Mary Blanche Kent
Graveside services for Mary Blanche Kent, 87, who died Feb. 25, 2001 in Apache Junction, Ariz., will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Aurora Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Yoder of the Leetonia Mennonite Church officiating. Born Sept. 12, 1913, in Jewett, she was the daughter of Harvey Grey and Blanche (Amos) Thompson Sr. She graduated from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and was a teacher for 25 years in Ohio and seven years in Florence, Ariz. Mrs. Kent and her husband, Leslie Raymond, ran the family dairy and farm during World War II. She was a member of John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Apache Junction, Ariz. Survivors include a brother, John Thompson Sr. of Fairborn; and sisters, Martha Corbett of Largo, Fla., Lois Knopp of Columbiana, Ann Thompson of Youngstown and Ruth Culp of Little Egg Harbor, N.J. Her husband died in 1986. Brothers, Harvey Grey Jr., Robert, Joseph and Richard Thompson; and sister, Sarah Jane Thompson, all died previously. Arrangements are being handled by Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent.

Eugene C. "Gene" Hoover
Eugene C. "Gene" Hoover, 73, of Ravenna, died Friday, June 20, 2001, at his home. Born June 18, 1928, in Ravenna, he was the son of Eugene F. and Jessie Leta (Pittman) Hoover. He was a life-time Ravenna resident, graduating from Ravenna High School in 1946. Mr. Hoover had been a process engineer with the Norton Co. of Akron. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Unity Lodge No. 12 of Ravenna, past patron of the Ravenna Chapter No. 46 Order of the Eastern Star, the Portage Amateur Radio Club with call letters KC8KME and the Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton. Survivors include his wife, Erma (Davis), to whom he was married for 47 years; sons, Bruce and Bret (Linda), both of Ravenna, and Michael (Michelle) of West Farmington; daughter, Robin (Ron) Tusai of Rootstown; three grandchildren; brothers, Howard (Sara) of Charlestown, Jack (Carole) of Brady Lake and Glenn (Donna) of Fort Myers, Fla.; and sister, Jessie Horning of Kent. Cremation has taken place, and there will be no calling hours. A Masonic service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, followed by an Order of the Eastern Star service. A memorial service will immediately follow the Order of the Eastern Star service. Clarence Woodrow Olin
Ravenna native Clarence Woodrow Olin, 82, of Sebring, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring. Born Jan. 21, 1919, in Ravenna, he was the son of Charles Ernest and Minerva Ann (Yost) Olin. He has been a resident of the Copeland Oaks Retirement Community in Sebring since December of 1998. He had lived in Suffield for 18 years. Mr. Olin was chief superviser of home delivery routes for the Isaly Dairy Co. He had more than 100 routes in and around the Youngstown area. He moved to California in the early 1960s where he was the sales manager in wholesale and retail sales for the Jessup Dairy Co. He returned to Ohio and was a salesman for Chestnut Ridge Dairy in Akron and retired from Ohio Pure Foods in 1984. Mr. Olin was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving for two years. He was a Signalman third class, training in radio at the University of Chicago and serving at the Armed Guard Center with Permanent Shore Patrol in Great Lakes and Chicago, Ill. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, American Medal and the Victory Medal. He served on the Green Township Zoning Board, Greenford Range and Boy Scouts of America Troop No. 114 (Lutheran Church). He was a member of the Western Reserve United Methodist Church. He held many offices in the United Methodist Church Conference. He was a 1962 delegate to the General Conference. In the early 1960s, he was made Honorary President of the National Dairy Association. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Mae (Miller), whom he married Sept. 3, 1938; son, Dr. Gary L. Olin of Youngstown; daughter, Suzanna M. (Ronald) Charlton of Trego, Montana; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brothers, E. John Olin of San Diego and Charles E. Olin of Beaverton, Oregon. A brother, Floyd J., and two great-grandsons died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen Funeral Home in Salem and one hour prior to 11 a.m. funeral services Wednesday at the Windham Bible Church, with the Rev. Russell Adams of the Western Reserve United Methodist Church officiating. The U.S. Navy will provide full military honors at the church. Burial will be in Windham Township Cemetery. Ethel Shearer
WINDHAM - Ethel Shearer, 76, who is survived by 117 living descendants, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at Maison Aine Nursing Home in Stow following a brief illness. Born Nov. 5, 1924, in Sharon, Pa., she was the daughter of Roy and Lillian (McArthur) Parker. She was a lifetime Windham resident. Mrs. Shearer was a homemaker. She was a member of First Assembly of Pentecost Church in Newton Falls, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Windham Fire Department, the Mothers' Club and Athletic Boosters Club. She enjoyed bowling and bingo. Survivors include her sons, David, Edward and Kenneth, all of Windham, and Gerald of Leavittsburg; daughters, Patty Gibson, Sandra Centric, Barbara Lopez Armstrong and Donna Ridenbaugh, all of Windham, Mary Barnes of Garrettsville and Suellen Rosier of Newton Falls; 39 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Parker of Andover; and sisters, Lillian Tomko of Smyrna, Ga., and Vera Baluck and Agnes Morgan, both of Warren. Her husband, Robert F., whom she married Oct. 13, 1943, died March 7, 1994. A son, Robert; and sisters, Maxine Luoma and Mary Ellen Spencer, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Assembly of Pentecost Church, 4363 Braceville-Robinson Road in Newton Falls, with the Rev. William McCartney officiating. Burial will be in Windham Township Cemetery.

Earle E. "Coach" Wolfe
Earle E. "Coach" Wolfe, 75, of Cuyahoga Falls, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Hospice Care Center in Akron after a long illness. Born March 27, 1926, in Akron, he was the son of Russell C. and Nannie B. (Brown) Wolfe. He had lived in Rootstown for more than 30 years. He graduated from Akron South High School and received a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Akron. Mr. Wolfe taught at Kenmore High School in Akron for 33 years before his retirement. He was a member of the Akron Softball Hall of Fame, Summit County Hall of Fame and the University of Akron Basketball Hall of Fame. He was an avid golfer. Mr. Wolfe was a member of New Milford Baptist Church in Rootstown, where he served for many years as head trustee and was active on the church softball team. Survivors include his wife, Shirley (Craig), to whom he was married 40 years; son, Jeff (Lissa) of Charlotte, N.C.; and daughter, Marcy of Cuyahoga Falls. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, and from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Friday at New Milford Baptist Church in Rootstown, with the Rev. Juanita C. Woods, 76, of Ravenna Township, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Oct. 25, 1924, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Morris and Cora J. (Crockett) Putnam. She was a Ravenna Township resident for 50 years. Mrs. Woods was employed as a cook for the Head Start program. Survivors include her sons, James, Jr. (Charlotte) of Ravenna and Donald (Kim) of Florida; daughters, Marie (Luther) Fortson, Shirley (Paul) Justice and Karen (Douglas Sr.) Sanders, all of Ravenna, Joyce Woods and Linda Sanders, both of Kent; 27 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Putnam of Arizona, and Donald Putnam and Russell Putnam, both of Ravenna; and sister, Bessie Thompson of Cleveland. Her husband, James Sr., died in 1974. Her sons, David, Robert and Bernard; brothers, Richard, Morris and Johnny Putnam; and sisters, Evelyn Putnam, Eleanor Putnam and Dorothy Dennis, died previously. Visitation will be held at noon Wednesday at Winfield Church of God in Christ in Ravenna, where services will follow at 1 p.m. with Elder C.C. Henderson officiating. David Jeffrey Graham, 48
David Jeffrey Graham, 48, of Frances Drive, Kent, who taught at Southeast High School for 26 years, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at his home. Born Dec. 22, 1952, in Akron, he was the son of Robert C. and Anne E. (Peck) Graham. He was a graduate of Springfield High School and Hiram College. Mr. Graham taught art, sociology and current events at Southeast High School. He also was the head boys track coach and was formerly an assistant varisty football coach for many years. He was a member of Southeast Local District Teachers Association, the Ohio Education Association and the National Education Association. Survivors include his wife, Shirley J. (Kuzio), whom he married July 19, 1980; father and stepmother, Robert C. and Velda Graham of Akron; and brother, Robert M. of Portland, Oregon. His mother, Anne E.; and brother, William C., died previously. Calling hours will be held from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kent, with the Rev. Elizabeth M. Hazelton officiating. June E. Coy, 81, of 370 Silver Oaks Drive, Kent, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Akron City Hospital. Born May 5, 1920, in Toledo, she was the daughter of Earl W. and Henrietta V. (Bolker) McDarr. Mrs. Coy retired in 1982 from her job in data processing with Toledo Edison Power. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Kent. Survivors include her son, Earl W. (Dorothy) Bartell of Kent; daughter, Marjorie Brown of Fort Worth, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Hope (Russell) Carpenter of Toledo. EDINBURG - Leanna M. Friend, 66, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born May 29, 1935 in Fiarview, she was the daughter of Samuel and Alice Grace (Altman) Giesey Sr. Formerly of Rootstown, she lived in Edinburg the past month. She was employed as a cook and assistant manager at L&K and Ike's Restaurant in Ravenna. She attended Community Bible Church in Rootstown. Survivors include her former husband, Darwin Friend Sr. of Edinburg; son, Darwin Jr. of Rootstown; daughters, Darlene M. Bishop of Edinburg and Marilyn Y. Friend of Kent; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, James Giesey of North Dakota, Thomas Giesey of Carey, Ohio; sisters, Betty Van DenEynde and Wilma Bickmyer of Findlay, Mary Spitler of Van Buren and Eileen Giesey of North Baltimore, Ohio. A brother, Samuel Giesey, and sisters Margaret Chaffin, Ginger Chaffin and Sherry Giesey died previously. Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Oda Bell
Oda Bell (Brown) Bright, 76, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at the home of her son in Nelson after a long illness. Born March 23, 1925, in Gad, W.Va., she was the daughter of David and Pina (Bailes) Brown. She had lived in the Garrettsville area for 30 years after moving from Warren. Mrs. Bright was an employee of Ohio Lamp for 37 years. She was a Methodist. Survivors include her sons, Donald H. "Brownie" Brown of Nelson, William "Bill" Bright of Warren and Nelson Bright of Nelson, with whom she made her home; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Daniel Brown of Warren and Willis Brown of Poe, W.Va.; and sisters, Macel Wood of Naples, Fla. and Lou Bowen of Cortland. Nine brothers; three sisters; and one grandson died previously. Visitation will be held from noon until services at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville, with the Rev. Fred Bell officiating.

Anna C. Marks
MANTUA - Anna C. Marks, 91, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Grand Village Nursing Home in Twinsburg. Born April 6, 1910 in Toronto, Ohio, she was the daughter of Adam and Bertha (Rudolph) Chettle. She had been a Mantua resident since 1933. Mrs. Marks taught at Mantua Center Schools on the elementary level for 31 years. Survivors include her son, Gene of Mantua; and three grandchildren. Calling hours will be private. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg, with the Rev. Fred Bell officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville.
