James M. Salvino Jr.
James "Sal" Michael Salvino Jr., 31, of Cleveland, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Toledo General Hospital of auto accident injuries suffered near Lima on Friday.

He was born in Cleveland and was a member of the North Royalton Diversion Program. He was a seven-year deputy of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department.

Mr. Salvino is survived by his wife, Amanda (MacLennan) of Cleveland; parents, James "Sal" and Joanne Salvino Sr. of Brunswick; sisters, Karen Barlett of Cleveland and Dawn Salvino of Wadsworth; brother, Brendan Salvino of Brunswick; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Marion MacLennan of Strongsville; and brother-in-law, Chad MacLennan of Strongsville.

He was preceded in death by Denise Salvino.

Service: 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Angels Church, 3644 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland. Father John J. Cregan will officiate.

Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Cleveland.

Visiting hours: 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Carlson, A Golden Rule Funeral Home, 1642 Pearl Road, Brunswick.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Children's Lung Foundation, 2300 Overlook Road Suite 406, Cleveland Heights, 44106.

Alberta M. Sochin
Alberta M. Sochin (nee Bass), 73, of Medina, passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Life Care Center of Medina.

She was born July 1, 1927, in Cuyahoga Heights to Michael and Grace (Schock) Bass. Mrs. Sochin was a resident of Medina County since 1995 and previously lived in Strongsville for many years. She was a retired bookkeeper.

She is survived by her daughters, Deborah (Robert) Paschall of Wooster and Lorraine Storch of Medina; brother, Albert Bass of Florida; sisters, Katherine Seith of Florida, Margaret Guidotti of Garfield Heights, Anna Mae Eichenberg of Fairview Park and Grace Grenig of Willoughby Hills; and grandchildren, Marty and Mathew Paschall, and Bryan Storch.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1994; parents; brother, Charles Bass; and sister, Lucille Carse.

Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carlson, A Golden Rule Funeral Home, 3477 Medina Road (River Styx Road at state Route 18).

Burial: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Crown Hill Cemetery, Twinsburg.

Visiting hours: 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Shayne M. Butcher
Shayne M. Butcher, 4, of Lodi, formerly of Chippewa Lake, made his spiritual transition on Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron, after a three-year struggle with cancer.

His courage was an inspiration to the countless lives his heart touched.

He is survived by his loving mother, Jennifer R. Butcher; grandparents, Barbara J. Douglass of Chippewa Lake and Robert L. Butcher Sr. of Philippi, W.Va.; great-grandparents, Evelyn and the late Stanley Serwatka, formerly of Clarksburg, W.Va., and Claudia and the late General L. Butcher of Clarksburg; aunts and uncles, Robin (nee Butcher) and David Patrick, and Robert and Lisa (nee Haddix) Butcher; and "special cousins," Eric and Brittany. He also leaves behind his special extended family of doctors and nurses at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron and numerous people who were special in his life.

Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, 765 N. Court St.

Visiting hours: 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made in Shayne's honor to the family.

Louise E. Evans
Louise E. Evans, 89, of Medina, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in Medina.

She was born in Petros, Tenn. Mrs. Evans was a member of Oliver Springs United Methodist Church and Eastern Star Chapter 211 in Oliver Springs, Tenn. She was a retired medical receptionist and also worked for Tennessee Coach Co.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and John O'Leary of Medina; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Carol Evans of Powell, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H.L. "Bill" Evans; sisters, Lee Jackson, Marie Brown, Inez Foster and Emma Ruth White; and brothers, Alton, Tom, Guy and J.B. Whitus.

Service: 8 p.m. Friday at Sharp Funeral Home, Oliver Springs.

Burial: Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens, Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Visiting hours: Two hours prior to the service Friday.

Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, is handling local arrangements.

Ralph Neptune
Ralph "Bob" Neptune, 77, of Lodi, passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at The Oaks at Medina.

He was born Oct. 7, 1923, to Cecil and Vesta Neptune in Barnsville, Ohio. Mr. Neptune was a retired plumber/pipe fitter for Local 42 in Norwalk. He was a sergeant in the 71st Recon Division during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty (nee Newcomer); daughters, Cheryle (Al) Meek and Cindy (Tom) White, both of Lodi; grandchildren, Fred (Karen) Smith of Wooster, Stacey (Kevin) Bittaker and Nicole (Chris) Benko, both of Seville, Lee (Pattie) White of Cleveland and Janet (David) Allison of Tennessee; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Dale (Faye) Neptune of Florida and Larry Neptune of Spencer; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Harold.

Service: 11 a.m. Thursday at Parker & Son Funeral Home, 210 Medina St., Lodi. Pastor Tim Neptune will officiate.

Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery, Lodi.

Visiting hours: 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Victory Baptist Church, 8343 Harris Road, Lodi, 44254.

William H. O'Neill
William H. O'Neill, 71, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at his home following a period of declining health.

He was born and lived on the family farm in Westfield Township until 1994, when he moved to Wooster. Mr. O'Neill was an avid breeder of cattle and draft horses. His business career included being the owner of an insurance agency in Seville until he served as executive secretary to the director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture. He spent 20 years as a legislative consultant in Columbus and was past president of the Cleveland Union Stockyards. He was a member of Seville United Methodist Church and the Athletic Club of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian M. (Rumburg), and daughter, Erin L. O'Neill of Seville.

Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Seville United Methodist Church.

Burial: Mound Hill Cemetery, Seville.

Visiting hours: 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Armstrong-Waite Funeral Home in Seville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Seville United Methodist Church or Hospice of Wayne County.

Laurel S. Slack
Laurel Sue Slack (nee Breckenridge), 47, of Spencer, went to be with our Lord on Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, after a heroic battle with stiff-man syndrome.

Laurie was born Nov. 17, 1953. She was an active member of her community and a proud supporter of Black River Athletics, where all four of her children attended school. She was a passionate home-health aide in Medina County and a loving mother to her children. She lived to laugh with her friends and family. She was a gifted artist and animal lover. Laurie spread her enthusiasm and love for life to all who knew her.

She will be greatly missed by her loving husband of 23 years, Frederick; children, Amanda (Cory) Hamilton of Virginia Beach, Va., and Heather, Julia and Jeremiah, all at home; grandsons, Cory and Noah; parents, Orville and Betty Breckenridge of Medina; brothers, Gary Breckenridge of Brunswick, Dale (Sally) Breckenridge of Colorado and Edward (Nadir) Zinser of Pennsylvania; and a host of other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Roy Breckenridge.

Memorial service: 5 p.m. Saturday at Homerville Community Center (old Homer Elementary School), with the Rev. Pete Underwood officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Farmers Savings Bank in Spencer.

Thelma M. Smith
Thelma M. Smith, 90, formerly of Lodi, passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Meadowview Care Center in Seville.

She was born July 12, 1910, in Dayton, Tenn., to James and Sally Oldham Shadwick. She resided in Michigan before moving to Lodi in 1983. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughters, Annie Bell (George) Graham, Opal (Jerry) Snodderly and Kathrine Smith, all of Michigan, and Linda (Todd) Vance of Creston; sons, Ernest Ray Smith of Michigan and Thomas Leon (Reggie) Smith of Wellington; 17 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; a number of great-great-grandchildren; sister, Olie Minton of Tennessee; and brothers, David, James (Stella) and Donald Oldham, all of Tennessee.

Graveside service: 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Lodi. Pastor David Mullins of Millersburg will officiate.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of donor's choice.

Roger F. Hermann
Roger F. Hermann, 74, of Medina, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Medina General Hospital.

He was born Aug. 17, 1926, to Raymond and Anna Hermann in Westview, near Olmsted Falls, and lived in Medina County for 24 years after living in Cuyahoga County. Mr. Hermann was a retired insurance agent for Prudential Insurance Co., where he worked for 24 years. He attended Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Valley City. He dearly loved his large family and his favorite sports were fishing and teasing his loved ones. He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Hermann is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Nancy; children, Rory (Marilyn) Hermann and Tracy Hermann, both of Florida, Gary (Kim) Hermann and Jody Hermann, both of Cleveland, Kevin (Margaret) Hermann of Michigan and Tom (Deanna) Neumeyer and Michele (Scott) Beard, both of Valley City; son-in-law, Bob Strawn of Strongsville; and grandchildren, Beth, Emily, Rory Michael, Jami, Kit, Connor, Corey, Kyle, Claudia, Zachary, Jacob, Sarah, Steven, Terena, Tyler, Shana and Charles.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Marcy Hermann Strawn, in 1988, and his parents.

Service: 2:30 p.m. today at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2233 Abbeyville Road, Valley City. The Rev. Michael Oakley will officiate.

Burial: Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Visiting hours: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, 765 N. Court St.
