Carolyn Cotterman, 62, of Sidney, Oh, died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday January 20, 2004 in her residence. She was born March 2, 1941 in Troy, Oh. to the late Forrest and La Veir (McGillvary) Puterbaugh. She married Samuel A. Cotterman in 1969 in Troy, Oh. He preceded her in death Sept. 22, 1989.
Carolyn is survived by two daughters and Son-in-law, Ramona Estep of Piqua, Tonya and Carl Graham of Sidney, Oh, four step-daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Scott of Dayton, Oh, Dixie and Carl Ellis of Bradford, Oh, Donna Penny of Dayton, Oh, Bonnie and Hershel Mantooth of Springfield, Oh, two step-sons and daughter-in-law, Russell Cotterman of Urbana, Oh, David and Melissa Cotterman of Sidney, Oh. One brother, Wayne Puterbaugh of Fletcher, Oh, and one sister, Shirley Barton of Piqua, Oh and twelve grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers. She attended the Piqua Church of the Nazarene.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Polley officiating. Calling hours are Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be held at Forest Hill cemetery, Piqua Memorial Contributions may be made to Wilson Hospice Care Remembrance Fund, Wilson Memorial Hospital 915 West Michigan St., Sidney, Ohio 45365.

VIRGINIA E. SWANK, age 88, of Troy, Ohio died Wednesday January 7, 2004 at 7:40 A.M. at Heartland of Piqua Nursing Home. She was born March 3, 1915 in Troy, Ohio to the late Morris and Adelaide (Harding) Davis. She married George W. Swank in 1945 and he died in 1966.
Mrs. Swank was an LPN at Stouder Memorial Hospital for 45 years and retired in 1985.
Private services were held with burial in Riverside cemetery in Troy, Ohio. Arrangements by MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME.

Margaret M. Stiefel, 94, of Piqua, died at 7:00 a.m. Thursday Jan. 22, 2004 at Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy.
She was born May 5, 1905 in Piqua, OH to the late Frank and Emma (Francis) Berberich. She married Robert W. Stiefel on September 14, 1932 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Piqua. He preceded her in death October 16, 1990.
Mrs. Stiefel is survived by one daughter: Mrs. Rosemary Sanders, Port Richey, FL; three sons and daughters-in-law: Paul & Edna Stiefel, Piqua, OH Carl & Barbara Stiefel, Alliquippa, PA and John & Margaret Stiefel, North Little Rock, AR; eight grandchildren: Kathy & John Sherman, Piqua, Cheryl & Tim Francis, Troy, OH, Craig & Nancy Stiefel, Anna, OH, Steve & Audrey Stiefel, Piqua, OH, Joseph Stiefel, Lombard, IL, Shawn Andrew & Christine McQueen, Bemsalem, Pa. Tom & Donna Stiefel, N. Little Rock, AR, and 8 great-grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Piqua where she was a Sacristan for many years. She also belonged to the St. Claire Society at St. Boniface Church. She worked at The Kressge Co. for several years and was then employed by Zimmerman Jewelers in Piqua for 15 years. Margaret was a member of the Meat Cutters Retirees and a chaplain’s assistant at Piqua Memorial Hospital for 15 years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 26, at 11:00 am at St. Boniface Church, Piqua, with Rev. Fr. Angelo Caserta officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery, Piqua, OH. Calling hours will be from 2 – 5 pm on Sunday, January 25, at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua. A prayer service will be held at Sunday at 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Boniface Reserve Education Fund, 310 S. Downing St. Piqua, Oh. 45356 or Piqua Ambulance Fund, American Legion #184, 301 W. Water Street, Piqua, OH.

BRENDA L. DANKWORTH, age 56, of Piqua, Ohio, died Thursday February 5, 2004 at 10:45 P.M. at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. She was born December 26, 1947 in Sutton, WV, to the late Lee E. Masterson and Josephine Miller. She was married to Fred H. Wagner III who preceded her in death in 1998. She later married William E. Dankworth, Piqua. He survives.
Mrs. Dankworth is also survived by 1 Son: Fred H. (Hans) Wagner, IV, Cincinnati.; 1 Daughter: Monica R. Wagner of Piqua; 4 Step-Sons: Douglas Dankworth, MI, Bill Dankworth, Cincinnati, Jim Dankworth, Piqua, and Matthew Dankworth, Piqua; 4 Step-Daughters: Gail Ann Denning, Sidney, Lori Lampher, Piqua, Angie Thornton, Sidney, and Melissa Millard, Cincinnati; 1 Sister: Kim Carroll, Piqua; and 2 Grandchildren: Alexis and Ashleigh Rowe, Piqua; 12 Step-Grandchildren; 1 Niece: Cami Compton, Piqua; 1 Nephew: Eli Carroll, Piqua; 1 Aunt and Uncle: Ben and Irene Merman, CA; and 2 Cousins: Michael and Brian Merman, CA.
Mrs. Dankworth graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1966 and was employed by Fashion Bug as a Sales Associate for 18 years.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home in Piqua, O. with Pastor Andy Monnin officiating. Burial to follow at Miami Memorial Park in Covington, O. Calling hours will be Monday from 5-8 P.M. at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME.
Memorial contributions may be made to Brenda Dankworth Trust for the Benefit of the Grandchildren, Alexis and Ashleigh Rowe, C/O Thomas Buecker, Attorney, P.O. Box 1215, Piqua, OH 45356.

ELIZABETH A. (SNOOKY) JOLLIFF, age 67, of Houston, Ohio, died Sunday February 8, 2004 at 8 P.M. She was born in Bangor, Maine December 7, 1936 to the late Clyde and Anita (Gilmore) Myers. She married Norman R. Jolliff, Sr. December 24, 1954 in Brewer, Maine and he preceded her in death July 22, 2002.
Surviving is 1 Daughter and Son-In-Law: Anita and Sammy Irvin of Houston, Ohio; 1 Son and Daughter-In-Law: Norman and Linda Jolliff, Jr. of Houston, Ohio.
3 Grandchildren: Dawn Jolliff of Houston, Ohio; Talisha Jolliff of Piqua, Ohio; Aliya and Bill Purtee of Troy, Ohio. 1 Great Granddaughter: Katelyn Purtee of Troy, Ohio.
2 Sisters: Myrtle & John Gable of Pottstown, Pennsylvania and Judy Smith of Bangor, Maine. 3 Brothers: Bill Myers of Anna, Ohio; Clyde Myers of Pennsylvania and Louis Myers of Florida.
Mrs. Jolliff attended the Piqua Church of the Nazarene.
Funeral services will be held Saturday February 14, 2004 at 11 A.M. at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME with Rev. Lincoln Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday 5-7 P.M. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Wilson Hospice Care 915 W. Michigan St. Sidney, Ohio 45365.

BETTY D. THORNBERRY, 79, of Piqua, Oh. died at 3:27 p.m. Wednesday February 11, 2004, at her residence.
She was born July 17, 1924, in Piqua, Ohio, to the late Albert and Blanche (Lawrence) Mayo, Sr. She married Augustus (Gus) Thornberry in Piqua on August 17, 1946. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1996.
Mrs. Thornberry is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: Keith & Joyce Thornberry, Piqua; one daughter & son-in-law: Cynthia & Van Via, Piqua; one son-in-law: Robert Smith, Piqua; 1 brother: Danny Mayo, Piqua; one sister: Mary Evans, Piqua; 7 grandchildren: Lisa Bray, Piqua, Brian Via, Houston, Rob Smith, Piqua, Chris Lockhard, Virginia, Libby Daniels, Findley, Vanassa Davis, Sidney, Paul (P. J.) Thornberry, Cincinnati; 9 great-grandchildren: Kendra Bray, Jordon Bray, Alissa Via, Cameron Via, Caleb Smith, Kayleigh Smith, Dior Smith, Morgan Davis and Gabby Daniels. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter: Darlene Smith and 2 granddaughters.
Mrs. Thornberry was a member of St. Boniface Church in Piqua. She was a homemaker.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday February 16, 2004, at St. Boniface Church in Piqua with Rev. Fr. Angelo Caserta officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery in Piqua. Calling Hours will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday February 15, at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua. A prayer service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Funeral Home.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Hospice of Miami County, P. O. Box 502, Troy, Ohio 45373, or St. Boniface Reserve Education Fund, 301 S. Downing Street, Piqua, Ohio 45356.

WILLIAM E. FOX, age 81, of Piqua, died Tuesday February 24, 2004 at 12:00 Noon at Harborside Nursing Home, Troy, Ohio. He was born in Urbana, Ohio January 10, 1923 to the late Elton J. and Winifred (Ramsey) Fox. He married Joyce A. Runkle on April 25, 1953 in Fletcher, OH. She survives.
He is also survived by 3 Sons and 1 Daughter-In-Law: Kyle R. Fox, Toledo, OH; Kristopher W. Fox, Piqua, OH; Kent (Chip) and Diane Fox, Piqua, OH; 2 Daughters and Sons-In-Law: Kathi & Michael Benoit, Plano, TX; and Kimberly & Joseph Staley, Piqua, OH; 10 Grandchildren: Nichole Baumbach, Corey & Kyle Fox, Kristin Fox, Bryant & Brody Fox, Michael & Katie Benoit, Joey & Shannon Staley and 2 Great Grandchildren: Jasper Baumbach and Lola Fox. Mr. Fox was preceded in death by 1 brother: Roger Fox, who was killed in action in Germany in World War II.
He graduated from Urbana High School in 1940. Bill came to Piqua, June 1, 1948, to become the news editor and staff announcer at Radio Station WPTW-AM. He had used his G. I. Bill to fill a teenaged dream of becoming a radio announcer. He earned a degree in radio and television at the Broadcasting Division of Cincinnati College of Music. He resigned from the radio station in August 1961 to take over the North Miami Valley Bureau of the Dayton Daily News office in Troy. He worked for the newspaper for 22 years, retiring June 30, 1983.
In addition to his radio announcing, he was a part time clerk for the Piqua City Commission in the 1950’s. When the Piqua Police Department formed the auxiliary unit “Signal Five” in 1950, Bill signed up and served 50 years on the unit. He also was a parking control officer for the department for 10 years.
Bill was an original member of the Piqua Players and was a former member of Church of the Epiphany, Urbana, OH.
Bill served in the U. S. Navy during World War II as a Radioman First Class Petty Officer aboard an LSM amphibious landing craft in the Pacific. He took part in battles in the Philippines and in the western Pacific and at the final battles at Okinawa.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday March 2, 2004 at 11 A.M. at MELCHER-SOWERS FUNERAL HOME in Piqua, Ohio with Rev. Rob Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery, Piqua, Ohio. Calling hours will be from 4-8 P.M. Monday, March 1, 2004 at the funeral home. Miami Valley Fraternal Order of Police Lodge # 58 will conduct a service Monday at 7:30 P.M. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, The Laurelwood, 3797 Summit Glen Drive, Suite 100, Dayton, OH 45449.

CHARLES A. MAYS, age 82, of Piqua, died Thursday February 26, 2004 at 4:05 A.M. at V. A. Medical Center, Dayton, Ohio. He was born in Piqua, OH to the late Richard C. and Annabelle (Bailey) Mays. He married Mary E. Arnett. She preceded him in death in 1980. After her death, he married Lillie A. Van Kirk in October 1980, in Piqua, OH. She survives.
He is also survived by 4 Sons and Daughters-In-Law: David & Jeanette Mays, Richard & Kathy Mays, Justine & Erma Mays, all of Piqua, OH and Steven & Kathy Mays, Fletcher, OH; 2 Daughters and Sons-In-Law: Pam & Dean Roberts, Sidney, OH, and Robin & David Burton, Troy, OH; 2 Step-Sons: Homer Doyle, Piqua, OH and Tom Doyle, Dayton, OH; 2 Step-Daughters and Step-Son-In-Law: Laura & Wilson Lee, Jr., and Dorothy Martin, both of Piqua, OH; 18 Grandchildren, and 23 Great-Grandchildren. Mr. Mays was preceded in death by 1 son: Rex Mays, 7 brothers and 2 sisters.
He graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1942. He attended Piqua Salvation Army and was a member of the Salvation Army Senior Club. He was also the groundskeeper of Echo Hills Gold Course for the City of Piqua for over 25 years and retired in 1986. Mr. Mays served in the U. S. Air Force as a mechanic.
Graveside services will be held Monday, March 1, 2004, at 11:00 A. M. at Miami Memorial Park, Covington, OH, with Maj. Ronald Starnes officiating. Full military honors will be preformed by the Vets Honor Guard. No calling hours will be held.

EVELYN M. FRANCIS, age 74, of Piqua, died Saturday February 28, 2004 at 8:48 p.m. in her residence. She was born Jan. 14, 1930 in Sidney, Ohio to the late Frank and Ellen (Berger) Chappie. She married Raymond Francis on July 1, 1950 in Piqua, Oh. and he preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2003.
She is also survived by two sons and daughter-in-law: William and Susan Francis of Ft. Loramie, Oh. and Clarence Francis of Piqua, Oh; two daughters and son-in-law: Bertha Ellen Nickson of Piqua, Oh. and Patricia and Bill Jones of Piqua, Oh; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.
Mrs. Francis graduated from Piqua Catholic High School in 1949. She worked for Stolle Corporation for 10 years.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday March 2, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Hill cemetery, Piqua, with Rev. Fr. Thomas Grilliot officiating. No calling hours will be held. Arrangements are being handled by Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home.
