his life, Lt. Col. Clayton was an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed indoor and outdoor soccer, running, cycling, softball, and volleyball. He participated in the Boston Marathon, Race for the Cure, and other events.

He was an active band parent and coached his children’s sports teams.

Lt. Col. Clayton was the loving husband of 17 years to Belinda Clayton (nee Raiford), of Beavercreek, OH. He was the devoted father of four children: Heather, 16, Daniel, 14, Sara, 13, and Colin, 10, all of Beavercreek, OH.

He is also survived by his parents, Roy M. Jr. and Elizabeth (nee Blizzard) Clayton, of Dresher, PA; six sisters, Judith (Jeff) Ehring, of Highlands Ranch, CO, Bonnie (David) Kertland, of Harrisburg, PA, Jill (Steve) Adams, of Warminster, PA, Melissa (Matt) Budz, of Gaithersburg, MD, Jeanne (Andy) Shepherd, of Willow Grove, PA, Abigail Clayton, of Dresher, PA; and one brother, Thomas (Jenn) Clayton, of Huntington Valley, PA; his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Raiford, of AL; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

Family and friends are invited to Lt. Col. Clayton’s Funeral Mass Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. from St. Alphonsus Church, 33 Conwell Drive, Maple Glen, PA. A Military interment will follow at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Horsham, PA.

Gordon R. Smith
Died: Thursday, June 26, 2003
Age: 77

Gordon R. Smith, age 77, of Fairborn, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2003, at WPAFB Medical Center. He was born December 18, 1925, the son of William and Hester (McKee) Smith in Cordia, Kentucky. He served in the Navy one-and-a-half years from 1944 to 1946, and he worked at General Motors for 30 years and retired in 1979. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Katie M. (Owens) Smith; two daughters, Carla Y. Dunn and Karen L. Smith, both of Dayton, a son, Charles K. Smith of Fairborn; two sisters, Georgia Ramsey and Elsie Vassey, both of Fairborn; a grandson, Sean M. Dunn of Dayton; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Olly Shearer, Virginia Barnett and Virgie Grigsby; and four brothers, Alfred Smith, Hagan Smith, Cordis Smith and Prescott Smith.

Friends may call at the Burcham Funeral Home, 119 E. Main St., Fairborn, Oh., 878-0711, from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, where funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at 11 a.m.

Burial will be at Byron Cemetery.

Julia E. Markel
Died: Thursday, June 26, 2003
Age: 77

Julia E. Market, 77, of Cedarville, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 26, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center. She was born January 16, 1926, in Fairborn, Ohio, the daughter of Fred and Opal (Dunnier) Hammel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe H. Markel Sr. in 1986; an infant daughter, Lillian; sisters Pauline, Lula, Vonnie, Alberta and Marcell; and brother Ralph.

Mrs. Market is survived by her children, Roscoe (Polly) Market Jr. of Xenia, Alberta Ellis of Cedarville and Fred Market of Urbana; sisters, Carol (Ralph) Klontz of Columbus and Miriam (Richard) Hodson of Wilmington; brothers Roland (Geneva) Hammel of Dayton, Robert (Lydia) Hammel of Jamestown and Paul Hammell of Cedarville; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friend, Rhonda Markel.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ, 36 N. Main St., Cedarville, Ohio, with Brother Frum officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at McColaugh Funeral Home, 826 N. Detroit St., Xenia, Ohio 45385. Burial will be in Enon Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family care of McColaugh Funeral Home.

William Conley Meade
Died: Thursday, June 26, 2003
Age: 73

William Conley Meade, 73, of Fairborn passed away Thursday June 26, 2003 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center. He was born Jan. 24, 1930 in Neon, Kentucky the son of William and Laura (Yontz) Meade.

He served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a retired Civil Service Worker at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He was Kentucky Colonel.

He was a member of the Fairborn P.A.C.T., Central Avenue Church of Christ, Dignam Whitmore American Legion Post 526. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his loving wife, Edith Meade; a daughter, Laura Meade of Medway, Ohio; two sisters, Georgia Phillips of Neon, Kentucky and Imogene Saylor of Georgia; nine grandchildren, Amanda Jenkins, Lacey Meade and Shana Meade, Eric Boocher, Ross Copley, Dustin and Jeremy Crowley, Alan Howard and Nicole Howard; four great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, Kevin Crowley, Ellen Crowley and Robin Howard; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Conley W. “Chuck” Meade and Bobby Meade; a sister, Veiney Bentley; and four brothers, Lonnie, Warren, Linville and Palmer Meade.

Friends may call in the Burcham Funeral Home, 119 E. Main Street, Fairborn, Ohio (878-0711) Monday June 30, 2003 from 10 a.m. until time of services at noon. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery.

Ruby Kathryn (Johnson) Belt
Died: Thursday, June 26, 2003
Age: 83

Ruby Kathryn (Johnson) Belt at age 83, she winged her way to heaven. She was born Jan. 30, 1920.

She was ill for some time. Born in Hanging Rock, Ohio. One of 10 children born to Milford and Hazel (Klaiber) Johnson.

Her parents, three brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. Also her husband Francis C. Belt.

She is survived by six children; one brother and one sister. Norma and Chuck Hogan of Dayton, Carroll (Ike) and Pat Belt of Chandler, Arizona, Janet Lang of Dayton, Trisha and George Wiget of Wilmington, Ohio, Brenda and George Henry of Xenia, Pamela and Bill Woodson of Xenia. Sister Pearl Mohr of Marion, Ohio, and brother Milford Johnson of Dayton, Ohio. Ruby was blessed with 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was a super mom, grandmother, friend and was loved by all.

She retired from Dayton State Hospital after 25 years.

She loved dancing and was an avid euchre player. She donated her body

to Wright State Anatomical Department.

Donations may be given to Wright State Anatomical Department or the Alzheimer Foundation.

Memorial services will be held at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia, Ohio, July 10, 2003. Friends may call from 4 p.m.-5 p.m. for visitation with services following. Pastor Terry Hall will officiate.
