Frank W. Dyrcz
Frank Walter Dyrcz, 82, of Chardon, died Aug. 1 2001 at his home. Born Jan. 17, 1919, in the Tremont area of Cleveland, he was the fourth of eight children born to Michael and Victoria (nee Bury) Dyrcz. In 1921, the family moved to southern Poland near Krakow. On Sept. 1, 1939, while on the way to market, he heard the first waves of Nazi planes bomb Krakow. He spent six months as an American dependent in occupied Poland. In March 1940, the American Embassy was closing and he was ordered to return to the United States. He lived in Chardon with his brother, Joseph, before joining the Civilian Conservation Corps in Burns, Ore. Mr. Dyrcz served in the U.S. Army as a medic with the Ohio 37th Infantry Division. During World War II, he served in the Southwestern-Pacific Theatre in Guadalcanal, Soloman Islands and Russell Islands. Wounded by shrapnel, he also suffered from malaria. For his service, he received the Purple Heart. Discharged in 1944, he enrolled in Moler Barber College in Cleveland. A barber in Chardon since 1945, he worked at Duke's Barber Shop on Main Street and trained Journeyman Barbers. He married Alice Pogorzelski on June 23, 1945, at St. Mary's Church in Orwell. A Chardon landlord, he brought the first Dairy Queen to Chardon as the co-founder in 1961. Mr. Dyrcz was a founding member and past commander of the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 161 in Chardon. In 1971, he organized and became a founding member of the Polish National Alliance 3915 of Chardon. He was a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 6519 of Chardon and St. Mary's Church in Chardon. He enjoyed all outdoor sports activities, especially duck and pheasant hunting and fishing. Mr. Dyrcz is survived by his wife 56 years, Alice (nee Pogorzelski); sons, Rev. Father Michael Dyrcz, of St. Barbara's Church in Cleveland, and Frank A. Dyrcz, of Chardon; grandchildren, Amber Phillips, Frank Dyrcz and Barbara Dyrcz; sisters, Helen, Frances and Anna (Michael), all of Poland; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph, Stanislaw and Zygmunt; and his sister, Maria. Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 4 at St. Mary's Church in Chardon with his son, Rev. Michael Dyrcz officiating. Burial was in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon.

Edward W. Brose
Edward W. Brose, 86, of Solon and Clearwater, Fla., died Aug. 2 2001 at Aurora Manor. Mr. Brose is survived by his wife, Charlotte; daughter, Brenda J. (Edward) Toomey; and granddaughter, Rhonda Esparza. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Daniel Toomey. Private funeral services were held.

Lloyd L. Walters
Lloyd L. Walters, 80, of Chagrin Falls, died Aug. 5 2001 at Emerald Ridge in Solon. Born July 30, 1921, in Cleveland, he attended the former Fenn College. A certified public accountant most of his life, he was a senior partner in the accounting firm of Meaden and Moore Ltd. in Cleveland. Retired from this position, he kept working as a consultant until his death. Mr. Walters was a veteran of World War II, having served for five years in the U.S. Navy. A member of the American Legion and the Cleveland Chapter of the Ohio Society of CPA's, he was a active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Solon. He loved golf, traveling and sailing, but most of all spending time following his grandson's sports programs at high school and college. Mr. Walters is survived by his wife of 52 years, Audrey (nee Lingelbach) Walters; sons, Reed (Mary Echle) and Timothy (Andrea); daughters, Lynne Walters and Leslie (Robert) Pressnell; and two grandchildren, Jonathan Pressnell and Matthew Walters. Funeral services were held Aug. 8 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 7196 SOM Center Road, Solon, 44139.

Katherine Hill
Katherine M. Hill, 87, of Chagrin Falls, died Oct. 28 2001 at her home. Formerly of Warren, she lived in Chagrin Falls for many years. Mrs. Hill is survived by a stepdaughter, Cheryl Hill, and a stepson, Gary Hill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Hill, in 1991.

Marie L. Kierspel
Marie L. Kierspel, 74, of Solon, died Nov. 3 2001 in Solon. A housewife, she attended school in Germany. She is survived by her husband, Herbert; and sons, Gary, of Solon, and Herbert William, of Twinsburg.

Glen O. Smith Jr.
Glen Owen Smith Jr., 80, of Chagrin Falls, died Oct. 29 2001 at his home. Born Sept. 28, 1921, he graduated cum laude in 1939 from University School and magna cum laude in 1943 from Yale University and received his law degree in 1948 from Yale Law School. He joined his father's practice at Smith & Smith where he specialized in labor law. Later his brother joined the firm and it became Smith, Smith & Smith, until July 1, 1974, when they merged with Speith, Bell, McCurdy & Newell. He was honored with a plaque of appreciation from his adversaries for his tough and fair negotiation style. In 1957, Mr. Smith served on the Shaker Heights City Council. The last president of the Forest City Investment Club in 1953, he was an active member of the Pine Lake Trout Club, the Union Club, the Saint Bernard Fish & Game Club and the Bay Hill Country Club. For many years he was a partner in Night Town, Raintree and Watership Down restaurants. At Raintree in Chagrin Falls, many still consider him "family." Mr. Smith enjoyed fishing in the West with his sons and friend, William McDonald. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Lee Smith, of Eureka, Calif.; sons, Glen O. (Denise) III, or Orlando, Fla., and Scott C. Smith, of Woodland Hills, Calif.; brother, Mark A. Smith, of Shaker Heights; granddaughters, Justine Tallmadge Smith and Rebecca Jeane Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeane C. Smith (nee Carpenter); and his sister, Patricia Jennings Schrieber. Memorial services were held Nov. 6 at Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights. Emerson A. Cooper
Emerson A. "Jack" Cooper, 73, of Sun City, S.C., and formerly of Russell, died Nov. 2 2001 at his home. Born Nov. 4, 1927, in Killbuck, he was a resident of Geauga County for over 30 years before moving to Sun City two years ago. Mr. Cooper attended Hiram College and John Carroll University. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army. Retired sales manager for Lincoln St. Louis in Ohio after 23 years of service, he spent 12 years with B.W. Rogers Co. in Akron, where he received international recognition with the "Distinguished Sales and Marketing Award" from Sales and Market Executives International. While his children were in school, Mr. Cooper spent eight years as a member of the West Geauga Board of Education. He was a member of the West Geauga Fathers' Club, and president of the West Geauga Recreation Council, where he was instrumental in planning and building a swimming pool for the Rec Council Day Camp. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and golf, and took pride in shooting a hole in one at Legend Lakes Golf Course in Chardon. He and his wife were members of the Lowcountry Presbyterian Church in Bluffton, S.C. Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife of 51 years, Louise (nee Browning); daughter, Bobbi (Bruce) Armstrong; sons, Brian (Marilyn) and Rand (Holly) Cooper; grandchildren, Patricia, Jessica, Lauren, Robert and Catherine; great-grandson, Caiden; and brother, Marshall, of Solon. A memorial service was held Nov. 6 at Lowcountry Presbyterian Church in Bluffton, S.C. Stanley A. Grabowski
Stanley A. Grabowski, 81, of Powell and formerly of Solon, died Nov. 4 2001 at his home. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. Retired from TRW (Tapco) after 37 years, Mr. Grabowski was a member of the Solon Auxiliary Police Department. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Amvets, and a former member of St. Rita Church. Mr. Grabowski is survived by his daughter, Jane (Jeff) Polhemus, of Dublin; son, William (Erin) Grabowski, of Penn Township, Pa.; grandchildren, Eric and Lindsay Polhemus; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Muriel; four brothers and two sisters. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 12 at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Solon. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow (Nov. 9) at Kindrich-McHugh-Steinbauer Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road in Solon. William R. Gale
William R. Gale, 77, a 32-year resident of Chagrin Falls, died Oct. 28 2001 at Hospice of the Western Reserve. Born June 23, 1924, in Indianapolis, he was a graduate of Case Western Reserve University after serving in the U.S. Army. While fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, he was taken prisoner by the Germany Army in January 1945 and survived as a POW for the reminder of the war. Upon release from prison camp, he was one of the few remaining men able to return home. Mr. Gale was a well-known local Realtor who welcomed hundreds of new homeowners to the Chagrin Valley area. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Peggy (nee Wells); children, Richard and Cynthia; and grandson, Bradley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Mildred Gale. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 17 at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 6295 Chagrin River Road in Bentleyville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary's Scholarship Fund, 265 Baker St., Berea 44017.

Ann E. Takacs
Ann E. Takacs, 90, of Bainbridge, died Nov. 4 2001 at Holly Hill Nursing Home, following a short illness. Born Feb. 16, 1911, in Cleveland, she was a homemaker and school bus driver and custodian for the Kenston School System. Her hobby was farming, and she was a member of the Bainbridge Brown Baggers. Mrs. Takacs is survived by her children, William E. (Shirley) and Donald J. (Mardell); grandchildren, James R. (Lucia), Deborah (Chris) Jeffers, Denise (Mark) McCalla, Karie (Steve) Krantz, Kristen and Kevin; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis J. Takacs; son, Donald Brian Takacs; sisters, Margaret Spaeth and Elizabeth Koteles; and brother, William Koteles. Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 7 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Chagrin Falls. Floyd B. Fogel
Floyd B. Fogel, 64, of Auburn Township, died unexpectedly Nov. 3 2001 while hunting. An apparent heart attack is suspected. Born May 3, 1937, in Cleveland, he was an Auburn Township resident for many years. He graduated from Mayfield High School where he excelled in baseball, having pitched a no-hitter. Mr. Fogel was retired from the former LFE Co. in Chesterland, where he was a tool and die maker and a draftsman for over 32 years. Following his retirement, he and his brother, Carl, started a commercial sign business. An avid fisherman and hunter, he was a member of the Mount Pleasant Rod and Gun Club. He also was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and was a scuba diver. Mr. Fogel was an artist who used his talents in his sign manufacturing. He is survived by his wife, Jean C.; daughter, Christina (Sam) Wickware, of Chicago; son, Stephen E. (Melissa), of Auburn; grandchildren, Tanner and Taylor Wickware; brother, Carl R. (Janice), of Chagrin Falls; and two nephews, Douglas and Michael Fogel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Nov. 8) at Stroud-Lawrence Funeral Home in Chagrin Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Martha Komlo
Martha Komlo (nee Bartosh), 75, of Bentleyville, died Nov. 1 2001 at Aurora Manor Nursing Home from complications of diabetes and congestive heart failure. Born July 18, 1926, in Fredricktown, Pa., she was raised and graduated from East Bethlehem High School and received a degree in education from Waynesburg College. Mrs. Komlo taught math and science at Solon High School and later was a substitute teacher for Orange, Chagrin Falls and St. Rita schools. She also served as librarian at St. Rita School and was a custom decorater for J.C. Penney for 18 years. She loved and taught music and was accomplished in xylophone and piano. In addition, she loved to travel and cook and regularly watched the Cooking Channel on cable television. Mrs. Komlo is survived by her children, William K. (Mary), of Milwaukee, John E ., of Bentleyville, Jeffrey J. (Sherry), of Ravenna, Ann (Jon) DeVaul, of Bentleyville, and Karen (James) Valenti, of Russell; grandchildren, Susan, Michael and John; brothers, Stephen, of Redbank, N.J., Lt. Col. John, of Charleston, S.C., and James Bartosh, of Pittsburgh. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 5 at Church of the Resurrection in Solon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association.

Gloria S. Cady
Gloria S. Cady (nee Daniels), 78, of Chardon Township, died Oct. 31 2001 at her home. Born April 7, 1923, in Canton, she moved to Chardon 15 years ago. She married Jack Cady in Canton, on Dec. 24, 1942. He preceded her in death in April 1994. Mrs. Cady worked at Sugardale Meats in Canton for 30 years, retiring in 1985. An avid antique collector, she and her husband opened their home, the Bordner Estate, in Canton as a Victorian Museum during the late 1970s. She loved to cook and share with her family. Mrs. Cady is survived by her daughter, Kyle (Dennis) Palombo, of Chardon; son, James T. Cady, of Boise, Idaho; granddaughter, Gina (Christopher) Folmsbee, of Burnsville, Minn.; grandson, Matthew Cady Palombo, of Oviedo, Fla.; and great-granddaughter, Megan Grace Folmsbee. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah Daniels; and her aunt, Marie Shannon. Funeral services were held Nov. 3, with burial in Chardon Cemetery. Hilda I. Wardle
Hilda I. Wardle (Collister-Walters), 95, of Chardon, died Oct. 30 2001 at Chardon Health Care Center. Born Dec. 22, 1905, in Goheenville, Pa., she moved to Akron, where she was an insurance agent with Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Co. for many years. She also resided in Deerfield and Atwater with her husband, Ray Walters, before moving to Delhi, Calif. There she met and married Charles Wardle. Following his passing 10 years ago, she moved to Chardon. Mrs. Wardle enjoyed all aspects of life including reading, bridge, politics, knitting and watching the Cleveland Indians. As a resident of Chardon Health Care Center for the past two years, she was actively involved with all social activities and family functions. Mrs. Wardle is survived by her daughter, Peggy E. Baker, of Chardon; grandchildren, Karol Keen, of Alliance, Robert P. Baker, of Highland Heights, William R. Baker, of Chardon, and Patricia Hudacher, of Chesterfield, N.H.; 12 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Nov. 3, with burial in Deerfield Cemetery.

John R. Carver
John Robert "Bob" Carver, 68, of Canyon Lake, Calif., died Oct. 31 2001 at his home. Born in Hambden on June 20, 1933, he was a lifelong Hambden resident until he relocated to California in 1988. President of his graduating class in 1951 from Chardon High School, he served in the U.S. Army from June 1953 to May 1955, achieving the rank of corporal. Mr. Carver was regional sales manager and later vice president of sales at Structural Fibers in Chardon and California for 27 years, retiring in 1993. He enjoyed travel, golf, camping and watching sports. He was a member of American Legion Post 167, of Chardon, where he had served as past commander. He was also a former member of Hambden Congregational Church. Mr. Carver is survived by his daughters, Melanie (Leslie) Drinkwater, of Hartville, and Heidi Carver, of Alta Loma, Calif.; grandchildren, Alexa and Joseph Drinkwater; his mother, Dorotha Mae (nee Hoffman) Canfield, of Chardon; brother, Richard "Dick" (Sally) Carver, of Chardon; several nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Bonnie Lindley, of Canyon Lake. He was preceded in death by his father, John Herbert "Herb" Carver; and his stepfather, Wade Canfield. Funeral services were held Nov. 6, with burial in Hambden Cemetery. Charles J. Koritansky
Charles J. Koritansky, 82, of Hambden Township, died Nov. 3 2001 at his home. Born Nov. 29, 1918, in Cleveland, he was a lifelong Hambden resident. A self-employed dairy farmer since 1952, he married L. Helen James on March 27, 1943, in Dunnville, Ontario, Canada. A 1936 graduate of Chardon High School, Mr. Koritansky was a former member of Hambden School Board. He also held board positions on the zoning board of appeals, USDA Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Board, Production Credit Board and Ohio Soil and Water Conservation District Board. In 1940, Mr. Koritansky joined the Royal Canadian Air Force to learn to fly and fight in World War II. He achieved the rank of flight lieutenant with the Royal Air Force and was assigned to coastal command in England. As a B-24 bomber pilot, he commanded a squadron of Czech speaking expatriate pilots. Mr. Koritansky was awarded the Medal of Gallantry by Czech President Eduard Benes, and also received the British Service Ribbon, the British Star, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. In December 1943, he transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corps as a first lieutenant and remained in the U.S. Air Force Reserves until 1957. He continued to enjoy flying, maintaining his private pilot's license until 1966. A 4-H adviser of the Geauga Diarymen Club, he was also a former member of the Hambden Grange. Mr. Koritansky is survived by his wife, L. Helen; sons, John (Jeanne) and Robert (Carol) Koritansky, all of Hambden; grandchildren, Edie (Patrick) Joyce and Peter, Gale and Tom Koritansky; and two great-grandchildren, John and Charles Joyce. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Bertha (nee Kubat) Koritansky; and his brother, Elmer Koritansky. Funeral services were held Nov. 7.
