Marian K. Beck
Mrs. Marian K. Beck, 94, of Monroe, Ohio, formerly of Middletown, passed away Monday, March 12, 2001, at Mount Pleasant Retirement Village. She was born on June 30, 1906, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Charles Ker and Ethelyn (Hoskins) Ker. Mrs. Beck was a member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 73 years, where she was a member of the Deborah Circle. She had attended both Indiana and Purdue Universities during which time she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gama Sorority. She was a Red Cross nurse's aide during World War II. She was also very active in several Middletown organizations. Among them were the Middletown Current Events Club, Garden Club, Regional Hospital Auxiliary, Women's Symphony and Salvation Army Auxiliary. Mrs. Beck had also served on the board of the Butler County Children's Home. She leaves a son, Charles (Ann) Beck Jr. of Middletown; a sister, Ethelyn Bergevin of Bloomington, Ind.; five grandsons David A. and Matthew B. Driscoll, and Todd A., Douglas R. and Jonathan W. Beck; and six great-grandchildren, Hannah and Lauren Driscoll, and Ivalee, Sian, Wesley and Nathanael Beck. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Beck in 1985; her parents; and a daughter, Marjorie Driscoll in 1974.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Middletown, with the Rev. John Keeny officiating. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery, Middletown. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in the church parlor.

Lura Davis Bolden
Mrs. Lura (Davis) Bolden, 85, a resident of Garden Manor Extended Care Center since 1996, died there on Friday morning, March 16, 2001. Mrs. Bolden was a member of University Baptist Church and loved music. She is survived by six nieces, Wilma J. Muncie, Genevieve Perkins, Bernice Byerly, Stella Ann Johnson, Ginger Martin and Brenda Ihle; five nephews, Kepler Davis, Douglas Davis, Eddie Dale Davis, Dewayne Davis and H. G. Davis; and a great-nephew, the Rev. Canon Stephen D. Muncie. Mrs. Bolden was preceded in death by her parents, Hiram and Daught (Crace) Davis; her husband, Wilbur Bolden in 1997; and four brothers, Monroe, Emerson, Rexford and Edison Davis.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. at Bonita Drive. Visitation will be Sunday at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. Officiants are Revs. Nolan Phillips and Canon Stephen D. Muncie. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.

Sarah Ann Carmody
CARLISLE -- Mrs. Sarah Ann Carmody, 59, of 1031 Sierra Court, passed away Monday, March 12, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in Princeton, Ky., on Feb. 28, 1942, the daughter of Glen and Lillian (Hankins) Marshall. Mrs. Carmody was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Eugene Marshall in 1944. She is survived by her husband, Michael S. Carmody; a son, Michael D. Carmody of Franklin; a daughter, Kimberly Alexander of Germantown; a brother, Carl Chambliss of Poasttown; two sisters, Faye Johnson of Dawson Springs, Ky., and Ruth Dunning of Carlisle; and grandchildren, Brandon Alexander and Erica Downs.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Eaton-Anderson & Unglesby Funeral Home, 1357 E. Second St., Franklin, with the Rev. Roy Taylor officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Springboro Cemetery.

Ralph E. Cummins
FRANKLIN -- Ralph E. Cummins, 92, of 25 W. Third St., passed away Monday, March 12, 2001, at Sycamore Hospital. He was born on Sept., 26, 1908, in Carlisle, Ohio, the son of Edwin and Nora (Mears) Cummins. Mr. Cummins was a World War II veteran. He served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corp and was stationed in and around Manilla, Phillipine Islands. He was employed as a machinist for the Inland Division of General Motors for more than 30 years. He became a member of the Carlisle Lions Club and was still a senior member at the time of his death. Mr. Cummins was also a member of the Franklin Post of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a charter member of the Simon Kenton Long Rifle Association. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bette (Eriche) Cummins; a sister, Mrs. Robert Snyder; and a brother, Lylburn Cummins. He is survived by his daughters, Jayne Palmer, and her husband, John, of Franklin, and Judy Kidwell of Springboro; a grandson, Christian Kidwell, and wife, Brande, of Springboro, and Brandon Kidwell of West Carrollton; a granddaughter, Lauren Palmer of Franklin; and a great-granddaughter, Britney Kidwell.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at noon Friday, March 16, at the Anderson Funeral Home, 40 N. Main St., Springboro. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery, Middletown, with full military honors.

Alice Dechant
GERMANTOWN -- Mrs. Alice Dechant, 97, of Germantown, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. Alice was a lifelong resident of Germantown. She was born on June 5, 1903, the daughter of the late John and Zoah (Thompson) Kesling. She was a member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence, in 1976; a sister, Hazel Beachler; a brother, Kenneth Kesling; and a son-in-law, Robert Ledford. Survivors include a daughter, Doris, and her husband, Tom Jones, of Monroe; two grandchildren, Randy Ledford, and his wife, Sheila, of Middletown, and Brenda McAlister of Carlisle; and four great-grandchildren.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Arpp & Root Funeral Home in Germantown. Burial will be in Germantown Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Robert E. Fenton
Robert Edwin "Bob" Fenton, 90, of Middletown, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Garden Manor Extended Care Center. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Oct. 15, 1910, the son of Sidney and Luella (Zacharias) Fenton. He served his country in the Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 218. Mr. Fenton was retired from the Middletown School System. He was an enthusiastic Cincinnati Reds fan. He leaves a daughter, Cathy Benfield of Bakersfield, Calif.; three brothers, Tom (Jane) Fenton of North Palm Beach, Fla., and Cary (Nancy) Fenton and Donald (Mary) Fenton, both of Middletown; a grandchild, Dennis Caviness; a great-grandchild, Chance Caviness; numerous nieces and nephews; and numerous family and friends at Garden Manor. Mr. Fenton was preceded in death by his wife, Edith; his parents; and three sisters, Helen Fenton, Juanita Pelley and Estella Calvin.
ARRANGEMENTS: Graveside services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Woodside Cemetery, with the Rev. James Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home.

William Fry
MIAMISBURG -- William Fry, 72, of Miamisburg, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Hospice of Dayton. He was born on May 23, 1928, to Herman and Helen (Rotterman) Fry. He was married to Beatrice (Ditzler) Fry, and she died on July 24, 1999. Mr. Fry was retired from the General Motors Delco Moraine Plant where he had worked as a machine repairman. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by two sons, Charles Fry and Chris Fry (and wife, Bev), both of Miamisburg; four grandchildren; sisters JoAnn Purky of Franklin and Margaret Norris of Carlisle; and four brothers, Richard Fry of Franklin, Robert Fry of Lebanon, Walter Fry of West Carrollton and Lester Fry of Temperance, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Brough-Getts Funeral Home, 102 S. Second St., Miamisburg, Ohio. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Lawrence D. Glenn
Lawrence D. "Whitey" Glenn, 77, of 353 Wylie Road, Seamon, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Miami Valley Hospital. He was born in Lawrence County, Ky., on Oct. 20, 1923, the son of Frank and Flora (Rowland) Glenn. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Glenn was employed at Dayton Walther Corp. in Dayton for 35 years. He was a member of the Tranquility Pentecostal Church in Seamon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mable, in 1995; a grandson, Robbie Owens; a granddaughter, Missy Siebert; two brothers, Charlie and Vernon Glenn; and two sisters, Geneva Patton and Edith Gay. Surviving are his wife, Leona; three sons, Albert Disher, and his wife, Joyce, of Peebles, Ronnie Disher, and wife, Faye, of Franklin, and Lee Disher of Peebles; five daughters, Edith Elliott, and her husband, Jim, of Germantown, Judith Glenn of Franklin, Linda Smith, and husband, Winford, of Franklin, Carol Hawkins, and husband, Bill, of West Chester, and Carolyn Glenn, and husband, Roger, of Seamon; a brother, Jesse Glenn, and wife, Renee, of Blue Creek; two sisters, Marie Disher, and her husband, Leroy, of Peebles, and Effie Wells of Peebles; 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by family and church members.

Hazel D'Orr Hackney
Mrs. Hazel D'Orr Hackney, 93, of Middletown, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Willow Knoll Nursing Center. She was born on June 11, 1907, in Clay City, Ky., the daughter of Carl C. Bowman and Dora (Lowe) Bowman. Mrs. Hackney was a member of the Pythian Sisters and the Senior Citizens of Middletown. She is survived by her son, Donald C. (Ruth Marie) Hackney of Estero, Fla.; four grandchildren, Donald C. Hackney II of Baton Rouge, La., Cindy Terek of Arvada, Colo., Mary Lou Mason of Crestview, Fla., and Gary Hackney of Damburg, Germany. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto, in 1975; a son, Richard in 1990; and her parents.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home, with Dr. William Anderson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Entombment will be at Woodside Cemetery Mausoleum.

Walter H. Hall
On Monday, March 12, 2001, Walter H. Hall succumbed to a lengthy illness. Walter was 63. He was a resident of Middletown, Ohio, for more than 15 years. Walter was the son of the late Clayton and Mabel Hall. Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Martha Hall of Middletown; four sons, John Thomas of Cincinnati, Ohio, Tre' Hall of Lorain, Ohio, David Hall of Lorain and Daniel of Middletown; two daughters, Gail Lemmon of Cochran, Ga., and Mavis Wingard of Xenia, Ohio; a host of grand and great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Jethro Hall and Joe Hall of New Jersey.
ARRANGEMENTS: Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Hall-Jordan Memorial Chapel, 918 S. Main St., Middletown. The viewing will be at noon. Burial will be at Butler County Memorial Park.

Mabel D. Howard
Mrs. Mabel D. Howard, 87, of Morgantown, W. Va., died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at her home. She was born on Feb. 14, 1914, in Huntington, W. Va., the daughter of the late Ona L. and Myrtle Mae Delancy Dunfee. She grew up on 21st and Fifth Avenue in Huntington, W. Va. She was a graduate of Huntington High School, class of 1932, and attended Marshall College. She was a Methodist. Spanning over 30 years, she served Spruce Street United Methodist Church, Westover United Methodist Church and Johnson Chapel as their organist and choir director. Mrs. Howard was a well-known organist and accompanist for more than 48 years. She is survived by a son and his wife, James L. and Lynn A. Howard of Middletown, Ohio; three daughters, Jane Fritts of Newark, Del., Julia Howard of Morgantown and JoEllen Rodeheaver of Morgantown; six grandchildren, John L. Howard, Peter J. Howard, Patrick C. S. Howard, Aaron Beres, Rachael Beres Smith and John Fritts; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Harold C. (Ike) Howard; four brothers, Howard Dunfee, Horace Dunfee, Neal Dunfee and Leslie Dunfee; and a sister, Geraldine McCallister.

Dena Kakoliris
Mrs. Dena Kakoliris, 78, of Middletown, Ohio, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 17, 2001, at her home in Birmingham, Ala. She graduated from Middletown High School and Middletown Business College. She was employed as a secretary to the president of Aeronca until her marriage to Peter Kakoliris of Birmingham. Mrs. Kakoliris was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; her parents, George and Georgia Eliopoulos; and her brothers, Arthur and Peter Eliopoulos. She is survived by her son, George Kakoliris, daughter Joanne Fogle, and granddaughters Christine and Constance Kakoliris, all of Birmingham; her brother, James Eliopoulos, and her sister, Mary Kucer of Middletown, and her sister, Adrianne Gaspar of Cincinnati, Ohio. She was very active in her church and in her work with the sick and elderly and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was a charter member of the Middletown Chapter of National Secretaries Association and member of the Daughters of Penelope and GOYA.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation was held Monday, March 19, at Holy Trinity Cross Cathedral in Birmingham, Ala., from 4:30 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. today, March 20, at the church.

Joanne C. Keicher
Mrs. Joanne C. (Brinkman) Keicher, 69, of Forest Park, Ohio, died suddenly Sunday, March 18, 2001, at her residence. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on March 16, 1932, to William Brinkman and Johanna (Niehaus) Brinkman. She was the former wife of the late Donald C. "Keig" Keicher; dear mother of Donna (Joe) Cunningham, Dawn (Lee) Hutchinson and Denise (Ed Jr.) Boehl; grandmother of Frank Worpenberg, Joe and Amber Cunningham, Gaehl, Alyson, Nathan and Irene Hutchinson, and Kyle and Keely Boehl; sister of George "Dodie" (Armella) Brinkman, Carl "Kayo" (Nancy) Brinkman and Charlotte "Bull" Ungruhe. Mrs. Keicher was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.

James M. Lakes
TRENTON -- James Milton "Red" Lakes, 81, of Trenton, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, March 14, 2001. Born on Feb. 8, 1920, in Madison County, Ky., he was the son of Walter and Lucy (Thorpe) Lakes. On Feb. 25, 1940, in Liberty, Ind., James married his wife of 61 years, Virginia Ethel Rieger. He retired from a service station which he owned and operated and was a member of the Hamilton West Baptist Church for 52 years. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lakes of Trenton; a son, James Lowell Lakes of Middletown; two daughters, Joyce Irene Simpson, and her husband, Charles, of Trenton, and Janet Elaine Hazelwood, and her husband, David, of Monroe; four grandchildren, Sandra Paulson, and her husband, Mark, of Trenton, Timothy Simpson of Trenton, Suzanne Garver, and her husband, Michael, of Monroe, and Melynda Hazelwood of Fairfield; six great-grandchildren, Joshua Paulson, Elijah Paulson, Alex Comer, Jacob Simpson, Caleb Simpson and Alayna Garver; a brother, Hympsel Lakes of Richmond, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Lakes was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Wayne Malott
Former Middletown resident Wayne Malott, 67, of Stilesville, Ind., died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Hendricks Community Hospital. He was born in Batavia, Ohio, on June 9, 1933, the son of Ralph and Elsie (Ranson) Malott. Mr. Malott was a buyer for Stilesville Implement Sales where he had worked for 24 years before retiring in 1997. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Fugate) Malott; three daughters, Kathy Malott of Stilesville, Terry Finney of Middletown, Ohio, and Debbie Robinson of Plainfield, Ind.; two sons, Rusty Malott of Eminence, Ind., and Anthony Malott of Gratis, Ohio; a brother, Floyd Gifford Malott of Georgia; two sisters, Selma Ridenour of Ohio and Violet Penney of Virginia; and eight grandchildren.

Christopher Mandelert
Christopher J. Mandelert, 34 years, of Dancsmoor Road, Holland, Ohio, died suddenly Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Fremont Memorial Hospital. Mr. Mandelert was born in Marquette, Mich., on Dec. 1, 1966, to Charles and Jeanne (Harvey) Mandelert. He married Christine Tatum on Sept. 19, 1987, in Fort Riley, Kan. A U.S. Army veteran, Chris was a field support supervisor for three and a half years working for the Senior Technology Co. of Nebraska. Surviving are his wife, Christine; a daughter, Caroline; his mother, Jeanne of Middletown, Ohio; a sister, Mary (Rick) Kaufman of Toledo; and a brother, Michael Mandelert of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles on July 29, 1990.
ARRANGEMENTS: Friends may be received in the Neville Funeral Home Southwest Chapel, 7438 Airport Highway, Holland, Ohio (419-865-8879) from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2001. Memorial services will immediately follow at 2 p.m. Monday with Deacon Michael Learned officiating. Burial will be private.

Fred McPherson
TRENTON -- "Fearless" Fred McPherson, 72, of Trenton, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at his residence. He was a Trenton native and lifelong resident. He was born on May 26, 1929, to Pierce McPherson Sr. and Becky (Hollon) McPherson. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Mr. McPherson was a fireman for the City of Middletown. He retired in 1980 after 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 1996; his parents; and a brother, Pierce McPherson Jr. Survivors include a daughter, Marcella Tuttle of Trenton; two granddaughters, Becky Tuttle and Tiffany Tuttle, both of Trenton; a niece, Jackie Marra of Dallas, Texas; two nephews, Paul McPherson of Baltimore, Md., and Tom McPherson of Dallas.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Joseph Baker-Stevens Funeral Home in Middletown, with the Rev. Harold Thompson officiating. Interment will be at Butler County Memorial Park. There will be no visitation.

Robert Miller Jr.
CARLISLE -- Robert "Bo" Miller Jr., 47, passed away at his home in Carlisle Friday, March 15. He was the son of Robert Miller Sr. and the late Joan Miller. He was a member of the First Church of God in Franklin and sat on the Board of Trustees. He is survived by his three children, Kimberly (Christopher) Hamm of Franklin, Christopher (Donna) Miller of Carlisle and Rebecca (Kenny) Miller of Centerville; two sisters, Debi (Dennis) Cantrell of Franklin and Laura Middleton of Columbus; brother Tim (Cheryl) Miller of Franklin; and three grandchildren, Evan, Logan and Samantha.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at the First Church of God in Franklin. Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the church. Burial will be in Miami Valley Memory Gardens. Eaton-Anderson & Unglesby Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

George G. Moen
George Gregory Moen, born April 9, 1926 in Tacoma, Wash., died March 17, 2001 in Middletown at the age of 74. He was the son of George and Rose Moen of Eatonville, Wash. An attorney, he was a graduate of the Gonzaga University School of Law. He was outstandingly generous and, like his wife Mildred P. Moen, who preceded him in death, loved his country. He served in the Navy during World War II and in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He continued service to his country in civilian life as an attorney for several branches of the government. Education and learning were his passion, pursuing advanced degree studies and certifications in his spare time, and ranking consistently at the top of his class. He was especially captivated by children, particularly his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and grandnieces and grandnephews. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Jeanine Davidson of Beaverton, Ore.; sons George G. Moen of Bainbridge Island, Wash. and Glenn P. Moen of Lyme, N.H.; and sister Mary Patricia Tennant of Middletown. He is also survived by five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Ruby C. Moon
Former Middletown resident Mrs. Ruby C. Moon, 82, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky. She was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on Dec. 16, 1918, to Claude Halsey and Nancy (Nickel) Halsey. Mrs. Moon formerly lived in Middletown and graduated from Middletown High School in 1936. She worked for Barkelew Electric Co. and later worked as a supervisor with the Industrial Commission of Ohio. She leaves two sons, Keith A. (Betsy) Moon of Aiken, S.C., and Kevin C. (Rosalie) Moon of Nevada, Ohio; and 12 grandchildren, Alison (Steve) Nichols, Abigail, Jordan and Lindsay Moon, Gwendolyn and Whitney Moon, Kevin Moon Jr., and Caroline and Gregory Moon, Kristen and David Limpert and Nicole Bell. Mrs. Moon was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur W. in 1966; and her parents, Claude and Nancy Halsey.

Mary Oglesby
Mrs. Mary (Comminos) Oglesby, 76, of Middletown, passed away Wednesday evening, March 14, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in Middletown on June 23, 1924, a daughter of Steve and Lillie (Kourges) Comminos. She was a registered nurse and began her career at Middletown Regional Hospital as a supervisor in the private corridor. She then worked for several years as a surgical nurse for Dr. Kenneth Smith, and later, as an industrial nurse for Diamond International Co. She was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. Surviving are a sister, Georgia Comminos, with whom she resided; a brother, George Comminos of Middletown; a nephew, Steven Comminos; and great-nephews, Steven, Billy and Donny. She was preceded in death by her parents; by her first husband, Karl Brown in 1961; her second husband, August Oglesby in 1986; and her children, Gregory and Stephanie.

Robert L. Pearson
FRANKLIN -- Robert Lester Pearson, 75, formerly of Franklin, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Sycamore Hospital. A native of Seven Mile, Ohio, he was the son of Fred and Nora Ellen (Reese) Pearson. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corp and had worked as a machinist and tool and die maker for Aeronca Mfg. in Middletown. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Chester and Green Smith. He is survived by his loving wife, Mildred (Marshall) Pearson; sons Gary (Linda) Pearson, Dave (Trina) Pearson, Keith Rogers of Miamisburg, Joel Rogers of Franklin and Donnie (Marna) Rogers of Gratis; and a daughter, Cathy (Tim) Noble of Lebanon. He is also survived by his brothers, Leroy, Delmar, Richard, James and William (Cody) Pearson, and Walter Smith; sisters Helen Glass, Reva Camp and Fairy Turner; and 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

LINDENWALD - Christopher Lane "Chris" Pelfrey, 29, of Lindenwald, Ohio, passed away 6:47 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2001 at the University of Cincinnati Hospital where he had been a patient for 2½ weeks following an accident. He was born Feb. 18, 1972 in Middletown, Ohio. He grew up and lived most of his life in Butler County. He is described by has family as liking pets, especially dogs. He also liked to listen to music. He traveled quite a bit and always enjoyed the outdoors. He was one of three children of his deceased mother, Sandra Pelfrey. Chris will be sadly missed. He is survived by his father Robert L. "Bob" (wife Linda) Pelfrey of Middletown; sister Nikki D. Shackelford of Poasttown; brother Curt D. Pelfrey of Middletown; niece Brittany Shackelford of Poasttown; half-brother Bobby (wife Cindy) Pelfrey of Middletown; nephew Bobby Pelfrey Jr. of Middletown; maternal grandmother Neva McKinney of West Middletown, Ohio; paternal grandfather Floyd (wife Alene) Pelfrey of Middletown; uncles Vondal McKinney of West Virginia, Gary McKinney of Cincinnati, Jerry McKinney of Mississippi, Owen McKinney of West Middletown, Ohio and David McKinney of Trenton; and aunts Dean Rollins of Lewisburg, Ohio, Linda Tipton of West Middletown, Ohio and Bonnie Duff of Middletown. Harold Prater
HAMILTON -- Harold Prater, 66, formerly of Somerville, died Friday, March 16, 2001 at 11:35 p.m. in McCullough Hyde Hospital, Oxford. He was born in Adams County, Ohio, on Feb. 25, 1935, the son of Walter and Bessie (McGuire) Prater. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from Sept. 2, 1952 to Sept. 3, 1955. He married Betty Christian on Sept. 1, 1962 in Rushville, Ind., and she preceded him in death on June 3, 1993. He was employed for St. Regis Paper Company, Middletown, for 17 years and in the maintenance department of the Talawanda School District for one year, retiring in 1989 due to a disability. He was a member of Eaton Church of Christ, Eaton, Camden Lodge #159, F&AM, Middletown VFW and the American Legion in West Alexandria. He is survived by four sons, Jeffrey Prater and his wife Heidi of Oxford; Gary Prater of Lake Lakengren, Jerry Prater of Somerville and Brian Prater of Collinsville and one daughter, Karen Rupp and husband Dan of Hamilton; his beloved friend, Thelma Rader and her family of Eaton, Ohio; four brothers, Waler Prater and wife Pauline of Salt Springs, Fla., Robert Prater of West Elkton, James Prater of Adams County and Paul Prater and wife Mary of Miltonville, Ohio; five sisters, Etta Bratcher and Betty Johnson, both of West Elkton, Cora Thomas of Astor, Fla., Virginia Hoffman and husband Dale of Seven Mile and Sylvia Love of Somerville; and seven grandchildren.

Charlotte C. Rast
Mrs. Charlotte C. Rast, 85, of Trenton, formerly of Athens, Ohio, died Monday, March 12, 2001, in Manor Care in Fairfield. She was born on Dec. 23, 1915, the daughter of the late Philip H. and Adaline E. Jordan Gemmer. She was born in Elkhart, Ind., and later lived in Columbus, Ohio, for many years. She later moved to Athens where she worked and retired from Ohio University. Mrs. Rast moved to Trenton in 1985. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Rast, in 1984; two brothers, Paul H. and Ward L. Gemmer; and a sister, Betty Garrison.

Samuel Reece
Samuel "Hank" Reece, 45, of Middletown, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at University of Cincinnati Hospital. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on July 22, 1955, and lived in the Middletown area for 17 years. He was the owner of BNH Cycle Works in Poasttown and had worked there for 11 years. Mr. Reece was a member of the American Motor Cycle Association, the Harley Owners Group, ABATE, and Eagles Lodge in Miamisburg. He belonged to the Full Gospel Outreach. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mavis Bair; and an uncle, Clifford Bud Coyle. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Rebecca; his mother, Bonnie Wilder of Germantown, and his father, Sam Reece of Akron; two daughters, Sheoki Reece of Middletown and Tara Reece, at home; a granddaughter, Dakota Clawson; a brother, Glen Edwards of Eaton; two sisters, Michelle Shanholtz of Germantown and Rachel Powell of Farmersville; nephews Shane Edwards and Levi Shanholtz; and a niece, Courtney Powell.

Oakley Smith
Oakley Smith, 74, formerly of Keister Road, Middletown, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. He was born on Jan. 6, 1927, in Owsley County, Ky., the son of George and Lillie (Stamper) Smith. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany for three years. He was employed by Dayton Tire & Rubber as a tire builder for 20 years. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Wesley Smith; and three sisters, Elsie Hensley, Elizabeth Wilson and Jeannette Collins. He is survived by his brothers, Conley Smith of Reading and Brown Smith.

William Spears
William E. Spears, 49, died March 16, 2001 in Middletown. Born Feb. 24, 1952 in San Antonio, Texas, Mr. Spears lived most of his life in Middletown. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and worked maintenance for the City of Middletown. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church and American Legion. He was preceded in death by his father William Spears, one niece and two nephews. Lester Spencer
Lester "Les" Spencer, born Sept. 24, 1934, in Baptist, Ky., and a 25-year resident of the Morongo Basin, Calif., died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at High Desert Continuing Care Center, Joshua Tree, Calif. Mr. Spencer was born to Darley Spencer and Estella (Osborne) Spencer. He worked as a CPA for 12 years and as a construction worker before becoming disabled in 1972. He lived as a quadriplegic for the last 28 years. He was an elder in The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Yucca Valley, Calif. He was the recipient of a certificate of appreciation from High Desert Continuing Care as a goodwill ambassador. Mr. Spencer is survived by his wife, Donna of Joshua Tree, Calif.; a daughter, Sandy Rodriguez of Joshua Tree; a son, Brian Keith Spencer of Middletown, Ohio; five sisters, Reva Pierce of Joshua Tree, Betty Jessup of Saskatchewan, Canada, Wanda Keefe of West Chester, Ohio, and Shirley Gassaway and Darlene Matthews, both of Pamplico, S.C.; four brothers, Paul Spencer and Wendell Spencer, both of Middletown, L. Keith Spencer of Trenton, Ohio, and Gregory Spencer of Yucca Valley, Calif.; his mother, Estella Spencer of Middletown; and three grandchildren.

Roy Steele
FRANKLIN - Roy Steele Sr., 60, of Franklin, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001. He was born on March 1, 1941, in Duquesne, Pa., and had lived in the Franklin area for 15 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Steele was a roofing contractor and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ora and Marie Steele; and three brothers, Edward, Robert and William Steele. Susan Thompson
Susan Lee Thompson, 89, a resident of the Garden Manor Retirement Community, passed away Friday evening, March 16, 2001. A native of Denniston, Ky., she had lived in Denver, Colo., since 1932, and worked as a cashier. Her husband, Noah Thomas Thompson, preceded her in death in 1978. She is survived by her sister, Bessie Combs of Middletown.

FRANKLIN -- Sarah Tomilson, 87, of Franklin, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born July 10, 1913 in Middletown, and spent her life in the area. She worked for 15 years as an accounts payable clerk at Aeronca, retiring in 1966. She was a member of the First United Pentacostal Church of Miamisburg. She was preceded in death by stepdaughter Betty Weber Mott, sister Alma McCoy and parents Taylor and Mirtie (Lewis) Wilson. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Rev. Alfred Tomilson; stepdaughters Ruby Jewell Richmond of LasCruces, N.M., Beatrice Rosenbalm of Mason and Delois A. Taylor of Franklin; 13 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and sister Betty Wilson of New Paris, Ohio.

Carl R. Warner Sr.
Carl R. Warner Sr., 68, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Warren County, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at his residence. He was born on Aug. 16, 1932, in Georgetown, Ohio. Mr. Warner was retired from General Motors of Moraine. He served in the Army during the Korean War, was wounded and received a Purple Heart medal. He attended the Ridgeville Community Church in Ridgeville, Ohio, the Franklin Baptist Church of Franklin, Ohio, and the Tabernacle in Sarasota, Fla. He also belonged to the Promise Keepers. Mr. Warner enjoyed working with wood and woodcrafting. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; a daughter, Cyndi Warner of Bradenton (with daughters Trina Kinney and Shannon Rice); three sons, Joseph D. of Warrensburg, Mo., Carl Ray Jr. of Tucson, Ariz., and Bob of Bradenton; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a stepsister, Bea Frank of Idaho.

He was born on March 10, 1917, in Lee County, Ky., the son of Elijah Williams and Zella (Estes) Williams. Mr. Williams retired from Armco Steel Co. in 1979 after 42 years of service. Melvin Armstrong
Melvin "Sonny" Armstrong, 72, of Middletown, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. He was born on March 7, 1929, in Skaneateles, N.Y., and had lived here for 70 years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Armstrong worked as a machinist at General Motors for 23 years before retiring in 1991. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barnett and Marguerite Armstrong; and two brothers, Don Armstrong and Marty Armstrong. Viola Brewer
Mrs. Viola Brewer, 88, formerly of 524 S. Sutphin St., passed away Sunday morning, March 4, 2001, at the Willow Knoll Retirement Community. She was born in Menifee County, Ky., on May 25, 1912, a daughter of Asa and Naomi (Pergram) Brown, and lived in this area most of her life. Mrs. Brewer worked as a clerk in several local stores and retired as manager of Harold's Dress Shop. She is survived by two daughters, Juanita Hoffman of Franklin and Pauline Curlis of Middletown; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Nettie Lykins of Middletown; a brother, Dinzle Brown of Washington Township; and a special friend, James Blangy. Her husband, Arthur Brewer, preceded her in death in 1982. She was also preceded in death by a son, Roy Brewer in 1987; and by three sisters and three brothers.

Arlie Bush
Arlie Bush, 75, of Middletown, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. He was born in Breathitt County, Ky., on May 27, 1925, the son of Asbury and Louverne Bush. Mr. Bush was employed as a truck driver for Cohen Brothers for 18 years, retiring in 1987. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy McIntosh in 1988, and his parents. Karla Hunter Canfield
Karla Hunter Canfield of Richmond, Va., died of cancer Friday, March 9, 2001. She was 66. A native of Middletown, Ohio, Ms. Canfield was business manager of the Oakes Children's Center, a treatment facility serving autistic, developmentally delayed and emotionally disturbed children, in San Francisco, Calif. for 37 years. She retired from Oakes in June of last year and moved from San Francisco to Richmond, Va., to be with family. Ms. Canfield dedicated her life to the welfare of autistic children and adults. One of the founding parents of Oakes Children's Center, Ms. Canfield was also instrumental in the creation of California Programs for the Autistic, an intensive-care residential program for autistic adults in Santa Rosa, Calif., where her son, Phillip, has lived since 1978. In addition to her son, survivors include her mother, Wilma Hunter, and two sisters, Sharon Reisdorf and Denise Hunter, all of Richmond.
ARRANGEMENTS: A private memorial service for friends and family followed by interment of Ms. Canfield's remains will be held in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Nona M. Chambers
Mrs. Nona M. Chambers, 81, of Middletown, passed away Monday, March 5, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born on Jan. 25, 1920, in Lee County, Ky., and lived here for 51 years. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Chambers was a loving wife and mother who devoted her life to her husband and children. Her strength of character and commitment to her family was never ending and extended to anyone who came in contact with her. She loved attending church, gardening and cooking for anyone who stepped through the door. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hamp Chambers in January, 1993; a son, Virgil Clayton Chambers in 1945; a daughter, Ora Chambers in 1943; two sons-in-law, Dale Tutt and Mark E McGlothen; and three sisters and one brother. She leaves two sons, Guy H. Chambers, and his wife, Mary, and Billy Chambers, all of Middletown; four daughters, Esther Tutt of Zoe, Ky., Gwendolyn McGlothen of Middletown, Rena Dalrymple, and husband, Sam, of Franklin, and Nora Manning, and husband, Roger, of Middletown; a brother, Charles Shackelford of Middletown; a sister, Betty Moore, and husband, Gene, of Union City, Ind.; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Joseph Baker-Stevens Funeral Home, with the Rev. Armel Taulbee officiating. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Millard E. Conarroe
Millard E. Conarroe, 69, of Middletown, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. A Middletown native and lifelong resident, he was born on July 18, 1931, the son of the late Charles C. and Mary R. Conarroe. He proudly served in the Army as a sergeant and field surveyor in the Korean War. Mr. Conarroe was manager of the energy department at Armco Steel Co. and had worked there for 41 years before retiring in 1989. He was a member of Jefferson Masonic Lodge 90 Free & Accepted Masons, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3809 and BPOE Eagles Lodge 257. He was occupied with many interests throughout his life. He was fascinated with the World Wide Web and the cultivation of Bonsai trees in his later years. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Conarroe; and an infant sister, Phyllis Jean Conarroe. He was the beloved husband of Pat Conarroe for 44 years; devoted father and grandfather to two sons, David B. Conarroe of Atlanta, Ga., and Steven M., and his wife, Julia Conarroe, of West Chester; and also survived by a daughter, Caran, and husband, Rod Pearson of Middletown; five grandchildren, Joshua, Sara and Melissa Conarroe and Claire and Matthew Conarroe; a brother, Larry, and wife, Karan Conarroe of Middletown; a sister, Rosann, and husband, Roger Burchett, of Miamisburg; several nephews and a niece; and his dogs, Katie and Molly. He was a good man who will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Alice C. Dannecker, 89, of Middletown, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born Dec. 25, 1911, in Danville, Ky., the daughter of Ben Clark and Sue (Hawkins) Clark. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Dannecker is survived by her daughter, Anne (husband, Hal) Yoder of Eaton; son, William C. (wife, Jean) Dannecker of Palm City, Fla.; four grandchildren, Deb (husband, Doug) Bryant of Hamilton, Bob (wife Christina) Yoder of Eaton, Chris (wife, Jennifer) Dannecker of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Kelly (husband, Sean) Heise of Omaha, Neb.; five great-grandchildren, Clayton and Katie Bryant, and Marti, Daria and Kyra Yoder; three sisters, Mattie Mae Turner and Susan Ensslin, both of Danville, Ky., and Dorothy Hoepfner of Tampa, Fla.; and two brothers, Ralph Clark of Danville, Ky., and J.T. Clark of Seaford, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Dannecker, in 1996; two sisters, Ethel Lawrence and Laura Belle Simpson; and two brothers, Robert Clark and Elwood Clark.

Robert E. Derickson
HAMILTON -- Robert E. Derickson, 78, of Hamilton, Ohio, died at the McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital at 3:10 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2001. He was born on May 9, 1922, the son of Earl E. and Gertrude M. (Leugers) Derickson of Oxford, Ohio. He was educated in the Millville/Ross local school district, graduating from Ross High School in 1940. He married Pearl Edythe McDuffee on May 15, 1943, in Millville, Ohio. He farmed for three years prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. The date of entry was Oct. 10, 1942. He reported to Fort Thomas, Ky., for induction and then to Camp Atterbury, Ind., for basic training. Robert was attached to the 3rd BN HQ 329th Regiment of the 83rd Infantry Division, the unit he remained with throughout the campaign. His unit was part of the initial invasion force in Normandy, France, on D-Day, June 6, 1944, through July 23, 1944. His unit saw action in five other major battles: northern France, July 24, 1944 - Sept. 14,1944; Luxembourg on Sept. 15, 1944 - Dec. 31, 1944; Adrennes, Jan. 1, 1945 - Jan 31, 1945; Rhineland, March 1, 1945 - March 31, 1945; and central Germany where his 83rd Division established the bridgehead at the Elbe River for the final assault on Berlin April 1, 1945 - May 9, 1945, V-E Day. Germany's surrender was Bob's best birthday ever. The 329th Infantry Regiment sustained 942 casualties of officers and enlisted men, with several thousand wounded-in-action. He was awarded the Purple Heart from a shrapnel wound during the Ardennes campaign in January 1945. His wound was dressed in the field hospital. He returned to action immediately. On Oct. 12, 1945, he was discharged from military service. After returning from World War II, he worked in a paper mill and then returned to farming for six years. The next 15 years he was a retail salesman, prior to working for Miami University as a food service manager for 25 years. He retired from Miami and began devoting his time to the 83rd Infantry Division. He served as their national secretary/treasurer for the past 21 years. Simultaneously, he served on the board of the Southwest Regional Water District. Mr. Derickson was also a 4-H adviser and had served on the Butler County Fair Board. A lifelong member of Faith United Church of Christ of Millville, Ohio, he was a Tri-F member since the 1960s and held numerous positions in the church over the past 40 years, including a one-time president of council and current treasurer of the Tri-F. Bob was also the recent treasurer of the Millville/ Ross Alumni Association. Robert and Pearl had two sons prior to and during the war and four daughters born after he returned from the war. He is survived by his six children and their spouses, Edward E., and wife, Kathryn A. Derickson, of Oxford, Robert (Mike) and Judith A. Derickson of Hamilton, Barbara D. and Lancer R. Weinrich of Middletown, Ohio, Frances N., and Michael M. Middaugh, of Columbus, Ohio, Marie A. and Timothy W. Lynch of Henderson, Ky., and Catherine J. and Bruce E. Darner of Hamilton. He has nine grandchildren: Robin and Andy Derickson of Seven Mile, Tim Derickson, and his wife, Regina, Laura Roseblossom, and her husband, Richard, both of Liberty Township, Christopher Charles Derickson of West Chester, Ohio, Katie and Benjamin Middaugh, of Columbus, Ohio, Sarah Lynch of Henderson, Ky., and Leslie Darner of Hamilton; five great-grandchildren, Timothy R. and Jessica R. Derickson, Steven R., and Michael A., and Christopher P. Roseblossom; one brother, Donald Derickson of Trenton, Ohio; two sisters, Clara Margaret Schlichter and Marie Garnett of Oxford. His wife of 58 years, Pearl, preceded him in death one year ago on March 4, 2000.

Mrs. Ila Fullen, 80, of Middletown, passed away Monday, March 5, 2001, at Middletown Regional Hospital. She was born in Jeremiah, Ky., on March 2, 1921, and lived in the Middletown area since 1940. Mrs. Fullen was a homemaker and a member of the Towne Boulevard Church of God. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Denver and Astor Caudill; a sister, Emma Lemay; a twin brother and sister, Nadine and Moonyene Caudill; her parents, Sam Ray Caudill and Ada Caudill Hampton; stepfather, John Hampton; stepsister, Artie Davis; and two stepbrothers, Earl and Arnold Hampton. Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Donald E. Fullen; a son, Darryl (Audrey) Fullen of Middletown; a grandson, Michael Fullen of Middletown; a brother, Burl (Bonnie) Caudill of Dayton, Ohio; four sisters, Bobbie (Charles) Stiver of Germantown, Marjorie (Charles) Collins of Alexandria, Ky., Ida Mae Caudill of Dayton, Ohio, and Georgia (Lawrence) Spicer of Middletown; two stepbrothers, Hendrix and Troy Hampton of Franklin, Ohio; and five stepsisters, Alta Combs of Clarksville, Ohio, Flarie Caudill of Kentucky, Ila Mae Cloud of Middletown, Ruth Smith of Kentucky and Allie Aldridge of Franklin.
