Eli Russ, 73
Eli Russ, 73, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Tallmadge, died unexpectedly Friday, June 4, 1999. Born Feb. 1, 1926, in Akron, he moved to Venice in 1989. He was a Freedom High School graduate. Mr. Russ retired in 1988 as credit manager for Parker Hanifin Corp. in Cleveland. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was past master of Tallmadge Masonic Lodge No. 756. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Ruth, to whom he was married 49 years; son, Steve of Akron; daughter, Nancy of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren; and brother, James of Shalersville. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

James Nagella Jr., 48
A memorial Mass will be held Friday for former Ravenna resident James Nagella Jr., 48, who died Thursday, May 27, 1999, in Carrollton, Texas, after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. Born Aug. 17, 1950 in Ravenna, he was the son of James Sr. and Angela (Delano) Nagella. He graduated from Ravenna High School, Akron St. Thomas School of Radiology and Wesleyan College of Texas. Survivors include his wife, Patricia (Janczewski); sons, Christopher and Trey, both of Texas; one grandchild; parents, Jim and Angela of Ravenna; brother, Stephen of Ravenna; sister, Beth Ann (Bill) Stone of Ravenna; and grandmother, Josephine Delano. Cremation has taken place in Texas. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna. Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or Hospice Care, 1140 Empire Central St., 235, Dallas, Texas 75247.

Kenneth Stansberry
STOW - Kenneth Stansberry, 72, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at The Hospice Care Center in Copley after an extended illness. Arrangements will be announced by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.

Teresa Defer
Teresa Defer, 94, of Twinsburg Township, died Monday June 21, 1999, at her home. Born Oct. 29, 1904 in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Antonio and Josephine (Caravarto) Antonietti. Formerly of Streetsboro, she lived in Twinsburg for the past 32 years. Mrs. Defer was a homemaker. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. James (Marjorie) Thomas of Streetsboro; seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Michael E., died Feb. 9, 1977. Her son, Ernest, died April 5, 1984. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Shorts Funeral Home in Streetsboro, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Steven Hutchinson officiating. Pearl McKenzie
Pearl L. McKenzie, 79, of Ravenna, died Sunday, June 20, 1999 at Cleveland Clinic following several months of failing health. Born Nov. 17, 1919 in Meyersdale, Pa., she was the daughter of Henry and Mae (Jones) Shockey. She was an area resident most of her life. Mrs. McKenzie retired in 1981 from Ametek-Lamb Electric Co. in Kent after 25 years. Survivors include her daughter, Darlene; brother, Harold Shockey of Johnstown, Pa.; and sisters, Verda Werner of Finzel, Md., and Charlotte Willey of Barberton. Her husband, Raymond C., died in March 1998. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, Md., with Mr. Benny Werner officiating. Burial will be in Finzel (Md.) Cemetery.

Darrell Patterson
Darrell Patterson, 63, of Ravenna, died Monday, June 21, 1999, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born June 17, 1936 in Northfield, he was the son of Wilson E. and Teresa (VanWormer) Patterson. He was a 30-year resident of Ravenna. Mr. Patterson was employed in maintenance for Riddle Properties and Simco Management. He attended Bethel Baptist Church and was a member of the Ravenna Eagles, Ravenna V.F.W., Ravenna American Legion and the Ravenna Rod and Gun Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann (Lansky), to whom he was married 22 years; daughter, Theresa Hamilton of Ravenna; brother, Dana of Florida; sisters, Margie Berry of Florida and Jenny Whigham of Kentucky; four grandchildren; and mother, Teresa VanWormer of Kentucky. A brother and a sisters died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna, with the Rev. Richard Skiver officiating. Memorials may be made to the Ravenna American Legion or Ravenna Eagles.

Timothy Moff
ROOTSTOWN - Timothy L. Moff, 35, died Sunday, June 20, 1999. Born Feb. 25, 1964 in Ravenna, he was the son of Thomas and Delores (Memmer) Moff. He was a 1983 Rootstown High School graduate. Mr. Moff had worked for Paeco Rubber for 13 years. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. Survivors include his wife, Lauretta (Farmer); brothers, James Moff and Edward Baer Jr., both of Rootstown; stepsisters, Rebecca Uhl and Melaney Powell, both of Akron; mother, Delores Baer of Rootstown; and grandmother, Agnes Memmer. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. C.T. Mathews officiating.

Janet Caris
Janet Ruth Caris, 94, of Ravenna, died Monday, June 21, 1999, at Maple Wood Care Centre of Streetsboro. Born July 28, 1904 in Mt. Pleasant, Pa., she was the daughter of Braden and Hattie (Wakefield) Pore. She had lived in Ravenna since 1920. Mrs. Caris was a retired nurse. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ravenna. Survivors include her adopted daughter, Dorothy Olds of Virginia. Her husband, Charles, died in October, 1971. Her sisters, Jean Decker and Helen Evans, died previously. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna, with the Rev. Thomas Poremba officiating. Arrangements were made by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Carol Loftin
Carol June Loftin, 71, of Ravenna, died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at her home following a long illness. Survivors include her husband, Herbert; sons, Leigh (Loren) of Rock Island, Ill., Herbert L. (Karen) and Richard (Renee) both of Ravenna,and daughters, Susan (Anthony) Johnson of Akron, Jennifer (John) Miller of Kent, Melanie Henson (Ed) Kaminski of Kent, Debra (Anthony) Howze of Charlotte, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and sister, JoAnn Proctor of Kent. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Maple Grove Cemetery Chapel of Ravenna, with the Rev. Anthony Johnson officiating. Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, is handling arrangements. Condolences may be sent to 4241 Arbeco St., Ravenna.

Helen Corrigan
NELSON - Helen M. Corrigan, 83, died Monday, June 21, 1999, at Robinson Memorial Hospital, Ravenna. Born June 23, 1915 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Stephen and Rose Nagy. Mrs. Corrigan was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Ambrose Church in Garrettsville. Survivors include her son, Anthony J. of Kansas City, Kan.; daughters, Peggy (Michael) Purcell of Cleveland, Marcia J. (Jon Sr.) Jastromb of Hudson and Kathy (Joseph) Leman of Parkman; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Judy Nagy of Cleveland. Her husband, Joseph T., died in 1986. A brother, Louis, also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Ambrose Church in Garrettsville, with the Rev. Richard Pentello officiating. Burial will be in Overlook Cemetery in Parkman.

Raymond Miller
Aurora native Raymond Miller, 77, of 40150 Chelton Hill, Spartansburg, Pa., died Wednesday, June 23, 1999 at his home. Born May 4, 1922 in Aurora, he was the son of Elden and Ellen (Stutzman) Miller. He was reared and educated in in Aurora, where he lived until 1959, when he moved to Spartansburg. Mr. Miller owned and operated a dairy farm and hauled livestock. For the last 25 years, his sons, Rodney and Russell, had been in partnership with him. He was a member of the Valley View Mennonite Church in Spartanburg, where he had been treasurer for 25 years. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine I. (Roth), whom he married Jan. 1, 1945; sons, James of Centerville, Pa., Elden (Barbara) of Union City, Pa., and Rodney, Russell (Elizabeth) and Chris (Kym), all of Spartansburg, Pa.; daughters, Karen (Marshall) Shreve of Union City, Pa., and Kaye (Sidney) Johnson of Spartansburg, Pa.; 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and brothers, LeMar (Evelyn) of Kinsman, and William (Jean) and Howard (Edna), both of Aurora. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today at Bracken Funeral Home, 211 Mechanic St., Spartansburg, Pa. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Valley View Mennonite Church in Spartansburg, Pa., with the Rev. Arland Miller and Elder Rob Esh officiating. Marguerite Fiscus
Marguerite C. Fiscus, 87, of New Castle, Pa., the mother of Peggy (Richard) Turner of Rootstown, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Fiscus was a teacher for New Castle Area Schools. In addition to Mrs. Turner, survivors include her sons, Dwight C. of Myersdale, Pa., and Edwin L. of Cary, N.J.; daughter, Adele (Richard) Bentley of Big Run, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister. One brother and three sisters died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 p.m. until services at 3 p.m. today at R. Harvey Hurd
Former Streetsboro resident Harvey J. Hurd, 82, of Winter Springs, Fla., died Wednesday, June 2, 1999. Born Feb. 4, 1917 in Ravenna, he was the son of Benjamin and Sarah Hurd. He had lived in Streetsboro from 1957 to 1977, when he moved to Orlando, Fla. Mr. Hurd retired from Sun Oil Co. in Cleveland in 1975. He was an active member of the Streetsboro Lions Club and was King Lion in 1974. He was given life membership to Lions International in 1996. He volunteered with the Streetsboro Fair Board, the County Preventorium and the Boy Scouts. He also drove for Handi-Cab of Central Florida for several years, transporting disabled patients to hospitals. He enjoyed bowling and square dancing. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Ruth (Reid); sons, Laurence (Sharon) of Twinsburg and Theadore of Streetsboro; daughter, Peggy Mita of Winter Springs; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and son-in-law Dayrl Van Bogart of Twinsburg. His daughter, Hope Van Bogart, died in 1996. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel, with the Rev. Patricia Jefferies officiating. Private burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Streetsboro.

Deborah Frank
Deborah J. Frank, 43, of Jacksonville, Fla., who was a pharmacist in Ravenna until she moved to Florida, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999. Mrs. Frank graduated from the University of Toledo Pharmacy School in 1980. She practiced as a registered pharmacist for 12 years in Ravenna, where she met her husband, Ronald, through friends of Dr. Bob Smith and Bill Wilson. In 1994, she and her family moved to Jacksonville, where she worked at Nations Health Care. She attended Mandarin Christian Church. Survivors include her husband, Ronald H.; son, Randy; daughter, Rachel; father and stepmother, Marvin (Annette) Stanford of Daytona Beach, Fla.; sister, Peggy Lige of Los Angeles, Calif.; and stepbrother, Howard Munding of Phoenix, Ariz. Her mother, Opal J. (Bradley), died in June 1966. Her brother, Dennis, died in 1965. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eternity Funeral Home, 1650 Art Museum Drive, Jacksonville, Fla., 32207. Lawrence Spreng
Services will be held Saturday for Lawrence "Larry" J. Spreng, 45, of Mantua, who died Wednesday, June 23, 1999, when he fell from his bicycle down a ravine in a wooded area behind 700 Rock Creek Drive in Aurora. Born Dec. 29, 1953 in Cleveland, he was the son of Joseph J. and Rose (Germaine) Spreng. A former Shalersville resident, he had lived in Mantua since 1995. Mr. Spreng had worked at Pizza Hut in Streetsboro for eight years. He formerly attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Streetsboro. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed all sports. Survivors include his sister, Diana (Timothy) Bodnar of Mantua; one nephew; one niece; and one great-nephew. His father, Joseph, died in 1993; his mother, Rose, died in 1968; and brother, Donald, died in 1962. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. James Lang officiating. Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon.
