Mrs. Akers was a homemaker and a member of Church of the Nazarene. She is survived by her husband, Andrew L. Dorothy Jean Basarab, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001. She was born in East Liverpool and lived most of her life in Akron. Mrs. Basarab lived her life as a Christian. She worked at the Portage Hotel and St. Thomas Hospital. Mrs. Basarab is survived her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Marilyn Basarab of Medina; grandchildren, Erik, Michelle and Phillip; sister, June Daily; and brother, Joe Knepper. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Don and Jim Knepper, and parents, Ralph and Kathryn (Farmer) Knepper. Service: 3 p.m. Saturday at Billow Fairlawn Chapel, 85 N. Miller Road, Akron. The Rev. Hilda R. Chapman
Hilda R. Chapman, 84, of Medina, formerly of Lodi, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Medina General Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born June 18, 1916, in Chatham Township to Grover and Faye Frank Rumbaugh. She lived in Lodi most of her life, residing the past 1½ years in Medina. Mrs. Chapman was employed as a nurse at Lodi Community Hospital for many years and was a member of Lodi First Congregational Church. She is survived by her sons, Jerry (Judy) Chapman of Lodi and James (Pat) Chapman of Medina; grandchildren, Tracy Stoll, and Terri, Kristin, Laura and Erin Chapman; and great-grandchildren, Joshua and Justin Stoll. Fred J .Cogar, 84, of Webster Springs, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Cogar was born Feb. 15, 1916, in Webster Springs and lived most of his life in Webster County. He attended Elk Valley Chapel in Webster Springs. He was a coal miner and laborer and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. Dillard D. Lester, 70, of Medina, passed away Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at home, following a short illness. He was born April 9, 1930, in Lake, W.Va., to Dennie and Alie Lester and was a Medina County resident for 45 years. Mr. Lester retired from Ford Motor Co. and belonged to United Auto Workers Local 1250. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Dale Lester (nee Holton); son, Dillard Lester Jr. of Medina; daughters, Robin (Terry) Powers of Medina and Deanna (Bob) Sanborn of North Royalton; grandson, T.J. (Jessica) Powers of Medina; granddaughter, Rachel (Dan) Gibbs of Medina; great-granddaughter, Marlayna Powers; brother, Charles Lester of Hewitt, W.Va.; sisters, Hazel Nichols of Lake, W.Va., and Dillie Wallen of Ripley, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews. Helen M. Somogyi
Helen M. Somogyi (nee Toth), 88, of Medina, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at her residence. She was born Aug. 12, 1912, in Cleveland and was a Medina County resident for more than 50 years. She and her husband were the owners and proprietors of the popular Mickey's Family Tavern on Bronson Street in Medina. Helen touched the lives of many people and was a very caring and giving person. She enjoyed hosting family reunions and loved dogs, including strays she would feed and shelter. She was a member of York United Methodist Church and, until recently, was active in church activities. She is survived by her sisters, Mary (Louis) Trenka of Mentor, Irene (Joe) Cala of Orange, Ohio, and Isabell (Tom) Hegedus of Covina, Calif.; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mickey Somogyi. Service: 10 a.m. Jan. 27 at York United Methodist Church, 6566 Norwalk Road, Medina. A short graveside service at York Township Cemetery will follow and then a luncheon to be served at the church. Gertrude Waugaman
Gertrude Waugaman, 89, of Lakeland, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Lakeland Medical Center. She was born Oct. 15, 1911, in Washington Court House, Ohio, and was a Medina County resident for many years. Mrs. Waugaman was the founding member of St. Philip and James Catholic Church. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Waugaman was the beloved wife of her first husband, the late James Waugaman Sr. and her second husband, the late Kenneth Waugaman; loving mother of James (Janet) Waugaman and the late Martina Blazejewski; stepmother of Karen (Bill) Taylor; sister of Harold Schafer; loving grandmother of 10; and great-grandmother of 17. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Patrick Waugaman. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Philip and James Church, 3727 Bosworth Road, Cleveland. Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery, Brook Park. Sara Hammerschmidt Ritter
Sara Hammerschmidt Ritter died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, of natural causes following a brief illness. She was born Jan. 25, 1921, in Medina to William L. Hammerschmidt and Pearl Eva (Sellers) Hammerschmidt. Her family roots in Medina stretch back to the 1850s. Mrs. Ritter graduated valedictorian from Medina High School in 1937. She was a scholarship student at Wheaton College and at Baldwin-Wallace College, where she graduated valedictorian in 1943. She completed her master's degree in music at the American Conservatory of Music in 1946, where she won the Young Artists' Contest of the Society of American Musicians. A gifted organist, she studied with several prominent artists, including Marcel Dupre. She returned to Baldwin-Wallace to join the conservatory faculty from 1946 to 1949 and 1962 to 1968. After returning to Medina with her family in 1957, she became active in Medina County Chorus, Musical Arts Club and Community Concerts Association, and in 1962, began a 27-year tenure as organist at Medina United Methodist Church. She developed a large class of private piano and organ students and, after retirement, was still active as a substitute organist at several Medina churches as well as playing for many weddings. Honored twice by resolution of the Ohio House of Representatives for her community service, she worked diligently for Mission to Medina, a volunteer transportation organization for the elderly. She is survived by her sons, the Rev. Carl F. Ritter (Audrey) of Pageland, S.C., Dr. George W. Ritter (Priscilla) of Columbus; daughter, Allie Ritter Jensen (Dr. Eric) of Worthington; brothers and sisters, Andrew L. Hammerschmidt (Hazel) of Columbus, N.C., Dr. William W. Hammerschmidt (Dorothy) of Falls Church, Va., and Joan (George) Pletsch of Park Ridge, Ill.; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial service: 4 p.m. Sunday at Medina United Methodist Church with a reception to follow in Fellowship Hall. Everett B. Cook
Everett Bud Cook, 42, of Chippewa Lake, formerly of Creston, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at his residence. He was born June 11, 1958, to Raleigh and Irene Miranda Cook and lived in Chippewa Lake the past five years. He was a food processor for Sandridge Salads in Medina and a member of the Medina congregation of Jehovah's Witness. Mr. Cook is survived by his mother, Irene Cook of Ravenna; sisters, Nancy Bridgman of Ravenna and Beverly Bailey of Brunswick; brothers, Robert E. Cook of Strongsville, Jack R. Cook of Mantua, Peter Peterman of Barberton and Charles Eakin of Medina. He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Paul Daniel. Dorothy J. Ribelin
Dorothy June Ribelin (nee Schlechty), 83, of Mansfield, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Mansfield. She was born in Medina and was a lifetime Medina County resident, prior to moving to Mansfield in 1999. She was a longtime member of Lafayette Methodist Church, where she played the organ for many years. She was a former member of Montville Grange, played in the Albrecht Orchestra and was a member of Eastern Star 266. She also worked on the Medina County Board of Elections and loved music She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Flay Blanchard of Mansfield and Bonnie and Jeffrey Deems of Columbus; granddaughter, Beth Pennell; grandson, Mark Blanchard; great-grandchildren, Sara Appleby, Daniel Pennell, Nick, Mike and Mark Jr. Blanchard; sister, Mae Sanford of Lodi; and brother, Charles Schlechty of Van Wert, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Ribelin; grandchildren, Shelley and Eric Deems; and brother, Fred Schlechty. William Chaky
William Chaky, 79, of Litchfield Township, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his residence. He was born Aug. 1, 1921, in Cleveland and was a Medina County resident for 44 years. Mr. Chaky was a die maker for Par Industries and served in the Army during World War II. He also was a Purple Heart recipient. He is survived by his daughters, Debra (Jeff) Gordon of Litchfield and Patti (Mark) Balog of Medina; son, William L. Catherine Harris
Catherine Harris, 92, of Medina, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Life Care Center of Medina. She was born in Duryea, Pa., and resided in Lakewood before moving to Medina 22 years ago. Mrs. Harris was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Medina. She enjoyed crocheting afghans for relatives and cooking special meals for her family. She was a past committee member at North View Manor Senior Complex in Medina, where she helped with the planning of dinners and events for the residents. Mrs. Harris is survived by her daughter, Catherine (Kay) Dumperth of Valley City; grandchildren, Kathy (Roger) Buhovecky of Valley City, Christian Dumperth of Columbus and Richard (Lora) Dumperth of Chatham Township; great-grandchildren, Justin, Brent, Adam and Brooke; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Victoria Apolski; husband, Jerome Harris; sister, Ann; brothers, Edward, Walter, John and Peter; and son-in-law, Christian Dumperth. Frank H. Rice
Frank H. Rice Jr., 66, of Zellwood, Fla., formerly of Spencer, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Winter Park Memorial Hospital in Winter Park, Fla., following a five-month illness. He was born Dec. 5, 1934, in Spencer to Frank and Pearl VonBoxel Rice and was a lifelong resident before moving to Florida one year ago. Mr. Rice retired from Columbia Gas Transmission following 30 years of service. He served as a Spencer Township clerk for 17 years. He was a member of Spencer United Methodist Church, 10-year member of Rural Water Board, Litchfield Masonic Lodge 608 F&AM, Spencer Knights of Pythias 738, Wellington Eagles, Medina Moose Lodge and past member of Spencer Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Tasula; daughter, Charlotte (Raymond) Hall of Indianapolis; sons, Douglas Rice of Wellington, Tracy (Julie) Shirk of Elyria, Mark (Marcia) Shirk of Tampa, Fla., Bill (Sue) Shirk of Atlanta and Steve (Nilvia) Shirk of Mount Plymouth, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Boyd M. Weaver
Boyd M. Weaver, 86, of Medina, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Life Care Center of Medina. He was born in Brownfield, Pa., to Jesse and Bessie (nee Keener) Weaver and lived in Ida May, W.Va., for many years before retiring to Florida in 1970. Mr. Weaver then moved to Ohio in 1999. He was a coal miner and worked for Bethlehem Steel in West Virginia. He was a member of Moose Lodge and Eagles in West Virginia, where he held several office positions. While in Florida, he worked as a surveyor. He enjoyed bowling and gardening. Mr. Weaver is survived by his daughters, Phyllis Hess of Marietta, Ga., Rosemary Gumont of Spring Hill, Fla., Mrs. Bernard (Loretta) Pyles of Streetsboro and Mrs. Thomas (Cheri) Weaver of Fond du Lac, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Mary Kaythrin Castek (nee Anderson), 75, of Brunswick, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights after a sudden illness. She was born in Coalport, Pa., and was a Brunswick resident for 39 years. Mrs. Castek enjoyed crocheting and all types of crossword puzzles. She was a professional nanny, transport car manager and homemaker. Carl L. Flippo
Carl L. Flippo, 71, local auctioneer and businessman, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at his residence. He was born in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and resided in the Wadsworth area for 38 years, previously residing in Medina. He was a set-up man at General Motors in Parma, retiring in 1981 with 30 years of service. Mr. Flippo also was an auctioneer in Medina County for 30 years. He was a member of the Auctioneers Association and an Army veteran. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty (nee Durham); sons and daughters-in-law, John and Sue of Kent, Jerry and Theresa, Tom, Mike, and Steve and Kate, all of Wadsworth; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Scott Miller of Wadsworth, and Janie and Bill White of Houston; grandchildren, Danny, Chris, Jillian, Missy, Brandon, Teri and Bobby; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Zachary and Emily; two brothers; and two sisters. Bernard F. Goodyear
Bernard F. Goodyear of Naples, Fla., formerly of Painesville, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001. He was born Jan. 26, 1929, in Westfield Center to Hoyt and Thelma Goodyear. Mr. Goodyear was in sales for 37 years, retiring in 1984 from Packaging Corp. of America, Tenneco. He retired in 1997 from Shorewood Packaging, Canada, holding a position in domestic and international sales. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Greta (Leohr); sons, Jeffrey (Karen) and Mitchell (Linda), both of Naples. A memorial service will be held at noon Feb. 17 in the clubhouse at the Naples Beach Hotel, 851 Gulf Shore Blvd. N. Kenneth R. Hess Sr.
Kenneth R. Hess Sr., 77, of Medina, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at Medina General Hospital. He was born Aug. 28, 1923, in Rosco, Pa., and was a Medina County resident for 36 years. Mr. Hess owned Hess Electric and Heating. He was a member of Medina Eagles, VFW Post 5137 and past president of Medina County REACT. He was an avid camper, fisherman and nature lover. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Hess is survived by his wife of 56 years, Fern (nee Lint) Hess of Medina; daughter, Judy Hess of Medina; sons, James (Linda) Hess and Ken (Kim) Hess Jr., both of Medina; grandchildren, Jennifer, Shanna, Amy, Kristen and Jordan Hess; sisters, Irene Mullman of Blairsville, Pa., and Maxine Lane of Scottdale, Pa.; and brothers, Louis (Mary Jane) Hess Jr. and Roy (Bertha) Hess, both of Dawson, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Ellen Hess; daughter, Linda; sister, Frances; and brother, Clifford. Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, 765 N. Keith D. Keffer
Keith D. Keffer, 69, of Brunswick, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Brecksville Veterans Hospital. He was born Oct. 4, 1931, in Defiance and was a Medina County resident for 53 years. He was a member of Brunswick VFW Post 9520, MOCPT 54 Edgewater Post Cleveland and United Steel Workers Union. He was a welder in the steel industry and served in the Navy in the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Leola "Jeannie" Keffer of Brunswick; mother, Josephine Keffer of Medina; stepson, David A. (Linda) St. Clair of North Carolina; grandson, Scott St. Clair of North Carolina; granddaughter, Tara St. Clair of North Carolina; and nieces, Susan Davis of Brunswick and Linda Hafner of Florida. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine, and father, Lester Keffer. Graveside service: 11 a.m. Thursday at Eastlawn Cemetery, Grafton Road, Brunswick. Visiting hours: 7 to 9 p.m. today at Carlson, A Golden Rule Funeral Home, 1642 Pearl Road (one-half mile south of state Route 303), Brunswick. Donald W. Malone
Donald W. Malone, 76, of New Philadelphia, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at his residence. He was born Nov. 23, 1924, in Canton to Wilbert F. and Audrey McCoy Malone. He graduated from Dundee High School in 1941 and retired from the General Motors Parma plant as a skilled trade cutter grinder after 33 years of service. Mr. Malone built his family's log home in Apple Valley and moved to New Philadelphia in 1996. Along with his wife, he was a life-member of Dover VFW. He enjoyed golfing and fishing. He served honorably in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. Don is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Lorenz Malone, whom he married on Aug. 28, 1973; daughters, Sandy (Skip) Remaly, Linda (Bob) Plues, Pam (John) Fieg and Deb (Paul) Shaw; sons, Tim (Dee) Malone and Preston Wallace; brother, Herschel (Judy) Malone; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter. Services have been held. The Rev. Michael E. Walters officiated. Marilyn F. Chesnik
Marilyn F. Chesnik, 62, of Medina, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Grace Hospital in Cleveland. She was born in Boston and was a Medina County resident for 25 years, previously living in Cleveland. Mrs. Chesnik was very active in her church, Our Lady Help of Christians in Chippewa Lake, and Ladies Guild in her church. She also was a member of Chippewa Lake Grandmothers Club and Wadsworth Women's Club. Mrs. Chesnik enjoyed crafts and her grandchildren were the light of her life. She was employed as operations manager at Huntington Bank for many years. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Anthony Neil Chesnik of Medina; daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Scott Evilsizer of Medina, and Natalie and George Rivera of Tampa, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Tammy Chesnik of Rittman; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Kathy King of Maine; grandchildren, Steven Andrew and Stacce Chesnik, and Carlie, Jillian and Maggie Evilsizer; and sister, Janice of Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ruth King, and brother, George King. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Monday at Community of Jesus Emmanuel Catholic Mission in Seville. John F. Dempsey
John F. "Jack" Dempsey died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001. Mr. Dempsey served as a Marine in the South Pacific during World War II. He was the loving father of Jack (Leafie) and Gary (Linda), both of Medina; devoted grandfather of Kelly, Stephanie, Sean and Toby; brother-in-law of Mary Lou; and dearest uncle and granduncle. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Ann (nee Brodzinski); grandchild, Erin; brothers and sister-in-law, Harry and Ellen, and Thomas; and sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Robert Nenadal. Service: 8:45 a.m. Saturday at Ferfolia Funeral Homes, 356 W. Aurora Road, Sagamore Hills. Services: 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Martin of Tours Church. Interment: All Saints Cemetery.
