Dorothy Alma Martin
Dorothy Alma Martin, 74, of North Port, Fla., died unexpectedly Friday, March 2, 2001, at her home. She lived in Shalersville and taught school in Portage County for 27 years, retiring from Crestwood Schools. She was a member of the Kent American Legion, Kent State University Alumni Association and Charlestown Survivors include her daughters, Cynthia J. Foster of Arcadia, Fla., Elzada S. Rowe of Deland, Fla., and Leila A. Ramos of North Port, Fla.; 11 grandchildren;12 great-grandchildren;sister, Betty Mericola of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; and life companion, Charles B. May. Honora "Sis" Arnett
Honora "Sis" Arnett, 83, of Ravenna, died Monday, March 5, 2001 at her home following a period of failing health. Born March 19, 1917 in Akron, she was the daughter of William H. and Honora (Collins) Knox. She had lived in Ravenna since 1945. Mrs. Arnett was employed for many years in retail sales at both Morry's Clothing Store and Kreinberg's Jewelry Store. She was a homemaker. She was active with the Senior Center in Ravenna and was formerly active with Cub Scouting in Ravenna, assuming several positions of leadership in the organization. An animal lover, she was an active supporter of the Animal Protective League in Ravenna, often taking various supplies to the animal shelter. Survivors include son, Douglas (Elizabeth) Arnett of Hiram; three grandchildren; and brother, John Knox of Lakemore, Ohio. Her husband, Clyde, died in 1976. Her longtime companion, Garth Tinkcom, died Dec. 22, 2000. A brother, Leonard Knox, also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Mantua. Catherine Foss, 94
Former Hiram resident Catharine (Reynard) Foss, 94, of Baltimore, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001. Born Jan. 1, 1907, in Toronto, Canada, she was the daughter of Charles O. and Mary E. (Cassil) Reynard. She had grown up in Hiram and considered it her true home. Mrs. Foss taught art and English classes prior to her marriage. She was a graduate of Hiram College. Survivors include her son, John Foss of Okemos, Mich.; daughters, Ruth Drearden of Baltimore, Md. and Mary Foss of Buellton, Calif.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, George of Riverton, N.J. and Ralph of Parma Heights; and a sister, Mary E. MacArthur of Morristown, N.J. Her husband, Maurice F. Foss, died previously. A memorial service will be held in July in Baltimore. Allan R. Horton, 76
Former Rootstown resident Allan Roe Horton, 76, of Harpursville, N.Y., died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, in Johnson City, N.Y. of congestive heart failure following a stroke. Born Jan. 21, 1925, in Rootstown, he was the son of Arthur and Grace Horton. He attended Rootstown School and had lived in Harpursville fo 10 years. Survivors include his brother, Paul (Rachel) of Sun City, Ariz.; and sister, Margaret (Duane) Bell of Sebring, Fla; and several nieces and nephews. His brother, Dr. Robert Horton Sr., died previously. Services were held in Harpursville. Burial was in Homeland Cemetery in Rootstown.

Marvin Blanchard, 62
Former Kent resident Marvin Blanchard, 62, of Akron, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, following an apparent heart attack. Born July 15, 1938, in Cadiz, Ohio, he was the son of Noah and Martha Blanchard. He came to Kent in 1955, living there for many years before moving to Akron. Mr. Blanchard was self-employed. Survivors include his daughter, Elaine of Akron; two grandchildren; brothers, Malcolm of Kent and Dwaine of Reynoldsburg; sisters, Esther, Susan and Sylvia, all of Columbus. His brothers, Noah and Gregory; and sister, Linda, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. until services at noon Saturday at Adams Mason Memorial Chapel, 791 E. Market St., Akron. Emma H. (Conrey) Nicholas
Former Ravenna resident Emma H. (Conrey) Nicholas, 97, of Brooksville, Fla., died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001 at Evergreen Woods Health Center in Brooksville. Mrs. Nicholas had lived in Ravenna for many years before she retired and moved to Florida. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Ladies auxiliary. Survivors include her sister, Grace Smith of Stone Mountain, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. Her husbands, Forest Conrey, and the Rev. Phillip Nicholas, died previously. She was buried in Southampton, Pa. with graveside ceremonies officiated by Chaplain Jay Harold Keiser, her guardian.

Alan C. Tomlinson, 56
PALMYRA - Alan Charles Tomlinson, 56, died Thursday, March 8, 2001 at his home following a short illness. Born March 14, 1944 in Palmyra, he was the son of Elbert Charles and Sophrona (James) Tomlinson. He had lived in the area most of his life. Mr. Tomlinson worked in the Portage area as a carpenter and farmed for more than 25 years. He served on the Portage County Dairy Committee and was on the advisory council of the Southeast Chapter of Future Farmers of America. He was a member of the Baptist Bible Church in Paris. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife, Tommasene S. "Tommie" (Amidon), to whom he was married 25 years; sons, Ty (Amy) of North Benton and Henry (Lori) Michael of Palmyra; daughter, Kimberly (Ray) Baker of Waynesville; seven grandchildren; brothers, Jim (Karen) of Illinois and Herb (Sandra) of Georgia; sisters, Judy (Jerry) Garvin and Janet (Stan) Laskos, both of Palmyra, Charlotte (James) Beatty of Garrettsville and Chris (Tom) Ganley of Kent; and foster sister, Lynn (Ed) Shepherd of Ravenna. Donald T. Sampson Sr.
DEERFIELD - Donald T. Sampson Sr., 87, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at home. Born Sept. 20, 1913, in Mottown, he was the son of William and Lottie (Jenkins) Sampson. A life resident of Deerfield, he was a 1932 graduate of the former Deerfield High School. Mr. Sampson was a machinist for the Wean United of Youngstown until he retired in 1978. He was a member of Palmyra United Methodist Church, Deerfield Charity Masonic Lodge No. 530, Order of the Eastern Star, Palmy Chapter No. 114, and the Deerfield Dandies. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Myers), whom he married March 22, 1937; sons, Donald Jr. of Deerfield and Richard of Marlboro; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and brother, William of Alliance. Mary Ann Pahls
Former Ravenna resident Mary Ann Pahls (Gless) Schuman, 59, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, in Chico, Calif. She was the daughter of Anthony H. and Mary Catherine (Raik) Pahls. She graduated from Villa Maria High School in Pennsylvania and attended Kent State University and Ohio University. Survivors include her children, Cathi (Gless) Esker of New York, Anne Marie (Gless) Sboray of Akron and Mark and Meg Schuman of California; eight grandchildren; and siblings, Anthony "Tony" C. Pahls, Marty (Pahls) Der, Barbara (Pahls) Borton, Larry Pahls, Drew Pahls, Jeannie (Pahls) Van Horn and Joan Pahls Notch. Her parents and a brother, Leo Bernard Pahls, died previously. Andrew Kato
ROOTSTOWN - Andrew Kato, 82, died Monday, March 19, 2001 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a short illness. Born Nov. 2, 1919, in Budapest, Hungary, he was the son of Charles and Julia (Dementer) Kato. He had lived in Rootstown for 40 years. Mr. Kato retired from the Ford Motor Co., Walton Hills plant. He attended New Milford Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Eileen (Carey), to whom he was married 63 years; sons, Cliff (Mickie) of Wilmington, N.C. and Dick (Debbie) of Ravenna; foster son, Charles (Janice) Dopker of Tallmadge; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. His sons, Roger and Bob; and brother, John, died previously. Hoy McCourt
DEERFIELD - Hoy McCourt, 54, of 717 Bandy Road, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at home after a short illness. Born Aug. 9, 1946, in Webster Springs, W.Va., he was the son of Goodridge A. and Esta Maxine (Carpenter) McCourt. He had lived in Deerfield for 30 years. Mr. McCourt was a mechanic with D.J.'s Truck Repair Inc. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he had earned a Good Conduct Medal. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Judith A. (Erta) of Sparks, Nev.; father, Goodridge A. of Webster Springs; stepmother, Isa McCourt of Webster Springs; brothers, Truman and Vance, both of Deerfield, Wesley of Randolph and Goodridge A. Jr. of Columbus; sisters, Nada G. Roosa of Deerfield, Mildred Stanley of Webster Springs and Linda L. Strawser of Ravenna; and former spouse, Carol (Morton) McCourt of Ravenna. Tom H. Mix
DEERFIELD - Tom H. Mix, 68, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a long illness. Born May 2, 1932, in Deerfield, he was the son of Walter A. and Mary P. (Girard) Mix. Mr. Mix retired from YSD Industries of Youngstown, where he worked as a welder. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Deerfield American Legion Post #713 and Ravenna VFW Post #1055. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Barbara (Barrett); brothers, Albert (Margaret) and Wilbur, both of Deerfield and Delbert (Darlene) of Berlin Center; and a sister, Arlene Lopez of Downey, Calif. Johnnie L. Johnson
EDINBURG - Johnnie L. Johnson, 70, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna of natural causes. Born July 27, 1930, in Phillippi, W.Va., he was the son of Jearl and Ottie (Phillips) Johnson. He had lived in Edinburg since 1942. Mr. Johnson had been employed as a millwright with American Steel in Alliance prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Edinburg United Church, Charity Masonic Lodge No. 530, Tadmor Temple, Kent Civil War Society, Ohio State Patrol Auxiliary and the Edinburg Zoning Board. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, June (Dillon), whom he married on April 16, 1954; son, John R. of Kent; daughter, Treva Ann of Ellijay, Ga.; two grandchildren; brother, Charles (Mary Lou) of Edinburg; and sister, Mildred Roth of Jefferson. David James Weber, Sr.
Former Kent resident David James Weber, Sr., 64, of Cape Coral, Fla. died Monday, March 19, 2001 at Cape Coral Hospital in Cape Coral. Born June 30, 1936, in Toledo, he was the son of Lloyd S. and Virginia O. (Bennett) Weber. A Kent resident until he moved to Cape Coral in 1986, he was a 1954 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent. Mr. Weber was a carpenter and a roofer. He attended Kent State University. Survivors include his son, David, Jr. (Beverly) of Ravenna; two grandchildren; and brother, Donald of Roswell, N.M. There will be no local calling hours or services. James G. Harris
Former Rootstown resident James G. Harris, 48, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Monday, March 19, 2001, at a hospital near his home after a short illness. Born Nov. 2, 1952, in Ravenna, he was the son of Robert and Dorothy Harris. He had lived in Rootstown before moving to Florida, then to Nevada. He was a 1971 graduate of Rootstown High School. Mr. Harris was a screen printer and artist. Survivors include his wife, Reah; son, Craig of Stow; stepson, Steven of Connecticut; stepdaughter, Dawn of Naples, Fla.; five grandchildren; mother, Dorothy of Ravenna; brothers, Larry of Ravenna and Jon (Jan) of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and sister, Vikki (Larry) Johnson of Akron. Lois M. Lohr
Lois M. Lohr, 84, of Hillsboro Beach, Fla., a former Kent resident, died March 16, 2001. Mrs. Lohr taught in the Kent school district until her retirement in 1984. She and her husband, Harry, who was principal of Central Elementary School in Kent for many years until he retired, moved to Hillsboro Beach 13 years ago. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and also was a member of the Kent United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Harry, to whom she was married 60 years; son, Robert (Linda) Lohr of Napierville, Ill.; daughters, Judith (Gerald) Talcott of Hillsboro Beach, Fla., and Marjorie Fleming of Plantation, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Douglas R. Swaim
Former Kent resident Douglas R. Swaim, 61, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died at his home. Born in Kent, he had lived in West Palm Beach for 15 years. Mr. Swaim was the owner of Double Eagle Realty in Deerfield Beach, Fla., and previously was employed as an agent for W.W. Reed and Sons Insurance and Real Estate in Kent. He was a member of the Kent Jaycees and Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; daughters Julie Wilkinson of Tequesta, Fla., Sharon Daniels of Jupiter, Fla., and Kristin Swanson of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren; and sister, Ramona McLaren of Kent. Thomas R. Walker, Sr.
Thomas R. Walker, Sr., 79, of Kent, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a long illness. Born April 12, 1921, in Swiss, W. Va., he was the son of Grover and Edith Walker. he was a Kent resident for 35 years. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include his wife, Alma; sons, Larry, Albert and Thomas, Jr., all of Georgia, Chris of Stow and Tony of Warren; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers Paul of Hico, W. Va. and Francis of Mt. Nebo, W. Va; sister, Clara of Fayette, W. Va. Cremation has taken place. Randlin B. Craemer
Randlin B. Craemer, 46, of North Lawrence Township in Stark County, died Friday, March 16, 2001 at Doctors Hospital in Massillon. Born May 20, 1954 in Kokomo, Ind., she was the daughter of Lawrence and Phyllis (Hite) Busby. Mrs. Craemer was a science teacher at Garfield High School in Akron since 1994. She bred and raised show dogs and was a member of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club. Survivors include her husband, Mark E.; sons, Paul Tyren and Rory Ethan; daughter, Kelsey Lee Davis; her parents, of Cincinnati; brother, Joseph Busby of Dayton; and sister, Laura Busby of Columbus. Ravenna native Susan Block, 56, of Clearwater, Fla., died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at her home. Born July 13, 1944, in Ravenna, she was the daughter of John and Florence (Myers) Kerecman Jr. She had lived in Bedford for 26 years before moving to Clearwater in 1987. Mrs. Block was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lord's Catholic Church in Clearwater. She enjoyed making crafts and researching her family tree. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth E. Sr., whom she married Feb. 9, 1961; sons, Kenneth E. (Kimberly) Jr. of Mantua, Thomas (Robin) of Maple Heights and David of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; mother and step-father, Florence and Raymond Hesketh of Mantua; and sisters, Lillian Atkinson of Mantua and Joeanne (Gary) Broz of Massachusetts. Doris Eells
Doris Irene Eells, 78, of 67 Oakwood Drive, Beloit, died of cancer Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Mantua. Born April 8, 1922, in Alliance, she was the daughter of John and Alice (Shirie) Brock. She was a member of Pine Lake Christian Church in Sebring. Survivors include son, Earl E. (Donna) Eells of Rossville, Ill.; daughters, Patricia E. (Joseph) Skender of Mantua, Bonita I. (David) Hahn of Eatonton, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lester Brock of Hemet, Calif. Her husband, Earnest "Earl" died April 29, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pine Lake Christian Church with the Rev. Scott Bryant officiating. Cremation will take place. Carl Overholt
PALMYRA - Carl E. Overholt, 87, of Palmyra died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his home. Born Oct. 6, 1915, in Akron, he was the son of Edwin and Mary (Keener) Overholt. He lived in Akron for many years. Mr. Overholt retired from Babcock and Wilcox where he worked for 45 years. He volunteered with the American Red Cross and he was a member of the Akron Baptist Temple. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include a son, Larry Overholt of Texas; daughter, Bonnie Johnson of Palmyra; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His first wife, Glendora, and his second wife, Margaruite died previously. There will be no services. Arrangements were made by the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel.
