Lee Junior Holycross Sr.

Lee Junior Holycross Sr., 75, of Bellefontaine, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Mary Rutan Hospital.

He was born in North Lewisburg on April 24, 1932, a son of the late Virgil Lee and Rudy Sadie Reames Holycross. On Feb. 9, 1954, he married the former Emma Louise Cook in Marysville, and she preceded him in death Jan. 24, 2008. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Holycross, and a sister, Anna Mae Tevis.

Survivors include three sons, Lee Junior (Dora) Holycross Jr. and Thomas (Judy Freels) Holycross, both of Bellefontaine, and James (Patricia) Holycross of Columbus; three daughters, Virginia (Oakley) Castle and Jacqueline (Robert Tartt) Hurley, both of Bellefontaine, and Catherine (Matt Bollack) Campbell of Marysville; 22 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; four brothers, George (Deanna) Holycross and Larry (Cindy Crawford) Holycross, both of Bellefontaine, Fred (Sara) Holycross of Lebanon, Tenn., and Carroll (Shirley) Holycross of Cooksville, Tenn.; four sisters, Mary Burgess of Cleveland and Jennie Mae (Rick) Slade, Phyllis (Gary) Butler and Sharon Reames, all of Bellefontaine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A farmer, he enjoyed fishing.

Pastor Michael Sammons conducts a graveside service at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bellefontaine Cemetery, following visitation from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choices.

Dorothy “Mimi” M. Strawser

Dorothy “Mimi” M. Strawser, 93, of Rushsylvania, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at her daughter’s residence in Rushsylvania.

She was born in Harper on April 24, 1914, a daughter of the late Glenn and Blanche Chapman Miller. Her husband, Truman Aubrey Strawser, also preceded her in death July 7, 1945.

Survivors include a son, Glenn (Shirley) Strawser of Rushsylvania; two daughters, Gloria (Jack) Daines of West Liberty and Alice Strawser of Rushsylvania; a sister, Helen Mitchell of Austin, Texas; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A librarian at Rushsylvania Library for 52 years, she was a 1933 Rushsylvania High School graduate. She was a member of the Rushsylvania Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Whiley Guild.

She also served as a poll worker in Rushsylvania for the Logan County Board of Elections and was a life member of the Eagles Women’s Auxiliary in Bellefontaine.

The Revs. Evan Wall, Lloyd Ferguson and Russell Williams conduct a funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eichholtz Funeral Home, Rushsylvania, where calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today. Burial is in Rushsylvania Cemetery.

James C. 'Fletch' Turner

James C. 'Fletch' Turner, 46, of Bellefontaine, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, in his home.

He was born in Yokohama, Japan, on Oct. 3, 1961, a son of Kenneth E. and Lucy M. Azuma Shigeko Turner, of Bellefontaine.

Survivors include sons, James Skidmore of Bellefontaine and Quinten Turner of West Mansfield; daughter, Samantha Turner of West Mansfield; sisters, Jennifer Nicol, Janet Turner and Angela Mathews, all of Bellefontaine, and Michele (David) Fischbach of Ottoville; stepbrother, John (Jody) Turner of Versailles; stepsister, Barbara (Bobby) Wade of Harrisburg, Pa.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

A 1979 graduate of Bellefontaine High School, he worked for AGC Automotive and enjoyed his cars and motorcycle, flying remote-controlled airplanes, music and playing the guitar.

No calling hours are planned. Gene Marine conducts a memorial service at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine.

Gertrude E. Brown

Gertrude E. Brown, 93, of Lima, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 8, 2008.

She was born in West Mansfield on Nov. 7, 1914, a daughter of the late Lanson and Lena Stanley Garwood. O

n Aug. 23, 1937, she married Carol O. Brown, and he preceded her in death Oct. 5, 1991. She also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dee Kristine Miracle; a brother, Bud; and two sisters, Monica and Nikki.

Survivors include two sons, Ronnie (Connie) Brown of DeGraff and Dick Brown of Columbus Grove; four daughters, Marcele Brown of Lima, Katie (Adam) Oatman of Sebring, Fla., Sheree (Ron) Knippen of Ft. Jennings and Debbie (Dave) Dunlap of Bluffton; 11 grandchildren, Terri, Chris, Todd, Beth Ann, Mark, Mike, Steve, Kevin, Megan, Jen and Ryan; and nine great-grandchildren.

A homemaker, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.

Pastor Rich Rakay conducts a funeral at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chiles-Laman Shawnee Chapel, Lima, where calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial is in Rockport Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rita’s Medical Center’s Special Miracle Fund, in which a special fund is set up in her granddaughter’s memory and the charities of the donors’ choices.

Carol J. Collins

Carol J. Collins, 67, of Lakeview, died at 8:14 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2008, in her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Lima on Nov. 28, 1940, a daughter of the late Marion K. and Helen P. Shinaberry Vermillion.

On Dec. 14, 1958, she married David H. Collins and he survives, along with sons, Kevin (Karen) Collins of Lakeview and Tony (Sherri) Collins of Lima; daughter, Christina (David Johns) Collins of Lima; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Darlene (Tom) Rhinock of Lima.

A homemaker, she sold Avon for a number of years and was a charter member of the Lima TOPS Club 617. She enjoyed traveling, boating, crafts, gardening and her beloved miniature schnauzer, Misti.

The Rev. David R. Johns conducts a funeral at 1 p.m. Thursday at Shawnee Chapel Chiles-Laman Funeral Home, Lima, where calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today. Burial is in Allentown Cemetery, Lima.

Gladys V. Loomis

Gladys V. Loomis, 91, of Lakeland, Fla., died April 10, 2008, from complication of pneumonia.

A former Bellefontaine resident, she and her family moved to Lakeland, Fla., in 1957.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan Loomis; three sons, Bob and Jack Hill and C.F. “Chuck” Loomis; a grandson, Ricky King; and a great-granddaughter, Shannon Campbell.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly (T. Wayne) King of Bellefontaine and Mary (Leigh Jr.) Kimbrough of Lakeland; 14 grandchildren, including Jeff (Jill) Hill and sons, and Jacquie Ann Campbell and family, all of Bellefontaine; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted April 12 at Heath Funeral Chapel, with interment at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lakeland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.

Evelyn Hertzler

Evelyn Hertzler, 70, of Harrisonburg, Va., died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at her home.

She was born in Strasburg, Pa., on Feb. 24, 1938, a daughter of the late J. Elvin and Mary Groff.

On June 25, 1960, she married Don Hertzler and he survives, along with two sons, Barry (Dolores) Hertzler and Jerry (Lisa) Hertzler, both of Harrisonburg; a daughter, Sandy (Kevin) Byler of Harrisonburg; grandchildren, Josh, Megan, Rebekah and Luke Hertzler and Abby, Sara and Jesse Byler; a brother, Merle Groff of Pennsylvania; and two sisters, Edna Mueller of Maryland and Arlene Stewart of Connecticut.

A 1956 graduate of Lampeter Strasburg High School, she graduated from Eastern Mennonite College with a degree in elementary education in June 1960.

She began her teaching career in the New York City Public School System and in 1998, after 30 years of teaching elementary school, she retired from West Liberty-Salem Schools and moved to Harrisonburg to be near her grandchildren.

In New York, she developed and initiated a summer/after school program through a local church, and developed similar programs in West Liberty and Harrisonburg.

Evie had many friends who enriched her life. Church was a very important part of her life. She enjoyed singing, and sang in numerous choirs including the Gemeinschaft Singers, West Liberty Choral Society, Shenandoah Valley Choral Society, Bach Festival and the Harrisonburg Mennonite Church choir.

She also served on numerous church committees, including Roberta Webb Childcare Board for six years; Valley Brethren Mennonite Heritage Center; EMU alumni council as vice president and president; and Mennonite Women USA Executive Board for four years. At church, she chaired the Summer’s End Festival Committee and served as secretary for church council for four years.

In her spare time, Evie enjoyed gardening, piecing quilts, traveling and scrapbooking. Her seven grandchildren were a very special part of her life. As an avid sports fan, she enjoyed attending their soccer games.

A family tradition was getting together for Sunday dinner and Evie enjoyed cooking the meal. Evie donated her body to the State Anatomical Program of the Virginia Department of Health.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg, Va. Pastors Mark Keller and Craig Maven conduct a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church, where friends may call one hour prior.

Janice Garber Orders

Janice Garber Orders of Bellefontaine died peacefully and unexpectedly Friday, May 30, 2008.

She was born in Dayton and is survived by her parents, Warren J. and Doris E. Hamblin Garber of Huber Heights; a daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” Orders-Fraim; grandchildren, Cassandra and Matthew Fraim of Upper Arlington; and a brother, Dean (Vicky) Garber of Huber Heights.

A member of the United Methodist Church, she attended Dayton Public Schools, graduated from Bellefontaine High School and was employed at Honda for more than 20 years. She will also be fondly remembered and greatly missed by the extended Garber family, many colleagues, countless friends and the Orders family.

The Rev. Judith Doran of the St. Paul Episcopal Church, Oakwood, conducts a graveside service at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens, 11890 N. Dixie Road, Tipp City. Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Walter-Schoedinger Funeral Home, Urbana.

Glenn 'Mike' Gaines

Glenn “Mike” Gaines, 46, of Lima, and formerly of Bellefontaine, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, in St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima.

He was born in Martins-Ferry on Oct. 14, 1961, a son of Raymond L. (Cara) Gaines and Joan E. Smith Gaines, both of whom survive in Bellefontaine.

Survivors also include a brother, Lee (Tammy) Gaines of Bellefontaine; sisters, Dajuan (Todd) Kindle of West Liberty and Denise Gaines of Columbus; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He attended the Methodist Church in Lima.

Pastor Michael L. Miles conducts a funeral at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Auburn Avenue Baptist Church. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine. Burial is in Highland Memorial Cemetery, West Liberty.

Marjorie 'Margie' Darlene Johnson

Marjorie “Margie” Darlene Johnson, 59, of West Liberty, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, in her residence.

She was born in Piqua on May 17, 1949, a daughter of the late Charles Cory and Doris Hilda Durand Friend. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Johnson.

Survivors include children, Jeri (Jason) Heater, Kristina (Robert) Montroy and Chad (Kelly) Johnson, all of Urbana; grandchildren, Emily, Luke, Gracie, Caleb, James “J.J.,” Brandon, Amy, Marcus, Mary, Chase, Aleena and Josiah; a sister, Sandra (Terry) Ferguson of Troy; and many nieces and nephews.

A Graham High School graduate, she was employed by Champaign Residential caring for others until she became disabled and couldn’t work. She was an active member of loving her children and grandchildren “unconditionally.”

The Rev. Floyd Lundy conducts a funeral at 10 a.m. Monday at Walter-Schoedinger Funeral Home, Urbana, where calling is from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Burial follows in Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana, with pallbearers Jr. Ferguson, Brad Ferguson, Larry Johnson Jr., Lester Johnson, Ty Skaggs and Davie Drunkenbroad.
