Carl M. Evans

Carl M. Evans, 78, of Sidney died at 11:46 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2002, in Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney.

He was born June 23, 1924, in Logan County, a son of the late Carl and Nellie Hone Evans.

On June 23, 1946, he married Ruth Ellen Young, who survives in Sidney. An Army veteran from 1942 to 1946, he served in Germany during World War II.

He was a member of the Sidney Noon Kiwanis Club, the Sidney American Legion Post 217, the Sidney Senior Citizens, Temperance Lodge 73 F&AM of Sidney, the Shelby County 32nd Club, the Antioch Shrine Club, the National Rifle Association, the Valley City Club and the Shelby County Fish and Game Club.

A retired district supervisor for the Dayton Power and Light Co., he attended St. John's Lutheran Church in Sidney.

Also surviving are sisters, Mrs. Philip (Jean) House of Kettering and Mrs. Lloyd (Phyllis) Davis of Bellefontaine.

He also was preceded in death by one son.

Pauline C. King
Pauline C. King, 93, of Bellefontaine, died at 6 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2002, in Green Hills Care Center, West Liberty.

She was born in Champaign County on Nov. 23, 1908, a daughter of the late Charles Albert and Edna Hanger Circle.

On June 9, 1929, she married Ted King in West Liberty and he preceded her in death July 3, 1954. Four brothers and one sister also preceded her in death.

She is survived by four sons, John P. (Marilyn) King of Piqua and Wayne (Beverly) King, K. Dale (Janice) King and Larry (Joyce) King, all of Bellefontaine; one daughter, Phyllis (Richard) Moore of Belle Center; 35 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and its Anne Circle and was a cook at Mary Rutan Hospital.

John J. Davie
John J. Davie, 72, of Bellefontaine, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus following an extended illness.

He retired in 1985, following 30 years of dedicated service with Siemens in Bellefontaine. He attended Zanesfield High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Davie always looked forward to his annual spring mushroom hunts and fall fishing trips with Jim and George Organ. He enjoyed football and basketball, especially on the high school and college levels. As a young man, he was a Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast. His greatest joy came from watching his grandsons learn to swim, play t-ball and soccer.

He was born March 7, 1930 in Raymond to the late Carl J. and Ruth Grant Davie. Also preceding him in death were a granddaughter, Jaylyn Johnson; five brothers, Nathaniel "Shan" Davie, Carl Davie Jr., James Harold "Dutch" Davie, Tom Davie and Ward "Herk" Davie; and four sisters, Esther Beightler, Ruby Fisher, Laura Jean Penny and Joy Brehm.

Survivors include his wife of over 46 years, Betty Mayer Davie, to whom he was married on Sept. 26, 1956, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Marysville; a daughter, Tina (Norm) Johnson of West Mansfield; two grandsons, Landon and Cameron Johnson; a sister, Janet Anderson of Delaware; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Davie and Beulah Davie both of Bellefontaine, Shirley Davie of Mt. Victory and LaDonna Davie of Marysville; a brother-in-law, Bob Brehm of Raymond; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Frances Lucille Elliott
Frances Lucille Elliott, 79, a longtime resident of West Mansfield, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at her home following a short illness.

A loving homemaker, she was a faithful member of the West Mansfield United Methodist Church. The 1942 graduate of West Mansfield High School, was a member of the Silver Circle of King's Daughters. She cherished her friendships with her classmates and was very honored to have hosted her 60th class reunion at her home in May. She possessed a terrific sense of humor and was a great source of inspiration to her family. She participated in the 2002 Logan County Cancer Society's Relay for Life and helped raise $1,200.

She loved flowers and fishing and was a devoted fan of the Cincinnati Reds and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren and her greatest joy came from cooking meals for her family.

One of seven children, she was born March 16, 1923, in Lower Salem to the late James Forrest and Anna Ellen Myers Carpenter. She married Neal D. Elliott on Feb. 2, 1944, and he preceded her in death Aug. 23, 2000. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Lawrence, Wayne "Mike," and Forrest Carpenter; and two sisters, Betty Myers and Ruth Elsasser.

Survivors include her daughter, Shonia (Robert) Stevenson of West Mansfield; three sons, James (Twyla) Elliott, Bartt (Carol) Elliot and Brett Elliott, all of West Mansfield; 11 grandchildren, Sean Stevenson, Scott (Trisha) Stevenson, Natalie Stevenson, Justin, Logan, Levi, Tyler and Codi Elliott, Josh (Cori) Orahood, Jason (Sara) Orahood and Jessie Orahood; nine greatt-grandchildren; a brother, Harry Carpenter of West Liberty; three brothers-in-law, Theodore "Red" Elsasser of Kenton, Robert D. (Charlene) Elliott of West Mansfield; her classmates and countless other friends and neighbors.

Darren R. Kidwell
Darren R. Kidwell, 37, of Riverside, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at his residence. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Trent D. Southard; grandfather, James M. Kidwell; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mildred and Maurice Artkamp; brother, Dustin Kidwell; and maternal grandparents, Valmore and Bernice Jeannotte.

Survivors include his wife of 14 years, the former Joyce K. Artkamp; a daughter Kate, and a son Christian, all at home; his mother, Carol G. Kidwell of Bellefontaine; his father, Jerry (Carolyn) Kidwell of Lewisburg; paternal grandmother, Geraldine Rose Kidwell of Carlisle; three sisters, Alison Miller, Audra (Ronzle) Boggs of Bellefontaine and Arin (Phillip) Cook; a brother, Dean (Tansi) Kidwell of Alabama; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Anita (Darrell) Shryer of Centerville, Doug Artkamp, James (April) Artkamp and Sharon (Ron) Greene, all of Beavercreek, and Deborah (Bill) Louderback of Arizona; 21 nieces and nephews; seven great-nephews and many friends.

He was a manager of the hunting and fishing departments at Dick's Sporting Goods in Beavercreek.

A 1983 graduate of Benjamin Logan High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the National Guard Reserves. He was an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed hunting, fishing and NASCAR racing, and was a member of the Moose Lodge at Indian Lake.

He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, brother-in-law and uncle.

Gary Robert Alexander
Gary Robert Alexander, 46, of Loughman, Fla., and formerly of Bellefontaine, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, from injuries received in an auto accident in Tampa, Fla.

He was born Dec. 30, 1956, a son of Paul M. Alexander, who survives in Loughman, and the late Ellen Louise Alexander.

He was employed as a salesman for Haines City Auto and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Haines City, Fla. He moved to Florida 10 years ago from Bellefontaine.

Survivors also include two brothers, James Alexander of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Thomas Alexander of Cable; three sisters, Sally Groves of Bellefontaine, Virginia Martin of Salem, Ark., and Cynthia Rose of Columbus.

Cleo M. Clegg

Cleo M. Clegg, 82, of West Liberty and formerly of Lima, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, in her residence.

She was born in Quincy on July 26, 1920, a daughter of the late Thayer and Alice Carpenter Beaty.

She married William Clegg in 1949 and he preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 1998.

She is survived by one daughter, Noritta (Donald) Roush of West Liberty; one brother, William Beaty of South Carolina; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Duane Clegg, and two great-grandchildren.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Middleburg United Methodist Church.

Guy E. Davis
Guy E. Davis, 77, of 409 New St., Sidney, died at 6:25 p.m., Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Sidney.

The Wapakoneta native and a son of the late Cleve and Mary Ellen Swink Davis was born Aug. 10, 1925.

On Sept. 25, 1948, he married Joyce Kelley, who survives along with two daughters, Mrs. John (Toni) McPherson of Bellefontaine and Mrs. Steve (Vicki) Dowler of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Kelley Davis of Richmond, Va., and Bret Davis of Sidney; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and one grandchild.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and avid golfer, he was a member of the Moose Lodge and the First Church of God, both in Sidney. He retired from the former Uhlman's Department Store after 45 years of service.

Betty E. Hibbs
Former Huntsville resident Betty E. Hibbs, 79, of 741 E. Water St., Urbana, died at 2:20 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, in Heartland of Urbana.

She was born in Dayton on June 10, 1923, a daughter of the late Forrest and Gladys Harnish Richter.

Her husband, Robert Hibbs, died May 18, 1993.

She was a lifelong homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Hibbs-Paessun of St. Paris; two granddaughters, Ann Montgomery and Maria Hopkins; three great-grandchildren, T.J. Montgomery, Sean Ostrander and Joey Ostrander; a brother, Donald (Patricia) Schultz of Denver; and a sister, Ronald (Nancy) Apple of Cookville, Tenn.
