Paul G. Pearson
Paul G. Pearson, president of Miami University from 1981 to 1992, died of cancer at his Oxford home early Saturday morning at age 73. Pearson became Miamišs 18th president following 26 years at Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he served as a zoology department faculty member and department chairman, as well as associate provost, executive vice president and acting president. He was born in Lake Worth, Fla., and received his undergraduate, masteršs and doctoral degrees from the University of Florida. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Thomas of Atlanta, Ga., and Andrew of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Jean McCabe of London, England, and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were Tuesday at Oxford United Methodist Church, with a private burial following. A receiving line was held Monday evening at the church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Paul G. Pearson Scholarship Fund at Miami University. Donations may be sent to the fund at Panuska Development Center, Miami University, Oxford, OH, 45056.

Helen H. Roll
Helen H. Roll, 95, of Oxford, died early Saturday morning, Aug. 12, at the Oxford View Nursing Center. She was born on Aug. 2, 1905, in Hamilton, the daughter of Michael and Caroline (Schmitt) Hammel. She is survived by a son, Kent Roll and his wife, Beverly, of Oxford; a daughter, Nancy Greaves and her husband, Gordon, of Mt. Prospect., Ill.; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Dale Roll. Funeral services were held Tuesday. Burial was at the Rose Hill Burial Park, Hamilton.

Harold Browning
Harold Browning, 80, of Camden, died on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 9, at Fort Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton. Browning was born on March 22, 1920 in Mason, the son of the late Cassius and Beulah (Blackburn) Browning. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech. He married Doris Beasley on July 10, 1946, in Newport, Ky. He is survived by his wife, Doris Browning of Camden; four children, Daniel Browning of Hewitt, N.J., Kathy (Charles) Baldwin of Oxford; Amy Caudill and her fiancee, Randy Spencer of Cape Coral, Fla., and Michael (Kim) Browning of Gastonia, N.C.; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, his mother-in-law, Dorothy Beasley of Oxford and one sister, Ruth (Donald) King of Marthašs Vineyard, Mass. Funeral services were held on Sunday. Burial was at Fairmount Cemetery in Camden. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 203, Eaton, OH 45320 or to the Camden Somers Township Fire Department, P.O. Box 154, Camden, OH 45311.

Harry D. Thiers
Harry D. Thiers, 81, of Peoria, Ill., died on Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Hueston Woods State Park near Oxford. Thiers was born on Jan. 22, 1919, in Fort McKavitt, Texas, the son of the late Harry and Sadie (Merck) Thiers. He married Ellen Birkett on Aug.15, 1953 in Mackinaw City, Mich. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Thiers, of Peoria, Ill.; one daughter, Barbara Thiers and her husband, Roy, Halling and one granddaughter, Mary Halling, all of Yonkers, New York. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Harry Thiers Mentor Fund/Mycological Society of America. R.C. Nein and Sons-Thompson Funeral Home, Camden, was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest J. Pollock Sr.
Ernest Johnston Pollock Sr., 93, of Hudson, Fla., died on Saturday, Aug. 12, in Hudson. Pollock was born on Aug. 23, 1906, in Camden, Ohio, the son of the late O.D. and Emma Luella (Clemmens) Pollock. He married his wife, Ruby, on June 28, 1933 in Richmond, Ind. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Pollock of Hudson, Fla.; two daughters, Mary (Marvin) Kronour of Hannibal, Mo., and Rebecca (Kenneth Bostelman of Miamisburg; and one son, Ernest (Vickie) Pollock Jr. of Hudson, Fla; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the R.C. Nein & Sons 9 Thompson Funeral Home, 249 N. Main St., Camden, with Rev. Jim Poyner officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery. David C. Farthing
David C. Farthing, 50, of West College Corner, Ind., died early Thursday morning, Aug. 10, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford. He was born on Nov. 20, 1949, in Hamilton, the son of Howard and Ruth (Richardson) Farthing. He is survived by his mother, Ruth Farthing of West College Corner, Ind.; three brothers, Michael Farthing and wife Kathy, and Christopher Farthing, all of West College Corner, Ind., and Gregory Farthing and wife, Sherry, of Camden; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Howard; brothers, William and Jimmy and sisters, Carolyn Grover and Jean Darling. Graveside services were held on Saturday, Aug. 12 at the College Corner Cemetery, Union County, Ind. The Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, Oxford was in charge of the services.

Lloyd Himelick
Lloyd Himelick died at home in Oxford on Tuesday evening, Aug. 15, at the age of 102. He was born on Feb. 13, 1898 in Bath, Ind. In 1918 he married Mabel Brauchla. He farmed in the Union and Wayne County area all his working life. Burial was Aug. 18 at the Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, Boston, Ind. The family has suggested that memorial donations be made to the Parkinson Disease Foundation or to the charity of the donor's choice in Mr. Himelick's memory.

Arthur John Snow
Arthur John Snow, 76, of Liberty, Ind., died last Thursday afternoon, Aug. 17, at Fayette Memorial Hospital, Connersville, Ind. He was born on April 12, 1924, in Burney, Ind. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was a lifetime member of the Liberty VFW Post 1472. There were no public visitation or services. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice in Mr. Snow's memory.

William Poston
Charles Richard Herms died in Sarasota, Fla., on July 28, 2000. He was born on Sept. 23, 1907 in Portsmouth, Ohio. He moved to Oxford in 1962 following military service. He was a professor of mathematics at Western College for Women for five years. A memorial service was held on Aug. 2 at Plymouth Harbor in Sarasota. Donations in his memory may be sent to the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association in Annapolis, Md.

Charles Richard Herms

Wilbur Ferris
Wilbur Ferris, age 73, of Camden, died on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at McCullough-Hyde Hospital. Ferris was born on July 16, 1927, in Camden. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the military during World War II. He was employed at Armco Steel until his retirement in 1983. Burial was at Fairmount Cemetery in Camden.

Cecil E. "Pete" Wilkinson Jr.
Cecil E. "Pete" Wilkinson Jr., 44, of Saratoga, died Thursday, Aug. 17, in St. Vincent Randolph Hospital, Winchester. Mr. Wilkinson was born on Dec. 11, 1955 in Richmond. He was employed at Applegate Steel in Saratoga. He was an Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam conflict. Burial was Sunday at New Liberty Cemetery, with military rites.

Clara L. Sherman
Clara L. Sherman, 98, died at the Oxford View Nursing Center on Thursday morning, Aug. 17. She was born June 8, 1902, in Newport. She was married on June 9, 1925 to Alfred J. Sherman. He died in 1970. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Angels Catholic Church, 324 S. Ohio Ave., Sidney, OH 45365, or the Wilson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, 915 W. Michigan St., Sidney, OH 45365.

Flora Mae Nesselhauf
Mae Nesselhauf, 98, of Oxford, died at noon on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital. She was born on Oct. 28, 1901, in Oxford. In 1920 she married Howard Nesselhauf in Detroit. He preceded her in death in 1943. For many years she worked in the kitchen of Oxford College. In her later life she worked as a nanny for several families in the Oxford area. Burial was Tuesday at the Mennonite Cemeter

Donald Cox
Donald C. Cox, 64, professor of microbiology at Miami University and former chair of the microbiology department, died at home Monday, Aug. 28, of cancer. His research focused on the biochemistry and molecular biology of the replication of human viruses. Most recently, he looked at the use of human viruses as tumor therapeutic agents. He joined Miami's faculty in 1978 as chair of the department of microbiology after serving on the faculty of the University of Oklahoma since 1965. A funeral service was held Thursday, Aug. 31, at Miami's Sesquicentennial Chapel. Leona Starr Markel
Leona Starr Markel, 97, of Oxford, died Monday, Aug. 28, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital. She was born June 25, 1903 in Xenia, Ohio. She worked as a Home Extension Agent with the Butler County Extension Service, a position she held for nearly 20 years. Following her retirement from the Extension Service, she continued to reside in Oxford and worked for many years as a volunteer at the McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Smith & Ogle Funeral Home. Burial was in Sabina, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital, 110 N. Poplar St., Oxford, Ohio 45056; the Salvation Army; Children's Hospital of Cincinnati; or a charity of one's choice.

Florence Weller
Florence Weller, 87, of Brookville, Ind., died Aug. 16 at Mercy Hospital, Hamilton. She was born Sept. 8, 1912 in Knoxville, Tenn. She had lived in Franklin County since moving there from College Corner in 1948. She married Henry E. Weller Sr. on Sept. 6, 1935. He preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1992. She was a retired railroad telegraph operator. Funeral services were held Aug. 19 at the Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home, Brookville, Ind. Burial was in College Corner Cemetery, West College Corner, Ind. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or Hospice, of Cincinnati at Mercy Hospital.

Ethel L. Arnold
Ethel L. Arnold, 79, of Bath, Ind., died Sunday evening, Aug. 27, at the Oxford View Nursing Center. She was born in Bath, Ind. on Oct. 6, 1920. She had worked as a nurse for 33 years, working at Clinton Memorial Hospital, Wilmington, Ohio; McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital, in Oxford; and the Oxford View Nursing Center, where she retired in 1990. She married John Lucas Arnold on Nov. 27, 1936, in Lawrenceburg, Ind. He preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 31 at the Showalter-Blackwell-Long Funeral Home, Baker Chapel, in College Corner, Ohio. Burial was in the College Corner Cemetery, West College Corner, Ind. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice in her memory.

Mildred L. Crawford
Mildred L. Crawford, 83, of Stone Mountain, Ga., formerly of Camden, Ohio, died on Saturday, Aug. 26, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. She was born March 23, 1917 in Camden. She married James Crawford on October 18, 1952, in Camden. He preceded her in death in 1982. She was employed as a bank teller for many years at First National Bank in Camden. A memorial service was held in her honor Thursday, Aug. 31, at the R.C. Nein and Sons ­ Thompson Funeral Home.
