Vernon E. Bosau
MANTUA - Vernon E. Bosau, 85, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at Altercare of Ravenna after a long illness. Born Jan. 14, 1915 in Cleveland, he was the son of Roy and Ruby (Miller) Bosau. He grew up in Cleveland and was a graduate of South High School. He had lived in the Mantua and Shalersville area since 1960. He was employed for 25 years as an appraiser for the Federal Housing Administration in the agency's Youngstown office, which he managed at the time of his retirement in 1985. Mr. Bosau was a member of Euclid Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed doing oil paintings of landscapes, completing many over the years. He also wrote brief family articles for the Plain Dealer in the 1950s. Prior to the death of his wife, they enjoyed traveling together in and out of the U.S. He also traveled with his daughter and grandchildren to Gettysburg, Pa., on several occasions. He was an avid baseball and football fan, and his sense of humor earned him the nickname "Bugs Bunny" to family and friends. Survivors include his daughter, Judie Bosau-Allen of Mantua; two grandchildren; and sister, Arline Stover of Broadview Heights. His wife, Doris M., whom he married March 29, 1941, died Aug. 27, 1990. A brother, Walte, died previously. No calling hours will be held. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg. Green's Funeral Home in Mantua is in charge of arrangements.

George Albright Hills
AURORA - George Albright Hills, 74, died of cancer Sunday, July 9, 2000 at his home. Born Aug. 12, 1925 in Cleveland, he was the son of Virgil A. and Gertrude (Harbaugh) Hills. He was reared in Cleveland and moved to Aurora in 1957. Mr. Hills attended Miami University and was the building commissioner of Cleveland Heights from 1958 to 1985. He attained the rank of corporal in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. He trained racing pigeons, earning many trophies for his accomplishments in that field. Survivors include his wife, Betty (Filson), to whom he was married 50 years; daughter, Patricia Ann (Charles) Becker; one grandchild; and brother, David. A brother, Robert, died previously. Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Kindrich-McHugh Steinbauer Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road, Solon, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Charles Mazanek
Charles Mazanek, 84, died Sunday, July 9, 2000. Born May 21, 1916 in Kent, he was the son of Anthony Sr. and Victoria Mazanek. He was a life resident of the Akron-Kent area. Mr. Mazanek retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron in 1981. He was a machinist. A World War II veteran, he served in China for three years with General Chennault's "Flying Tigers." He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3703 in Kent, PLAV Post No. 32, Goodyear Engineering Fishing Club, Goodyear 25-Year Club and St. Martha Church in Akron. Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie, to whom he was married 47 years; brother, Anthony Jr. (Rosemary) of Kent; sisters, Jean Pacic of Kent and Irene (Rhoetus) Robinson of Akron; and sister-in-law, Louise Henico of Tallmadge. Ruth Marie Miller
Ruth Marie Miller, 62, of 5826 Weaver Road, Berlin Center, died Monday, July 10, 1000, at her home. Born May 12, 1938 in Ravenna, she was the daughter of William O. and Lillian (Phelps) Hanna. Mrs. Miller was a homemaker. She enjoyed bluegrass music and flowers. Survivors include her husband, Louis Miller, whom she married Oct. 10, 1972; brother, Charles Hanna of Kansas City, Mo.; and sisters, Judy Reedy of Deerfield, Debra Griffin of Randolph, Norene Rinehart of Randolph and Diana Whetsel of Rootstown. Her parents and a half-brother, Billy Hanna, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lane Funeral Home, 65 N. Eunice Thelma Short
Eunice Thelma Short, 77, of Harris Street, Kent, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at her home. Born Jan. 21, 1923, in Senatobia, Miss., she was the daughter of Carey and Mary Lou (Hill) Cox. Mrs. Short was a member of Spelman Chapel AME Church in Kent for many years. Survivors include her son, Herbert Calvin of Bedford; daughters, Deloris Short Madget of Richmond, Calif. and Merrellene Short Goins of Hercules, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, Wrennie Cox of Memphis, Tenn.; and sisters, Pauline Baker of Denver, Walula Saucedo of Chicago and Christine Johnson of Batesville, Miss. Her husband, Rogaster, died in 1970. Her son, Lewis L. Sr.; granddaughter, Ginger; three brothers and two sisters died previously. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Spelman Chapel AME Church in Kent, where services will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. James H. Walker officiating. Ronald B. Speegle
EDINBURG - Ronald B. Speegle, 65, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Aug. 21, 1934 in Cullmann County, Ala., he was the son of Bunnie and Irene (Drake) Speegle. He had lived in Edinburg since 1992. Mr. Speegle was a mail carrier until he retired from the Ravenna Post Office in 1987. Mr. Speegle was a member of the Italian American Society of Ravenna, Canadian Club and Ravenna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1055. He coached in the Ravenna Hot Stove league for 10 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife, Yoriko (FuKui), to whom he was married 45 years; son, John of Streetsboro; daughter, Diana (DeeDee) of Ravenna; four grandchildren; brothers, John and Leroy, both of Akron; sisters, Helen Mason of Alabama, Louella Atkins of Louisiana, Sue Leonard of New Waterford, and Milly, Sherry and Janet, all of Akron. Lena R. De Simio, 84
Lena R. De Simio, 84, of Ravenna, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000. Born April 29, 1916, she was the daughter of Ben V. and Carmella (Lapicerella) De Simio. She had been an area resident all of her life. Miss De Simio retired from the Rootstown school system as a teacher after 35 years. She was a Kent State University graduate. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna. Survivors include her brother, Louis (Marion) of Ravenna; and sister, Grace (Richard) Weber of Youngstown. Several brothers and sisters died previously. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna. Clara Goss, 97
Clara Goss, 97, of Ravenna died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna. Born Sept. 18, 1902, in Edinburg, she was the daughter of William A. and Mary A. (Jenkins) Goss. She had lived in Ravenna for 89 years. Miss Goss was retired from the Akron City Schools, where she was a teacher. She was a member of First Congregational Church of Ravenna. She was a graduate of the University of Akron and Boston University. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed sports, arts and travel. Survivors include her friend, Margaret Oechsner of Ravenna. A sister, Ethel, and three infant siblings died previously. There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Burial will be in Edinburg Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Portage County Gardeners or the Reed Memorial Library in Ravenna.

CHARLESTOWN - June E. Spencer, 71, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital iin Ravenna. Born Feb. 2, 1929, in Geauga Lake, she was a daughter of Horace S. and Nellie M. (Houseman) Egbert. She had lived in Charlestown for 16 years, moving there from Shalersville. Mrs. Spencer was a licensed practical nurse. She had worked at the Portage County Nursing Home, Longmeadow Care Center and Portage County Access to Independence MR/DD. She was a member of the Ravenna Assembly of God and Licensed Practical Nurses Association of Ohio. Survivors include her husband, Max E.; son, Daniel (Robin) of Charlestown; daughter, Suzanne (Dennis) Gauding of Pennsylvania;eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; andbrother, H. Delbert (Christine) Egbert of Arizona. A son, Mark; brothers, Russell, Bruce and Glenn Egbert; and sister, Shirley Cockerham, died previously. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until services at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ravenna Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Steve Huskey will officiate. Rose (Evelyn) Miller, 68, of 4882 Eagle Creek, Leavittsburg, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000 at St. Joseph's Health Center after a four-month illness. Born Nov. 17, 1931, in Hastings, W.Va., she was the daughter of Howard J. and Stella (McCoy) Fluharty. She had lived in Newton Falls since 1948. Ms. Miller was a homemaker. She enjoyed bingo, fishing and gardening. Survivors include her sons James E. Morgan of Lake Milton, William N. Morgan of Garrettsville and Roger G. Morgan of Warren; sisters, Doris Jean Pitts and Brenda K. Loomis, both of Leavittsburg, Teresa M. Butler and Tina M. Quade, both of Warren, Paula S. Jones of Newton Falls, and Pamula A. Spurk of Southington; 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A sister, Thelma Jewell, died previously. Agnes Evelyn Santa, 81, of Silver Meadows, Kent, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000 at Kent Health Care Center. Born Feb. 15, 1919, in Youngstown, she was the daughter of James and Edith (Bennet) Scarborough. She was a member of the Kent United Methodist Church. Survivors include her son, Stanley of Omaha, Nebraska; daughters, Jan (Bill) Taylor of Kent and Betty Santa of Kent; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her husband, Stanley, son, James and sisters, Ruth Cartwright, Mildred Rea and Helen Czekanski all died previously. There will be no calling hours. Phil Barry
Phil Barry, 91, of Beaver Falls, Pa., died Thursday, July 13, 2000, after a brief illness. Born on June 13, 1909, in St. Mary's, W.Va., he was a resident of Lake Cable and more recently Beaver Falls, Pa. Mr. Barry was a graduate of Kent State University, where he completed his master's degree in 1941. He taught school and coached sports in East Sparta and Hartville. He later became superintendent of Marlboro Schools, Lake Local Schools and West Jefferson Public Schools until retiring in 1971. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ. He was a member of the Lions Club and very active in the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, which he served as president in 1986. He also was a scoutmaster of Troop #45, B.S.A. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Marian Flower Barry, of Beaver Falls, Pa.; son, Eldon (Jean) Barry of Beaver, Pa.; daughter, Louise (David) Rush of Torreon, Mexico; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grand children. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Schneeberger Funeral Home and one hour prior to services, which will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ. ALLIANCE - George M. Braidic, 75, of Homeworth Road in Alliance, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at home. Born Jan. 8, 1925, to Matthew and Lucille (Gregovich) Braidic, he had lived in Alliance all his life. Mr. Braidic retired from S.A. Communle of Akron where he worked as a sprinkler fitter. He also was the former owner of LaMichelle Ceramics in Alliance. He served with the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Pokomoke and the U.S.S. Saratoga. He was a World War II veteran. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He also belonged to the V.F.W. Post 1036 and its Honor Guard and Union Local No. 669 of the United Auto Sprinkler Fitters. Survivors include his wife, Martha R. "Ruth" (Votaw), to whom he had been married for 28 years; daughters, Sally Handrych and Connie Albright, both of Alliance, and Donna Lee Krug of Canal Fulton; step-son, James R. Smith of Dunedin, Fla.; step-daughters, Judith Pittman and Polly Montgomery, both of Salem, and Jodene Rasile of Alliance; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nine step-grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild; brother, Edward Braidic of Sebring; sisters, Dorothy Ardell of Boardman, Frances Fugate of Alliance and Kathryn Fairbanks of Sebring. Va., she was the daughter of Oswell and Flora (Neel) Messenger. She had lived in Atwater since 1951. Survivors include her daughter, Nancy (Wally) Howes of Atwater; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Lawrence Messenger of Jane Lew, W. Va.; Hartzell Messenger of Quiet Dell, W. Eva A. Paoloni, 78, of Skyview Drive, Kent, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born June 3, 1922, in Kent, she was the daughter of Alec and Mary (Posavac) Nedel. Mrs. Paoloni was a 1940 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent. She worked as a secretary at Twin Coach, Cleveland Twist Drill, Dr. Vic Yahner, D.D.S., Tree City Mold and Machine Co. and attorney Robert Paoloni. She was a member of St. Patrick Church in Kent. She had formerly belonged to the Kent Junior Mothers and the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild. Survivors include her husband, Alex J., to whom she had been married for 55 years; sons, Robert (Susan) of Kent, Joseph of Kent and John (Catherine) of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; daughter, Mary Louise (Ged) Schwekert of MIfflinburg, Pa.; nine grandchildren; sisters, Ann Spallino of Akron, Catherine (Ike) Kilbourne of Kent and Rose (Steve) Sabo of Barberton; half-brother Mark Nedel of Kent; and sister-in-law Ria Nedel of Colorado Springs, Colo. Her brother George M. Nedel and sisters, Pauline Horner and Elizabeth Nedel, died previously. Arthur Koerner
Arthur Koerner, 79, of Newcomer Road, Kent, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Nov. 22 1920, in Kent, he was the son of Arthur C. and Mildred (Wehl) Koerner. Mr. Koerner was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 83rd Thunderbolt Infantry. He participated in the Normandy, Ardennes, Brittany, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns, receiving the Bronze Star, Purple Heart with two clusters, the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, five Battle Stars and the Victory Medal. He retired after 30 years from the United States Postal Service as a postal carrier. He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Kent, past commander of the VFW Captain Brady Post #3703, American Legion Post 531 in Little Valley, N.Y., played baseball for the Kentors and Twin Coach and was an avid hunter. Survivors include his wife, Agnes (Pudloski), to whom he had been married for 57 years; sons, Arthur S. (Barcy) of Kent, Rudy (Patti) of Kent and Jeff of Kent; daughters, Patty (Bob) Love of Uniontown, Susie (Tom) Poulten of Centerville and Cathy (John) Sopko of Kent; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucy Randal of Akron, Estelle (Maburn) Keeton of Tollhouse, Calif. and Emma Reed of Kent. His brother, Walter, and sister, Mary Kelley, died previously. Ella M. Wilson
Ella M. Wilson, 61, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000. Born March 31, 1939, in Lexington, Ky., she was the daughter of Samuel and Ella Mae McEwen. She attended The University of Akron and went on to earn her master's and doctorate degrees at Kent State University. She taught at Hiram College for 14 years and was vice president of student affairs at Wilberforce University. She was a member of the United A.M.E. Church of Xenia, where she acted as a missionary, stewardess and participated in the women of wisdom group. She also was an active member of Spelman A.M.E. in Kent, where she wrote and directed several plays. She was a member of several professional organizations in education, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and a member of the Wilberforce chapter of Links Inc. She also was a member of the Greene Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. Survivors include her sons, Joseph Wray of Southfield, Mich., Jeffrey Wray of East Lansing, Mich., Jonathan Wray of Akron, Mark Wilson of North Carolina; daughters, Debbie Evans of Akron, Mary David of Hartville, N.C. and Denise Harris of Akron; five grandchildren; mother, Ella Mae Porter of Medina; brothers, Samuel McEwen of Columbia, Md., Charles McEwen of Detroit, Mich., Kenneth McEwen of Akron and Paul McEwen of Medina; sisters, Jean Evans of Lancaster, Calif. and Dawn McEwen of Chicago. Her husbands, Joe L. Wray, whom she married in March 1957, died in 1968, and Milton E. Wilson, whom she married in January 1983, died in 1989. Her son, Jerrold, died in 1966. Calling hours will be held from 4 p.m. today until the 5 p.m. service at United A.M.E. Church in Xenia with the Rev. Antoni Sinkfil officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery in Medina. John D. Moyer
John D. Moyer, 32, of Troy Township, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights of cancer. Born Dec. 13, 1967, in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was the son of David and Shirley (Voynovich) Moyer. Mr. Moyer lived in the Cleveland area for several years and was a 1986 graduate of Kenston High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves, serving from 1986 to 1998. He attended Lakeland Community College in Mentor and attended Hiram College. He was employed as assistant manager of food service at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed model ship making and coin collecting. Survivors include his mother, Shirley (Donald) Klimas of Troy Township; father, David, of Euclid; sister, Kaila Mortach of Troy; grandmothers, Mildred (Zakas) Voynovich of Garrettsville and Isabelle of Madison and fiancee, Amy Genberg, of Blowing Rock, N.C. Grandfathers, John J. Voynovich Sr., died Aug. 8, 1999, and Maurice died on Sept. 13, 1991. B.J. Jackson
MANTUA - B.J. Jackson, 90, of Mantua, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Sept. 5, 1909, in Orange Township, he was the son of Andrew and Ada (Sargent) Jackson. Formerly of Russell Township, he was a Mantua area resident the past 20 years. He was employed as a machinist at Dee Pole Machine Co. in Geauga County for several years as well as being self-employed clearing lots for new home construction sites for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his brother, Richard Bolton, of Berea. His brother, Vernon, and sister, Viette, died previously. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township. Arrangements are handled by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.

Florence Murton, 89
Florence E. Murton, 89, of Ravenna, who is survived by 186 direct descendants, including 13 children, died Sunday, July 16, 2000 at her home. Born Jan. 19, 1910 in Newbury, Ohio, she was the daughter of Ulrich and Mary Anna Kampf. Survivors include her sons, Richard of Ellabell, Ga., George of Brunswick, Carl of Shalersville and Ervin of Chicago; daughters, Mary Quiggly of Montville, Ohio, Florence Reynolds of Deposit, N.Y., Elizabeth Bolster of Hancock, N.Y., Mabel and Sarah Murton, both of Shalersville, Nancy Howard of Penbroke, Ga., Madeline Duncan of Oakwood, Ore., Sally Singleton of Rootstown, and Francis Murton of Willoughby; 57 grandchildren; 88 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Nellie Sary. Her husband, John, died in 1973. Her son, Walter, and daughters, Jean Henderson and Louise, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. until services at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. The Rev. Ken Morrison officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Shalersville.
