David G. Black
Oct. 3, 1915-June 21, 2002

A memorial service for David G. Black, 86, of Pataskala, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pataskala United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ruben Cabanillas and the Rev. Gervaise Peters officiating.

Mr. Black, who retired from Rockwell International of Columbus, died June 21, 2002, at home. He was born Oct. 3, 1915, in Youngstown, Ohio, to the late David and Mae (Morris) Black.

Mr. Black was a member of the Pataskala United Methodist Church, the VFW, having served as captain in the field artillery in Iceland and Europe during World War II, Wahneta Chapter 235 OES, F&AM 404, Summit Seniors, and a former member of the Pataskala Lions Club. He was active in local government, serving on various commissions, village council, and mayor. He enjoyed camping, fishing, bridge and traveling, both domestic and foreign.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Osborn; four children, Mary Ann (David) Spahr of Xenia, Ohio, Carol Jeanne (Craig) Nasoff of Rockville, Md., David G. (SonWon) Black III of Sterling, Va. and South Korea, and Richard (Alice) Black of Reynoldsburg; six grandchildren, Alan Spahr of Carol Stream, Ill., Philip Spahr of Jamestown, N.C., Kevin Nasoff (Lisa) of Gaithersburg, Md., Melanie (Thomas) Doolittle of Damascus, Md., Jason and Andrew Black of Reynoldsburg; two great grandchildren, Karly Rosencrans and Daniel Nasoff both of Gaithersburg, Md.; a sister, Ruth (Ernest) Gorgei of Youngstown, Ohio; sister-in-law, Lerlene Black of McKinney, Texas; brother-in-law, Joseph Osborn of Pataskala; and many nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leslie and Richard Black.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pataskala United Methodist Church, PO Box 777, Pataskala, Ohio 43062.

Robert H. "Whitey" Heckmann
May 29, 1916-June 22, 2002

A Mass of Christian burial for Robert H. "Whitey" Heckmann, 86, of Heath, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Leonard Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Reis officiating. Inurnment will take place in Newark Memorial Gardens at a later date.

Mr. Heckmann died June 22, 2002, at Licking Memorial Hospital. He was born May 29, 1916, in Newark, to the late Henry J. and Claire May (Spickler) Heckmann.

Mr. Heckmann, a United States Army World War II veteran, worked as a machinist for Owens Corning for 41 years. He was a member of the Owens Retirees, Owens 25 Year Club, American Legion Post 85, and a life member and trustee of the Newark Maennerchor.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Louanna (Woolfe) Heckmann; sons and daughters-in-law, Henry J. and Joyce Heckmann of Newark, and William A. and Tina Heckmann of Goosecreek, S.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda A. and Charles Oliver of Newark, Mary L. Gilbert of Five Point, Ala., Sue E. Overbey of Newark, and Patricia A. and Richard Smith of Green Well Springs, La.; daughter-in-law, Suzy Heckmann of Newark; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph R and Thomas E. Heckmann; and two sisters, Susie Schilling and Gerry Jury.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Reed-Egan Funeral Home, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where a Rosary service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

Memorial can be made to the St. Leonard Catholic Church.

Robert L. Mathias
Sept. 20, 1923-June 23, 2002

A graveside service for Robert L. Mathias, 78, of Granville, will be held at a later date.

Mr. Mathias, a retired operator for the Kroger Co. at the Tamarack Dairy in Newark, died June 23, 2002, at the Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Mich.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the McPeek Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Raccoon Valley Conservation Club, P.O. Box 224, Granville, Ohio 43023; American Legion Post 398, P.O. Box 2, Granville, Ohio 43023; or Zerger Hall Senior Center, 745 E. Main St., Newark, Ohio 43055.

Jean R. Biggs
May 29, 1923-June 23, 2002

A funeral service for Jean R. Biggs, 79, of Croton, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Croton United Methodist Church, 75 N. High St., Croton, with the Rev. Brian Dunham officiating. Burial will follow in Hartford Cemetery, Croton.

Mr. Biggs, who retired from Northway Cab Co., Columbus, in died June 23, 2002. He was born May 29, 1923, in Middleport, Ohio, to the late Alva and Bessie (Tharp) Biggs.

Mr. Biggs was a member of the Croton United Methodist Church and the Hartford and Pomona Grange.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Louise Biggs; one daughter, Mary (Roy) McKinely of Croton; two sons, Richard (Marilyn) Biggs of Columbus, and Ralph Biggs of Croton; five grandchildren, Dale (Angela) Poe, Bryan (Theresa) Poe, Jodi Baker, Michelle Collier, and Melissa Collier; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Crouse-Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home, 225 N. Main St., Johnstown.

John Wesley Kasser Sr.
Jan. 26, 1908-June 21, 2002

A funeral service for John Wesley Kasser, 94, of Pataskala, will be held at 8 p.m. today at Kauber-Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Dave and Rev. Jane Fulks officiating.

Mr. Kasser, who retired from Timkens Roller Bearing, Columbus, died June 21, 2002, at his residence. He was born Jan. 26, 1908, in Stratford, Ohio.

He is survived by his children, John W. Kasser Jr., Charles E. (Sue) Kasser, Ted L. (Edna) Kasser, Donald E. (Carol) Kasser, Rita A. (David) Nash and Jo Ann M. (John) Oyer; 16 grandchildren; and 27 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 289 S. Main St., Pataskala.

Robert L. Mathias
Sept. 20, 1923-June 23, 2002

A graveside service for Robert L. Mathias, 78, of Granville, will be held at 11 a.m. July 27 in Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville with the Rev. Karen J. Chakoian officiating and the Licking County Veterans Alliance presenting military honors.

Mr. Mathias, a retired operator for the Kroger Co. at the Tamarack Dairy in Newark, died June 23, 2002, at the Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Mich. He was born Sept. 20, 1923, in Columbus, to the late J.F. and Faye (Perry) Mathias.

Mr. Mathias was a 1941 graduate of Reynoldsburg High School. He served during World War II with the U.S. Army in the 61st Chemical Depot Company.

Mr. Mathias was a member of the Central Christian Church in Newark, the Raccoon Valley Conservation Club, the Land of Legend Fly Fishers, 40+8 and the Loyal Order of Moose in Riverview, Fla. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 398 in Granville and a charter member of the Am-Vets. He was a family man, an avid outdoorsman, repairman and storyteller. As a veteran, he served his country with quiet dignity.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Don (Butch) Curtis of Granville, Marlene and Richard Butler of Newark, and Barbara and Don (Gunthor) Hunter of Granville; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Melissa Mathias of Newark; grandchildren, Chris Curtis and his wife, Barcy, Casey Curtis and his wife, Erin, Cameron Curtis, Shaun Hutchinson, Hailee and Hannah Mathias, and Dustin Butler; great-grandsons, Chase and Alex Curtis; brother and sister-in-law, John and Ethel Mathias of Riverview, Fla.; and sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Bill Carr of New Albany.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Marjorie E. Mathias, who died Aug. 10, 2001; and sisters, Darlene Dorris and Mary Henry.

Sylvia Delia Seabright
Nov. 25, 1922-June 23, 2002

A funeral service for Sylvia Delia Seabright, 79, of Newark, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Waters officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Mrs. Seabright, who retired from the laundry room at Licking Memorial Hospital, died June 23, 2002, at the LPN Health Care Facility. She was born Nov. 25, 1922, in Armstrong Mills, Ohio, to the late John and Ora Olive (Saffell) Goodman.

Mrs. Seabright was a member of the Centerville Christian Church in Belmont County, Ohio, J.I. Case Collectors Association, Harbor Hills Civic Association, and the Buckeye Lake Area Civic Association.

She is survived by a son, Paul W. (Judy) Seabright of Newark; sister, Violet Faircloth of Bethesda, Ohio; brother-in-law, Ralph G. Seabright of Hebron; aunt, Golda Mobley of Newark; grandchildren, Cheryl Seabright of Millersburg, Ohio, and John (Belinda) Seabright of Newark; great-granddaughter, Autumn Seabright of Newark; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell E. Seabright.

Friends may call from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark.

John Monroe Waring
June 11, 2002

A family graveside service for John Monroe Waring, 95, of St. Petersburg, Fla., will be held in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus.

Mr. Waring died June 11, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Mr. Waring had lived in Florida since 1968. He formerly lived in Granville and moved to Sarasota, Fla., and then to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1997. He worked at The Ohio Company in Columbus for 33 years.

Mr. Waring was an alumni of Blair Academy and Lehigh University, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Society. He was Past District Governor of Ohio Lions Club, decendent of an early Long Island family and belonged to the Mayflower Society, the S.A.R., and was the Past President of the Hugenat Society of Florida.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy (Hague) Waring; daughter, Virginia Thiesenhusen of Middleton, Wis.; son, John M. Waring Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
