James P. Hoyng

James P. Hoyng, 66, of 4260 Kuhn Road, Celina, died suddenly at 10:39 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in the Dayton Heart Hospital.

He was born June 17, 1934, in Celina, the son of LaMont and Agnes Losche Hoyng.

Mr. Hoyng married the former Betty Marker, May 4, 1963, in Coldwater, and she survives.

He owned and operated J.F. Hoyng Hardware in Coldwater.

Mr. Hoyng held several memberships, including the Coldwater Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus Council in 1991, American Legion Post 470 and the Coldwater Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5135, having served in the U.S. Army as Special Police.
He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Men's Holy Name of the Church.

He is survived by two sons, Pat (Bev) Hoyng of Dublin and Doug (Jenny) Hoyng of Coldwater; three daughters, Beck Hoyng of Orlando, Fla., Beth (Kyle) Schritz of Coldwater and Monica (Duane) Forsthoff of Dayton; and five grandchildren.

Darius E. Popp

Darius E. Popp, 21, of Huntsville, died at 5:47 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the emergency room at Mary Rutan Hospital.

He was born Dec. 25, 1979, in Kenton, a son of Dennis E. and Shirley Marie Wenger Popp.

A 1998 graduate of Indian Lake High School, he was employed at Honda Transmission Manufacturing in Russells Point.

Survivors include his mother and her companion, Marie Popp and Michael Lawson of Huntsville; his father, Dennis E. Popp of West Mansfield; two half sisters, Sherri Davis of Springfield and Mrs. Aaron (Samantha) Hiltibrand of Urbana; maternal grandparents, Marion and Shirley Wenger of West Liberty; paternal grandmother, Jane Popp of Bellefontaine; and many aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Gene Popp.

Dr. J. Anthony Wurtsbaugh
Dr. J. Anthony Wurtsbaugh, 55, of Bellefontaine, died at 5:47 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Heartland of Bellefontaine.

He was born Aug. 23, 1945, in Marion, a son of Howard Everett and Margaret Louise Hostetter Wurtsbaugh, both of whom preceded him in death. On Feb. 14, 1970, he married Paula Rose Wurtsbaugh in Bellefontaine and she survives.

Dr. Wurtsbaugh was a 1963 graduate of Richwood High School; a 1967 graduate of Dennison University; and a 1971 graduate of The Ohio State University Medical School. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967-78, reaching the rank of major. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and deacon.

He also was a member and past worshipful master of the Bellefontaine Masonic Lodge 209 F&AM; a companion and past excellent high priest of Lafayette Chapter 60 Royal Arch Masons; a companion and past illustrious master of Logan Council 85 Royal and Select Masons; a sir knight and serving a sword bearer of Bellefontaine Commandery 61 Knight Templar; a member of the Order of Ohio Order of High Priesthood and the Ohio Council of Anointed Kings; a member of all bodies of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry; 32nd Degree of the Valley of Dayton Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States; a noble of Antioch Temple Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and the Logan County Scottish Rite Club and the Logan County Shrine Club; an elected trustee for all the Masonic bodies of Bellefontaine; an elected member of the Bellefontaine Masonic Center Association and a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

Other survivors include three daughters, Megan and her husband Jason Hummer of Cincinnati; Marnie and Paige Wurtsbaugh, both of Upper Sandusky; a brother and his wife Randy Dean and Rachel Wurtsbaugh of Williston, Vt.; an aunt and her husband, Arleen and Robert F. Blue of Richwood; several nieces and nephews; and a grandchild, Brighton Roe Hummer.

Lucille M. Ridgeway Krouse

Lucille M. Ridgeway Krouse, 85, of Worcester, Mass., formerly of Ohio and Indiana, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Integrated Health Service Center in Worcester following a long illness.

Mrs. Krouse was born Nov. 27, 1915, in Springfield, the daughter of Arthur and Nellie Leisure Ridgeway.

She was first married to Alfred Woodruff and he preceded her in death in 1955. She then married Henry Krouse and he preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1988.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America and the American Association of Retired Persons.

She is survived by two sons, Harry Woodruff of Marble Falls, Texas and David Krouse of Aurora, Ind.; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Schmael of Almeida, Calif.; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Ted K. Conley

Ted K. Conley, 38, of Belle Center, died at 10:45 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at his residence.

He was born in Bellefontaine on March 21, 1962, a son of the late Arnold and Jean Ann Plikerd Conley.

A 1981 graduate of Benjamin Logan High School, he was a truck driver for Melvin Cain Trucking.

Survivors include two brothers, Terry (Susan) Conley of DeGraff and Chris (D'Anne) Conley of Belle Center; three nephews, Adam and Jason Conley of Belle Center and Brian Conley of DeGraff; and several aunts and uncles.

Genevieve Watt Rambo
Genevieve Watt Rambo, 76, of 11438 Ash St., Avondale, Lakeview, died at her residence at 12:11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001.

She was born in Marion on Jan. 23, 1924, a daughter of the late Boyd R. and Rosa M. Cramner Watt.

She married Ted J. Rambo on Oct. 26, 1948, and he preceded her in death June 25, 1975.

Mrs. Rambo had been a nurse in the intensive care unit at Marion General Hospital, and had resided in Marion most of her life.

She is survived by one brother, Donald M. Watt of Mission Viejo, Calif.; three brothers-in-law, Donnie M. Pearson of Marion, Oscar Rambo of Missouri and Jay Rambo of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Watt; and one sister, Margaret E. Pearson.

Richard Ray Shirk Sr.
Richard Ray Shirk Sr., 57, of Kenton, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the Hardin Hills Health Center, Kenton.

He was born Feb. 2, 1943, in Kenton, a son of the late Raymond and Jeannette Moore Shirk.

He married and divorced Sharon Gillen of Belle Center.

A veteran of the United States Army, he was employed as a welder. Mr. Shirk was a member of AMVETS Post 1994, AMVETS Post 20, and VFW Post 3333. He also was a member of BPOElks, Kenton Lodge.

Survivors include three sons, Todd Shirk of Bellefontaine, Rodney Chamberlain of Kenton and Richard Ray Shirk Jr. of Ada; two daughters, Michelle Kayleen Shirk of Bellefontaine and Tenna Steed of Bellefontaine; special friend, Lois Shroyer of Kenton; and eight grandchildren.

Other survivors include two brothers, David (Karen) Shirk of Alger and Jack (Monika) Shirk of Kenton; and three sisters, Alice Haudenschield of Ridgeway, Susan (Randall) Hertel of Findlay and Marilyn (Danny) Ray of Kenton.

Alice Catherine Henderson Baughman

Alice Catherine Henderson Baughman, 83, of West Liberty, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Houston Hospital, West, in Texas.

She was born April 9, 1917, in Logan County, a daughter of the late Frank O. and Blanche D. Chester Smith.

Mrs. Baughman was a homemaker and attended the West Liberty Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Julian Burdine; second husband, Tracy Henderson; and on Jan. 10, 2000, by her third husband, Arthur L. Baughman. Also deceased are one son, Lyn Burdine; one daughter, Pat Elmyra; and one brother, Carl Smith.

Survivors include two sons, Owen Keith Henderson of Florida and Bart Baughman of Covina, Calif.; one daughter, Judi Elaine Cummings of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild and a nephew, Richard Smith of Kettering.

Edward A. Bewley
Longtime Bellefontaine educator Edward A. Bewley died at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Heartland of Bellefontaine. He was 89.

The Bellefontaine native was born Sept. 24, 1911, the son of the late H.R. and Verna Brattain Bewley.

He married Katherine Newell in Bellefontaine on June 11, 1936. She died March 1, 1995.

Mr. Bewley was a teacher at Bellefontaine High School from 1935 to 1973. He was a past president of the Bellefontaine Education Association and had been an assistant volunteer basketball coach under coach H.A. Dodd as well as scorekeeper. During his summer vacations from teaching, he worked for the Logan County Highway Department. After his retirement from teaching, he worked at the former Logan Sports Center.

He was a 1929 graduate of Bellefontaine High School, where he served as class president and member of the basketball team from 1927 to 1929. He attended Wittenberg University and graduated from Ohio University.

Mr. Bewley was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and the Logan County Historical Society.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Ronald) Stewart of Bellefontaine and Carol (Richard) Nagel of Bowie, Md.; three grandchildren, David (Diane) Nagel of Waldorf, Md., Julianne (Michael) Renz of Dublin, and Matthew (Marcia) Nagel of Toledo; four great-grandchildren, Rachel, Paige and Eric Renz and Andrew Nagel; and one sister, Helen Ashby of Greensboro, N.C.

Betty Jane Kerns
Betty Jean Kerns, 77, of Avondale, Lakeview, died at 10:58 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Lima Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 21, 1923, in Hardin County, a daughter of the late Samuel Dwain and Mildred Mary Yazel Patterson.

On Nov. 15, 1945, in Wapakoneta, she married James Wesley Kerns, who preceded her in death March 12, 1980.

Survivors include four daughters, Julia Ann (John) Campbell, Mildred Eileen Lyons, and Vanessa Jean (Frank) Burt, all of Lakeview, and Pamela Jo Kerns of Sidney; one sister, Koneta Fern Coolidge of Waynesfield; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were one son, Dwain Wesley Kerns; one daughter, Rosamund Fern Burt; one brother, Ronald Lee Patterson; and one sister, Phyllis June Patterson.

Mrs. Kerns was a homemaker.

Audra Sue Thurman Karns

Audra Sue Thurman Karns, 24, of Zelienople, Pa., formerly of Lakeview, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, in Ocracoke Health Center in Ocracoke, N.C.

Born on Dec. 9, 1976, in Bellefontaine, she was a 1995 graduate of Indian Lake High School, and had been employed at Champaign National Bank in Russells Point and Urbana. She was a member of the Church of God in Evans City, Pa., and was a homemaker.

She married Andrew A. Karns on Feb. 24, 2001, and he survives along with her mother and stepfather, Patty and Sam Everhart of Lakeview; her father, Gene Thurman of Marysville; two sisters, Jennifer Thurman Cotterman of Russells Point and Stefanie Everhart of Lakeview; a brother, David Everhart of Lakeview; a stepsister, Briana Thurman of Marion; maternal grandparents, Forrest and Helen Lykins of Lakeview; paternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Doyle and Ann Thurman of Urbana; maternal stepgrandmother, Helen Everhart of Lewistown; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
