Dorothy B. Hosford
Dorothy Beech Hosford, 97, of Chardon Township, died Oct. 30 1999 at Chardon Center in Chardon Village. Born May 10, 1902, in Warren, she was a 79-year resident of Chardon. She married Lynn H. Hosford on July 31, 1920, in Cleveland. Following their honeymoon, they resided in the Hosford home on Ravenna Road, which the family had occupied since 1869, living there until her health failed. The Hosfords were some of the first settlers in Geauga County, arriving in 1818. She was the last member of the family living in the area, bringing to a close an era in the county. A graduate of Chardon High School, Class of 1920, she served as class president. She recognized that position as a lifetime office gathering and officiating at the annual reunion for 72 years, until the last in 1992 when two classmates met for ice cream and cake. (She was the last surviving member). At 16, she was the organist for the Pilgrim Christian Church in Chardon, and often accompanied local performers. A writer of poetry, she also kept a daily diary for 63 years. Following her 80th birthday, she developed a new talent, composing several songs of love. Three of these will be used during her funeral service. She served on the Chardon Election Board for many years. She was a member of the Pilgrim Christian Church. Mrs. Hosford is survived by two sons, Lynn H. Hosford Jr., USAF Retired (late Margaret) of Sun City West, Ariz., and Gregory F. (June) Hosford of Salt Lake City; eight grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn H. Hosford Sr. in 1988; parents, George H. and Evelyn (nee Pickering) Beech; sisters, Hazel Beech and Mildred Christian; and two brothers, Lester and Leslie Beech. Funeral services were held Nov. 6 at Burr Funeral Home in Chardon Village. Burial was in Chardon Municipal Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Music Fund of the Pilgrim Christian Church, 202 S. Hambden St., Chardon 44024.

Della M. Townsend
Della Marie Townsend (nee Rhodes), 91, of Painesville, died Oct. 31 1999 at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital. Born Feb. 2, 1908, in Leroy, she was a lifelong resident of Painesville. A laborer for the former Ohio Rubber Manufacturing of Willoughby for 30 years, she retired in 1972. Mrs. Townsend is survived by her son, Ray (Barbara) Townsend of Montville; sisters, Hilda White of Roswell, N.M., and Cecile Grundman of Mentor; grandchildren, Ray (Bonnie) Townsend of Huntsburg, Kenneth (Mary) Townsend of Montville, Marie (Claude) Sutterline of Harpersfield, Judi (Gary) Minshall of Madison, Katherine Townsend of Painesville, Richard Townsend of Madison and Linda (Kevin) Huxley of Painesville; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Carrie (nee Strong) Rhodes; son, Richard Townsend; brothers, Lee and Richard Rhodes; and sister, Veda Cermak. Funeral services were held Nov. 3 at Burr Funeral Home in Chardon Village. Burial was in Montville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity.

Lewis R. Bostwick
Lewis R. Bostwick, owner of Bostwick's Hardware Store in Chardon, died Nov. 2 1999. He was 85. Mr. Bostwick was born Sept. 8, 1914, in Chardon. Mr. Bostwick took over his father Robert's business in 1940, and by 1956, moved the store to Chardon Plaza. He acquired Chardon Hardware in 1964 and remained actively involved in the business until his death. Mr. Bostwick and his wife Rose were married in 1943. They met while students at Western Reserve University. Mr. Bostwick was also a graduate of Western Reserve Academy in Hudson. He was a trustee at Chardon Savings Bank, a member for many years of the Rotary Club and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. In 1992, Mr. Bostwick was honored by the Chardon Chamber of Commerce as Business Person of the Year. An avid golfer, he shot a hole-in-one at Legand Lakes Golf Club. Mr. Bostwick is survived by his wife, Rose; children, Barbara Hahl of Florida, Peter of Columbuis Station, Jane of Chardon, and Robert of Shaker Heights; and a brother, George of North Carolina; and Barbara Williamson of California. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Frances; and a brother, Thomas. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today (Nov. 5) at the Church of St. Mary, 401 North St., Chardon. The family suggests memorial contributions to Heather Hill Hospital Health and Care Center, 12340 Bass Lake Road, Chardon 44024, where Mr. Bostwick served for more than 25 years as a trustee.

Irene A. Olenik
Irene A. Olenik (nee Lutheran), 81, of Solon, died May 22 2000. She was a member of St. Rita Church in Solon. Mrs. Olenik is survived by her husband, Joseph B.; children, J. Michael of Omaha, Neb., Thomas C. of Solon and Charles A. (Michelle) of Lyndhurst; grandchildren, Michael, Melissa and Matthew; sister, Mary Pimpo; cousin, Matilda Szell; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Rose Bodis Lutheran; and sister, Margaret Rajnak. Funeral Mass was celebrated May 24 at St. Rita Church in Solon. Interment was in Roselawn Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to a charity of choice.

Nina L. Sacco
Nina L. Sacco (nee LoSurdo), of Solon, died May 22 2000. Born in Messina, Italy, she immigrated to Syracuse, N.Y., with her family as a child. A graduate of Henninger High School and State University College at Oswego, N.Y., she worked for over 10 years in the computer center at SUNY Oswego as an operations manager and programmer/analyst. She and her family moved to Solon in 1989. A volunteer for the American Cancer Society as a Renu and Reach to Recovery volunteer, she was a model in the American Cancer Society annual fashion show in 1995. Mrs. Sacco is survived by her husband, David A.; daughter, Margaret Marie; son, David Michael, all of Solon; sisters, Josephine Crisafulli of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and Ellie LoSurdo Clines of Omaha, Neb.; and mother, Flora LoSurdo of Liverpool, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her father, Frank LoSurdo. Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, 10819 Magnolia Drive, Cleveland 44106. Funeral services and burial were held in Syracuse, N.Y.

Bruce M. Fleming
Bruce M. Fleming, 61, of Solon, died May 25 2000 at his home from lung cancer. Born in Elizabeth, N.J., he was the son of Lester Funk and Dorothy Minerd. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Fleming was a brick layer and a car salesman. Mr. Fleming is survived by his wife, Dorothy Carbone Fleming; daughters, Kathy Carbone and Kim (Drew) Meckstroth of Athens; brother, Neal; and cousin, Robert (Evelyn) Orwig.

Joseph B. Stickney
Joseph Burns Stickney, 80, of Chagrin Falls, died May 26 2000 at Grande Village Nursing Home in Twinsburg. Born July 14, 1919, in Cleveland, the son of Isaac M. and Alicia B. Stickney, he resided in Chagrin Falls since 1965. Mr. Stickney attended Lakewood Schools and received degrees from both Adelbert College, where he was president of Delta Upsilon and editor of the yearbook, and Case School of Applied Science. He also attended Harvard Business School. During World War II, he was a naval officer working on radar at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. In 1945, he worked at Victoreen developing X-ray measurement instruments and became chief engineer. He joined Picker X-Ray Corp. in 1953. At Picker, he was instrumental in the development of the cobalt 60 radiation therapy product line, the nuclear instrument products and the C.T. scanner. He was elected vice president and technical director of the company and retired in 1982. Mr. Stickney is survived by his wife, Del Benson Stickney; son, William of Seattle; granddaughters, Kait Stickney and Heather Carl, of Seattle; and brothers, F. Hamilton of Lakewood and John M. of Rocky River. A memorial service was held May 30 at Lake View Cemetery's Wade Chapel. Anne G. Buklad
Anne G. Buklad, 84, of Chagrin Falls, died May 26 2000 at Hillcrest Hospital. Born June 13, 1915, in Cleveland, she was a graduate of Lake Erie College in Painesville in 1940. A high school physical education teacher most of her life, she taught at Villa Angela in Cleveland, Kenston High School in Bainbridge, West Geauga High School in Chester and Solon High School. She retired in 1977. Mrs. Buklad is said to be the first female lifeguard in the City of Cleveland. She swam in the Great Lakes Exposition Aquacade in 1937 in the synchronized swimming category. She also participated in the Civilian Pilot Training program during World War II at Lost Nation Airport. Mrs. Buklad is survived by her daughters, Naomi (Michael) Brenner of Birmingham, Ala., and Mary Anne Williamson of Salem, Mass.; sons, James (Pam) Buklad of Euclid, William Buklad of Arlington, Va., and Paul (Linda) Buklad of Hudson; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred J. Buklad in 1984. Funeral Mass was celebrated May 31 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Chagrin Falls. William J. Butler
William J. "Bill" Butler, 66, of Findlay, died May 23 2000 at Banchard Valley Regional Health Center from natural causes. Born Nov. 25, 1933, in Chagrin Falls, the son of William and Mona (nee Lewis) Butler, he married Judith Kick on June 21, 1958. A 1952 graduate of Chagrin Falls High School, Mr. Butler received a bachelor of science in education from Ohio University in 1957; and a master of arts degree in administration from John Carroll University in 1965. He was the Superintendent of Liberty-Benton Local Schools, having retired in 1991, and Director of Field Experiences at the University of Findlay, retiring in 1998. A member of Norcrest Presbyterian Church, he served as an Elder, Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir and played trombone with the Instrumental Praise Team. Mr. Butler was a Mason in Findlay associated with Lodge 227, Free and Accepted Masons, Chapter 58 Royal Arch Masons, Council 50 Royal and Select Masons and Commandery 49 Knight Templar.He was also a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo. Past president of the AARP Blanchard Valley Chapter, he was also a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, Findlay Radio Club, University of Findlay Concert Chorale and a member of the Flag City Band, Night Jazz Band, Findlay Chamber Brass and Lion Rampant Bagpipe Band. Mr. Butler is survived by his wife, Judith; sons, William Scott Butler of Novato, Calif., Christopher Karl Butler of Chicago and Robert Kramer Butler of Chicago; father, William Butler of Aurora; and brother, Robert Butler of Reynoldsburg. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mona (nee Lewis) Butler. Funeral services were held May 27 at Norcrest Presbyterian Church, with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery in Findlay. Eugene P. Terbizan
Eugene P. "Terp" Terbizan, 77, of Russell and formerly of Chester, died May 28 2000 at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights. He was a maintenance foreman for 59 years with Cres-Cor in Mentor, formerly Crescent Metal Products in Cleveland. Mr. Terbizan enjoyed gardening, dog breeding and showing, bowling and roller skating. He is survived by his daughter, Donna J. Terbizan; sons, Robert N. and Thomas E. (Robin); grandchildren, Mary Allison, Bradley Robert and John Eugene; and sister, Dora Donavon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Ruth Terbizan; sister, Ailene F. Terbizan; and son, Joseph Terbizan. Doraine W. Baxter
Doraine W. Baxter, 68, of Twinsburg, died May 26 2000 at her home from matastic cancer. Born Feb. 19, 1932, in Toronto, Canada, she was the daughter of Alfred and Winnifred Smurdon Cunningham. A college graduate, she was an accountant. Mrs. Baxter is survived by her daughters, Kathryn (Bill) Zoul of North Royalton and Monica B. of Maple Heights; sons, Robert of Twinsburg and James of Solon; grandchildren, Nicole, Andrea, Nicholas and Jaime; and sister, Barbara Ruttle of Canada. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter John Baxter. Ryan D. Branthoover
Ryan David Branthoover, 20, of Chardon Township, died May 27 2000 at University Hospitals Health System Geauga Regional Hospital. Born Feb. 2, 1980, in Mayfield Heights, he was a 20-year resident of Chardon Township. A 1999 graduate of Chardon High School, he was a laborer for B&B Excavating in Mentor for one year. A member of the Church of St. Mary in Chardon, he enjoyed outdoor activities including off-road motorcycle racing and target shooting. He was an avid Cleveland Browns fan. Mr. Branthoover is survived by his father, Gary Branthoover of Chardon Township; brother, Todd Branthoover of Chardon Township; grandmother, Margaret Branthoover of Kirtland; and grandfather, Jack Roeder of Solon. He was preceded in death by his mother, Susan (nee Roeder) Branthoover in August 1996; grandmother, Betty Roeder; and grandfather, David Branthoover. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated yesterday at Church of St. Mary in Chardon Village. Burial was in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township. Charles E. Rigot
Charles E. Rigot, 79, of Mentor, died May 24 2000. Born Oct. 8, 1920, in Steubenville, he is survived by his wife, Martha (nee Dravage) Rigot of Mentor; step-daughter, Audrey (Robert) Milmine of Munson; step-son, Leo (Connie) Mott of Dallas; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five sisters. Mark Sperry
Mark Sperry, 91, of Hambden Township, died May 28 2000 at his home. Born July 25, 1908, in Middlefield Village, he was a lifelong Geauga County resident. A 1926 graduate of Chardon High School and 1930 graduate of Western Reserve Law School (now Case Western Reserve University School of Law), he was an attorney at law in Chardon Village for 60 years with the firm of Newton B. Chapman and Mark Sperry, prior to his retirement in 1990. He married Matilde Aguirre on May 17, 1945. She preceded him in death Sept. 20, 1973. He then married Agnes Sojka in Hambden Township. A veteran of World War II, he was a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Navy, having served in Europe and Africa commanding a naval liberty ship. Following the war, he served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Mr. Sperry served as Dean of the Geauga County Bar Association from 1975 to 1995, Commissioner of the Geauga County Park District, Founder of the Geauga County Public Library and board member of the Geauga County Historical Society. A member of the Geauga County Syrup Makers Hall of Fame, he ran a Sugar Bush in Parkman, on property owned by the family since 1874. He sponsored a 4-H exchange student, Susy Rodriguez, in 1993. In 1994, Mr. Sperry was elected to the Chardon High School Alumni Hall of Fame. He was also Historian "Emeritus" of Geauga County. Mr. Sperry is survived by his wife, Agnes (nee Sojka) Sperry of Hambden Township; step-son, Steven L. (Patti) Sperry of Madison; granddaughter, Lisa Ann (Frank) Mauric of Broadview Heights; Rosebud Sperry; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his first wife, Matilde (nee Aguirre) Sperry, he was preceded in death by his parents, Judge Harlan and Mae (nee Horton) Sperry, who was a teacher at Chardon Local Schools; and a brother, Richard Sperry. Memorial services were held May 31 at Pilgrim Christian Church in Chardon Village. Burial was in Chardon Municipal Cemetery in Chardon Village. Paul R. Sultzbach
Paul R. Sultzbach, 55, of Solon, died Aug. 4 2000 from an apparent heart attack. Born Dec. 17, 1944, in Bridgeport, Conn., he lived in Connecticut, California and New Hampshire before he moved to Solon in 1992. A graduate of San Luis Obispo Poly Technical University, he held a masters in business administration. Mr. Sultzbach married Donna (nee Horton) on Dec. 2, 1983. Vice president of sales for the Lilly Software Co. & Associates, he often traveled to areas in Asia and the Pacific. His hobby was his children and he enjoyed coaching recreation leagues in their interested sports. He also loved to fly and had a private pilot license. A member of Fellowship Bible Church, he loved God and was an elder and involved in youth ministries. Mr. Sultzbach is survived by his wife, Donna of Solon; children, Melissa Jellen-Angert, Christopher Jellen, Nicole Sultzbach and Amy Sultzbach; his father, Paul R. Sultzbach of Mazula, Mont., and his mother, Jeanne Hubert, of California; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services were held Aug. 8 at Fellowship Bible Church in Bainbridge. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery in Solon. Memorial contributions may be made to Fellowship Bible Church Youth Facility, 16391 Chillicothe Road, Chagrin Falls 44023, or the Paul R.
