Carol Sue 'Suzie' Flanagan

Carol Sue 'Suzie' Flanagan, 64, of Lima, died at 9:10 a.m. Saturday at her residence. She was born June 4, 1940 in Toledo, to Elvin 'Bud' Burke and Selma 'Sally' Fiester, who survive in Wapakoneta. On November 28, 1956 she married J. Larry Flanagan, who died Dec. 5, 1996. Other survivors include three daughters, Kelly K. Mullins of Cridersville, Shelly S. (Danny) McPheron of Cridersville and Darla Dee Watt of Fort Shawnee; a brother, Jerry 'Butch' (Kay) Fiester of Wapakoneta; three sisters, Judy (Tony) Ball of St. Marys, Cathy (Gene) Mason of Cridersville and Sally (Doug) Ruen of Lima; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Flanagan was a homemaker and had been a cafeteria worker for the Lima City Schools. She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church and American Legion Post 96 Auxiliary. She attended Shekinah Temple in St. Marys. A funeral Mass was at 11 a.m. today at St. Charles Church, the Rev. Steve Blum and Pastor Judy Ball officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemani Cemetery. Helen F. Valentine, 89, of Lima, formerly of Delphos, died at 9:40 a.m. Monday at her residence. She was born Nov. 2, 1914, in Delphos, to Charles G. and Philomena (Fortener) Steinle Sr. In 1937, she married Fred Mersman, who died in 1941. She then married Arthur 'Art' Imber in 1944. He died in 1948. She later married William Valentine in 1965, who died in 1985. Survivors include two children, Jack (Phyllis) Imber of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Barb Imber of Lima; and a granddaughter, Sharon Imber of Plano, Texas. She was preceded in death by siblings Elizabeth Imber, Elsie Williams and Charles Steinle Jr.; and a grandson, John Imber Jr. Mrs. Valentine was an office nurse for Dr. Howard Illig in Delphos for 15 years and then was a nurse at St. Rita's Medical Center for 15 years and was known as 'Big Red.' She was a graduate of St. Rita's Nursing School and a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Her mother survives in Middle Point. Other survivors include two daughters, Precious Meinerding of St. Marys and Ashley Baker of Paulding; five sisters, Kathleen (Tom) Hawk of Brownsburg, Ind., Helen (Dick) Richardson of Delphos, Jessie (Danny) Chesbro and Jilda Yoh of Van Wert and Evelyn (Don) Mercer of Antwerp; seven brothers, William (Lorna) Jewell of Grover Hill, Evert (Sol) Jewell of Wayahacite, Texas, Chuck Searfoss, Edward P. Knuth and William F. Knuth of Middle Point, George (Toni) Searfoss of Haviland and Ernest A. (Kathy) Jewell of Defiance; two grandchildren, Dylan Meinerding and Ashtin Rowe; and her significant other, William Ball of Van Wert. She was preceded in death by a sister, Darlene L. Karen Louise Hunsinger, 54, of Defiance, died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Harborside Healthcare Center, Defiance. She was born Aug. 5, 1950 in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Morton and Ruth Wagner. Her parents survive in Odessa, Fla. On April 22, 1973 she married Pastor Keith A Hunsinger, who survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Kristin Lisette Hunsinger of Defiance; two brothers, Dennis Johnson of Paw Paw, Mich., and Daryl Johnson of Portage, Mich.; and two sisters, Kay L. Sowles of Oshtemo, Mich., and Karel Johnson of Atlanta. She was an independent living specialist. She was formerly employed by The Ability Center, Defiance, and Key Bank, Defiance. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Defiance Post Polio Support Group, and a former member of the board of trustees of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C. Paul J. Schroeder, 86, of Leipsic, died at 3 p.m. Thursday at his residence. He was born Sept. 7, 1917 in Leipsic, to Charles and Amelia (Kuhlman) Schroeder. On May 1, 1940, he married Lucille Otto. She survives in Leipsic. Survivors also include six daughters, Dorothy (Tom) Okuley of New Bavaria, Rita (Leo) Schroeder and Janet Schnipke of New Cleveland, Rosemary (Gary) Brown and JoAnn (Allan) Brown of Miller City and Kathy (Dick) Beining of Ottoville; a brother, Thaddeus (Florence) Schroeder of Leipsic; two sisters, Anna Marie (Al) Warnecke of Kalida and Lou Ann Hermiller of Ottawa; 29 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Marcellus, Albert and James Schroeder; four sisters, Lucille Aelker, Alice Otto, Florence Otto and Mary Jane Rieman; and a son-in-law, Frank Schnipke. Mr. Schroeder was a retired dairy farmer. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Leipsic, and the Ottawa Knights of Columbus Council 1757 and Eagles Aerie 2234. He enjoyed sharing time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also played cards and bingo, took bus trips and just enjoyed being on the farm. Marjorie T. Arnold, 94, of Lima, formerly of Delphos, died at 6:20 a.m. Thursday at Lima Manor Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 10, 1909 in Campbellsville, Ky., to John C. and Ellen Bumgartner Eubank. On May 23, 1941 she married William H. VanPelt, who died May 17, 1971. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Bayliff Funeral Home, Cridersville, the Rev. Gary Homan officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Edward E. Schrader

Edward E. Schrader, 83, of Delphos, died at 7 p.m. Tuesday at his residence. He was born May 2, 1921 in New Haven, Ind., to Edward J. and Estella (Martin) Schrader. On Aug. 4, 1945 he married Wilma (Arnold) Schrader, who survives in Delphos. Survivors include six children, Julie Schrader of Coos Bay, Oregon, Sue (Bob) Metcalf of Delphos, Linda (hop) McClure-Hammons, John Schrader and Jim (Rene) Schrader of Ottoville, GiGi (Larry) Dodd of Central Point, Oregon; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers and a sister. Schrader retired from Fruehauf Corp. after 40 years. He was a life member of the Ottoville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3740 and the American Legion Post 0330, New Haven, 767 Squadron 461st Bombardment Group (H) Inc. and St. John the Baptist in New Haven. He was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II, serving in the Italy Theater and was very proud of his accomplishments during his service. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, watching and feeding squirrels, spending time with his family and his World War II memorabilia. He especially enjoyed his dog, Bitsy. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. (Indiana time) Saturday at St. John the Baptist Church, New Haven, the Rev. Paul McCarthy officiating. Connie M. Hale, 44, of Naples Fla., formerly of Delphos, died Aug. 10. She was born Nov. 13, 1959, to George and Bonnie Corzine Sr. Her mother, Bonnie (Robert) VanMeter, survives in Delphos. In August 1978, she married Thomas Grover Hale. Survivors include four children, Thomas (Brenda) Hale III, Jason Joseph, Amber Joseph and Trinidi (Richard) Hale Carroll Jr.; two brothers, George (Jean) Corzine Jr. and J. Brent VanMeter; two sisters, Cynthia (Bill) Corzine Smith and Dawn Michele (Ron) Cohurn; and five grandchildren, Kailey, Colton and Christopher Hale and Amber and Justin Carroll. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Rodney Mark Corzine; her maternal grandparents, Robert Boyd and Mildred Irean (Davis) Boyd; and paternal grandparents Jake and Ethel Corzine. Genevieve L. Knerr, 89, of Decatur, Ind., formerly of Pleasant Lake, Ind., died Aug. 13 at Adams County Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 29, 1915 in Putnam County, to John A. and Almira O. (Bair) Troyer. On Dec. 22, 1937, she married Frederick D. Knerr, who died June 30, 1991. Survivors include two daughters, Harriet (Charles) Sterrett of Frostburg, Md., and Linda (Rene) Brown of Decatur; a sister, Mazie Fruchey of Reading, Mich.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, six sisters and a foster sister. Mrs. Knerr was a homemaker and member of Hudson United Brethren Church. Peter J. Baerveldt
Peter J. Baerveldt, 61, died Aug. 3 [2004] in Sarasota, Fla. He was married to Lolly (Brandehoff) Baerveldt, formerly of Delphos. Lolly is the daughter of Carolyn Brandehoff and the late Romus Brandehoff. The Baerveldts owned China Trade since 1986. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He is also survived by his parents, Peter and Wanda Baerveldt of Sarasota; and two sisters, Marilyn Patton and Joy Baerveldt of Sarasota. Funeral services were Aug. 6 in Sarasota.

Lucia A. Elwer

Lucia A. 'Lucy' Elwer, 45, of Delphos, died at 4:12 p.m. Wednesday at St. Rita's Medical Center. She was born Jan. 27, 1959 in Lima, to William J. and Lucille (Omler) Becker. Her mother survives in Delphos. On July 2, 1983, she married David Elwer, who also survives in Delphos. Other survivors include a daughter, Natalie Elwer of Delphos; and four brothers, John, Tom, Joe and Ed Becker. Mrs. Elwer owned and operated Elwer Boarding Kennels from 1987 to 2002 and co-owned Elwer Fence. She was also a dog groomer for several years. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the American Fence Association and was a former member of the American Boarding Association. She was a 1977 graduate of Jefferson High School. She was an avid garden pond enthusiast and local dirt track fan. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church, the Rev. Thomas Gorman officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Jack E. Cochensparger, 81, of Delphos, died at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday at St. Rita's Medical Center. He was born June 11, 1923, in Lima, to Dell and Naomi (Simpson) Cochensparger. On Aug. 17, 1945, he married Betty (Holmes) Cochensparger, who survives. Other survivors include a son, Jeffrey (Crystal) Cochensparger of Delphos; a daughter, Mary Jo (Richard) Behrns of Delphos, and a granddaughter, Emily Liggett. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sarah Liggett. Cochensparger retired as a rural mail carrier with the Delphos Post Office after 33 years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Delphos, American Legion Post 268, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3035, National Rural Letter Carrier Association, Walnut Grove Cemetery board and Hope Masonic Lodge 214. He enjoyed stamp collecting. He served in the Army as a Chief Warrant Officer in World War II. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Harter and Son Memorial Chapel, the Rev. David Howell officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery at a later date. On Aug. 25, 1949 he married Dorothy Steffan, who also died Tuesday. Survivors include a daughter, Louise (fianc' Jan Mitchell) Morman of West Chester, NY; and five sisters, Martha Ricker, Hilda Stechschulte, Frances Schroeder and Gertrude Dreup of Delphos, and Rita Knott of Fort Jennings. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Norbert, Edwin and James Morman; and three sisters, Bertha, Bernadette and Mary Morman. On Aug. 25, 1949 she married Elmer Morman, who also died Tuesday. Survivors include a daughter, Louise (fianc' Jan Mitchell) Morman of West Chester, NY; two brothers, Robert Steffan of Leipsic, and Norbert (Rita) Steffan of Ottawa; and a sister, Florence 'Bede' (Eugene 'Zeke') Klausing of Leipsic. She was co-manager of the family farm and was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and its Altar Rosary Society. She was a founding member of St. Michael's Choir. On Oct. 12, 1937, he married Kathleen Julia Moody, who died in 1991. Survivors include a son, Gregory (Marti) Ilderton of Ohio City; a daughter, Tara Lee Bedel of Cincinnati; a sister, Eileen McKinley of Mount Sterling; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbert Ilderton; and two sisters, Eva Yavalak and Alice Ilderton. Mr. Ilderton was a long-time employee of Texas Eastern Transmission Corp. On June 26, 1935, she married Albert F. Ellerbrock, who died Oct. 27, 1982. Survivors include a son, Kenneth (Joan) Ellerbrock of Glandorf; a son-in-law, Richard Shultz of Van Wert; two sisters, Marcile (Norman) Schmitz of Glandorf and Irma Grismore of Delphos; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Shultz; two brothers, S. Clarence and Virgil Elwer; and three sisters, Alfreda Elwer, Martha Solberg and Pauline Rabe. She married Arnold Dunlap, who is deceased. Survivors include two sons, William (Maggie) Lucas of Tuscon, Ariz., and Robert (Bunny) Lucas of Dickson, Tenn.; a daughter, Rebecca (Greg) Jenkins of Van Wert; three sisters, Alice (James) Hodgson and Dorothy Renner of Delphos, and Audrey (Walter) Shindeldecker of Findlay; a brother, Harold (Mary) Stuttler of Delphos; 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Oscar Stuttler; a sister, Marie Bayman and two grandchildren. Dunlap was a homemaker. She was born Oct. 14, 1907 in Allen County, to Willard and Ethel (Sours) Johnson. She married Ellis R. Sherrick, who preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, Lendell (Martha J.) Sherrick of Phoenix; a brother, Marvin 'Jim' (Wynoma) Johnson of Lindale, Texas; daughters-in-law, Janice and Eileen Sherrick; 16 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchilren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Survivors include four sons, Tom (Peg) Niese of Miller City, Paul (Cindy) Niese of Leipsic and Daniel (Ginny) Niese and Dale (Sherri) Niese of New Cleveland; eight daughters, Marilyn (Lawrence) Recker of New Cleveland, Elaine Niese, Dot (Mike) Verhoff and Barbara Niese of Kalida, Joan Niese of Ottawa, Daisy (Larry) Schroeder and Betty Niese of New Bavaria and Robyn (Mike) Kohls of Columbus Grove; 30 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Niese was a homemaker. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, New Cleveland, and its Altar Rosary Society and Catholic Ladies of Columbia. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, the Rev. Robert DeSloover officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. today and from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Love Funeral Home, Ottawa, where a scripture service will be at 7:15 p.m. today and a CL of C/Altar Rosary Society service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Preferred memorials are to the American Diabetes Association or Brookhill Center and Workshop.

Sue Hickey

Sue Hickey, 47, of Delphos, died at 4:27 p.m. Friday at her residence. She was born April 11, 1957, in Lima, to William and Agnes (Wehri) Ulm. Her father preceded her in death and her mother survives in Delphos. On Aug. 27, 1977, she married Dennis R. Hickey, who survives. Survivors also include two children: Doug Hickey of Cincinnati; and Kristen (Nate Killion) Hickey of Kettering; five siblings, Dorothy 'Dort' (Carl) Kohorst and Robert (Kathy) Ulm of Delphos, Barbara Anderson of Seattle, Nancy (Joe) Grote of Kalida and Laurie Ulm of Findlay. Mrs. Hickey was a dental assistant for Dr. Nicholas Schmit in Delphos. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and its adult choir. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11 a.m., on Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos, the Rev. Thomas Gorman officiating. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. today at the Kolkmeyer-Helmkamp-Orians Funeral Home, where a parish wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's High School Choir, Sisters of Notre Dame or St. Rita's Hospice.
