HOWARD JACKSON
Howard Jackson, 57, New Straitsville, died Thursday, May 18 at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.
Born June 17, 1942, Columbus, he was the son of the late Howard Jackson Sr.
Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Olive cemetery, South Perry.
No calling hours will be observed.
Arrangements are by Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur.

GWENDOLYN JONES
Gwendolyn Jones, 92, died Thursday, May 18 at Pickerington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Nov. 21, 1907, New Straitsville, daughter of the late James and Miriam Davis McGrady, she was the widow of Thomas B. Jones.
She was retired from the Xerox Corporation of Columbus and was a member of OES Blue Bell Chapter 151 of Shawnee.
Surviving are a son, Tom Jones of Reynoldsburg; a son-in-law, Jim Buchanan of Spencer, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwendolyn Ann Buchanan; three brothers, Harold, James and Richard McGrady; and a sister, Thelma Maxwell.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at J.E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Shawnee.
Interment will be in Shawnee cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 Sunday at the funeral home.
Eastern Starr services will be held 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The family suggests contributions be made to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 2101 S. Hamilton Road, Suite 104, Columbus, Ohio 43232.

HOMER E. ABELE
Homer E. "Pete" Abele, 83, McArthur, died Friday, May 12 at Huston Nursing Home, Hamden, after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years.
Born Nov. 21, 1916, Wellston, son of the late Oscar A. and Margaret Burke Abele, he was married to Addie R. Abele, who survives.
A 1934 graduate of Wellston High School, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 to 1936. He played professional baseball for the Cincinnati Reds minor league farm club in Nashville, Tenn., in 1938, then returned to Ohio to work for Anchor Hocking Glass Corp. in Lancaster and Austin Powder Co. in McArthur from 1938 to 1941.
He was an officer in the Ohio State Highway Patrol from 1941 to 1943 and for six months in 1946 after returning from military service. He enlisted as a cadet in the Army Air Corps during World War II in 1943 and served until 1946.
A student at Ohio University, studying pre-law from 1946 to 1948, he graduated from Ohio State University College of Law in 1953. While attending law school, he was elected and served as a representative in the Ohio General Assembly from 1949 to 1952 and was admitted to the Ohio State Bar Association in 1954. He was the assistant campaign manager for presidential candidate Sen. Robert A. Taft and attended the Republican National Convention in 1952. He served as lobbyist for the B&O Railroad and as legislative counsel for the Special Transportation Committee from 1953 to 1957. He served as solicitor for McArthur and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1956 and was chairman of the Vinton County Republican Executive Committee from 1954 to 1957.
He was elected to the 88th U.S. Congress in 1962 and served as a representative of Ohio's 10th District in the U.S. House of Representatives for one term from 1963 to 1965. He was elected judge, Fourth District Court of Appeals of Ohio, for four six-year terms commencing in 1966 and ending with his retirement in February 1991. He served as presiding judge of the Fourth District Court of Appeals from 1977 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1984, and was chief justice of the Ohio Court of Appeals in 1978. He also sat as a visiting judge on the Ohio Supreme Court.
A major in the Ohio State Highway Patrol Auxiliary, he administered the oath of office to every graduating class of the Patrol Academy from 1967 to 1991. He was the state department judge advocate for the Ohio American Legion, chairman of the court section of American Legion Buckeye Boys State from 1969 to 1979 and Boys State president from 1981 to 1982.
A life member of American Legion Post 303, McArthur, he was executive officer to the state commander. He was a Vinton County trustee of the Southeast Ohio Regional Council; past president of the McArthur Lions Club; life member of the Society of the South Pole; and member of the Black Diamond Lodge of Wellston, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Taberah Shrine Club and Aladdin Temple Shrine.
He also derived great pleasure from tending to his black walnut tree farm.
Also surviving are a daughter, Terry Abele Smith of Garland, Texas; and sons Peter B. Abele of Athens and David A. "Andy" Abele of Columbus; three sisters, Edwina Geisz of Cincinnati, Margaret Reed of Columbus and Anne Meyer of Port Ewen, N.Y.; a brother, Bill Abele of Youngstown, Ariz.; and four grandchildren, Cassie, Austin, Alex and Chase.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Abele.
Throughout his life he touched the hearts of many people. He was an eternal optimist and greeted everyone with a big, sincere smile and friendly handshake. His appeal was felt by those on both sides of the political aisle, and transcended the confines of political partisanship. He was a genuinely nice man of high integrity, principles and virtue, who treated all with respect. He was the consummate role model for his children, and his persona was seemingly larger than life. He provided an extraordinary life experience for his family that will always be cherished, and that continues to this day through his legacy. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and friend, and a dedicated and tireless public servant. We miss him dearly and will always be very proud of him.
He has been cremated at his request, and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

DOROTHY N. GAINER
Dorothy N. Gainer, 78, Logan, died Saturday, May 20 at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster.
Born June 13, 1921, Ewing, the daughter of the late James C. Cottrill and Mary E. Baker Cottrill, she was the widow of Lee Gainer Jr., who passed away June 14, 1979.
She was a member of the People's Church of Logan.
Surviving are a son, Harold Eugene Gainer of Logan; two daughters, Mary Louise Souders and Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Smith, both of Logan; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith Gainer of Logan; and a special friend, Lloyd Moore of Logan.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Ernest Lee Gainer; a granddaughter; four brothers, Howard, Dale, Raymond and Jimmy Cottrill; and two sisters, Esther Mingus and Juanita Guess.
Funeral services will be 1 p. m. Wednesday at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan with the Rev. Roger Fidler officiating.
Entombment will be Wednesday in New Fairview cemetery Mausoleum, Rockbridge.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

MARY S. HARRISON
Mary S. Harrison, Lancaster, died Saturday, May 20 at her residence. Daughter of the late Seth and Ruth Sloan, she was the widow of John H. Harrison.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Greg (Helen) Hamilton, Mrs. Richard (Holly) Acton, Hope Daw all of Lancaster and Hedra Harrison of North Royalton; grandchildren, Mark Lendman of Indiana, Melisa Vines of South Carolina, Jessica Bandy of Georgia, John Hamilton of Columbus, Emily Hamilton of Lancaster; one great-grandson; two brothers, John and Sam Sloan, both of Logan; a sister, Winojean Hahn of Logan; and many nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by a son, John H. "Hal" Harrison; two brothers, Augustus and Richard Sloan; and a sister, Sara Jane Sloan.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Sherwood Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Rose cemetery.
No calling hours will be observed.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in her memory to Hedges Scholarship Fund of Mission Youth Scholarship Fund in care of First Presbyterian Church.

LEILA C. HUGHES
Leila C. Hughes, 89, Shawnee, died Friday, May 19 at Sunbridge Health Care, New Lexington.
Born April 20, 1911, the daughter of the late John and Lumie (Renoof) Norris, she was the widow of Carl R. Hughes.
Retired from the civil service, she was a member of Shawnee United Methodist Church, O.E.S. Bluebell Chapter 151 Shawnee.
Surviving are a niece, Maxine Norris; a special friend, Patty George; and several other nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, James, Willard and Bertrand; and two sisters, Susie and Alice.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at J.E. Humphrey Funeral Home, Shawnee.
Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Interment will be in Shawnee cemetery.
Friends may call anytime Tuesday. Family will be in attendance from 2 p.m. to 4 and after 6.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to The Sunbridge Resident Activity Fund, 920 S. Main St., New Lexington, 43764.

RUTH NICHOLS
Ruth Nichols, 98, Jacksonville, died Friday, May 19 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home, The Plains.
Born Feb. 28, 1902, Jobs, daughter of the late William and Mary Stedman Thompson, she was the widow of Clarence Nichols.
Graveside services were held today at 10 a.m. in Maplewood cemetery, Glouster.
No calling hours will be observed.
Family suggests memorial contributions be made to Jacksonville United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 247, Jacksonville, 45740.

FRANCISKA SMITH
Franciska Smith, 60, Reedsville, Ga., died Friday, May 19 in Reedsville, Ga.
Born March 2, 1940, Millfield, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Clara Peyatt Smith.
Graveside services will be 4 p.m. today in Hilltop cemetery, Millfield.
No calling hours will be observed.
Arrangements are by the Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster.

RICHARD J. FLEISCHER
Richard J. Fleischer, 71, Trimble, died Sunday, May 21 at his residence.
Born Oct. 13, 1928, son of the later John Fleischer and Gladys Peters Fleischer Popczy, he was the widower of Mary Eileen Scudder Fleischer.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Maplewood cemetery, Glouster.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 and 7 to 9 Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home, Murray City.

WILLIAM W. WYSKIVER
William W. "Bill" Wyskiver, 88, Union Furnace, died Sunday, May 21 at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.
Born Dec. 23, 1911, Logan, son of the late George and Anna Disbennett Wyskiver, he was married to Mary Wavalene Foltz Wyskiver, who survives.
Retired from Maxville Stone Quarry and a Union Furnace High School graduate, he was a member of the Union Furnace Methodist Church, former clerk for Washington Township, a heavy equipment operator, a farmer and a former employee of Hocking Valley Concrete.
Also surviving are a son, Donald E. (Kay) Wyskiver of Logan; two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Sylvia Jean) Beaty of Union Furnace and Mrs. Clark (Mary Louise) Davis of Lancaster; grandchildren, Cheryl Shumaker, RaJean Schrader, Jodi Poling, Brian Wyskiver, Brenda Wilson, Barbara Fowler, Bill Wyskiver, Brock Wyskiver, Greg Davis and Melissa Dinan; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Audra and Chuck Schrader, Maria and Kala Poling, Jeremy Wyskiver, Shane Shumaker, Corey, Brittney and Marley Wilson, Hilary and Rachel Amnah, Steve Fowler, Tyler Wyskiver, Lindsey and Riley Davis and Annamarie, Luke and Jack Dinan; and a sister, Maude Glaspell of Logan.
She also was preceded in death by infant twin daughters; five brothers and sisters; and seven half brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Furnace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William Airson officiating.
Burial services will be Wednesday in New Fairview cemetery Mausoleum, Rockbridge.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 and 7 to 9 today at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan, and one hour prior to the church service Wednesday.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Union Furnace United Methodist Church Children's Choir in memory of Bill Wyskiver, P.O. Box 36, Union Furnace, Ohio 43158.

MERLIN E. KLINE
Merlin E. Kline, 77, Logan, died Wednesday, May 24 at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.
Born Jan. 31, 1923, Hocking County, he was the son of the late John E. and Bessie Bails Kline.
A WW II Army Veteran, he was a retired carpenter.
Surviving are two sons, Terry L. (Pam) Kline of Logan and Kenny (Cathy) Kline of Haydenville; three brothers, Thurman Kline of Buchtel, Richard Kline of Nelsonville and Danny Kline of Logan; four sisters, Betty Thomas of Milton, Doris Chute of Columbus, Marge Moore of Logan and Pat Burdette of Glouster.
He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Merrill and Luther Kline.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Pleasant Valley cemetery, Frasure-Helber Road.
No calling hours will be observed.
Arrangements are by Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan.
