James Bonner, 43
MOGADORE - James E. Bonner, 43, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998 after a year-long battle with leukemia. Born in Akron, he was the son of Ellery and Lena Bonner. He had lived in Mogadore all of his life. Mr. Bonner was an employee at Summit Grinding and Machine. Survivors include his son, Adam; daughters, Holly Bonner and Charity Duncan, two grandchildren; parents, Ellery and Lena Bonner of Mogadore; brother, David (Denise) Bonner of Akron; sisters, Sue (Scott) Jones of Mogadore and Barb (Buddy) Morgan of Suffield; and Larry Gough. Visitation will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Mogadaore. Chapel services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Greenwood Cemetery in Mogadore, with the Rev. Steve Haddix officiating.

Arthur Austin, 73
Arthur G. Austin, 73, of Bethlehem, Pa., a former area resident, died Thursday Sept. 24, 1998 at Muhlenberg Hospital Center in Bethlehem. Born May 6, 1925 in Sharpsville, Pa. he was the son of Frederick and Estella (Gough) Austin. Mr. Austin worked for Lockheed Martin as an electrical engineer for 26 years until he retired in 1989. He also had worked for Goodyear Aerospace in Akron. He was U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Helen (Laurence); sons, Paul (Christine) of Missouri City, Texas, Richard (Denise) of Katy, Texas, Thomas (Sandi) of Allentown, Pa., and Brian of Houston, Texas; daughters, Raymond (Jean) Ferro of Covington, La., Barbara Graham of Bethlehem; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Roy (Betty) Calvin of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sisters, Betty (Robert) Radford of Sharpsville, Pa., and Nancy (Kenneth) Amer of Ohio. His sister, Martha Ballew died previously. Graveside services will held at 2 p.m. Monday at Cedar Hill Memorial Park in Bethlehem. Arrangements were made by Connell Funeral Home in Bethlehem. Michael Sorbes, 81
Michael Sorbes, 81, of Hermitage, Pa., the father of Mrs. Claude (June Eileen) King of Mantua, died Thursday Sept. 24, 1998 at Horizon Health System in Greenville, Pa. Mr. Sorbes was a superintendent at Columbian Vise Manufacturing in Cleveland for 24 years until he retired in 1976. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. In addition to Mrs. King, survivors include his wife, Aleta (Fell), whom he married June 27, 1940; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. His brother, John Jr., died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Donaldson-Mohney Funeral Home at 124 Main St., Sharpsville, Pa. where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Lawrence Lyman officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua.

MANTUA - Frank Rossa, 72, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna. Services will be announced by Green's Funeral Home, Mantua.

Joan Brewster
Joan M. Brewster, 60, of Ravenna died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at her residence. Born June 1, 1938 in Decatur, Ill., she was the daughter of George and Millie (Paschal) Desmett. She had been a Ravenna resident for 24 years. She formerly lived in Dayton. Mrs. Brewster was employed as an associate at CVS on East Main Street in Ravenna. She was president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 1055 in Ravenna three times. She also was president of the Portage County Council of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for two years. An avid bowler, she participated in the Fantasy Flight League at Country Club Lanes. Survivors include her husband, Daniel, to whom she was married 23 years; sons, Patrick (Kathleen) Michl of Ravenna; Dan (Jena) Michl of Deerfield; Stephen (Connie) Brewster of Ravenna; and Kelly (Jamie) Brewster of Ravenna; daughter, Denise (Randy Bergman) Tannert of Ravenna; 15 grandchildren; parents, George and Millie Desmett of Rootstown; brothers, Gary Youtz of Colorado Springs, Col.; and sisters, Janice Fincher of Texas and Cathy Wirick of Rootstown. A brother, George Desmett, died in 1997. A sister, LeeAnn Quintrell, died in 1994. Calling hours will be held from noon until services at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna. Memorials may be made to the Robinson Memorial Hospital Foundation Hospice.

Elmer Sargent
Elmer L. Sargent, 77, of Troy Township, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at Maplewood Care Center in Streetsboro. Born March 11,1921 in Auburn Township, he was the son of William and Lottie (Stoneman) Sargent. Mr. Sargent worked for many years on the family farm in Auburn. He was a self-employed milk hauler and then was a truck driver for Ronyak Brothers Trucking in Burton until he retired in 1986. After retirement, he assisted his brother, Howard, as a truck driver for Solon Sand and Gravel Co. in Mantua. He enjoyed snowmobiling, horse, baseball and basketball. Survivors include his brother, Howard (Pat ) Sargent of Mantua; and sisters, Marie Protiva of Burton, and Ruby Shaffer of Hiram. His brother, Norman, died in 1997. Calling hours will be held from 6 p.m. until services at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua. Burial will be in Mapleshade Cemetery in Auburn Center. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Dalton Haas
Dalton L. Haas, 80, of Ravenna, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Jan. 17, 1918 in Alliance, he was the son of Russell and Aleta (Lang) Haas. He had lived in the Portage County area all his life. Mr. Haas worked as a rural mail carrier. He was a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association and held several offices in the organization. He was a member of Edinburg United Church. Survivors include his wife, Jennie (Twiggs); son, Richard of Kent; daughter, Marilyn Snow of Wheaton, Ill.; five grandchildren; and sister, Margaret Keener of Uniontown. His first wife, Hazel, died in 1982. A grandson, Thomas Snow, died previously. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna. Arrangements were made by Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Memorials may be made to Edinburg United Church.

Maurice Palmer, 96
Taught at KSU for 40 years
Dr. Maurice B. Palmer, 96, who taught chemistry at Kent State University for 40 years, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, in Tinmouth, Vt. Born May 8, 1902 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, he was the son of Delbert and Carolyn Palmer. He accepted a position on the chemistry staff of what was then Kent State Normal College in 1931. As a member of the graduate faculty, he was active in research, working with master and doctorate candidates. During World War II, he was on leave to Purdue University as a problem solver for the war effort. During much of his career, Dr. Palmer was an active consultant in industry, especially with the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. After enjoying a 40-year-teaching career in KSU's chemistry department, he retired in 1972 and was named an emeritus professor. He was a member of the honorary societies: Iota Phi, Phi Lambda Upsilon and Sigma Xi. He also was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and the American Chemical Society for more than 50 years. He married Louisa V. Fenton in 1933. In 1940, the couple purchased and restored an early Victorian home, located at 125 N. Pearl St. in Kent, and lived there for more than 50 years. The home was built for Zenas Kent in 1843 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places while the Palmers owned it. Survivors include his daughters, Mary P. Tremmel and Patricia P. Sellars; son-in-law, Carl G. Tremmel; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His wife died previously. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to First Church of Christ Scientist, 344 W. Main St., Kent, or to the Chemistry Department Scholarship Fund, Kent State University.

Bessie Wise
RANDOLPH - Bessie M. Wise, 99, a life resident of Randolph who once taught in a one-room township school, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998 at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna. Born Jan. 5, 1899 in Randolph, she was the daughter of Seward and Emma (Fox) Royer. As a young woman, she taught in the Butternut School, a one-room grade school, in Randolph. She was a devoted lifetime member of Randolph United Methodist Church, Randolph Senior Citizens and the Ladies Cemetery Association. Survivors include her sons, Robert (Lois), Richard (Veronica), Charles (Sue) and Russell (Mary), all of Randolph; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband, Harry, died in 1962. Her grandchildren, Kathleen Grdina and Timothy Wise, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, and from 10:30 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Friday at Randolph United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery of Randolph. Memorials may be made Randolph United Methodist Church.

Vera Lindsay
Vera B. Lindsay (Mangus), 96, the stepmother of two Kent residents, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998. She was born in New Philadelphia and was a lifelong member of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include her son, Don C. Mangus of Akron; daughters, Gloria Estep and Marlene Maines of Akron; stepdaughters, Violet Noland and Ruth Just, both of Kent; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters, Irene Heacock and Billie Grimm, both of Alliance. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Mogadore. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park in Akron. Eckard-Baldwin Funeral Home in Akron handled arrangements.

Viola Holler
DIAMOND - Viola "Ollie" Pearl Holler, 101, who is survived by five generations of descendants, died Sunday Sept. 27, 1998 at her daughter's residence in Diamond. Born January 24, 1897 in Kegg, Pa., she was the daughter of Marion and Ruie (Hillegass) Burkett. Mrs. Holler worked at White Sulfur Springs Hotel in Manns Choice, Pa. and later became a homemaker. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Buffalo Mills, Pa. Survivors include her son, George of Massillon; daughters, Blanche Witter and Thelma Sullivan, both of Brooksville, Fla., Pearl Lipscome of Palm Dale, Calif., Maxine Sexton of Diamond; 27 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; brother, Walter Burkett of Hyndman, Pa.; and sister, Edna Caton of Somerset, Pa. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home in Hyndman, Pa, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Dry Ridge Cemetery.

Benjamin Proctor
Benjamin Joseph Proctor, 27, a former area resident, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998 at Lakewood Hospital in Lakewood. The Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office is investigating the cause of death. Born Dec. 29, 1970 in Ravenna, he was the son of Howard J. and Marie Ellen (Longstreth) Proctor. Mr. Proctor was a U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife, Jennifer (Gbur), who is stationed with the U.S. Army in Germany; daughter, Celeste Emmanuel Proctor of Barnesville; mother, Marie E. (Lanville) Elkins of Cleveland; brothers, Mark, Joey and Butchy; sisters, Christina, Casey, Nikki and Alexis; and grandparents, Joan Proctor of Kent and Clarence and Gladys Longstreth of Kent. His father, Howard J. "Butch," Proctor, and grandfather, Howard Proctor, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home in Kent, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Thomas R. Shirer officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.

Charles Everly
MOGADORE - Charles C. "Chuck" Everly, 69, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998 at Hospice Care Center in Copley Township after a sudden illness. Born April 25, 1929, in Pisgah, W. Va., he was the son of Lyman D. and Lillian Everly. He had lived in Mogadore since 1972. Mr. Everly owned and operated Chuck's Appliance Service for more than 25 years, and along with his wife, Pat, called on many homes in the Portage-Summit area. He previously worked as a service manager for Home Center Stores, was senior engineer at the Chapel Hill power plant and an aircraft electrician at Goodyear Aircraft. Survivors include his wife, Patricia F., to whom he was married 26 years; sons, Daniel (Cathy) of Cuyahoga Falls, Mark (Annette) of Tampa, Fla., Don (Sandy) of Chippewa Lake and Douglas (Susan) Talbott of Worthington; daughters, Karen (David) Moran of Norton, and Tammy Talbott of Columbus; 10 grandchildren; brother, J.P. Smyth of Morgantown, W. Va.; and sister, Mary Lou Eidsness of Bowie, Md. His father and stepmother, Lyman and Flo Everly; mother and stepfather, Lillian and Paul Smyth, died previously. Daniel Barta
AURORA - Daniel Barta, 79, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at Meridia Suburban Hospital from complications arising from lymphoma. Born Oct. 3, 1918 in Mansfield, he was the son of Demetru and Mary (Kalushari) Barta. He had lived in Aurora for 55 years. Mr. Barta worked in Aurora as a foreman at Industrial Silica Sand Corp., a part-time police officer, and as a self-employed excavator for Barta Excavation. He was captain and treasurer of the Civil Defense Unit of Aurora. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Aurora since its inception. Survivors include his wife, Vivian (Woodyard), whom he married in April 1940; sons, Daniel V. (Dolores) and Patrick G. (Cheryl); one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and brother, Theodore (Helen). His sister, Mary Chaky, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Kindrich-McHugh Steinbauer Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road, Solon. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Aurora.
