William J. “Pete” Horstman, 70, of Ottoville, died 5:25 am. May 30 at his residence. He was born Nov. 28, 1931 in Ottoville, to William and Flo (Martin) Horstman. On Aug. 29, 1953, he married Sylvia Wittler, who survives in Fort Jennings. Other survivors include a son, Vaughn (Lynne) Horstman of Ottoville; two daughters, Kathy L. Tanner of Bellbrook and Saundra (Bob) Klima of Ottoville; a sister, Jane Stallkamp of Leesburg, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashley Klima. Mr. Horstman was an electrician with Philips Display Components, Ottawa, from 1952 to 1991 and was the former co-owner of Sno-Cone Restaurant in Charloe from 1975 to 1981. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and its Holy Name Society where he had been a past treasurer. In the winter he attended St. Paul Catholic Church in Leesburg, Fla., He was a member of the I.B.E.W., Ohio Longrifle Association, the National Rifle Association and the International Muzzleloaders Association. He enjoyed antiques, including cars, and home brewing. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Rev. Tony Borgia officiating. Funeral services for Luella M. “Dottie” Maag, 87, of Columbus Grove, who died 9:55 a.m. May 29 at Calvary Manor, Glandorf, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove, the Rev. Bernard Kokocinski officiating. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery. She was born April 26, 1915, in Lima to Walter and Sylvia (Rockhill) Joseph. On May 22, 1934, she married Edwin H. Maag, who died Jan. 13, 1973. Survivors include three sons, Thomas and Patrick Maag of Columbus Grove and Michael Maag of Lima; a sister, Lila “Tootie” Lentz of Lima; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Daniel Maag; a twin sister; and two brothers, Charles Lester Joseph and Merle Joseph. Mrs. Maag was a homemaker. Marjorie D. Wollenhaupt, 97, of Van Wert, died 6:25 p.m. May 28 at Lincolnway Nursing Home. She was born Feb. 28, 1905 in Van Wert County, to Henry E. and Emma (Friend) Fackler. On Feb. 19, 1925, she married Christopher Wollenhaupt, who died April 14, 1971. Survivors include a son, Gene (Ellie) Wollenhaupt of Lima; a half-brother, Irvin Fackler of Mansfield; five grandchildren, David Wollenhaupt of Delphos, Tom Wollenhaupt of Connecticut, Darlene Brady of Cincinnati and Susan Brady and Alice Hooks of Lima; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Wollenhaupt retired in 1971 after 15 years at Ahlenius Store in Van Wert. She was a member of the former St. Peter United Church of Christ and a current member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Van Wert, where she had been church organist for 21 years, a member of United Methodist Women and Church Women United and the Friendship Sunday School class. She was a former Pleasant Township trustee, serving for 11 years as the first woman trustee in the state of Ohio and was a member of the Van Wert County Farm Bureau, member and past president of the Van Wert YWCA Board of Directors and a member of the Ohio State and Van Wert County Trustees and Clerks Association. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert, the Rev. Dr. Gale Colvin officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Van Wert. Elva Iota “Odie” Champ, 93, of Spencerville, formerly of Lima, died 1:38 a.m. May 27 at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home, Spencerville. She was born Feb. 27, 1909 near Fort Amanda in Auglaize County, to Albert M. and Delcie R. “Zella” (Ramsey) Adams. On Nov. 6, 1929, she married J. Lewis Champ, who preceded her in death Aug. 19, 1994. Survivors include a son, James W. Champ of Lima; a daughter, Mary Ruth (H. Ray) Roof of Lima; a brother, Glen (Pauline) Adams of Plano, Texas; a sister, Ellen (Lewis) McClanahan of Venedocia; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Gerald William Champ; three brothers, Edgar, Russell and Albert Adams; and four sisters, Pearl Sells, Mary Cleveland, Edna Thrush and infant Velma Adams. Mrs. Champ was a member of the former Christie United Methodist Church near Spencerville and its United Methodist Women and adult Sunday school class. She was a 47-year member of the Ida Rebekah Lodge 391 and the Dorcas Circle of Spencerville and a former member of the Spencerville CB Club. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed playing cards with friends and traveling. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville, the Rev. Thomas E. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She was born May 29, 1909 in Spencerville, to John N. and Helen (Maloney) Mueller. Survivors include a son, John (Helen) Mueller of Delphos; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Cyril and Maurice “Shorty” Mueller; and a sister, Lucille Miller. Ms. Mueller was a caretaker. Thom Dunlavy

Thom Dunlavy, 70, of Fort Wayne, Ind., formerly of North Manchester, Ind., died 8 a.m. May 26 at his residence. He was born Jan. 19, 1932 in Indianapolis, to E.B. and Helen (Delp) Dunlavy. On Dec. 17, 1955 he married Anita Garman, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Shawn Dunlavy of Delphos and Drew (Sheri) Dunlavy of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Reagan Dunlavy of Galesburg, Ill.; a sister, Martha Jane (Dean) Mitchell, of North Webster; and five grandchildren. He was a retired newspaper executive who began his career at his father’s newspaper, The News-Journal, in North Manchester. He later worked at the Connersville News-Examiner, Lafayette Journal-Courier, Toledo Blade and Rockford Star-Register. For several years he was the owner and publisher of the Rising Sun Recorder and Ohio Country News. He was also the co-publisher of The News-Journal in North Manchester. He retired as publisher of the Delphos Herald and executive vice president of a group of nine newspapers owned by Delphos Publications Inc. He served 10 years as vice president of the Delphos Industrial Development Corporation and was a member of the American Legion Post 268 and Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 2919, Delphos. He also served five years on the Barbee Lakes Association. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of the Lutheran Church. He graduated from Central High School and Wittenberg University. He was also a life member of the 56th Fighter Group Association. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Manchester, Pastor Jeffrey L. Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. On Nov. 15, 1933, she married Othmar F. “Ott” Smith, who preceded her in death April 20, 1992. Survivors include two sons, Paul J. (Karen S.) Smith and Kenneth (Karen L.) Smith of Columbus Grove; three daughters, Jeanette (George) Knippen of Ottoville, Dorothy (George) Bonifas of Landeck and Joan (Ray) Moening of Fort Jennings; 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edwin, Alex and Steve Hilvers; and two sisters, Regina Schweller and Loretta Ruen; a son-in-law, Kenneth Kramer; and a great-grandson, Wesley Bonifas. Rex K. Wisher

Rex K. Wisher, 75, of Delphos, died 10:10 a.m. May 27 at his residence. He was born Nov. 5, 1926, in Delphos to Walter and Oma “Zula” (Swartz) Wisher. On Dec. 14, 1951, he married Lois Coombs, who died Dec. 13, 1993. Survivors include two daughters, Julie Wisher and Jody (Michael) Wisher-Slonaker of Delphos; three sons, Stan (Karen) Wisher of Elida, Frank (Terrie) Wisher of Delphos and Max (Toni) Wisher of Middle Point; seven grandchildren, Derek, Todd, Kevin, Holly, Lindsey Wisher and Robbie and Anna Slonaker. He was preceded in death by a brother, Max Wisher. Mr. Wisher retired from West Ohio Gas and co-owned a trenching business for years. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3035, American Legion Post 268 and Delphos Eagles Aerie 471. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the European and Pacific Theater for six years. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed hunting, golfing, sports and his grandchildren. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School. Private military graveside services will be conducted for immediate family only by the Delphos Veterans Council 11 a.m. Thursday at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Arthur Edward “Ed” DeLong, 95, of Delphos, died 4:20 a.m. May 27 at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home, Spencerville. He was born Sept. 4, 1906, in Auglaize County to Russell and Millie Mae (Dotson) DeLong. On June 16, 1928, he married Treva Cretora Phenger, who preceded him in death Oct. 2, 1976. Survivors include a son, Duaine DeLong of Delphos; two daughters, Gloria (Max) Higbie of Delphos and Pat Wagner of Wapakoneta; a sister, Helen Beemer of Sidney; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Thomas E., Harold “Jim,” John Chester “Bill,” Clarence “Winney,” Homer “Pud,” and Roland DeLong; three sisters, Susie Logan, Alta Bruner and Elizabeth Ewing; and a grandchild. Gene DeLong, 53, of Lake Worth, Fla., formerly of Lima, died May 19 at his residence. He was born Nov. 27, 1948, in Lima to Irvin and Naomi DeLong. His father and stepmother, Irvin and Shirley DeLong survive in Delphos. He married Brenda Fuller, who survives in Lake Worth. Margaret E. Pierce, 77, of Convoy, died 8:42 a.m. May 27 at her residence. She was born Jan. 4, 1925 in Van Wert County, to Soren H. and Mabel (Waltz) Schwartz. On June 12, 1944, she married Edwin J. Pierce, who survives in Convoy. Other survivors include a son, David J. (Karen) Pierce of Wakarusa, Ind.; two daughters, Carolyn Sue (Max) Priddy of Ohio City and Nancy (Mike) Sheets of Van Wert; a brother, Richard (Ruth) Schwartz of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Eugene Walterick, 88, of Delphos, died 8:45 p.m. May 25 at Vancrest Nursing Home, Delphos. He was born Aug. 4, 1913, in Delphos to Francis L. and Lucy A. (Schaffer) Walterick. He married Ruth (Johnson) Walterick, who died in 1992. Survivors include friends and caregivers Larry Joseph and Beth Skym. Mr. Walterick was preceded in death a brother, Robert Walterick; and a sister, Mary L. Suever. He worked at Westinghouse, Lima, for 40 years before retiring. Survivors include two sons, Jack (Sue) Trentman of Newark and Tom (Alice) Trentman of Westfield, Ind.; a daughter Bette (Elzie) Prater of Lima; a sister, Helen Crow of Toledo; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Gilbert Trentman; and two sisters, Lucy and Elinore Trentman. Mr. Trentman was a retired carpenter. On Dec. 5, 1928, she married Richard O. Cowles, who preceded her in death in September 1984. Survivors include a son, Thomas R. (Lenore) Cowles of Inverness, Fla.; a daughter, Carolyn (Bob) Snider of Elida; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David Clark Cowles; five sisters, Nina May Guyer, Wealthy April Grady, Nora Idessa Revercomb, Gladys Helen Newman and Gertrude Mary Hulvey; and two brothers, Harold Smith Dedrick and Charles Ralph Dedrick. Mrs. Cowles had been a registered nurse. She was a 1928 graduate of Old City Hospital, Lima, as a nurse. She was a 50-year member of the Pythian Sister Lodge and Memorial Hospital Alumni Association. Wilfred L. “Bill” Warnement, 86, of rural Defiance, died 2:30 a.m. today at Lima Convalescent Center. He was born March 22, 1916 in Kalida, to George and Agnes (Deitrick) Warnement. In 1946, he married Lucille Smith, who died Dec. 16, 1999. Survivors include two sisters, Martha (Delbert) Carder of Delphos and Mary Sanders of Lima; a brother Donald (June) Warnement of Kalida; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Emma Hansen and Lucille Gilgenbaugh; and five brothers, Edmund, Albert, Richard, Eugene and John Warnement. Mr. Warnement retired from General Motors Central Foundry, Defiance, after 40 years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Defiance, the VFW Post 3360, life member of the Defiance Eagles and the Defiance DAV, Defiance Elks, the Defiance Am. Vets and the Jewel American Legion. He was staff sergeant in the Army serving during World War II in the infantry in the South Pacific. He was awarded a Bronze Star for serving during the Northern Solomons Campaign. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, 1753 S. Clinton St., Defiance. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens Cemetery, Defiance County. On Jan. 17, 1939, she married Carl W. Feabsy, who died Nov. 28, 1996. Survivors include a son, David L. Mary Charlotte Samsal, 74, of Pandora, died 8 a.m. May 22 in Winterhaven, Fla. She was born May 6, 1928, in Lima to J. Kirt and Emma B. (Williams) Everett. On Dec. 18, 1947, she married Gerand K. “Shorty” Samsal, who preceded her in death Aug. 23, 1992. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth (Doris) Samsal of Wapakoneta and Keith (Linda) Samsal of Pandora; two daughters, Karen (Mark) Shoemaker of Pandora and Kathy (David) Fenstermaker of Leipsic; special friend and companion, Roger Mayberry of Columbus Grove; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Edmund “Bud” Everett. Mrs. Samsal was a homemaker and had worked at Hilty Memorial Home, Pandora, for 15 years, retiring in 2000. She was a member of Pandora United Methodist Church and had been a member of the area ladies pinochle club. She was a 1946 graduate of Columbus Grove High School. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery. He was born May 11, 1934, in Lima to J. Donald and Dorothy A. (Ferry) Bourk. On May 12, 1956, he married Gloria L. “Sadie” Kill, who survives in Lima. Other survivors include three sons, Shawn M. (Kimberly) Bourk and Darby J. Bourk of Columbus and Kevin P. (Jeannie) Bourk of Lima; four daughters, Julie A. (Brian) Duffy, Kathryn “Kasey” C. (Jesse) Rumer and Kelly J. (Ric) Stolly of Lima and Shannon M. (Terry) Harvill of Chicago; two brothers, James E. (Judie) Bourk and Joseph P. Bourk of Lima; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, John D. Bourk; and a sister, Dorothy “Dottie” Johnson. Mr. Bourk retired from Teledyne Ohio Steel in 1985 after 30 years. He was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church, Lima, where he was past president of the St. Gerard Parish Council, past treasurer of the its Holy Name Society and had coached junior high football and boys and girls basketball at St. Gerard School. He had also taught boys and girls basketball at St. Rose. He was also a member of UAW Local 975, where he had been a past president, was past treasurer of the Knights of Columbus, where he was a fourth-degree member, was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 370, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54, was past treasurer of the Lima CYO and ran sports programs in Lima, was adviser of Junior Achievement, was a charter member of L.C.C. Athletic Projects, volunteered as a cook at St. Gerard functions. He was a 1952 graduate of St. Rose High School and attended Lamar College in Lamar, Colo., and the University of Dayton. Richard A. Heidenescher, 79, of Delphos, died 1:05 p.m. May 19 at his residence. He was born Aug. 21, 1922 in Delphos to John and Frances (Wieging) Heidenescher. On May 4, 1946 he married Alice L. Moorman, who survives in Delphos. Other survivors include a son, Richard L. (Karen) Heidenescher of St. Charles, Ill.; a daughter, Sue Ann Toll of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Arthur (Bernie) Heidenescher of Lima and Clarence (Velma) Heidenescher of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two sisters, Rita Klinger and Rosie Murray of Delphos; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Heidenescher; and a sister, Mary Heidenescher. Mr. Heidenescher was an inspector at Westinghouse Electric for 43 years, retiring in 1984. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II as staff sergeant for 28 months in a supply department in England. C. Curtis Couch, 80, of Van Wert, died 7:53 .m. May 17 at Vancrest Health Care Center. He was born Sept. 27, 1921, in Henry County to David and Maud (Johnson) Couch. On April 2, 1942, he married Ida Mae Anderson, who survives in Van Wert. Survivors also include three sons, Ron Couch of Zanesville, James (Margie) Couch of Pickerington and Eric (Diane) Couch of Van Wert; a brother, Andrew Couch of Mount Dora, Fla.; a sister, Doris Gene Hoffman of Malinta; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Violet Hahn. Mr. Couch had been co-owner of Couch’s Inc., in Van Wert, had owned an appliance and bottled gas business in Bryan and spent 15 years as district sales manager for Nationwide Insurance in Bryan, Toledo and Van Wert. In 1971 he and his wife began Couch’s Inc. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Van Wert, the Van Wert American Legion, VFW, First Armored Division Association, where he served as past president, all bodies of the Masonic Lodge, 32nd degree Mason, Zenobia Shriner, Bryan Eastern Star, and past president of the Bryan Lions Club. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for five years in African ad Anzio Campaigns earning three bronze stars. He was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Van Wert to Blanchard and Chloa A. (Taylor) East. On Oct. 8, 1966, he married Barbara Grace Holmes, who survives in Van Wert. Mr. East was a Van Wert County Sheriff’s Deputy for 16 years and retired as security guard for General Electric in Decatur, Ind. Mass of Christian burial for Charles J. “Charlie” Venturella, 85, of Lima, who died 8:50 a.m. May 16 at Lima Manor Nursing Home, will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Lima, the Rev. William J. Rose officiating. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima, with military graveside services conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275, Lima. He was born Feb. 24, 1917, in Chicago Heights, Ill., to Dominic and Rosaria (Farace) Venturella. On Jan. 26, 1946, he married Jennie P. Calderone, who survives in Lima. Other survivors include a son, Don (Linda) Venturella of Lima; a daughter, Rosanne Venturella; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Anthony “Tony” Venturella; two brothers, Nicholas Rondella and Joseph “Lefty” Venturella; and three sisters, Liboria Venturella, Lena Capretta and Lillian Rugerri. Mr. Venturella was owner and operator of Charlie’s Restaurant in Lima and was a restaurateur for over 60 years. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Elks Lodge 54, American Legion Post 96, and VFW Post 1275. He served in the Army during World War II. Friends may call 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima, where a parish wake will be 8 p.m. Preferred memorials are to Lima Central Catholic Scholarship Fund or St. Charles Parish.
