George Matthew Verity Hook
For all that George Matthew Verity Hook accomplished, Jim Waxweiler will remember him for his generosity. Waxweiler said Hook, 82, who passed away Saturday in Naples, Fla., was well-known for helping others. Years ago, when Poland was under communist rule, he arranged for a young man from there to attend college in the United States. "He knew that's what the boy wanted," said Waxweiler, who replaced Hook as vice president, Europe and Africa, for Armco International in 1977. Hook also opened his house in Normandy, France, to friends and family and loved to treat them to a fireworks display. "It was a beautiful place," Waxweiler said. "Absolutely lovely." Hook was born in Middletown in 1917. He was the son of Armco chief executive Charles M. Hook and grandson of Armco founder George M. Verity. Hook's first job at Armco was as a cold mill feeder at the company's Middletown Works during school vacation periods in 1936 and 1937. His first full-time assignment, shortly after graduating from Yale University in 1939, was at the Kansas City works of Armco's Sheffield Division. During World War II from 1942 to 1945, Hook served as lieutenant in the 40th Tank Battalion, a unit in Gen. George Patton's Third Army. Involved in the liberation of Metz, Hook's tank received a direct hit. He was wounded and forced to return to the U.S., but his efforts were recognized by the French government. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre for bravery in saving the French village from destruction. He also received a Silver Star and Purple Heart. After the war, he rejoined Armco as a sales trainee in Armco International, took a leave of absence the same year and, along with William Verity, worked on the so-called Quota for Force Plan for Peace, a proposal to use only the armed forces of small nations to help the U.N. keep the peace. He later was named assistant to the president at Armco, and then general manager for Armco-Paris and European area director in 1957. He retired in 1977 as vice president, Europe and Africa, for Armco International. Waxweiler said Hook also enjoyed playing golf and tennis, a sport he played at Yale. He said Hook had a good sense of humor, and he loved telling stories. "He was just wonderful," Waxweiler said. He leaves his wife, Rosalie Hook, formerly of LeFroy, France; a son, George, of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Jean Kaywood of Baltimore, Md., and a grandson. The family announced a memorial service will be held for him in Paris at a time to be determined.
