Opal Fern Knox Pinson
Died: Sunday, July 27, 2003
Age: 83

Opal Fern Knox Pinson, 83, passed away Sunday July 27, 2003 at 8:45 p.m. at Liberty Nursing Center in Jamestown. She had been a resident there for three years.

She was born Feb. 27, 1920 to Everett and Linda Knox in Waterloo, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Pinson on March 20, 1987; three brothers, Emory Knox, Chester Knox, and Owen Knox; two sisters, Naomi Wiseman and Marie Greeno; and one grandson, Michael Pinson.

She is survived by two children, Mrs. Richard (Lavina) Hughes of Jamestown, Ohio and Mr. Keith Michael (Mickey) and wife, Sarah Pinson of Atwater, California; four grandchildren, Mrs. Chris (Connie) Jeffries of Washington Court House, Ohio, Mrs. Patrick (Sandra) Hurley of Wadsworth, Ohio, Jeffrey and Candy Hughes of Sabina, Ohio, and Paul and Hiromi Pinson of Japan; nine great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Erin and Jenna Spears, Amber, Chelsey and Chrystal Hurley and Tucker, Kylie Jo and Laykin Hughes. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Chester (Dorothy) Knox and extended family grandson, Randy Bilbeisi of Colorado.

Services will be held at the Powers Funeral Home in Jamestown Thursday July 31, 2003 at 11 a.m. where friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. Burial will be in Silvercreek Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasantview Church of Christ, 6906 Upper Jamestown Rd., Jeffersonville, Ohio 43128.

Charles Emerson Barnard
Died: Saturday, July 26, 2003

Charles Emerson Barnard died July 26, 2003 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was born in Liberty, Indiana on January 6, 1918, the son of Cecil and Helen Boulton Barnard. By age three, his family moved to Spring Valley, Ohio. He graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1935.

Charles served six years in the US Army in WWII, in the Pacific Theater in the Philippine Islands and New Guinea in the field artillery. He was awarded the Bronze Star and other citations for meritorious service.

He resumed his job at National Cash Register Company in Dayton upon his discharge from the Army, and in January 1947 he married Jane Collins, also from Spring Valley. They had one daughter, Susan.

Charles and Jane lived all around the Dayton area. They moved to Enon in 1956 and to Beavercreek in 1960 where their daughter Susan graduated from high school in 1967. He played on the softball team for the traffic department at NCR’s Old River Park for many years. He was a member of the Spring Valley United Methodist Church.

In 1982 he retired from NCR Corp. and resided in Kettering until 2001 when he moved to Rising Sun, Indiana with his daughter.

Charles is survived by his daughter Susan and son-in-law Lloyd Brown of Rising Sun, Indiana; a granddaughter, Angela Wing of Astoria, Oregon; three great-grandchildren, Sheila, Angie, Kara; a cousin, Grace Evelyn Maeder of Spring Valley, plus other relatives in the Dayton area.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Smith, his father Cecil Barnard, step-father Max Barnard, sister Connie Compton and sister Emily Dement, all of Dayton.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, August 1, with burial in David’s Cemetery, Kettering, under the direction of the Humphrey-Taylor-Detmer Funeral Home, Rising Sun, Indiana.

Marsha J. Hieber
Died: Saturday, July 26, 2003
Age: 66

Marsha J. Hieber, 66, of Kettering, formerly of Bellbrook, passed away suddenly Saturday, July 26, 2003, at her home.

She was a 1955 graduate of Central High School, Xenia.

Marsha attended Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati.

She earned her undergraduate degree from Wright State University and graduated from Ohio State University in 1987, where she earned her Masters Degree in Social Work.

Marsha was a licensed social worker at Miami Valley Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital.

She retired in October 2002 from Miami Valley Hospital.

Preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Hilma Strome, her first husband, Owen J. "Jerry" McPherson.

Marsha is survived by her beloved son, Mark A. McPherson of Daytona Beach, FL; beloved daughter, Beth Anne Owens; and special friend, Thomas A. Misenko of Bellbrook; former husband, Raymond Hieber of Bellbrook; stepson, Officer Jeffrey C. Hieber of Dayton; two stepdaughters, Karen A. Rase and her husband, Jeffrey of Dayton, Pia L. Hieber-Hall and her husband, Dave of North Carolina; nine special and beloved grandchildren, Rachel, Matt, Connor, Katie, Joey, Abby, Aiden, Kelly, and Kristopher; sister, Dolores Strous and her husband, Richard of Xenia; special niece, Nancy Wellman; nephews, Rick Strous and Tom and Angela Strous and their families; beloved cousins, Joe and Bonnita Cibere of Thousand Oaks, CA and John Cibere of Seattle, WA; long-time friend, Marcia Grace of Cincinnati; and many other close and special friends.

The family will receive friends from 5-6 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Tobias-Conner & Koch Funeral Home, 92 W. Franklin St. (S.R. 725), Bellbrook.

Memorial services will follow at 6 p.m.

Interment in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton.

In lieu of flowers, Marsha had asked that those who would wish, to plant a tree in her memory, or contribute to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help a child have a memorable special event.

Marsha was a very special person and will be sorely missed by her beloved family and many friends.

Loretta Faye Funk Abell
Died: Saturday, July 26, 2003
Age: 53

Loretta Faye Funk Abell, 53, of Xenia, passed away Saturday morning at Kettering Medical Center. She was born in Fort Gay, West Va. the daughter of Bill and Opal Marie (Lyons) Stevens.

She is survived by her father, Bill; and step-mother, Deloris Stevens of Miamisburg; husband, Donny Abell; daughter, Tammy (Chet) Lemaster; and son, Billy Ballard and fiancee, Carla Parson, all of Xenia; son, Claude M. Funk and fiancee, Jenny Nickelson of Blue Ash; three grandchildren, Dustin and Brett Shull and Zachary Darner; sisters, Barbara Kolb of Kettering, Bonnie Halsted of London, Brenda Wallace of Xenia, Teresa (Joe) Forinash of Xenia, Betty (Stanley) Bowen of Inez, Ky.; mother-in-law, Margaret Abell of Xenia; sister-in-law, Charlotte Stevens of Kettering; brother-in-law, James (Tina) Abell of Xenia; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Opal Lyons Stevens and a brother, William Stevens.

Services will be held Wednesday 1:30 p.m. at the Powers Funeral Home in Jamestown where friends may call Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bowersville.

Rachel C. Wiechers
Died: Monday, June 16, 2003
Age: 90

Rachel C. Wiechers, 90, Xenia, passed away Monday morning, June 16, 2003, at Trinity Community of Beavercreek. She was born July 20, 1912, in Montgomery County, the daughter of Frank and Bessie Elliott Woods.

She was a member of the Union United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Marjorie A. Wiechers, Dayton; two grandchildren and spouses, Donna and Michael Fraser and David and Kim Wiechers; and three great-grandchildren, Amanda Wiechers, Daniel Wiechers, and Kristin Wiechers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore

G. Wiechers, Nov. 19, 1984;

a son, Donald Wiechers;

a granddaughter, Marilyn Robinson; and a brother, Roy Woods.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at the Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. Thursday, until service time.

Burial will be in Bellbrook Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to the American Heart Fund.

Matthew Scott McCurdy
Died: Sunday, June 15, 2003
Age: 22

Matthew Scott "Matt" McCurdy, 22, of Bellbrook, died suddenly Sunday, June 15, 2003, in Wyoming, as a result of an automobile accident. Matt was born April 2, 1981, in Flint, Michigan, to Mike and Jeanne McCurdy.

He was a 1999 graduate of Bellbrook High School, where he played the drums in the Bellbrook Marching Band. Matt had attended the University of Toledo before going to Wyoming Technical Institute, where he studied Automotive Performance Technology.

He enjoyed building and working on performance vehicles, snow skiing, and water sports such as water skiing, fishing, and boating.

He is survived by his parents, F.M. "Mike" and Jeanne McCurdy of Bellbrook; sister Sheryl Lynn Fuester and her son Alex Michael Eastman of Grand Blanc, Michigan; brother Michael Curtis McCurdy of Bellbrook; paternal grandparents Floyd "Mac" and Kathleen McCurdy of Danville, Illinois; and many beloved relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Tobias-Conner & Koch Funeral Home, 92 W. Franklin St. (S.R. 725), Bellbrook. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Matt to B.S.E.F. (Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Education Foundation), P.O. Box 5, Bellbrook, Ohio 45305.
