Layton H. Lipps
WAYNE TOWNSHIP - Layton H. Lipps, 90, of Creek Road, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at St. Paul Homes Health Center in Greenville, Pa. He was born July 25, 1912, in Dorset, the son of John A. and Daisy (Hayslett) Lipps. A lifetime Ashtabula County resident, Mr. Lipps owned and operated his own dairy farm in Wayne Township for more than 40 years. He also drove a school bus for more than 14 years, for the former Wayne School. He was a faithful member of the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church for many years, serving as an usher. He was also a longtime member of the Ashtabula County Farm Bureau. He married his first wife, Glenna D. (Fetters), on Sept. 2, 1939. She died Dec. 30, 1976. He married his second wife, Inez A. (Garwood), on Aug. 23, 1977. She died Feb. 19, 1988. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Lewis, Loid, Lester and Leonard; and two grandchildren. Survivors include three sons, LeRoy L., and L. Robert, both of Wayne Township, and Leslie H., of Ashtabula; a daughter, Nola M. Vlock, of Sheffield Township; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a longtime friend, Ruth Tuttle of Wayne Township. Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover, with The Rev. Don C. Sillaman Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Hayes Cemetery. Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church, 3353 U.S. 6, Andover, 44003.

David M. Musial
MADISON - David M. Musial, 41, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, in Madison Township. Mr. Musial was born Feb. 22, 1961, in Madison, the son of Theodore F. and Helen (Janakovich) Musial. A 1979 graduate of Madison High School, he worked as a subcontractor for Yanish Construction Co. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved life, family members said. Survivors include his father, of Madison; a sister, Mary Ann Malec of Madison; and a brother, Stan Musial of Thompson. He was preceded in death by his mother. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church, 2846 Hubbard Road, Madison, with The Rev. Luigi Miola officiating. Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Potti Funeral Home, 2726 Hubbard Road, Madison. Burial will be in Madison Memorial Cemetery.

James A. Novak
MADISON - James Anthony Novak, 70, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at Lake West Hospital in Willoughby. He was born Jan. 20, 1932, in Cleveland, the son of Mildred (Koeth) and Joseph Novak. He worked as a draftsman at Caterpillar. Mr. Novak collected numerous lighthouses and enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Dietrich and Audra Stolpa, both of Madison; and two grandchildren, A.J. Dietrich and Konrad Stolpa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra (Urusko) in 1998, whom he married May 11, 1963, in Cleveland. Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2846 Hubbard Road, Madison, with the Rev. Luigi Miola officiating. Interment will be in North Madison Cemetery. Charlton C. Warring
ASHTABULA - Charlton C. Warring, 85, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at Austinburg Rehabilitation Center. He was born Sept. 13, 1916, in Harpersfield, the son of John and Jessie (Henderson) Warring. He married Agnes L. Bailey on Nov. 30, 1946. Mr. Warring served as a chief engineer in the Merchant Marines during World War II. During this time, he enjoyed his extensive travels around the world. When he returned home, he married and helped raise his two daughters. He was employed as a machinist by Reliance Electric until his retirement. He enjoyed gardening, maintaining his carefully tended yard and feeding the birds. He also held a civilian pilot's license. Survivors include his wife; daughters Marlene Lehtinen of Park City, Utah, and Jean Turmala of Mesa, Ariz.; and a brother, Berchard of Geneva. He was preceded in death by his parents, of Geneva; and a brother, Gerald of Ashtabula. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with The Rev. Will Stackhouse of Perry Christian Church officiating. Interment will be in Ridgeview Cemetery. At the family's request, no calling hours will be observed. Naoma J. Calaway
ASHTABULA- Naoma June Calaway, 68, of Ohio Avenue, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at the Cleveland Clinic. She was born Aug. 4, 1934, in Alma, W.Va., to Thomas and Lillian G. (Spencer) Tennant. She had been an Ashtabula resident since 1945. Mrs. Calaway was employed as a workshop instructor for Ashcraft. Mrs. Calaway was a family-oriented and artistic mother. She enjoyed her grandchildren, roses, being involved in the community, sewing, floral arranging and baking. Survivors include two daughters, Jo Anne Enos and Jennifer J. Nappi, both of Ashtabula; two sons, Thomas J. of Ashtabula, and Steven W. of Jefferson; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel, Brandy, Steven, Katee, Jillian, Alex, Taiylor and Jerry Lee; two brothers, Lawrence B. Tennant of Andover, and William D. Tennant of Ashtabula; and two sisters, Frances Wilson and Sandra Leonard, both of Ashtabula. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur J. Calaway, whom she married Sept. 19, 1953; her parents; and a granddaughter, Connie J. Enos, in infancy. Service is 11 a.m. Thursday at Zaback-Czup Funeral Home, 500 Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Officiating will be the Rev. Joyce Shellhammer, lay pastor of Harris Memorial Presbyterian Church. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Alfred C. Hogan Sr.
GENEVA - Alfred Carl Hogan Sr., 77, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at his home. Mr. Hogan was born June 4, 1925, in Ashtabula, the son of Carl H. Hogan and Della (Terpening) Hogan Blakeslee. After attending Geneva High School, he served during World War II with the U.S. Navy. He went to electrical school for four years and was a member of the IBEW Local 762-673 for 45 years. He retired in 1987. His hobbies included golf, tennis, traveling to Navy reunions, and working part time at a flower shop. He was a member of the United Church and a former member of the church. He served as moderator, trustee and deacon of the church for several years and a former member of the Atmos Class. He also was a member of the American Legion George Call Post 124 of Geneva, serving as its president for a time. In addition, he was a 35-year member of the Geneva Lions Club, serving also as president of that organization for a time. Survivors include his wife, Mildred L. (Millie) (Thompson), whom he married June 4, 1947; a daughter, Terry Zoller of Wyoming, Ohio; three sons, Alfred Jr. of Concord, Michael A. of Williamsfield Township, and Gary A. of Geneva; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Bettie Merriam of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a brother, Paul of Ashtabula. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Don Blakeslee; and a half brother, Fred Henry. Service is 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Church, 75 S. Broadway, Geneva, with the Rev. Bob Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Eastwood St., Geneva. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Donald E. Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman St., Geneva. Edna Mae C. Melugin
PRYOR, Okla.- Edna Mae Campbell Melugin, 95, of Pryor, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002. She was born Oct. 18, 1906, in the New Canaan Community southeast of Pryor Indian Territory. For the past 59 years, she lived at her farm west of Pryor. Mrs. Melugin attended Pryor High School until 1925. She was a farmer-stockwoman and entrepreneur, working part time many years, and a mother and homemaker. From the 1960s to the mid-1980s, she served as a judge for all the elections held in the Osage School community. She volunteered for many years at the Pryor Rescue Mission; belonged to a quilting club, which donated proceeds from quilt sales to local charities; and was a member of the Mayes County Home Extension Club. She also enjoyed gardening. Survivors include one son, Duane of Pryor; three daughters, Juanita Erickson of Ashtabula, and Beverly and Maj-Brit Melugin, both of Lafayette, Calif.; a brother, Jack Campbell of Pryor; six grandchildren, Diana Hutter of Augusta, Kan., Denise Swift of Madras, Ore., Robert Melugin and Leigh Melugin-Johnson of Pryor, Aaron Wiseman of Anchorage, Alaska, and Erin Nichols of Santa Barbara, Calif.; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Willie M. (Bill) Melugin, in 1994; a son, Donald; and one grandson, Brooks. Funeral services took place Monday at Pleasant View Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerold Pilant officiating. Burial will be today at Graham Memorial Cemetery. Mary O. Palmer
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP- Mary O. Palmer, 72, of Ninevah Road, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at home. She was born Aug. 27, 1930, in Ashtabula, the daughter of William and Bessie (Gilbert) Jeffers. Mrs. Palmer was a 1947 graduate of Ashtabula High School. She was employed as township clerk for Saybrook Township, from 1988 until retiring in 1995. She also served as clerk on the Saybrook Township Park Board and was active on the Saybrook Building Committee for the township office. Mrs. Palmer was a member of Saybrook United Methodist Church, where she served as lay delegate to annual conference. Mrs. Palmer was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 943, where she served as president in 1959, and she was 7th District president in 1961. She was a member of Saybrook Grange; Saybrook PTO, where she served as secretary and treasurer; the Columbus Junior High School PTA; Harbor High athletic booster; Harbor High music boosters; Ashtabula County Alzheimer's Support Group; and she served on the Ashtabula High School alumni committee for 1947. Survivors include two sons, Barry R. Palmer of Saybrook Township, William P. Palmer of Painesville; a daughter, Peggy Palmer of Saybrook Township; a grandson, Jacob Palmer; and two brothers, James Shew of Philadelphia, and Michael Sullivan of Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Palmer, in 1993; and stepmothers Margaret Jeffers and Garnet Shew. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Saybrook United Methodist Church, 7900 Depot Road, Saybrook, with the Rev. Donna VanTrees officiating. Calling hours will be Wednesday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Burial will be in Saybrook Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Support Group of Ashtabula County.

Richard R. Sasala
DORSET TOWNSHIP - Richard R. Sasala, 71, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at his home. Mr. Sasala was born March 22, 1931, in Cleveland, the son of Steve and Rosa Sasala. A former 16-year employee of the Home Juice Co., in Cleveland, as a home delivery and sales representative, Mr. Sasala had lived in Dorset since 1993. He also worked for Auto Parts Unlimited in Cleveland for 10 years, as a sales clerk. He was in the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Andover. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting and camping. Survivors include his wife, Barbara M. (Blaha), whom he married July 2, 1955; two sons, Richard S. Sasala of Wellington, and Ronald J. Sasala of Pierpont; a daughter, Linda J. Ottenweller, also of Wellington; a brother, Joseph Sasala of Brook Park; a sister, Rose Coleman of Parma; nine grandchildren, Ricky Sasala, Andy Sasala, Joe Sasala, John Sasala, Jeff Sasala, Joe Kraley, Jenny Sasala, Kelly Ottenweller and Cecelia Hopson; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Nick, Steve and Sam Sasala; and a sister, Mary Heym. Service is 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 481 S. Main St., Andover, with the Rev. Larry Frient officiating. Burial is 2 p.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brook Park. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover. Gladys J. McCoy
ASHTABULA - Gladys J. McCoy, 82, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. She was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Warrington, Lancashire, England, the daughter of John and Emily (Tickle) Jackson. She attended on all-girls school, was a girl guide, became an accomplished seamstress and a munitions worker during World War II. She married Harold J. McCoy in 1945 and came to the U.S. as a war bride in 1947. Mrs. McCoy, a homemaker, was active in the PTA and Girl Scouts and regularly met with a circle of English women friends. In the 70s, she regularly used a CB. She used the name Quality Street over the CB and was known for her British accent and calling everyone Luv. She loved to read and also enjoyed sewing, knitting, baking, camping and traveling. She made several trips abroad but was especially fond of visiting Niagara Falls. Survivors include two daughters, Carole Wisnyai of Ashtabula and Marylyn Jenks of Bremerton, Wash.; two grandchildren, John Wisnyai II and Tracy Jenks Strong; and two great grandchildren, Ashley Wisnyai and Aydan Strong. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Service is 6 p.m. Monday, at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula. Barbara Johnson, Rector of St. Peters Episcopal Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, North Kingsville. Callings hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, before the service at the funeral home.

Almeta E. Craft
ASHTABULA - Almeta Ella Craft, 75, of West 41st Street, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at her daughter's home in Louisville. She was born Oct. 28, 1927 in Geneva, the daughter of George and Nellie Prough and had been an area resident most of her life. She attended the First Assembly of God Church and was devoted to her family. Survivors include two daughters; Dianna Jo Viall of Baytown, Texas and Kathleen Shepherd of Louisville; one son, Paul Craft of Ashtabula; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Bert A. Craft, on Sept. 30, 2000. Service is 1 p.m. Monday, at the Zaback-Czup Funeral Home, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula. The Rev. Brian Wright, assistant pastor of First Assembly of God Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, North Kingsville. Calling hour is noon Monday, before the service at the funeral home.

Betty M. McKean
ASHTABULA - Betty M. McKean, 86, of Lake Avenue, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Ashtabula County Medical Center. She was born Sept. 10, 1916 in Avon, N.Y., the daughter of Richard and Mary (Cawley) Carter. She had been a resident of Ashtabula since 1970. She previously lived in Jefferson and enjoyed making crafts and sewing. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Palmer of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, William R. Steward of Louisiana; a stepdaughter, Beverly Balcom of Crystal River, Fla.; a stepson, Howard E. McKean of Louisville; 20 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard J. in 1971; a stepbrother, LeRoy Carter; a daughter, Pearl who was stillborn; a stepdaughter, Betty Barrel; a grandson, Mark Steward; and two great-grandsons. There will be no service or calling hours. Cremation will take place at the Care Group Cremation Center in Jefferson. Burial of ashes will take place at the Evergreen Cemetery in Pierpont at a later date. The Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, is handling arrangements.

Howard W. Rankin
BURTON TOWNSHIP - Howard W. Rankin, 73, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at University Hospitals in Cleveland. He was born April 3, 1929 in Wesleyville, Pa., the son of Howard L. and Elizabeth A. (Hutchison) Rankin. Mr. Rankin married Margaret Schneider in Greentown Dec. 23, 1950. He was the owner and operator of the Todd and Associated Insurance Agency in Beachwood for 40 years, retiring n 1998. Mr. Rankin wa a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an active member of Village Lodge #274, F.&A.M where he was a two time past master, Clover Chapter #201 and Order of Eastern Star. He was also a member of Chapter #46 Royal Arch Masons, Council #104 Royal and Select Masons, Eagle Commandery #29 Knights Templar and the Eagle Shrine Club, all of Painesville. Mr. Rankin was also a member in the Scottish Rite, Valley of Cleveland, Al Koran Shrine and the Al Koran Mariners Club, all of Cleveland. He was a past district education officer for the 25th Masonic District in Ohio and a member of the Allied Masonic Degrees. Mr. Rankin was also an active member of American Legion Post #459 in Burton and the U.S. Power Squadron. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kathleen E. Dumler of Middlefield and Margaret S. Harrington of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Howard W., Jr. of Monticello, Ky.; a sister, Allene Martinez of Dagsboro, Del.; a brother, Perry L. of Erie, Pa.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A masonic service is 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon. The officers and brethren of Village Lodge #274 will officiate. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Gertrude S. Franko
MENTOR - Gertrude S. Franko, 76, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002. She was born Feb. 6, 1926, in Mentor, the daughter of Sigurd and Signette (Simonsen) Stromme. Mrs. Franko was a lifetime area resident, a bookkeeper for the Mentor K-Mart from 1973 to 1978 and a librarian for St. Mary and St. Gabriel schools. She was a member of the Painesville Y.M.C.A. and the Painesville Senior Center. Survivors include her husband, David A. Franko, whom she married on May 3, 1947; one son, David M. Franko of Painesville; two daughters, Cathy Zimmerman of Madison and Donna Novak of Painesville Township; one brother, Robert Stromme of North Carolina; one sister, Ann Hanks of Geneva; five granddaughters, Jennifer, Lisa, Melissa, Megan and Heather; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Sigurd Stromme. Service is 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Ave., Painesville. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mentor Cemetery.
