Joseph W. Lindsay

Joseph W. Lindsay, 83, of Lorain, passed away August 29, 2011 at New Life Hospice of St. Joseph, Lorain.
He was born May 7, 1928 in Glasgow, Pennsylvania, and moved to Midland, Pennsylvania in 1934, attended Midland schools, graduating in 1946. He lettered in football, basketball, and track. He attended Denison University and graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 1951 with a Degree in Metallurgy. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
He served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps in 1946 and 1947 and then again in 1951-1953. He retired from the Marine Reserve in 1962 with the rank of Captain.
Lindsay worked for the National Tube Company and later The United States Steel Corporation in Lorain, retiring in 1983 after 32 years of service. His employment included a number of different management positions and at retirement was Superintendent Specialty Finishing in The Pipe Mill Division.
He was very active in the community, serving on the Lorain City Schools Board of Education and the Lorain Recreation Board. He was a member of The Lorain Sports Hall of Fame Committee and The Lorain Senior Fellowship. He was an advisor to The Junior Achievement Program and on The Board of Directors of The Lorain Family Y. Lindsay was very active in the Presbyterian Church, being a member of First Presbyterian, Northminster and Heritage Presbyterian Church. He had been a trustee and ruling elder and has served on many church committees and boards.
He was an avid sports enthusiast. He played golf until he became ill and played slow pitch softball until age 63. He was a great supporter of the Admiral King High School sports programs and attended hundreds of games. He followed the Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers, and has been a season ticket holder of The Cleveland Browns for many years. He loved to tailgate with family and friends. He enjoyed reading, working in the yard, traveling, and spending time with his family. Every year he and his wife took a family vacation, which was their highlight of the year.
Joe married his childhood sweetheart in 1951, moving to Lorain in 1953. They have been blessed with four children and nine grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Eileen (Roach) Lindsay, daughters Martha (Paul) Huber of Pittsburgh, Karen (Mike) Kishman, Becky (Dave) Bickel of Lorain and a son Jeffrey (Kate) of Avon, grandchildren Lauren Kishman (Justin Seeton), Chris Huber, Tory Huber, Kathleen Kishman, Jeremy Bickel, Daniel Bickel, Colleen Kishman, Cole Lindsay, and Drew Lindsay. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas, and his parents, Millard and Martha Lindsay.
Friends may call Thursday, September 1, 2011, from 2-8 p.m. at Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. Fifth Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052. The Lorain Sports Hall of Fame Committee will conduct a memorial service at 7:00 p.m..
Services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, September 2, 2001 at Heritage Presbyterian Church, 515 N. Leavitt Road, Amherst, Ohio. The Reverend James Smucker and the Reverend Dr. Malcolm Peel will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. Military honors will be provided jointly by the American Legion Post 30 and The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 451.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 834, Amherst, Ohio 44001 or the Lutheran-Presbyterian Food Co-Op c/o Heritage Presbyterian Church P.O. Box 834, Amherst, Ohio 44001.

James Sutorus

James A. Sutorus, 91 of Lorain passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2011 at Amherst Manor Nursing Home following a long illness.
Mr. Sutorus was born in Elyria on December 18, 1919, the son of the late Joseph J and Ann (nee Adams) Sutorus. He was a graduate of Lorain High School in the class of 1937. He lived in Lorain most of his life.
He was a member of the Church of St. Peter in Lorain. He served in the US Navy during WW II.
Mr. Sutorus was a retired carpenter-dock master at the American Ship Building Co. in Lorain. He retired in 1982 following 42 years service. He was a member of the Lorain Moose Club. He enjoyed playing softball, bowling, golf and playing cards
He is survived by his daughters: Patricia (Robert) Wash of Lorain, Diane Sutorus of Vermilion, sons James D (Cher) Sutorus of Raleigh NC, Randy J (Carolyn) Sutorus of Broken Arrow, OK, 6 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, in 2009 he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia M. (nee Foltz) Sutorus, to whom he was married on Nov. 1939, his granddaughter Jennifer Beeson, great granddaughter Haley Austin, sisters Catherine Morrison, Marg Latham, Pat Knudsen, brothers Arther E Sutorus, and Joseph Sutorus.
Friends may call on Thursday, February 10, 2011 from 9:00 am until prayers at 10:30 am in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. Following our prayers, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of St. Peter Catholic Church, 3509 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, at 11:00 am with Father John C. Retar, officiating.
Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.

Erlene R. Thompson

Erlene R. Thompson, 90, (nee Pounds) of Lorain passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2011 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain surrounded by her family.
Erlene was born in New Site, MS on September 25, 1921, the daughter of the late Eldon R. and Nina L. (nee McKinney) Pounds. She was a 1940 graduate of New Site High School. She was a resident of Lorain from 1958-1976, when she and her husband retired and moved to Booneville, MS. In 2001, she returned to Lorain to be close to her family.
She was a member of Toledo Road Church of Christ.
Prior to her marriage, she had worked in a garment factory, while living on Booneville. She had worked at Sears as a catalog order processor in Memphis. During World War II, she worked at Boeing Aircraft Plant in Seattle, WA. Most recently she was a homemaker and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother.
Quilting, embroidery, traveling, cooking and spending time with her family was the enjoyment of her life.
Erlene is survived by daughter, Patricia A. Jeffords of Lorain, son Terry R. (Karen) Thompson, of Holly Springs, NC, grandchildren Shelli Zalek, Brenda Jeffords, Lynn Kaiser, Erin Zan, Jamey Whitehorn, Jason Whitehorn, Chad Thompson, Danielle Brown, great grandchildren, Amanda Curry, Michael Zalek, Nicholas Viczulis, Cory Pruitt, Joshua Kaiser, Ian Klingshirn, Laine Kaiser, Jared Kaiser, Troy Kaiser, Steven Zan, Beau Zan, Kaylynn Zan, Max Zan, Ty Zan, Leah Whitehorn, Ariel Whitehorn, Hunter Whitehorn, Amber Whitehorn, Skyler Brown, Haley Thompson, great great grandchildren Hayley Curry and Kasidy Curry, sisters Mary H Crabb and Virginia A. Goddard both of Booneville, MS.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Esco Thompson in 1995, a daughter Sandra K. Whitehorn in 1972, sisters Lola Faye Caver, her twin sister Lorene A. Eaton and a brother James T. Pounds.
Friends may call on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 from 2-4 & 7-9 at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.
Additionally, friends may call on Thursday, December 29, 2011 from 10:00 am until funeral services at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Mr. Jim Hiser will officiate.

Thomas M. Amato

Thomas M. Amato, age 72, of Lorain died Saturday at the Cleveland Clinic after a long illness.
He was born August 18, 1938 in Lorain and resided there all of his life.
Tom was a1956 graduate of Lorain High School and a 1960 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a degree in Chemistry. While at Bowling Green, he was a member of the TKE (Tau Kappa Epsilon) Fraternity. He recently celebrated his 50th Anniversary as an alumni of Bowling Green.
He had served in the US Army as a mess Sergeant and then the reserves for 6 years.
Tom worked as a sanitarian for the Health Department in Cuyahoga Falls in 1960 and then as a supervisor at the U S Steel/Kobe, retiring in 1996 after having worked in production planning, the conditioning/ rolling mill and the roll shop. After retirement, he worked part time in floral delivery for Eileen's Greens and Things.
Tom was a member of the Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church where he was a member of the building committee and had been an active member of the former Christ United Methodist Church, where had served as an usher, Administrative Council and a member of the Family Life Committee.
Tom was a member of the Lorain Senior Fellowship Group, where he participated in the Golf League. He previously had been a member of the US Steel Management Golf Team. He enjoyed reading, travel, movies and football. He especially enjoyed time spent with his family and attending his grandchildren's events.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia (nee Cook) of 47 years, daughters Christine Amato of Avon Lake, Lori Amato of Charlotte, NC and grandchildren Austin and Valerie Kryc of Avon Lake.
He was preceded in deathby his father Thomas J. in 1981, mother Dorothy (nee Brooks) in 1975 and Sister Norma in 1974.
Visitation will be Wednesday in the Schwartz,Spence Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 5th St., from 2 PM until 8 PM.
Funeral services will be Thursday, at 11 A.M. at the Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church, 3015 Meister Road, with the Pastor Greg Sellers officiating.
Burial in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.

Ethelene C. Linkous

Ethelene C. Linkous, 84 (nee Terry) of Lorain passed away on Friday, May 20, 2011 at her home unexpectedly.
Mrs. Linkous was born in Richcreek, VA on August 26, 1926 and has lived in Lorain for the past 59 years.
She was retired from Faroh Candy after 30 years of service.
Mrs. Linkous is survived by a daughter Petey (Randy) Heimann, son Robert W. (Andrea) Linkous both of Lorain grandchildren, Melissa Dovala, Christina Heimann, Jason Linkous, Megan Manicsic, great grandchildren Joey Heimann, Justin Milde, Sophie Linkous, and Hayley Dovala.
She was preceded in death by her husband Archie W. Linkous in 1999, an infant daughter, a granddaughter Tracey Linkous, brothers George and Deck Terry and a sister Nell Raines.
Services are private.
Burial will be in the Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon with Rev. Dr. Bradley Donahue, officiating.
Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to New Life Hospice, C/O Community Health Partners Foundation 3700 Kolbe Road Lorain, OH 44053-9905.
Arrangements are being handled by the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052.

Richard Allen Keener

Richard A. "Big Rick" Keener, 52 of Lorain passed away on Monday, April 25, 2011 at Mercy Regional Medical Center after becoming ill at his home.
Mr. Keener was born in Richwood, WV on April 13, 1959, the son of the late Holt L Keener and Gladys M (nee Canter) Keener, of Winter Haven Fl, who survives him. He has made his home in Lorain for the past 51 years.
He was a retired line assembly worker at the former Ford Motor Corp, in Lorain. He was a social member of the Knights of St. John's and was well known for his cooking ability at many of the Club's Steak Frys'.
Mr. Keener was a motorcycle enthusiast, enjoying many hours of riding with his longtime friend, Robert P. Prather of Norwalk. He enjoyed building model cars with his grandson and playing darts with another longtime friend Mickey Lilak of Lorain.
He is survived by his daughter Erica N. (Ted Farley) Keener of Lorain, son Joshua S. (Rosemary) Keener of Olsted Township, his grandson Michael J. Farley, his ex-wife and friend Juetta G. Keener, his mother, his brothers Randy D (Becky) Keener of Lake Wales, FL, Ronald L (Becky) Keener of Winter Haven, FL, several nieces and nephews and his dog, Shock.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his son Christopher M Keener.
Friends may call on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 11 am until services at 2 p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio.
Burial will be private in the Maple Grove cemetery, Vermilion.
