Elsie Steinel
Elsie Elizabeth Steinel, 85, of Ravenna, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at Akron City Hospital. Born July 9, 1913 in Akron, she was the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth (Aston) Smith. She lived in Akron until moving to Randolph in 1957. She had lived in Ravenna for the past year. She was a member of the Homemakers Club and The Hobby Club of Randolph. She was a former member of the Allenside Presbyterian Church of Akron. Survivors include her sons, George E. Jr. of Atwater, and Kenneth P. of Edinburg; daughter, Donna L. Sapp of Akron; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Edna Dodson of Kent. Her husband, George E. Sr., died Dec. 6, 1995. A sister, Inez Braucher, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Robert Pfeiffer officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Randolph.

MOGADORE - Marian O. (Mong) Russell, 94, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998. Born in Mogadore, she was a lifetime resident of the community. Mrs. Russell was a poll worker in Mogadore for several years. She was a member of the Mogadore United Methodist Church, Daughters of America, Mogadore Garden Club and Mogadore Literary Club. Survivors include her nephew, Jim (Pat) King of Mogadore; and niece, Mary J. Shaw of Sylvan Lake, Mich. Her husband, E. Otis Russell, died in 1973. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Mogadore, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Karen Graham officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Mogadore.

Louis Mohan Jr.
RANDOLPH - Louis James "Mo" Mohan Jr., 67, died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at his home. Born in Copley, he was the son of Louis J. and Bertha Mohan. He had lived most of his life in the Cuyahoga Falls, Stow, and Atwater areas. Mr. Mohan worked at Roadway Express for 31 years until he retired in 1993. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his sons, Ted (Tami) of Rootstown, and James (Beth) of Randolph; daughter, Cindy (Harvey) Sollers of Rootstown; one grandchild; brother, Dale (Georgene) of Cuyahoga Falls; and the mother of his children, Jessie Baum. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Mogadore, where services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Sam Goebel officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Hillside Cemetery in Randolph. Memorials may be made to the Randolph Fire and EMS Department.

Florence Williams
Florence M. Williams, 83, of 2200 Milton Blvd., Newton Falls, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Laurie Ann Nursing Home in Newton Falls. Born June 18, 1915 in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Fred S. and Bertha (Caldwell) Geib. She was a lifetime resident of Portage County and lived in Palmyra before moving to Newton Falls. Mrs. Williams was a member of the Palmyra United Methodist Church, the Palmyra Senior Citizens Lunch Group and was active with the 4-H Club. She was one of the founders of the Palmyra Fire Flies Association and she enjoyed traveling, bingo, crocheting and knitting. Survivors include her daughter, Judy (William) Davis of Southington; grandson, Jim Davis of Burghill; and one great-grandchild. Her husband, Sidney S. Williams, whom she married Aug. 5, 1938, died April 27, 1983. Her sister, Mary Pfile, and brothers, Richard, Fred (June) and James, also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the James Funeral Home, 8 E. Broad St., Newton Falls, Ohio, 44444, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Palmyra Cemetery.

Russell Workman
NEWTON FALLS - Russell L. Workman Jr., 60, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1988 at St. Joseph Health Care in Warren. Born Aug. 14, 1938 in Warren, he was the son of Russell and Ruth (Loveland) Workman. He was a press operator for the Peerless Winsmith Corporation in Warren. He loved to dance. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Aside from his parents, survivors include his brothers, Thomas and Robert, both of Newton Falls; and sisters, Florence Ann Steinberg and April Stroup, both of Newton Falls. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Dwaine Trump officiating. Burial will be in Newton Falls Cemetery.

Grace Diane Stuart
BRIMFIELD - Grace Diana Stuart, 92, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at Stow-Glen Nursing Home. Born March 28, 1906 in Greer, S.C., she was the daughter of Rufus and Margaret (White) Reid. She had lived in California and Brimfield before moving to Stow-Glen in 1991. She was a secretary for the Veterans Administration in Santa Monica, Calif. Survivors include her sister, Attie Stewart of Brimfield; nephews, Cecil and Bo Stewart of Akron and Donald Stewart of Brimfield; and niece, Betty Saley of Brimfield. Her sisters, Ruth Burton and Lottie Gillenwater, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Betty Lowe officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery of Canton.

Maxine Spano of Ravenna died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at her home. Arrangements are being handled by the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Lillian Stevens
MOGADORE - Lillian E. Stevens, 84, died Tuesday Nov. 17, 1998. Born in Akron, she had lived in Mogadore most of her life. Mrs. Stevens was a homemaker. She was a member of Mogadore Christian Church and its quilting club. Survivors include her sons, James (Caroline) of Mogadore, David (Karen) of Colorado, Donald (Delores) of Timberlake, Ohio; daughters, Nancy (Herman) Huth and Barbara (Tom) Murphy, both of Mogadore; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Wilbur Cooper of Mogadore and Alvin Cooper of Florida, and sister, Donna Cooper of Mogadore. Her husband, Younger, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Mogadore, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with Dr. Eugene Higgins officiating. Nancy C. Schultz
GARRETTSVILLE - Nancy C. Schultz, 62, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Maple Wood Care Centre, Streetsboro, after a short illness. Born May 11, 1936 in Garrettsville, she was the daughter of Albert and Laurel (Filkins) Schultz Seaton. She had been a secretary at Dresser Industries. She previously worked at Fix Cleaners in Cleveland and Deluxe Cleaners in Garrettsville. Survivors include her brother, Jack of Garrettsville; and sisters, Betty Jennings of Kent and Suzanne Lambert of Windham. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church of Garrettsville, with the Rev. John H. Wolfe officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Garrettsville. Arrangements are being handled by Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. Memorials may be made to the People Tree or the Food Shelf through the United Methodist Church of Garrettsville.

Catherine Sherbac
Catherine A. Sherbac, 88, of Columbus, the mother of Karen Lee Gushura of Garrettsville, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, atNorth Land Terrace Nursing Home in Columbus. Born Sept. 11, 1910 in Europe, she was the daughter of Steve and Catherine (Spies) Mack. She was a former Liberty Township resident. Mrs. Sherbac had worked at LaFrance Dry Cleaning in Liberty. In addition to Mrs. Gushura, survivors include her daughter, Adeline Hope Wolinski of Columbus; seven grandchildren, three threat-grandchildren; and brother, John Mack of Kinsman. Her husband, John, died Jan. 20, 1996. Two brothers died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Blackstone Funeral Home, Churchill Road, Girard, where a service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday followed by services at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Vienna. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Vienna.

William Bard
STOW - William J. "Bill" Bard, 73, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron. Born Sept. 10, 1925 in Bakerstown, Pa., he was the son of Harry and Anna (Gregg) Bard. He was a former Kent resident. Mr. Bard retired as a transit sales manager for the R.C.A. Rubber Co. in Akron after 42 years. A 32nd degree Mason, he was a member of Mt. Akra Masonic Lodge of Akron. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Elsie (Austin); daughters, Cathie Benko of Stow and Dorothy (Martin) Banks of Augusta, Ga.; three grandchildren; and sister, Nancy (Hugh) Palmer of Wingate, N.C. His brother, Harry Jr., and sister, Barbara Ann, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel, where a Masonic service will be held at 5:45 p.m. Thursday. A private burial will be held for the family Friday at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Stow Rescue Squad.

Maria Domino
Maria Catherine Domino, 3-and-a-half months, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at UNC Hospital at Chapel Hill, N.C. Born July 29, 1998, she was the daughter of Tony and Mary Kay Domino of Raleigh, N.C. She was baptized at St. Patrick's Church in Kent, and was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh. In addition to her parents, survivors include maternal grandparents Wayne and Mary Catherine Taylor of Kent; and paternal grandparents Gasper and Ethel Domino of Washingtonville, N.Y. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Arrangements are being handled by the Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, N.C. Sylvan Pero
RANDOLPH - Sylvan L. Pero, 79, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at J.T. Nist Nursing Home in Nimishillen Twp. Born in Suffield, he was the son of Charles and Anna Pero. He lived in the Portage and Stark county area all of his life. Mr. Pero retired from Diamond-Portland Cement Co. in Middlebranch in 1980. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Randolph, and the Knights of Columbus St. Joseph's Council No. 2039. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his brothers, Robert (June) of Washington Court House, and Fred (Audrey) of Suffield; and sisters, Helen Kalafus of Akron, and Marjorie of Randolph. His brothers, George and Claude, and sisters Susan Seeman and Sister Margaret Mary, C.S.A., also died previously. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in, Akron, where a wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Randolph, with the Rev. Dr. Dorcas Anderson
Dr. Dorcas J. Anderson, 82, of East Main Street, Kent, who was a biology professor at Kent State University until she retired, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at the Crown Center at Laurel Lake in Hudson. Born Jan. 16, 1916 in Terre Haute, Ind., she was the daughter of Lorenzo Dow and Alma (Benthal) Anderson. Dr. Anderson was a past president and honorary life member of the Kent branch of the American Association of University Women, a Portage County ARC volunteer for Channels 45/49 and a past board member and volunteer of the Delta Kappa Gamma-Theta chapter. "Dorcas Anderson was a wonderful role model for young women pursuing a career in higher education," said Margaret Garmon, an AAUW member and past president. "She was a forerunner for women seeking a career in the sciences. She loved her work of teaching biology at Kent State University. She never seemed to indicate it was a novelty for women being capable of pursuing a science career. For her, it was a career path that just came naturally." There will be no calling hours or funeral services. Arrangements were made by the Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Memorials may be made to the Kent branch AAUW Educational Foundation for scholarships.

John Alger
Former Mantua resident John A. Alger, 84, of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998. Born March 8, 1914 in Wallace, Idaho, he was the son of John and Blanche Alger. He graduated from Mantua Township High School in 1932 and had moved several times before moving to Punta Gorda, Fla. in 1979. Mr. Alger studied horticulture at The Ohio State University and worked for the United States Department of Agriculture. He was also a groundskeeper at a state institution and worked in several greenhouses, specializing in roses. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was chairman of the Park Hill Estates Beautification Committee and a member of the board of directors. He took pride in tending to the park, making sure it was always full of flowers. Survivors include his wife, Clara (Holeski), whom he married Aug. 30, 1941; son, Roland of Ripon, Wis.; daughter, Annette Schuchardt of Oakfield, Wis.; and four grandchildren. His brothers, Sam and Horton, and sister, Marie, died previously. Arrangements were handled by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Punta Gorda, Fla. Memorials may be made to the John Alger Park Hill Memorial, which will go toward the upkeep of park beautification, 10101 Burnt Store Road Lot 25, Punta Gorda, Fla., 33950.

Glenn Stevens
STOW - Glenn W. Stevens, 76, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998. Born Aug. 28, 1922 in Cleveland, he was the son of Raymond and Anna Stevens. Mr. Stevens was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed at U.S. Steel in Lorain. After retiring from U.S. Steel in 1977, he worked 10 years for Revco DS, Inc. He was an avid bowler, traveler, card player, crossword puzzle worker and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Ruby; son, Gary Weichman of Edinburg; daughters, Dana (Butch) Vajdich of Brunswick, Vicky (Minh) Luong of Mapleshade, N.J., Vicky (Stephen) Young of Chino Valley, Ariz., Gay (Dan) Odeens of Coatesville, Pa. and Brenda (Robert) Carpenter of Westlake; 20 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His son, David, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Redmon Funeral Home in Stow where services will follow at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Dan Odeens officiating. Lillian Kuntzman
SUFFIELD - Lillian Kuntzman, 91, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at her son's residence. Born in Akron, she had lived most of her life in Northampton. Mrs. Kuntzman was a charter member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. Survivors include sons, George (Jan) of White City, Kan., and Dan (Dianne) of Suffield; daughter, Mary (Pat) Conahan of Green; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Dunn-Quigley Ciriello & Carr Chapel in Cuyahoga Falls. Services will be held at 1 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Cuyahoga Falls. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron. Friends will be received at the home of Dan and Dianne Kuntzman following the burial. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Greater Akron.

NEWTON FALLS - Joseph J. Nemet, 83, of 239 Albert St., died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998. Calling hours will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Church in Newton Falls where a memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Memorials may be made to St. Marys Church. Elaine Sue (Villers) Sullivan, 45, of Ravenna, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Aug. 25, 1953, in Ravenna, she was the daughter of John Henry and Gay (Belknap) Richards and lived in Ravenna before moving to Ravenna Township in 1992. Mrs. Sullivan was a cashier with Giant Eagle in Rootstown and had previously managed the East Park Drive-in of Ravenna. Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Sullivan; son, Joshua Villers of Stow; step-sons, Alan R. Sullivan of Ravenna, Patrick L. (Cathy) Sullivan of Rootstown and Samuel D. Sullivan of Brimfield; a step-granddaughter; mother, Gay Richards of Ravenna; brother, Dean Richards of Deerfield; and sisters, Linda Knippenberg of Ravenna and Darlene McBride of Hubbard. Her infant son, Darrell John Villers, and father, John Henry Richards, died previously. Jane Boosinger
Jane M. Boosinger, 75, of Ravenna, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born April 27, 1923, in New Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Wollenberg) Nader. She was a Ravenna resident since 1949. Mrs. Boosinger retired in 1985 from Kent State University as the head cook. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna, Catholic Daughters of America, Court No. 920, and the Young at Heart seniors club at Immaculate Conception. Survivors include her sons, John of Strongsville, James of Cleveland and Joseph of the U.S. Navy base in Seattle; daughter, Janet Tirpak of Ravenna; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sister, Mary Liston of Ravenna. Her husband, John "Jack" and brothers, Paul, James and Robert Nader, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Esther Hardenbrook
NEWTON FALLS - Esther G. Hardenbrook, 70, of Newton Falls, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown. Born March 22, 1928, in Warren, she was the daughter of Louie and Rose (Ceo) DeCapito. She retired from General Motors where she was a production supervisor. Survivors include her son, Lou Ciferno of Warren; daughters, Roseanne Cabot and Tomi Westover, both of Newton Falls; mother, Rose of Newton Falls; brother Louie Jr. of Warren; sister Cheryl Urbania of Newton Falls; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will be held at noon Tuesday at St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls. Memorials may be made to St. Mary and Joseph Catholic School in Newton Falls.
