Stanley A. Smith, 71, a former Ravenna resident, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, in Mesa, Ariz. Arrangements are being handled by Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville.

Dexter Perrine
Dexter Ray Perrine, 68, of Hallock Sook, Newton Falls, died of leukemia Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at his home. Born Jan. 23, 1931 in Gassaway, W.Va., he was the son of Dexter Boggest and Nellie (Singleton) Perrine. He had lived in Newton Falls since 1950. He worked for Rockwell International for 26 years as a die setter and at the Lordstown General Motors plant for 19 years as a die welder, retiring on Feb. 29, 1996. Mr. Perrine was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Warren. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and reading. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Imogene "Jeannie" (Friend), whom he married Jan. 19, 1956; son, Jerry R. of Newton Falls; daughters, Ms. Cherie R. Yoder of Newton Falls and Miss Nicolett R. Perrine at home; and brothers, William D. of Newton Falls and Vondale (Joe) of Orlando, Fla. A sister, Virginia Hacker, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the James Funeral Home, 8 E. Broad St., Newton Falls. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Church of the Nazarene, Warren. Burial will be at Lutheran Cemetery, Newton Falls.

Margaret R. Phillips
Margaret R. (Whitney-Helm) Phillips, 92, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and formerly of Ravenna, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at the Abbey Nursing Center. Born in Flushing, Ohio, she moved to Florida in 1961 from Ravenna. She was a homemaker, and worked in the Ford Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti, Mich., during World War II. She was a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Lois-Bell McGregor; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, all of St. Petersburg. Her husband of 36 years, Charles H. Helm, died in 1981. Burial was held Monday, in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Petersburg. Arrangements were made through Blount, Curry & Roel Funeral Homes and Cemeteries, Memorial Park Chapel, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Michel Freche
Michel Freche, 80, of Maryland NW, Warren, died Monday morning, May 10, 1999, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown. Born, July 4, 1918 in Saigon, Vietnam, he was the son of Pointier Freche and Thi-Tinh Nguyen. He was a resident of the Warren area for the past 14 years. He served in the French military for 20 years. He practiced as a legal assistant and worked construction in Vietnam, Mr. Freche came to the United States in 1978 and received his U.S. citizenship in 1998. He enjoyed gardening and was a handyman. Survivors include his wife, Nga Freche, whom he married in 1943; son, Leon Freche of Limoges, France; daughters, Helen Kruse of Warren, Juliette Schodjt of Chambersburg, Pa., and Madeleine Freche of Paris, France; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; five brothers and sisters in Vietnam. Visitation will be one hour to 7 p.m. services Thursday at McFarland & Son Funeral home, 271 N. Park Ave., Warren.

Donald Salamone
Donald Salamone, 49, of Warrensville Heights, died Monday May 10, 1999, at home. Born Jan. 31, 1950 in Cleveland, he was the son of Dominic and Angela Salamone. He formerly lived in Kent. Mr. Salamone was a food manager at the Miles Road Market in Solon. Survivors include his brother, Joseph; sister, Roseanne DiFalco; and Kathy Reed. His brother, Thomas died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Vales-Kleve Funeral Services, Kindrich, McHugh-Steinbaugh Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road, Solon. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Jude's Church, 4760 Richmond Rd., Warrensville Heights. Burial will be in Hillcrest Mausoleum in Bedford Heights.

Herbert Gear
BRIMFIELD - Herbert N. Gear, 79, died Sunday, May 9, 1999, after a long illness. Born April 17, 1920 in Randolph County, W.Va., he was the son of Arthur and Bessie Gear. He was a Kent and Ravenna area resident most of his life. Mr. Gear retired in 1982 from GoJo Industries in Cuyahoga Falls, where he worked in industrial maintenance. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Myers); sons, Nickoles, at home, Daniel of Diamond and Barry of Hondo, Texas; daughter, Pam Kares of Akron; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, James of Annandale, Va., Arthur of South Hill, Va., Paul of Lynchburg, Va., and Vada Powers of Richmond, Va.; and sisters, Rosalee Poole of Lynchburg, Va. and Laura Mae Perry of North Carolina. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Cora Julian
Cora "Coe" Julian, 87, of Fairdealing, Mo. died Sunday, May 9, 1999, at Westwood Hills Health Care Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Born April 26, 1912 in Louisville, Ill., she was the daughter of William and Imo (Ely) Peters. A former Akron resident, she had lived in Missouri since 1973. Mrs. Julian and her husband, Paul Julian, had operated the Route 88 Auto Sales in Ravenna. She also was a volunteer at the J.J. Pershing Veterans Hospital in Poplar Bluff from 1978 to 1988. She graduated from Burnside Hospital Nursing School in Chicago in 1931. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Gary (Carol) Smith of Fairdealing; grandsons, Douglas Smith of Rootstown and Dennis Smith of Ravenna; and six great-grandchildren. Her husbans, William Romans, died in 1951. Her husband, Paul Julian, died in 1977. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Arrangements were made by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Ralph Eaglen
CHARLESTOWN - Ralph W. Eaglen, 69, died Monday, May 10, 1999, at University Hospital in Cleveland. Born July 25, 1929 in Fairmont, W.Va., he was the son of William and Sadie (Wolfe) Eaglen. He had lived in Charlestown since 1962. Mr. Eaglen was retired from the Ford Motor Co. plant at Walton Hills, where he worked in production and material handling. He was chairman of the Charlestown Township Zoning Commission and was employed by Charlestown Township. He was a member of Unity Masonic Lodge No. 12 in Ravenna. Survivors include his wife, Wilma (Conner) whom he married in August 1949; sons, Ralph Jr. of Ravenna and Robert of Charlestown; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and sister, Erma (Roy) Danley of Morgantown, W.Va. A son, Randy, died previously. There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. Norma Bates officiating. Burial to be in Charlestown Cemetery.

Beatrice Voorhis
A memorial service has been scheduled for Sunday, May 30 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Kent for Beatrice L. Voorhis, who died Friday, May 14, 1999, at Laurel Lakes Nursing Home in Hudson, where she had recently become a resident. Mrs. Voorhis, 86, was the widow of the late Dr. C.C. Voorhis, a prominent Kent general surgeon who maintained offices on North Water Street in Kent. The Voorhis family had resided at their home in Twin Lakes for more than 40 years. Born Dec. 5, 1913 in Indianapolis, Ind., she came with her husband to the Kent area following his service as a combat surgeon in the Pacific theater of World War II. Mrs. Voorhis had a degree in business, but devoted herself mainly to her family, home and friends. She was active in the Robinson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Red Cross Bloodmobile and was a member of Kent Coterie. She was an avid golfer, enjoyed tennis and was a regular at bridge at Twin Lakes Country Club where she and her husband were members. Survivors include her sons, Dr. Charles Voorhis of Panama City, Fla. and Richard of Kent; and two grandchildren, Christopher and Chip. Mrs. Voorhis donated her body to Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Rootstown. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church in Kent. The Rev. Dr. David Palmer and the Rev. Catherine Dunlap will officiate at the service.

Andrew Riggs
GARRETTSVILLE - A memorial service for Andrew Riggs, who died March 8, will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 22 at Garrettsville United Methodist Church. Mr. Riggs, a longtime Garrettsville resident, was a teacher at Garfield Middle School for 25 years. Memorials may be made to the Andrew G. Riggs Language Arts Fund at Garfield Middle School.

Claude Bagley
Claude Bagley, 75, of Warren, died Tuesday May 18, 1999, at home. Arrangements will be announced by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.

George E. Blinn
George E. Blinn, 77, of Inverness, Fla., a former Streetsboro resident, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999 in Florida. Born in Sullivan, Ohio, he was a Streetsboro resident until moving to Inverness 13 years ago. Mr. Blinn was a foreman at Chrysler Corporation until he retired in 1982. He enjoyed the outdoors and woodworking. He was an avid eggshell artist. Survivors include his wife, Maryanne L; sons, John Tarnowski and Ted Tarnowski, both of St. Petersburg, Fla., Joe Tarnowski of Hiram, Ed Tarnowski of Moonachie, N.J., Curtis Haymore of Church Falls, Va.; daughters, Wanda Schmidtke of Lodi, Nawahnee Dudding of Englewood, Colo., Leilani Parks of Lakewood, Colo., Stella Mahles of Moonachie; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place in Florida.

Allyn Andexler
Allyn E. Andexler, 69, of Buffalo, N.Y., died Thursday, May 13, 1999, of cancer. Born June 10, 1929, in Cleveland, he was the son of Ewald and Violet (Priebe) Andexler. He had lived in Ravenna before moving to Buffalo. Mr. Andexler had worked at Evenflo Products in Ravenna and the Firestone store in Kent. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he was stationed in England. Survivors include his wife, Caroline T. (Szumigala); sons, David (Kimberly) of Ravenna and Michael of Buffalo; daughters, Constance (Michael) Walker of Oklahoma and Julianna (Jeffery) Wagner of Buffalo; eight grandchildren; brothers, Donald (Emily) of San Antonio, Texas, Ralph of Houston, Texas, Leonard (Sandra) of Littleton, Mass., Bob of Ravenna, Gerald (Delores) of Aurora; sisters, Dorothy Brown of Byesville, Joanne (Peter) Harjung of Ravenna, Joyce (George) Iagulli of Streetsboro. His sister, Virginia Bisson, died previously. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Buffalo or the American Cancer Society.

Helen M. Purcell
Helen M. Purcell, 85, a native of Mantua and formerly of Kent, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at home. She had been a resident of Port St. Lucie, Fla., for 31 years. Mrs. Purcell was an officer of Purcell's Clothing in Stuart, Fla., for 10 years. The Purcell family operated a clothing store in Kent ffrom 1944 until 1972, when the shop burned in the fire that destroyed a downtown retail block. They also had a store in Hudson. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Stuart. Survivors include her son, Jim (Judy) Purcell of Titusville, Fla.; daughter, Jeanne (Dick) Collette of Vero Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, Chester A. Purcell, died in 1988. Services and burial will be held today in Stuart. Arrangements are being handled by Aycock Funeral Home in Stuart. Memorials may be made to Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, 3229 Burnett Ave., Cincinnati 45229-3095, the First United Methodist Church of Stuart, P.O. Box 539, Stuart 34995 or the Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

Pearl Vannoy
Pearl L. Vannoy, 79, of Navarre, a former Rootstown resident, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at Community Care Center in Alliance. Born Oct. 24, 1919 in Canfield, she was the daughter of Okey and Beatrice Shook. She was a Rootstown resident for 32 years and had lived in Navarre since 1983. Mrs. Vannoy worked for H-W Industries in Kent for 20 years until she retired. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Bucci of Acworth, Ga.; and two grandchildren. Her husband Homer G., whom she married Oct. 23, 1937, died May 26, 1993. Her brothers, Leo and Melvin, and sister, Greathel Moore, died previously. Services were held Monday at Reed Funeral Home in Canton, with the Rev. David Meadows officiating. Burial was in Sunset Hills Burial Park in Canton.

Dorothy Davenport
Dorothy M. (Cooper) Davenport, 76, of Warren died Monday May 24, 1999, at Forum Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 28, 1922 in St. Joseph, Ky., she was the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude (Bevan) Cooper. She grew up in Portage county and was a Warren resident for 55 years. Mrs. Davenport was a telephone operator with the United Telephone Company for 32 years until she retired in 1984. She was a member of St. James Church in Warren and a member of the Zampedro Pioneer Club at United Telephone Co. She graduated from Paris High School in 1940 and enjoyed flowers, gardening and cooking. Survivors include her son, Richard A. of Warren; stepdaughter, Mrs. Charles (Virginia) Montgomery of Portland, Conn.; brothers, Jack of Cambridge, William of Geneva; sisters, Mrs. Bid (Jean) Bidlack of Ravenna and Mrs. Mary Renner of Albuquerque, N.M. Her husband, Howard L., whom she married April 30, 1945, died July 14, 1992. Calling hours will be held one hour before services at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Robert H. Roberts-Clark Memorial Home, 180 Garfield Drive, N.E. Warren, Ohio 44483. Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery.

Walter Schoenstein
MOGADORE - Walter Schoenstein, 68, died Monday, May 24, 1999. Funeral arrangements are to be announced by the Cremation Society of Ohio.

Edward Sexton
Edward V. Sexton, 86, of Hudson, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, W.Va. Born June 12, 1912, in South Caperton, W.Va., he was the son of Edward S. and Annie (Lusk) Sexton. He had lived in Hudson since 1997, and was formerly of Stow and Streetsboro. Mr. Sexton worked for the United Mine Workers and IBEW Local Union No. 71. He was an active member of the Streetsboro Church of God, where he was an usher. Survivors include his sons, Edward (Phyllis) of Streetsboro, Kenneth (Trudy) of Kansas, Donald (Linda) of Strongsville, Larry (Peggy) of Stow, Randall (Judy) of Kent and Gary (Jeanne) of Mogadore; daughters, Janet (Miles) Davis of Cuyahoga Falls, Jean Ann (John) McClung of Hudson, Brenda (Ernie) McGee of Hudson and Martha (Larry) Sarver of Silver Lake; 33 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sister, Margaret Bennett of West Virginia. His wife, Nellie M., died Feb. 16, 1999. Eight of his brothers and three of his sisters also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Streetsboro Church of God, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. J.W. Adkins officiating. Burial will be in Northlawn Memorial Park in Cuyahoga Falls. Memorials may be made to the Streetsboro Church of God, 9267 S.R. 43, Streetsboro, Ohio 44241. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel.

John Hollendonner
Former Randolph resident, John Hollendonner, 93, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, in The Alliance Community Hospital. Born Sept. 16, 1905, in Akron, he was the son of John and Mary (Reisinger) Hollendonner. Mr. Hollendonner retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company of Akron in 1967, at age 62, where he had been with the maintenance department. He was a member of the St. Joseph Church of Randolph, the Urichsville Eagles Club and the Goodyear Retirees Club. He was a life member of the Hey Jack Sportsman's Club of Dennison and was active in the local senior citizens clubs. Survivors include his wife, Grace A. (Nemeth); sons, John J. (Donna) of Atwater and Carl D. (Linda) of Randolph; daughters, Grace M. (Clyde) Wise of Atwater and Sue L. (Junior) Miller of Paris Township; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be held one hour prior to the 2 p.m. service on Wednesday at The Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Atwater Chapel. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Randolph.

Helen Cowaski
WINDHAM - Helen L. Cowaski, 69, of Windham, died Friday, May 28, 1999, in Cambridge. Survivors include five sons and two daughters. There are no services. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the F.J. Corrigan Funeral Home of Orange Village.

James Davis
James A. Davis, 78, of Newton Falls, died Sunday May 30, 1999 in Bardstown, Ky. Arrangements will be announced by the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Bradley Ellis
AURORA - Bradley H. Ellis, 50, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after complications of a heart attack. Born April 9, 1949, he was the son of Lawrence and Eileen (Wing) Ellis. He had lived in Aurora since 1980. Mr. Ellis worked most recently as an application specialist for Davey Tree Expert Co. in its Oakwood Village office. He previously worked for Tru-green Chemlawn. He loved horticulture, and his other interests was his horse and sheep that he raised in Aurora. Survivors include his wife Judy, whom he married in 1980; son, Doug of Mantua; daughter, Kimberly Fogle of Columbus; mother, Eileen; brother, Kent of St. Croix; and sister, Anita Bailey of New York. His sister, Elaine died previously. There will be no calling hours or services. The Kindrich-McHugh Steinbauer Funeral Home in Solon is handling the arrangements.
