Brooks R. Milgate Jr.
Brooks Richard "Dick" Milgate Jr., 75, a lifelong resident of Chardon Village, died Sept. 28 1999 at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital. Born Feb. 21, 1924, in Chardon Village, he was the son of Brooks R. and Christine (nee Burkeholder) Milgate Sr. He married Delphine Brothers in Chardon Village, on July 10, 1947. Mr. Milgate was a 1943 graduate of Chardon High School, where he had been active in football, baseball and thespians. He attended Fenn College (now Cleveland State University). Owner of the former Circle Maintenance in Chardon Village for over 25 years, he was an active member of Chardon area organizations including JayCees, Lions Club, Chardon Masonic Lodge, Ruby Chapter of Order of Eastern Star, "Summer Theatre" acting group and a Boy Scout Leader. An avid sports fan, he enjoying fishing, especially in Canada. He loved his God and studying the Bible. Mr. Milgate is survived by his wife, Delphine Milgate of Chardon Village; two daughters, Betsy (James) Cahill of East Amherst, N.Y., and Heather Milgate of Westlake; a son, Donald (Nancy) Milgate of Seattle; seven grandchildren, Skyeler, Hobson, Graham and Nolan Milgate and Megan, Erin and Cori Cahill; three sisters, Joanne (Fred) Koehler of Lilburn, Ga., Patricia (Robert) Holp of Concord and Janet Shoda of Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother, Thomas (Ruth Ann) Milgate of Chardon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Brooks R. and Christine (nee Burkeholder) Milgate Sr., and a brother, John Milgate. Funeral services were held Sept. 30 at Burr Funeral Home in Chardon Village. Interment was at Chardon Municipal Cemetery. Mary D. Vargo
Sister Mary Dolores Vargo, SND, 52, of Notre Dame Educational Center in Chardon, died Sept. 28 1999 at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital. She was a resident in the Health Care Center at Notre Dame Educational Center since 1998. Born July 10, 1947, in Youngstown, the daughter of John and Margaret (nee Hamilton) Vargo, she was an elementary school teacher and principal in Cleveland, Massillon and Youngstown areas since 1969. She is survived by her mother, Margaret Vargo of Youngstown; sister, Margaret (Thomas) Williams; brother, John (Debra) Vargo; and the congregation of Sisters of Notre Dame with whom she shared her life for 33 years. She was preceded in death by her father, John Vargo. Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 2 at Notre Dame Educational Center in Chardon. Interment was at Resurrection Cemetery, Provincial House Grounds in Chardon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame, Notre Dame Educational Center, 13000 Auburn Road, Chardon 44024.

Samuel K. Taylor
Samuel K. Taylor, 77, of Claridon Township, died Sept. 29 1999 at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital. Born April 12, 1922, in Cleveland, he was a resident of Claridon for 23 years, prior in Cleveland. Mr. Taylor married Joan Pfeifer in Cleveland Heights, on June 15, 1946. A mechanical engineer for the former Technicare of Solon for 44 years, he retired in 1986. He was a graduate of University School in Cleveland, and in 1944 graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Mr. Taylor was known as the father of the mechanical aspects of CAT Scan Imaging and was instrumental in the development of the MRI Medical Imaging and patient lift chairs. A very creative person, he was the owner of several patents. A member of the Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, he enjoyed woodworking and carving and maintaining the family farm. A veteran of World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army. Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Joan (nee Pfeifer) Taylor of Claridon Township; daughters, Janet (Richard) Lichtkoppler of Denver, Carolyn (David) Thum of Lakewood, Joan (Gordon) Cikra of Bay Village and Barbara (Trent) Anderson of Burton; brother, William R. Taylor of Dunedin, Fla.; and grandchildren, Christopher, Emily and Julie Cikra of Bay Village and Jennifer, Claire, Hallie, Grace and Samuel Anderson of Burton. He was preceded in death by his parents, William R. and Katherine (nee Kelley) Taylor; and a sister, Katherine Anderson. Funeral services were held Oct. 3 at Wade Chapel in Lakeview Cemetery where he was buried. Memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, NEO Chapter, Westpoint Corp. Clarice A. Eaton
Clarice A. Eaton, 90, of Middlefield, formerly a 60-year resident of Newbury, died April 5 1999 at Milestones Adult Group Home in Bainbridge. She was born June 9, 1908, in Cleveland, and she was a charter member of Newbury Flames. Mrs. Eaton is survived by her son, Grant F. of Newbury; grandchildren, Lisa Eichembaum of Chagrin Falls, Shaunn Frink of Fort Myers, Fla., Thomas of Elk River, Minn., Paul of Middlefield, and Ellen Mingus of Athens; sisters, Eleanore Marx of Maple Heights and Hermia Reinhold of Covina, Calif.; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grant; son, Gordon; brother, Roy McMillian; and sisters, Thelma Abram and Lucille Alexander. Funeral gathering was held on April 10 at the Newbury Fire Station meeting room. The family requests no flowers. Memorial donations may be given to Newbury Fire Department.

Mary J. Royer
Mary Jennings Royer, of Chagrin Falls, died April 13 1999. She was born in Virginia, Oct. 20, 1912. She married John H. Royer Jr. on June 18, 1932. He preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1995. Mrs. Royer was a professional photographer, a member of the Trisdale Boys Home Board, active member of the American Polled Hereford Association, Howard County (Maryland) Hunt Club, Christ Church in Glendower, Va., and renowned design seamstress. More recently she was a member of the Federated Church in Chagrin Falls. She is survived by two sons, Bob Royer of Cleveland and Bill of Bethlehem, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Bob, Dan, Katie and Stacey. Four other boys were like sons, Cary Malkus of Preston, Md., Lonnie Malkus of Bosman, Md., Richard Virgilio of San Diego, and the late Walter Matthews, of Kildeer, Ill. Memorial services were held April 17 at Christ Church in Glendower, Va. Interment followed in the church cemetery. A memorial service will be held on May 6 at the Federated Church in Chagrin Falls. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Cleveland Ohio American Cancer Society.

Jean K. Jaken
Jean K. Jaken, 81, of Bainbridge, died April 8 1999 at Kent Quality Care Nursing Center. She was born Nov. 4, 1917 in East Liverpool, the daughter of Edward and Eva Arnold. A 1935 graduate of East Liverpool High School, she graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in 1938 and returned to East Liverpool to work as a nurse for an obstetrician. Mrs. Jaken joined American Red Cross and in 1942 joined the U.S. Army Nursing Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant and served in England during World War II. Following her discharge, she enrolled at Western Reserve University Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, graduating in 1948. There she met her husband, Harry Jaken, and they lived in Bedford from 1950 to 1969. She obtained a teacher's certificate and taught at St. Mary Elementary School in Bedford from 1955 to 1969. In 1970, they moved to Bainbridge and she was the supervisor of nursing for the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District until she retired in 1990. Mrs. Jaken is survived by her husband of 51 years, Harry J. Jaken; a daughter, Deborah (Dr. Haleem) El-Dabh of Kent; grandson, Habeeb; and brother, Frank Arnold of Cleveland Heights. A memorial Mass was celebrated April 17 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Bedford.

Lester W. Coster
Lester W. Coster, 81, of Twinsburg and formerly of Solon, died April 17 1999. He was born Sept. 11, 1917, in West Farmington, where he was raised. Mr. Coster worked as a fireman on a steamship of the Pittsburgh Steamship Co. in the late 1930s. He was a millman for Packard Electric Division of General Motors before entering the U.S. Army in 1941. He served his country during World War II in the 819th Signal Service Company as a First Sargent in the Normandy and North France Campaigns. He was a cook and baker. Mr. Coster was a tool and die maker, working for Ford Motor Co. in the late '40s and then Chrysler Corp. for 30 years until he retired in 1986. While in the service, he married Emma Gum. They were married for 49 years until her death in 1991. Mr. Coster enjoyed playing Santa Claus for several years at Solon City Hall in the late '50s and early '60s. He was a life member of the Solon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1863, AARP, and the N.E.S.C.A. (Senior Anglers Club) located in Twinsburg. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, cooking and caring for his family. Mr. Coster is survived by his daughters, Sandra Coster, Pamela Leach of Georgia, Denice Coster, Anita Twarogowski; sons, Charles Coster, Michael Coster and Mark Coster, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and a brother, Gene Coster. He was preceded in death by his wife Emma; daughter, Melissa; three sisters and a brother. Memorial services were held April 20 at Tabone Funeral Home in Solon. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Robert L. Bailey
Robert Lewis Bailey, 72, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and formerly of Cleveland, died on Christmas Day 1999 due to complications of heart disease and diabetes. Known to his grandchildren as "RB," he was born July 17, 1926, in Cleveland, and raised in Cleveland Heights. A graduate of Western Reserve Academy, he served his country during World War II in the Naval Air Corps. At the end of the war, he attended Oberlin College and received a degree in business administration from Colorado College in 1950. Mr. Bailey was regional sales manager for Glastic Corp. in South Euclid, now part of the Tremco Corp., for 17 years. For four years he was a manufacturers representative for vibratory finishing machines and suppliers to the metal working industry. He relocated to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and entered the hotel management field. Nearly 20 years ago, he moved to the Charleston area to pursue part-time sales opportunities. He loved the beaches and ocean, fishing and golfing. Mr. Bailey is survived by his children, Robert A. Bailey of Chagrin Falls, Janet Bailey Cubbage of Greenville, S.C., and Donald H. Bailey of Savannah, Ga.; four grandchildren, Leigh Ann, Kristin, Jimmy and Bryce; special friend, Gail Davis of Folly Beach, S.C.,; and three brothers, Richard C. Bailey of Houston, David B. Bailey of Cleveland and Douglas L. Bailey of Washington, D.C. Calling hours are 7-9 p.m. April 30 at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. May 1 at United Methodist Church of Chagrin Falls. Robert P. Ullman
Robert P. Ullman, 70, of Bainbridge, died at his residence on April 19 1999. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 18, 1928, and was a resident of Bainbridge for the past 33 years. A graduate of the American University in Washington, D.C., with a bachelor of arts degree, he founded Bob Ullman Inc. (now Ullman Oil) in 1966 and retired from the company in 1986. Today, the company is a diversified petroleum distributor with divisions supplying heating oil, fuel and lubricants statewide. A veteran of the Korean War, he served his country in the U.S. Army. An avid boater, he was Past Commodore of the Perrysburg Boat Club. He also served on the board of directors of Geauga Regional Hospital, and was a council member for Mobil Oil's National Distribution Advisory Council. He was a member of the Chagrin Camera Club and Chagrin Valley Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Ullman is survived by his wife, Marilyn; two sons, Ken S. (Mary) Ullman and Kim (Kim) Ullman; a daughter, Karen (Wayne) Murray, all of Chagrin Falls; and grandchildren, Laryn, Lindsay, Logan, Laurel, Dreen, Cody, Luke and Ross. Visitation hours will be from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. tomorrow (April 23) at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home, 95 S. Franklin St., Chagrin Falls. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday (April 25) at Valley Presbyterian Church, 17560 Chillicothe Road in Bainbridge. Private burial will be held at Restland Cemetery in Bainbridge. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Cleveland 44119.

Marietta V. Jackson
Marietta V. Jackson, 101, died Oct. 30 1999 at Western Reserve Nursing Home in Kirtland. She was born in Newbury, on April 11, 1898, and was a lifelong resident of Chagrin Falls. She grew up in Newbury and attended the former one-room schoolhouse on Munn Road called Bloody Woods School. She used to ride a horse to school. A member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Faithful Few, a ladies aid club of Chagrin Falls, she enjoyed knitting sweaters and crocheting Afghans. She worked for the former Merriman's Grocery Store which was on North Franklin Street in Chagrin Falls, and later for the former Brewster and Church Co., a department store also on North Franklin Street. If she would have lived until the millennium, she would have lived in parts of three centuries. She is survived by a son, Robert W. Jackson, and a grandson, Andrew R. Jackson, both of Chagrin Falls. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1974. Graveside services were held Wednesday at Evergreen Hill Cemetery.

Richard L. Cadwell
Richard L. Cadwell, 70, of Chagrin Falls, died Oct. 30 1999 following a long illness. Mr. Cadwell lived with his daughter, Regina Giordano; son-in-law, Joseph Larkins Jr.; and grandchildren, David and Brittany Giordano. Private graveside services for the family were held at Hillside Cemetery.

Ruth L. Patterson
Ruth L. Patterson, 80, of Moreland Hills, died Oct. 29 1999 at Somerset Pointe Nursing Facility. She had Alzheimers. Born July 27, 1919, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of George C. and Mary Anna Lindsey. A graduate of Ohio University, she taught business education at Solon High School for 10 years and worked in the legal division USAF at Wright Field in Dayton for four years. A member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, she enjoyed swimming, gardening and cooking. Mrs. Patterson is survived by her husband, Clyde A. Patterson; and children, Claire Gebben of Mercer Island, Wash., Craig Patterson of Melbourne, Ky., Anna Lindsey of Cleveland Heights, and Elizabeth Lindsey of East Lansing, Mich. She was preceded in death by her son, Clyde A. Patterson III. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. tonight (Nov. 4) at Church of the Western Reserve, 30500 Fairmount Blvd., Pepper Pike. Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of Church of the Western Reserve, 30500 Fairmount Blvd., Pepper Pike 44124.

Harold R. Keller
Harold R. Keller, 93, of Solon, died Oct. 27 1999 at Meridia Hillcrest Hospital following a three-day stay from intestinal failure. Born in Anon, N.Y., he moved to Cleveland in 1918 and graduated from Glenville High School. He married LaVerne (nee Beerer) in 1931 and lived in Solon ever since. He worked for Ohio Bell Telephone Co. for 45 years, retiring as a controller in the accounting department. He loved to golf and bowl, and certainly loved to watch all sporting events. Mr. Keller is survived by his wife, LaVerne; son, Lowell R. (Kirsten) Keller; daughter Carol M. (late Charles) Holub; grandchildren, Dennis (Cindy), David (Cindy), Darrell (Cathy), Douglas, Donald (Patti), Daniel (Heidi), and Dale (Kim) Holub, Susan Simunich, Debra, Teri and Donald Keller; 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Gladys Keller and Edna Colburn. Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, who benefited greatly from Mr. Keller's dedication and service, held memorial services on Oct. 30. Interment was in Roselawn Cemetery in Solon. Marjorie L. Freeman
Marjorie L. Freeman (nee Judd), 92, of Columbus, died Oct. 25 1999 at Riverside Hospital in Columbus. Born Jan. 27, 1907, in South Harpersfield, she was formerly of Chardon Township, prior in Hernando, Fla. She married Shirley Wilbur Freeman Feb. 18, 1941, in Willoughby. He preceded her in death Aug. 14, 1989. A graduate of Andrew School for Girls in Willoughby, she was a longtime member of the Chardon United Methodist Church. Mrs. Freeman was a former Sunday School teacher, Brownie Scout Leader and member of the Pythian Sisters. Mrs. Freeman is survived by her daughters, Judith (Don) Goldberg of Columbus, Joyce (Richard) Stifel of South Bend, Ind., and Janet (Dustin) Redmond of Marion; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kim) Kelly of Athens, Andrew (Amy) Kelly of Columbus, Megan Stifel of Washington, D.C., and Judd and Allison Redmond of Marion; a great-grandchild, Matthew Kelley of Athens; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Millie (nee Bigelow) Judd; husband, Shirley Wilbur Freeman; sisters, Lulu Otto, Addie Whipple, Minta Yager and Etta McBride; and brothers, Lloyd Judd, Clifford Judd and Elmer Judd. Funeral services were held Oct. 29 at the Chapel at the Chardon United Methodist Church. Burial was in Chesterland Cemetery. Richard L. Rarick
Richard L. Rarick, 83, of Chardon Village, died Oct. 27 1999 at Burton Health Care. Born April 29, 1916, in Chardon, he was a lifelong resident. He married Erma Eiler in his parent's home in Chardon Village on Oct. 21, 1938. A custodian for the Chardon Local Schools, he retired in 1988. Mr. Rarick served his country in World War II as a U.S. Navy Merchant Marine armed guard services. He had worked at the Junction Tavern, was a lineman for Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. and was part owner of Hill's Hardware in Burton Village. A 50-year member of Chardon United Methodist Church and a former member of the Chardon Volunteer Fire Department, he formerly owned his own painting and cleaning contracting business for 10 years. Following retirement, he and his wife enjoyed going to their cottage in Canada. Mr. Rarick is survived by his wife, Erma Rarick of Chardon Village; daughters, Dixie (Brad) Ryan of Mentor and Donna (John) Kulisek of Chardon Village; son, Kenneth (Norma) Rarick of Chardon Township; grandchildren, Scott (Samantha) Hildenbrand of Hambden Township, Wendy Morford of California, Edwin (Lisa) Kulisek of California, Deborah Kulisek of Chardon Village and Melissa and Amy Rarick of Chardon Township; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Myrtle (nee Wilber) Rarick; and brother, Clyde Rarick. Funeral services were held Oct. 30 at Burr Funeral Home in Chardon Village. Burial was in Chardon Municipal Cemetery.
