N. Evelyn Wennerstrom
N. Evelyn Wennerstrom, 88, formerly of Chagrin Falls, died Nov. 26 2001 at Oaks at Medina. Born April 23, 1913, in Iron Mountain, Mich., to Rev. Otto and Nellis Johnson, she was a 1934 graduate of Flora Stone Mather College of Case Western Reserve, where she was a member of the Sigma Omega sorority and associated with their sports program. She maintained her involvement with her church through participating in the choirs and women's organizations. Mrs. Wennerstrom is survived by her daughter, Lois (George) Winfield, of Wyandotte, Mich.; son, Carl (Linda) Wennerstrom, of Gainesville, Ga.; grandchildren, Kristin (Mark) Hillis, Amy Wennerstrom and Sarah (Steve) Drazetic; great-grandchildren, Kate E. Hillis and Nicholas C. Drazetic; sister-in-law, Lillian Johnson; brother-in-law, Gus Wennerstrom; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Henry Wennerstrom; her sister, Helen Hudson; and brother, David T. Johnson. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Dec. 15 at the United Methodist Church of Chagrin Falls, 20 S. Franklin St., Chagrin Falls 44022. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Sam Slate
Sam Slate, 70, of Hudson and formerly of Chagrin Falls, died May 27 2001 at Akron City Hospital following a brief illness. Born Nov. 30, 1930, in Omar, W.Va., he lived in Hudson for 10 years, prior to that in Chagrin Falls. Mr. Slate was district service manager with Gastown for 30 years and later ran a Mail Box, Etc. store in Euclid for five years. He was recently in building maintenance with Hudson school system. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1949. Mr. Slate is survived by his wife, Frances (nee York); daughters, Connie (Manuel) Iacano, of Twinsburg, Joann (John) Nemeth, of Strongsville, Mary (Chris) Kostura, of Chagrin Falls, and Kathy (Frank) Zugan Jr., of Chagrin Falls; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Unice Wilkinson, of Charleston, W.Va.; and a brother, Bill Slate, of Gatewood, Mo. Memorial services were held May 30.

Doris K. Belding
Doris K. Belding (nee Kirby), 84, of Hanover, N.H., died May 27 2001. Born April 10, 1917, in Cleveland, the daughter of James and Hazel (nee Hackett) Kirby, she was a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College and a former resident of Pepper Pike from 1972 to 1993, when they moved to New Hampshire. She married John A. Belding in February of 1941. From 1961 to 1972, they lived in Long Island, N.Y., where she was a troop leader and community chairman with the Nassau County Council of the Girl Scouts. She was also a member of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Nassau County Extension Services. While in New Hampshire, she was a volunteer in the Elderlife Program at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Mrs. Belding is survived by her husband of 60 years, John; sons, John A., of Lovell, Maine, and Thomas K., of Short Hills, N.J.; daughter, Jean Southworth, of Enfield, N.H.; seven grandsons and a granddaughter; brother, James Kirby, of Willoughby; and sister, Jeanette Jones, of Annadale, Va. Helen C. Settle
Helen Christine Settle (nee Cole), 92, of Oakhurst, Calif., died May 21 2001 at Briar Hill Nursing Home in Middlefield. Born Sept. 24, 1908, in Barberton, she was the former owner operator of the Sierra Sky Dude Ranch in Oakhurst during the 1940s and '50s. She married E.B. "Pinky" Settle in 1960, who was a Fresno based construction contractor. Upon his retirement, they moved to Long Beach, Calif., where they lived on their boat. He preceded her in death in 1985. A 1928 graduate of Medina High School and a 1932 graduate of Ohio State University, she worked for Douglas Aircraft in Los Angeles during World War II. Mrs. Settle is survived by her nieces, Becky Elder, of Newbury, Bonnie Pisching, of Chardon, and Diana Kyle, of Kalispell, Mont.; nephew, Terry Perkins, of New York; and step-daughters, Fran Foster and Jan Settle, both of California. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Riley and Gertrude (nee Bender) Cole; sister, Mildred Perkins; and three brothers. Private family services were held, with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery in Medina. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Harold E. Hoch
Harold E. Hoch, 76, of Chardon Township, died May 23 2001 in Mount Clemens, Mich. Born Aug. 13, 1924, in Nelsonville, he resided in Chardon for 35 years, prior in Painesville. He married Carol Shepard in 1954. She preceded him in death October 1998. Mr. Hoch was a veteran of World War II, having served his country in the U.S. Navy. A supervisor over foundries construction for General Motors for 35 years, he retired in 1993. He enjoyed living on and working on his 1965 52-foot Chris Craft on Lake St. Clair, Mich. He was known for his friendliness and enjoyed helping people. Mr. Hoch is survived by his daughter, Vicki Crawford, of Streetsboro; sons, Scott (Darlene) Hoch and Greg (Tammy) Hoch, both of Chardon; sister, Irene Lovenshiemer, of Nashport; brother, Jerry Hoch, of Lima; grandchildren, Jenny, Jackie and Jason Crawford, Kelly and Alyssa Hoch; and great-grandchildren, Brandon O'Donal and Cory Crawford. In addition to his wife, Carol, he was preceded in death by his parents, Garrett and Frieda (nee Burt) Hoch; and grandson, David Hoch. Funeral services were held May 30, with burial in Chardon Municipal Cemetery.

Doris Campfield
Doris Campfield, 101, of Hopkins, Minn., and formerly of Chagrin Falls, died May 14 2002. Born in Manchester, England, she married Frank Campfield in Detroit in 1924. They resided in Paw Paw Lake in South Russell until 1975, when they moved to Hopkins. Mrs. Campfield is survived by her daughter, Gloria (Harlan) Vatland; grandchildren, Cynthia (LeRoy) Wright, Linda (Arthur) Philipp, Cheryl (Kevin) Jefferies and Christopher Vatland; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by his husband and a daughter, Beverly Valentino. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. June 8 at Chapel View Care Center in Hopkins. A family service and interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg.

James S. Casteel
James Stephen Casteel, M.D., 73, of Gilbert, Ariz., and formerly of Hunting Valley, died May 19 2002 at Clearlake Regional Hospital in Webster, Texas. Born Sept. 30, 1928, in Cleveland, he moved to Arizona six years ago. A 1946 graduate of Newbury High School, Dr. Casteel attended Kent State University and completed his pre-medical training at Ohio State University. He graduated from the California College of Medicine in 1962 following internship at Los Angeles County Medical Center. Dr. Casteel had a family practice in Tustin, Calif., from 1962 to 1978, and in Bainbridge from 1978 to 1982, when he retired. He married Lorraine St. John on Jan. 9, 1954, in New Bedford, Mass. He served as a medical officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve. President of the University of Irvine, California College of Medicine Alumni Association, he was chief of staff at Tustin Community Hospital in 1972. He was past president of the Santa Ana Tustin 20/30 Club and past president of the Rolls Royce Owners Club of Southern California. Dr. Casteel loved music and played trombone in the Doctor's Dance Band; later he played bagpipes in the Cleveland Kilty Band. Other interests included the study of architecture, restoring classic cars, collecting miniature car models, family gatherings and mowing the grounds at his Ohio farm on his Kubota tractor. Dr. Casteel is survived by his wife; daughter, Suzanne (Ed) Wilson, of Houston; sons, James (Jackie) Jr., of Burlington, Ky., Patrick (Amy), of Phoenix, Ariz., Scott (Terri), of Fairfax, Va., and Rick Casteel, of Mill Valley, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Creed and Rose (nee Welcheck) Casteel; sisters, Laverne Hess and Dorothy Bartos; and brother, C. Lawrence Casteel. Funeral services were held May 25 at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Newbury, with burial in Newbury Center Cemetery.

Thomas R. Corn
Thomas R. Corn, 75, of Moreland Hills, died May 26 2002 in Cleveland. Born July 12, 1926, in Waterville, he received a B.S. in engineering from the University of Michigan in 1949, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu engineering honorary fraternities. A retired businessman, Mr. Corn was past president of Business Advisers of Cleveland and an active volunteer. He previously was involved with the American Heart Association, the Cleveland Plan and several engineering-related organizations. He enjoyed sailing, home remodeling and computers. Mr. Corn is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Kmetzko, of Cleveland Heights, and Janet Spaeth, of Miami; and son, Daniel Corn, of Hartsdale, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas K. and Helen M. (nee Jones) Corn; and his son, Thomas L. Corn. Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. May 31 at Church of the Resurrection, 32001 Cannon Road in Solon. Grayce J. Curtis
Grayce J. Curtis, 75, of Russell, died May 25 2002 at her home. Mrs. Curtis is survived by her husband, Anthony L. Curtis; son, Jeffrey (Brenda); daughters, Lisa Curtis and Kathleen Curtis-Rehmar (Ira); six grandchildren; and siblings, Margaret Boros, Louis Lengyel, Irma Medrick and Edward Lengyel. She was preceded in death by five siblings. Funeral services were held May 29 at the Federated Church in Chagrin Falls, with burial in All Saints Cemetery.

Marian H. Lackey

Marian H. Lackey (nee Hammond), of Chagrin Falls, was a retired elementary school teacher for the Mayfield school system. An expert in needlework, she was active with the Girl Scouts. Mrs. Lackey is survived by her children, Jane, of Toledo, Celia Gebhard, of Columbus, Susan, of Chagrin Falls, and David, of Lancaster, Calif.; grandchildren, Gregory and Sara; great-grandsons, Maxwell and Benjamin; and sister, Inis DeWalt. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Rodney P. Lackey; and siblings, Corin, Jeanette, Carl W. and Keith. All services were private. John J. Mueller
John J. Mueller, of Auburn, died May 21 2002 at his home. Born in Canton, he was self-employed in radio and marketing-communications, and the owner of several patents. A graduate of John Carroll University, Mr. Mueller served his country in the Korean War. Mr. Mueller is survived by his wife, Mary P. (nee Boggins); sons, John P., James (Judith), Mark (Donna) and Matthew (Melissa); and four grandchildren, Patrick, Michael, Stephanie and Natalie. Funeral Mass was said May 24 at St. Joan of Arc Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery in Canton. Salome E. Newton
Salome E. Newton, 99, of Bainbridge, former longtime resident of Bentleyville, died May 22 2002 at Burton Health Care Center. A member of Bainbridge Community United Church of Christ, she was one of the last members of the Mother's Club in Chagrin Falls. Mrs. Newton was a quilter who loved gardening and flowers and was known for her blueberries. She is survived by her sons, Richard (Julia), of Bainbridge, and Milton (Jeanne), of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren, Rebecca Stockton, Gregory Newton, Cheryl Robinson, Noelle Flaherty, all of Texas, Sue Newton, of Vermont, David Newton, of Florida, Salome Koenig, of Mantua, Julia Eggert, of Toledo, and Elizabeth Riley and Scott Newton, both of Dayton; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Gertrude (Warren) Mizer, of North Canton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Newton; son, David; three brothers and five sisters. Funeral services were held May 25 at Bainbridge Community Church, with burial in Dover Burial Park in Dover. Robert Ross
Robert "Bert" Ross, 88, of Chardon, died July 27 2002 at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital. Born in Scotland, on July 28, 1913, he came to Amsterdam, Ohio, by way of Canada in 1920, and lived in the Cleveland area after World War II before moving to Chardon in 1985. A construction worker at Humel Construction Co. in Warrensville Heights for 25 years, he retired in 1975. He also worked as a baker and routeman at Turbey's Bakery in Amsterdam from 1930 to 1942. Mr. Ross served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, including the European Theatre of Operations with the 605th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion. He enjoyed watching football, Cleveland Indians baseball and playing cards. Mr. Ross is survived by his dear friend, Thelma Fix, of Chardon; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Margaret (nee Demsey) Ross, in December 1983; parents, Robert and Annie (nee Wallace) Ross; brothers, Alec McClelland, Pete McClelland, John Ross and Jimmy Ross; and sisters, Bessie Falconer, Margaret Pech and Nancy Richardson. Graveside memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 3 at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon, where family will meet friends at the entrance to the cemetery.

Alex Koler
Alex Koler, 87, of Mentor and formerly of Willowick, died July 28 2002 at Lake Hospital Systems in Painesville. Born July 31, 1914, in Cleveland, he resided in Mentor since 1994. Mr. Koler is survived by his wife of 64 years, Annie (nee Marchuk); son, Alex (Donna) Koler, of Parma; daughters, Pat Koler, of Mentor, and Alice (Louis) Devorsky, of Chardon; grandchildren, Michael (Jayna) Koler, David (Christine) Koler, Jerry (Michelle) Koler, Ron (Lois) Devorsky and Dawn (Doug Francis) Devorsky; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Dr. Mark Koler; sister, Helen Morway; and brothers, Frank, Joe, Duke and Chester Kulengowski. Joan Allison
Joan Allison, 33, of Solon, died July 28 2002 at University Hospitals due to complications of seizures. Born July 9, 1969, she moved to Solon in 1975. A 1987 graduate of Solon High School, she was involved with show choir and drama and was a diver on the high school's swim team. She received her bachelor's degree in communications from Butler University in Indianapolis, and was a radio broadcaster in Hilton Head, S.C., for eight years prior to becoming a computer graphics technician. She enjoyed the hiking club with her father and choir at Federated Church in Chagrin Falls. Ms. Allison is survived by her parents, George L. and Marilyn (nee Johanning) Allison, of Solon; brother, Mark (Beth); and niece and nephew, Morgan and Andrew. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Aug. 1) at Kindrich-McHugh Steinbauer Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road in Solon. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Solon.

Robert J. Norwick
Robert James Norwick, 80, a 40-year resident of Moreland Hills, died July 25 2002. Born Aug. 3, 1921, in Cleveland, he was a 1939 graduate of Shaker Heights High School. Mr. Norwick received a B.A. in economics in 1943 and his M.B.A. in marketing in 1947 from the University of Michigan, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He received his law degree in 1958 from the Cleveland Marshall Law School, and married Mildred Loew following graduation. A corporate attorney at Pickands Mather & Co. for over 35 years, he retired as assistant secretary and assistant general counsel in 1983. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corp. After his discharge, he joined the Ohio Air National Guard and was called up during the Berlin Wall crisis. He retired from the National Guard as a colonel in 1965. An active member of the United Methodist Church of Chagrin Falls, the Cleveland chapter of Phi Gamma Delta and the Wellness Center, he also assisted the Sassy Cat for many years. Mr. Norwick is survived by his sons, Robert Jr. and William, of Moreland Hills; and his brother, Edmund Jr., formerly of Pepper Pike. He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie; sister, Ruth; and his parents. Memorial services were held July 29 at United Methodist Church of Chagrin Falls. Janis H. Horne
Janis "Jan" Horne (nee Hughes), 75, of Solon, died July 26 2002. A nationally known landscape artist, who began oil painting in her 50s, she was a self-taught artist who painted in an impressionistic style when depicting deserted ocean shores. Her most popular painting is a rendition of Henry's Bend, Verango County, Pa., located in a national park, highly prized for its wildlands, low lying trout streams, surrounding cabins and dense forests. She owned a vast library of books pertaining to painting. Mrs. Horne volunteered teaching oil painting to senior citizens in Solon and Warren. She formerly taught at her summer home in Pen Oak Acres near Warren. She had many commissions in several states and overseas, mainly in England, Scotland and Germany. Mrs. Horne is survived by her children, Robert (Margaret) Cooper, Ross C., Susan Terlizzi, Lee, Linda (Bill) Junker and Lester (Nancy); 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brother, Doland Hughes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross C. Horne; and siblings, Brenda and Wallace Hughes. Graveside services were held July 30 at Roselawn Cemetery in Solon.

William H. Barringer
William H. Barringer, 60, of Parkman, died Sept. 29 2002 at his home following a lingering illness. Born Sept. 26, 1942, in Columbus, he was a lifelong resident of the area. A 1961 graduate of Cardinal High School in Middlefield, he married Juanita Ames on March 16, 1968, in Hartsgrove. He worked at Geauga Industries, Newbury Industries and more recently, Mar-Bal in Auburn. A member of Abundant Life Church of God in Middlefield, his hobbies were reading, fishing, hunting, gardening and reading the Bible. Mr. Barringer is survived by his wife, Juanita; daughter, Denise (David) Zarack, of Painesville; granddaughter, Hannah; sisters, Anne Phillips, of Middlefield, and Edna Perry, of Oklahoma; brother, Arthur (Rebecca) Barringer, of Middlefield; step-brother, Daniel Popp, of Chardon; niece, Michele D. Mills, of Columbus; and nephews, Clarence, Curtis and Chad Tibbs, of Middlefield, and Jarod Blankenship, of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Thelma (nee Waterman) Barringer; and his stepmother, Bessie Barringer. Funeral services were held Oct. 2, and burial was in Middlefield Cemetery.
