Virginia L. (Larason) Elliott

July 17, 1915-Jan. 2, 2004

A funeral service for Virginia L. (Larason) Elliott, 88, of Heath, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Christian Endeavor United Methodist Church, with the Pastor Richard L. Smyers officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Elliott, a homemaker, passed away Jan. 2, 2004, at the Licking Memorial Hospital. She was born July 17, 1915, in Newark, to the late Edwin M. and Bertha F. (Harter) Larason.

Mrs. Elliott was a member of the Christian Endeavor United Methodist Church where she taught fifth grade Sunday School for 25 years; she also belonged to the Heath Sr. Citizens, Owens Corning Retirees, and to the See More Travel Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Larry) Blackburn of Newark; one brother, Donald Larason of Newark; three grandchildren, Rodney (Emily) Blackburn of Hopkins, S.C., Jennifer Blackburn of Newark, and Bethany (Darby Blackstone) Blackburn of Newark; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Rebecca Blackburn both of Hopkins, S.C.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Richard Elliott, whom she was married to for 56 years, preceded her in death. Mr. Elliott passed away on Dec. 24th, 1993. Five brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark, and Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Gladys P. Logan

July 19, 1910-Dec. 29, 2003

A funeral service for Gladys P. Logan, 93, of East Church Street, Lexington, was held on Jan. 2 at the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, with the Rev. Don Smith officiating. Burial followed in Lexington Cemetery.

Mrs. Logan died Monday evening, Dec. 29, 2003, in Lexington Court Care Center following a long illness.

Now at home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, she was born July 19, 1910, in Lexington, to John F. and Lottie V. (Sheckler) Logan, was graduated from Lexington High School with the class of 1928 and had been a lifelong area resident.

She had worked as a secretary for Lexington Schools, retiring in 1975. She and her mother Lottie owned and operated Logan's Restaurant in Lexington, specializing in home cooked food and pies.

Gladys was a member of Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church.

A devoutly religious woman, and true crusader for the Lord, Gladys would use any opportunity to witness about the Lord.

She is survived by two nieces, Maxine Binckley and Norma and her husband Joe Williams; a great-nephew and his wife, Tim and Debbie Binckley; and a great-niece, Lori Fackler, all of Newark.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Whitis; and two brothers, Carson Logan, killed in World War II, and David Logan.

Memorial contributions to Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church, 1905 North Lexington-Springmill Road, Mansfield, Ohio 44906, may be made at the funeral home.

Ruth A. Myer

Sept. 25, 1918-Jan. 4, 2004

A funeral service for Ruth A. Myer, 85, of Newark, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Chapel, with Pastor James Addy officiating. Interment will follow at Wilson Cemetery.

Mrs. Myer died on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at her daughter's residence in Newark. She was born in Newark, on Sept. 25, 1918, to the late George and Forest Rose (Crouse) Belt.

She retired from the Newark Air Force Base and was also a homemaker, as well as a loving mother and grandmother. She was a member of Calvary Christian Union Church in Thornville.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Don Rashley of Angola, Ind., Patty and Bill Syndram of Newark, and Dale and Craig Worstall of Chandlersville; eight grandchildren, Scott, Laura, Sherry, Willy, Charlotte, Bradley, Ryan and Joshua; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Rose Coen of Nashport; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Myer is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank P. Myer, whom she married on Nov. 7, 1942; and two sisters, Esther West and Edith Belt.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 179 Granville St., Newark.

Ruth L. Bland

July 6, 1919-Jan. 3, 2004

A funeral service for Ruth L. Bland, 84, of Pataskala, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Pataskala United Methodist Church, with the Rev. G. F. Peters officiating. Private graveside services will be held.

Mr. Bland passed away at her residence on Jan. 3, 2004. She was born to the late Arthur and Maude Davis Anderson on July 6, 1919, in Columbus.

Mrs. Bland was a member of the Pataskala United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, and volunteer at the Pataskala Oaks Nursing Home.

She is survived by three children, Marcia (Gary) Rinehart Williams, John (Sharon) Bland, and Kathy (Earl) Bland Cruikshank; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Howard Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Bland; and two sisters, Alice Hoffman and Jane Anderson.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Kauber-Miller Funeral Home in Pataskala.

Gene 'Geno' Jurczak

Jan. 7, 1956-Jan. 4, 2004

A funeral service for Gene "Geno" Jurczak, 47, of Newark, will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Newark Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service.

Mr. Jurczak, who had been employed by Earhart Petroleum, Inc. in Reynoldsburg, died Jan. 4, 2004, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center of Hospice of Central Ohio. He was born Jan. 7, 1956, in New York, N.Y., to Theodar Jurczak of Naples, Fla., and the late Elly (Schultz) Jurczak.

Mr. Jurczak was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Moose Lodge.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife and best friend, Jamie M. Robinson-Jurczak; son, Erik Jurczak of Newark; daughters, Nora and Sara Jurczak of New Concord; stepsons, Michael Mason of Granville, and Christopher McLean of Glenford; grandchildren, Haley and Trevor; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hans and Patty Jurczak of Kentucky, and Theodar Jr. and Lori Jurczak from Pennsylvania; uncle, Walter Jurczak of Pennsylvania; several nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Ann Robinson of Wheeling, W.Va.; sisters-in-law, Terrie (Ron) Miller of Thornville, and Sherry (Dan) Butler of Glenford; and brother-in-law, James David (Deena) Robinson of Newark.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 59 N. Fifth St.

Donald Stuart Peters

Dec. 20, 1941-Jan. 5, 2004

A funeral service for Donald Stuart Peters, 62, of Mansfield, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home in Newark. Interment will take place at the Welsh Hills Cemetery in Granville Township.

Mr. Peters died Jan. 5, 2004, at the Med Central Hospital in Mansfield. He was born on Dec. 20, 1941, in East Cleveland, to Thurston and Wilma (Tissue) Peters.

Mr. Peters was a graduate of Kansas State University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1965. He was formerly employed as a social worker at the Ohio State Reformatory.

He is survived by his wife, Sunda Peters of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Kevin Connair of Columbus; a son, Brett Peters of Whitehall; mother, Wilma Peters of Moreland Hills; and grandson, Matthew David Connair of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, David Peters.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Don H. Fogle

May 4, 1946-Jan. 5, 2004

A funeral service for Don H. Fogle, 57, of Warsaw, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Perry Chapel Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Fogle passed away Jan. 5, 2004, at his residence. He was born May 4, 1946, in Mount Vernon, to the late Roy and Irene (Wood) Fogle.

Mr. Fogle worked as an electrician and was also a member of the I.B.E.W. He was a member of the Newark American Legion, and he faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Don is survived by his son, Chad (Tracy) Fogle of Warsaw; daughter, Tammy Ramsey of Heath; five grandchildren, Dalton and Bodhi Ramsey, Jesse, Caleb and Hannah Fogle; brothers, David Fogle of Warsaw, and Loran (Carol) Fogle of St. Louisville; sister, Betty (Bobb) Babb of Newark; along with several nieces and nephews.

Don is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Roy, Tom and Emerald; and two sisters, Juanita and Shirley.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark.

Esther Retherford

May 19, 1916-Jan. 5, 2004

A funeral service for Esther Retherford, 87, of Newark, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Newark Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service, with the Rev. Miriam Schreck and the Rev. Richard Burgie officiating. A graveside interment service will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Norwich Cemetery, Norwich, Ohio.

Mrs. Retherford, a homemaker, died Jan. 5, 2004, at the Heritage Unit at Newark Healthcare Centre. She was born May 19, 1916, in Muskingum County, to the late Herbert and Nora (Mock) Bebout.

Mrs. Retherford was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, the Newark Grange 1004 and the Rebecca Lodge. She was active in Girl Scouts and had been a leader for 18 years. She had trained other Girl Scout leaders and was Day Camp director.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Michael Barclay of Newark; four grandchildren, Robert (Karen) Barclay of Heath, Jeff (Tricia) Barclay of Newark, David Hummel of Florida, and James Hummel of Newark; and six great-grandchildren, Dustin, Kendall, Sharree and Kara Barclay, Branden and Mandy Hummel.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Retherford, in October of 1990; by a daughter, Geraldine Hummel; and two brothers.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 59 N. Fifth St.

James C. Wallace

July 15, 1938-Jan. 2, 2004

A funeral service for James C. Wallace, 65, of Alexandria, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Crouse-Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home, 225 N. Main St., Johnstown, with Pastor Trudy Sebastian officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan.

Mr. Wallace died Jan. 2, 2004, at Licking Memorial Hospital. He was born July 15, 1938, in Somerset, Ky., to the late Artha and Myrtle Van Hook Wallace.

He was member of Emmanuel Praise Church, Alexandria.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Wallace; and stepfather, Hershel Music of Carey.

He was preceded in death by one sister; and one half-brother.

Betty Duncan Powell

May 25, 1922-Dec. 27, 2003

A memorial service for Betty Duncan Powell, 81, of Newark, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Second Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Mitch Van Metre officiating.

Mrs. Powell, a 62 year member of Second Presbyterian Church, died Saturday evening, Dec. 27, 2003, at home with her family at her side. She was born May 25, 1922, in Newark, she was a daughter of the late Carl W. and Catherine (Baumgarten) Duncan.

She was the valedictorian of the 1940 class of Newark High School and was the recipient of scholarships from both Denison and Capital Universities.

She worked for many years at Powell Electric as the treasurer and a member of the board of directors.

She was the past president of the 20th Century Club, the Camp O'Bannon Board of Directors, the Mental Health Association, Monday Talks and the Licking County Foundation. She also served her community through her involvement with the OSU Newark Citizens Council and Twig 8. She was a member of the Review Club and, in 1992, she received the "Women of Achievement" award from the YWCA for her community work. Also in 1992, she received the "4-Way Test" award from the Newark Rotary Club.

She is survived by her husband, Tom A. Powell; daughters and son-in-law, Kathy and David Miller of Newark, and Karen Powell of New York, N.Y.; grandchildren, Marcy Miller of Fairfax, Va., and Thomas D. Miller of Newark; brother, Carl "Dunk" and Phyllis Duncan Jr. of Green Mountain, Colo.; and nieces and nephews, Chriss, Cindy, Scott, Brian, Karey and Kim.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Carol Jean Clay; and a nephew, Kipling Duncan.

The family will receive friends in the dining room at the church following the memorial service on Saturday.

The family requests contributions to the Second Presbyterian Church, 42 E. Church St., Newark, Hospice of Central Ohio, 1984 A Coffman Road, Newark, Ohio 43055, or the charity of one's choice.
