Mary R. Collins, 87, of Ravenna Township, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born July 1, 1913, in Ravenna, she was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Vogler) Ullom. She was a lifelong Ravenna resident. Mrs. Collins was a homemaker. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna. Survivors include her sons, James Collins and Mark Wilson, both of Ravenna, and Chester Collins Jr. of North Carolina; daughters, Leona Ann Williams and Ardis Mortimer, both of Rootstown; Lola Kennell of Mogadore; Anita Jenkins of Deerfield; Irene Shaffer, Laura Kelly and Pamela Oostdyke, all of Ravenna, Mary Pritchard of North Carolina and Mary Louise Adams of Peninsula; 30 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; sister, Ada Warner of Ravenna. Her husband, Chester, died on April 10, 1990. Son, Derrell; daughter, Winona Wilson; one brother and two sisters died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Msgr. Robert Sabatino officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.

Leroy M. "Pete" Hostetler, 89, of Ravenna, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at his residence. Arrangements to be announced by the Shorts Funeral Homes Ravenna Chapel.

William A. Chipps Sr.
WINDHAM - William A. Chipps Sr., 77, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Feb. 7, 1924, in Pennsboro, W.Va., he was the son of Lonny and Mary (Hartline) Chipps. He had been a Windham resident since 1945. Mr. Chipps was a mixer operator with Filmco in Aurora prior to his retirement. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Alberta (Claflin); sons, William A. Jr. (Nancy) of Tallmadge and Dwayne (Ginny) of Arizona; daughters, Sandra (Jim) Swiger of Newton Falls and Elaine (Jim) Honabach of Chino, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and brothers Robert of Buford, S.C. and Carl Chipps of Bladenbourgs, Md. Seven brothers and sisters died previously. A private family service will be held with the Rev. Ruth Chartier officiating. Shorts Funeral Homes, Ravenna Chapel, is handling arrangements. Burial will be in Edinburg Cemetery in Edinburg.

Steve Lerch
Steve Lerch, 80, of Warren, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at his home. Born Nov. 7, 1920, in Lordstown, he was the son of Michael and Suzzana (Kochan) Lerch. He lived in the Warren area his entire life. Mr. Lerch had been employed as a steel worker for U.S. Steel for 40 years before his retirement in 1980. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Lordstown Lutheran Church and its men's group. He liked hunting, sports and gardening. Survivors include his son, Dennis of Lordstown; daughters, Linda (Mark) Falatic of Newton Falls, Karen Lerch of Niles and Kathy Lerch of Lordstown; and one grandchild. His wife, Betty Jane (Bacher), whom he married May 17, 1952; brothers Michael, John and Paul; and sisters Julia Lott and Susan Cercel died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Lordstown Lutheran Church. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Lordstown Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by James Funeral Homes in Newton Falls.

STOW - Lena I. Brady, 90, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001. Born Jan. 16, 1911 in Davis, W.Va., she was the daughter of Domonic and Mary Carmel Antoline. Mrs. Brady was a founding member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Stow. She was retired from the W.T. Grant Co. Survivors include her sons, James (Therese) of Nashville, Tenn. and Joseph of Stow; daughter, Mary Schlarb (Don Zieber) of Brimfield; three grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and sisters, Isabella Sampson and Mary Owens of Elkins, W.Va. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Dunn-Quigley-Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home in Stow. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Stow. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

Phyllis V. Simms
Phyllis V. Simms, 75, of Ravenna, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. She was born Oct. 29, 1925, in New Plymouth. A Stow resident for more than 60 years, Mrs. Simms moved to Ravenna 11 years ago. She retired as vice president of WAKR TV23 with more than 40 years of service. She was an inaugural inductee into the Akron Radio Hall of Fame. Survivors include her son, Brad, of Ravenna. Her brother, Rex, died previously. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Stow Cemetery. Redmon Funeral Home in Stow is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the AMVETS or the American Heart Association.

Sharon M. Klingensmith
Sharon M. Klingensmith, 57, of 2839 Anderson Anthony Road, Warren, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, in Leavittsburg of respiratory failure. Born Aug. 17, 1943, in Coaldale, Pa., she was the daughter of Alfred L. and Eleanor (Zucuski) Krell. She lived in the Southington and Braceville area since 1965 and was formerly of Tamaqua, Pa. Mrs. Klingensmith worked for Packard on the line and also in housekeeping, retiring in 1994 after 25 years service. She enjoyed shopping and taking care of her home. Survivors include her son, Paul Pauley Jr.; three grandchildren; brothers, Alfred L. Krell of Houston, Texas; and Bruce D. Krell of Barnesville, Pa. Private services were held Saturday at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls.

Donald R. Laflin
Donald R. Laflin, 69, of Munroe Falls Road, Kent, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Florida Hospital-Orlando in Orlando. Born July 15, 1931 in Massillon, he was a son of Allen and Ida Laflin. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Mr. Laflin was a 1951 graduate of Washington high School and was active in the Indian Guides. He was a Boy Scout Leader and a swimming merit badge counselor, a Red Cross Water Safety instructor, and he participated in the Red Cross Public Swimming Program. Survivors include his wife Gretchen (Vosper); sons, Bradley (Jane Ferko) of Atlanta, Ga., Gordon (Patricia) of Hudson and Dustin (Tammy) of Kent; and two grandchildren. Three brothers and five sisters died previously. Visitation will be held from noon until 1 p.m. services Saturday at the Kent United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Palmer and the Rev. Kay Dunlap officiating. Burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Animal Protective League of Portage County, Inc., Attn: Ann, P.O. James H. "Bud" Cain, 83
FREEDOM - James H. "Bud" Cain Jr., 83, died Saturday, March 3, 2001 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a long illness. Born Oct. 8, 1917 in Hamilton, he was the son of James and Della (Tickel) Cain Sr. He was a life resident of Freedom Township. Mr. Cain worked as a foreman at Polson Rubber Co. in Garrettsville for 38 years, retiring in 1974. He also worked for many years at the family business, Cain & Sons Garage in Freedom. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, arriving in Morocco, North Africa in 1943. He was stationed in Italy, southern France and Germany before being discharged in October 1945. He earned the Bronze Star, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with six bronze stars and one bronze arrowhead and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Cain was a member of The Family of Jesus Fellowship Church in Ravenna. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Lula B. (Belknap), whom he married Nov. 16, 1946; daughter, Gloria M. Myers of Freedom; brothers, John, Harold (Martha) and Clyde (Alice), all of Freedom, Robert (Pat) of Hiram, Pete (Betty) of Ravenna, Lloyd of Nelson and Don McCort of New Mexico; and sister, Josie (Ned) Underhill of New Mexico. One brother and three sisters died previously. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Samuel S. Goebel officiating. Burial will be in Drakesburg Cemetery in Freedom Township.

Lester R. Hall, 76
Former Ravenna resident Lester R. Hall, 76, of Akron, died Saturday, March 3, 2001 at Akron City Hospital. Born Jan. 17, 1925 in Calhoun County, W. Va., he was the son of Okie and Nancy (McCune) Hall. He had lived in Ravenna for 13 years before moving to Akron last year. Mr. Hall was a tire builder at Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron for 30 years before his retirement. He was a member of St. Peter of the Fields Church in Rootstown. Survivors include his sons, Ralph and Mike MacIntire, both of North Carolina, and Leslie Hall of Akron; daughters, Linda Drurey of Ravenna, Brenda Phillips of Cuyahoga Falls and Marianne Brown of North Canton; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Chester of West Virginia; and sisters, Jean Yost of Cambridge, Ohio and Ivy McCumber and Eloise White, both of West Virginia. His sisters, Essie Skiera, Delsie Spencer, Grace Cunningham and Geneiveve Henderson, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Thomas Crum officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter of the Fields Cemetery in Rootstown.

Linda S. Nolder, 51
Former Portage County resident Linda Sue Nolder, 51, of Akron, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at her home. Born April 1, 1949 in Huntington, W.Va., she was the daughter of Dallas and Madline June (Adkins) Hettinger. She had lived in the Ravenna and Kent areas before moving to Akron two and a half years ago. Mrs. Nolder was a disc jockey and the founder and owner of Angel's Gothic Sound Entertainment of Akron. She was a member of Faith Temple Church of the Living God in Akron. Survivors include her husband, Murl J.; daughters, Kimberlee S. Watts and Jamie A. Watts, both of Akron; and former husband, Keith Watts of Akron. Calling hours will be held from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna.

Michael K. Tulley Sr., 50
RANDOLPH - Michael Kenneth Tulley Sr., 50, died Saturday, March 3, 2001 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born May 24, 1950 in Akron, he was the son of Blonda and Elizabeth (McPherson) Tulley. He had lived in Stow before moving to Randolph three years ago. Mr. Tulley was the owner of Artistic Welding in Kent. Survivors include his wife, Lisa E. (Crites); son, Michael Jr. of Randolph; daughter, Connie (Keith) Henline of Springfield; one grandchild; mother, Elizabeth of Stow; and sister, Cindie White of Randolph. His father; a granddaughter; brothers, William and Curtis; and sister, Barbara Christ, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Floyd Mault officiating. Richard C. Fenstermaker
Richard C. Fenstermaker, 84, of Newton Falls, died Monday, March 5, 2001 at Laurie Ann Nursing Home in Newton Falls. Mr. Fenstermaker worked as a personnel director for Thomas Steel for more than 30 years, retiring in 1978. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Elanor Jane (Markle), whom he married Sept. 5, 1947; stepson, Mark Hutchison of Newton Falls; and sister, Hazel (Fred) Stanley of Newton Falls. A sister, Florence Ida Mowen, died previously. Visitation will be held one hour prior to a 2:30 p.m. memorial service Sunday at First Christian Church in Newton Falls. Cremation has taken place. Ruby (Owens) Smith
Ruby (Owens) Smith, 57, of Akron, the sister of Carrie Munson of Ravenna, died Friday, March 2, 2001 at Hospice Care Center in Akron. Born in Hubb, Miss., she had lived in Akron since 1962. Mrs. Smith was a data entry processor at B & W for more than 14 years. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Akron. In addition to Mrs. Munson, survivors include her husband, Willie; son, Eric Bell of Indiana, Pa.; brothers, Rayford Owens Jr. and Lonnie Owens, both of Akron; sisters, Cathy Miller of Lima and Laura Bright of Akron. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, 529 West Thornton St., Akron. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 1366 Greenwood Ave. in Akron. Howard Allen Brain
Howard Allen Brain, 69, of Sebring, died suddenly Monday, March 5, 2001 at Alliance Community Hospital. Born March 26, 1931 in Salem, he was the son of Stanley and Lillian (Moff) Brain. He had lived in the Atwater and Deerfield areas before moving to Sebring. Mr. Brain was a lab technician at Babcock and Wilcox in Alliance. Survivors include his wife, Catherine (Boyd), to whom he was married for 48 years; son, David of Deerfield; daughters, Catherine (Robert) Gessler of Westerville, Christine Godwin of Westville, Roberta Brock and Janice Brain, both of Alliance, and Lorraine (Paul) van Loenen of Bartow, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A brother, Galen, died previously. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sebring Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Roger Maze officiating. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Memorials can be made to Sebring Church of the Nazarene.

John Jacob DeLeone
John Jacob DeLeone, 63, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, in San Jose, Calif. Born March 23, 1937, he was the son of John and Winnifred (Koster) DeLeone. He was a 1955 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent. Mr. DeLeone was a professor at San Jose City College until he retired. He also worked for IBM. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife, Daniella Magnano of San Jose; and sister, Edris Flowers Kotz of Sandusky. His parents and sister, Mary Catherine Fischer, died previously. Cremation has taken place. Neptune Society of Central California handled arrangements.

Richard H. Kotrlik Sr.
Richard H. Kotrlik Sr., 75, died Tuesday March 6, 2000, at Aurora Manor in Aurora, after a long illness. Born Jan. 19, 1926, in Cleveland, he was the son of Joseph and Martha (Lasca) Kotrlik. Formerly of Bedford and Cleveland, he had lived in Mantua since 1968. Mr. Kotrlik retired in 1972 as plant manager at Lear-Siegler in Cleveland after 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He earned three Purple Hearts. He played men's softball for many years on teams in Bedford and he enjoyed raising dogs. He was an animal lover. Survivors include his sons, Richard Jr. of Mantua, Gary of Garrettsville, Dale (Robbie) of Mantua; daughters, Gayle (Jim) Moore, of Ogden, Utah, Joyce (Dean) Gatto of Mantua and Cheryl (Don) Shields of Hiram; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry of Strongsville; and sister, Diane of Cleveland. A brother, Joseph, and sister, LaVerne Kekeles, died previously. There will be no calling hours nor services. A private family burial will take place. Arrangements are being handled by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.

GARRETTSVILLE - Dorris Swords, 89, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at her home. Born Nov. 7, 1911 in Canton, she was the daughter of William and Ethal (Smith) Cunningham. Mrs. Swords was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader. Survivors include her daughters, Shirley Suntheimer of Kent, and Donna Rarick and Nancy Fairbee, both of Ravenna; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Merle Cunningham of Canton. Her husband, Harry, died Jan. 21, 1993. A brother, Zennas,died previously. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville.

Steve J. Kopinsky
GARRETTSVILLE - Steve J. Kopinsky, 84, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a long illness. Born April 12, 1916, in New Salem, Pa., he was the son of Steve and Catherine (Harosky) Kopinsky. He had lived in Garrettsville for 13 years. Mr. Kopinsky was employed for 23 years at the Ford Motor Company in Brook Park where he was an engine repairman. He retired in 1977. He was a member of the United Auto Workers. Survivors include his brother, Edward (Bertha) of Walton Hills; and sisters, Sister Tharsilla Kopinsky of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Margaret of Garrettsville. His brothers, John and Joe, and sisters, Marie Congelio and Helen Gurkey, died previously. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Garrettsville, with the Rev. Richard Pentello officiating. Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon. Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville is handling arrangements.

Gilbert E. DeMauney
STREETSBORO - Gilbert E. DeMauney, 71, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Dec. 13, 1930, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of George and Evelyn (Johnson) DeMauney. He had lived in Streetsboro since 1995. Mr. DeMauney retired from Illinois Bell, where he had been employed as a PBX Installer. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was a member of American Legion Post No. 685 in Streetsboro and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Phillips, Wis. Survivors include his wife, Elaine (Paul), whom he married in 1963; son, Roy E. of Paletto, Fla.; and brother, Joe (Gen) Gundersen of California. There will be no calling hours or services. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Homes Streetsboro Chapel.
