BARBERTON -- Bernard T. Smith, age 56, passed away June 4, 1998. Mr. Smith was born February 10, 1942 in St. Mary's, Pa. He worked in Maintenance at the Allen Dixon Apartments. He is survived by his fiance, Joanne E. Ramsay of Barberton; mother, Rachel (Bill) Halcomb of Kenmore; daughters, Sandra and Patti; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Bradley, and Jeffrey; brother, Robert (Joan) Kaye of Barberton; nephew, Justin Kaye; seven aunts; one uncle; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Helen Smith, 67, went home to be with the Lord on June 11, 1998, after a short battle with cancer. She is survived by husband, Harold; children, Joanne L. (Dave) Brannon of Atwater, Charles L. June C. Smith
June C. Smith, 77, of Canal Fulton, died Thursday, June 2, 1998, at Massillon Community Hospital. She was born in Cuyahoga Falls, had lived in Canal Fulton since 1960, and was a former employee of Goodyear Aircraft in Akron and the E. I. Lily Co. in Indianapolis, Ind. She was an active member of St. Timothy Episcopal Church in Massillon, where she was active with the Episcopal Church Women (E.C.W.), and was a member of the Heritage Society and the Canal Fulton Piecemakers (Quilters). She and her late husband were charter members of the Akron Rubber City Basha, China, Burma, India Veterans Association. Preceded in death by husband, Burtney Smith; an infant daughter; sister, Faith Weston; and brother, Harry Taylor, she is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Michael Streb of Plain Township; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen G. and Carol Smith of Lawrence Township; grandchildren, Charles C. and Matthew S. WADSWORTH -- Martin S. Smith, 88, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Altercare of Wadsworth, after a brief illness. Born in Millerville, Ala., Mr. Smith resided in Wadsworth since 1994, previously residing in Florida from 1977 to 1994, and in Wadsworth for over 30 years. He was a tire builder at the Seiberling Tire and Rubber Co. for many years. Mr. Smith is survived by wife, Rose; daughter, Janice Smith of Wadsworth; and sister, Zada McKay of Alexander City, Ala. B. Geneverette Somerville, 71, passed away June 11, 1998. ``Gee'' was born to Charles and Sarah Pullum in Cookeville, Tenn., on Jan. 30, 1927. She attended Norton Baptist Church and enjoyed meeting with the Lunch Bunch of former Sun Rubber employees. Phyllis Gotshall Spaethe
Phyllis Gotshall Spaethe, 75, died June 9, 1998. Mrs. Spaethe was born in Akron and was a life resident. A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter A.J., she had been active with the United Way. The widow of William F. Spaethe, she is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Kristine and Phillip Keller of Hudson, Katie and Jay Kraner of Rogers, Ark., Susan and Billy McCorkle of Atlanta, Ga.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sisters, Lois Cowles of Norman, Okla., and Jean (Tom) Jahant of Akron. William B. Spencer
INDIANA -- William B. Spencer, 99, a former Akron resident, died in Franklin, Ind., on June 2, 1998. He came to Akron from his hometown of Rockville, Ind., to play semi-pro basketball in 1921 for the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. He retired in 1964 from B. F. Goodrich, had been a member of Joppa Lodge 666, and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a longtime member of the Old Timers Athletic Association. Preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Grimm) Spencer, he is survived by son, John B. ``Bo'' of Scottsdale, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Alan J. and Judi Spencer of Akron; daughter-in-law, Diane (Phoenix) Spencer of Venice, Fla.; also four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Edward J. Sprankle
WADSWORTH -- Edward J. Sprankle, 57, died unexpectedly Thursday, June 4, 1998, at his residence. Born in Lodi, Mr. Sprankle resided in Wadsworth 16 years, previously residing in Medina. He was a welder at MTD for 20 years and enjoyed fishing and camping. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and UAW. Mr. Sprankle is survived by wife, Ellen (nee Gettemy); daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and John Tamba of Medina, Leslie and Doug Loehr of Hinckley; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Belinda of Wadsworth; stepdaughter, Christine (Mrs. Matthew) Houser of Akron; mother, Genevieve of Wadsworth; 10 grandchildren; sister, Nancy Gerberich of Medina; and three nieces. Mary C. Steen
TALLMADGE -- Mary C. Steen, 85, passed away June 4, 1998, at the Hospice Care Center. Born in Berlin, Pa., she had been a resident of Tallmadge for the past 40 years. Mrs. Steen attended The Chapel for many years, and her life and hobby had been flowers and gardening at her home in Tallmadge, where she received a Chamber of Commerce award for ``Best Garden.'' Preceded in death by her parents, and 12 brothers and sisters, she is survived by husband, Joseph W.; daughters, Trudy Jones of Greentown, Penny (Mike) Barre of Chicago, Ill., and Nancy Caley of Mansfield; son, William at home; six grandchildren; and sisters, Florence Roberts of Oregon City, Ore., and Amelia Redman of New Port Richey, Fla. Marion Glenn Stephens
Marion Glenn Stephens, 68, died June 3, 1998. An area resident all his life, he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He retired from Ohio Brass in 1984 after 32 years service, and then worked as an auditor for Days Inn in Broadview Heights. He was a member of the United Church of Christ. Preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Gerald and Duane, he is survived by his wife, Betty Jean; son, Brian of Akron; daughter, Christina of Newton Falls; six grandchildren; brothers, Paul of Columbia, S. C., and Mont of Inverness, Fla.; sister, Doris Loizides of North Miami Beach, Fla., and sister-in-law, Joann Stephens. Harry Richard ``Buck'' Stiles Jr.
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Harry Richard ``Buck'' Stiles Jr., 54, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away June 9, 1998. He was born in Akron, and served in the U. S. Navy. He was a truck driver and a member of Teamsters 104. He is survived by daughters, Terisa Swan and Tawny Taylor; sons, Harry III and Daniel Stiles; sister, Charlene Stiles; brothers, Donald, Tim, and Gene Stiles; and three grandchildren. Lloyd Stogsdill
Lloyd Stogsdill, 80, passed away June 10, 1998. Born in Pulaski County, Ky., he had lived in the Akron area since 1945. Mr. Stogsdill was employed by American Hard Rubber, the Ravenna Arsenal, and the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. A U. S. Army veteran, he served as a sergeant in the South Pacific during World War II. A founding and lifetime member of the Akron Arid Club, he began 48 years of sobriety with Dr. Bob and Sister Mary Ignatia. He assisted countless souls to the 12 steps with strong words, supporting arms, and always a loving heart. Clarence D. Strickland
Clarence D. Strickland, 75, passed away June 1, 1998. Born in Blount County, Ala., he had lived in the Akron area since 1951. Mr. Strickland retired from Goodyear Aerospace on Oct. 31, 1986, after 35 years of service. He received the most joy in his life when his family got together. Preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Inez, in 1990, he is survived by sons, Philip (Dorothy Long) of Akron, and Gerald; daughters, Patricia (David) Sitko of Uniontown, Paula (Bill) Mullett of North Canton; grandchildren, Cindy (Brian) Warzinski, Mark Sitko, Nathan Strickland, Bryan and Jeremy Mullett; and great-grandson, Austin Strickland. Robert F. Stubenrauch
Robert F. Stubenrauch, 74, of Canton, died Tuesday at Aultman Hospital, following a sudden illness. Born in Long Island, N. Y., he had been a Canton resident since 1974. Mr. Stubenrauch was head of corporate photographic operations in public relations at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, retiring in 1985. He was a member of A.A.R.P., Writer's Guild, Antique Car Club, and prize-winning combat photographer of the 163rd Combat Unit of the Army Signal Corps in World War II. Robert was an artist, writer, and photographer, and published four books; three on antique cars and one on the Revolutionary War. He was head of restoration of Wingfoot Express for Goodyear. Robert was preceded in death by sons, David and Bruce Stubenrauch; and brother, Eugene Stubenrauch Jr. Survivors include his wife, Leah Stubenrauch, with whom he would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this September; daughter-in-law, Peggy Russell; grandchildren, Kelly and Ryan; brother, John Stubenrauch of New York. John Wesley Sudia Jr.
John Wesley Sudia Jr., 71, passed away suddenly at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Seminary in South Canaan, Pa. Born in Akron, he lived in this area most of his life. Mr. Sudia attended The Ohio State University School of Horticulture, had formerly owned and operated Sudia's Floral Shop, and retired from the State of Ohio. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in the Subic Bay during World War II, and had also served in the Army Reserves during the Korean Conflict. Wesley was a lifetime member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church and the Ohio Orthodox Male Chorus. Preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna, and his brother, Donald, he is survived by brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Regina Sudia; sister-in-law, Wanda Sudia; and nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be Saturday, 12 noon, at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 755 S. Cleveland Ave., Mogadore, with Father T. Stephen Kopestonsky officiating. Paul D. Sullivan, 80, passed away June 12, 1998. He retired in 1972, after 30 years of service as a rubber worker for Goodyear. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Kenneth (Carolyn) Sullivan of New Jersey, Gary (Mary) Sullivan of Ellet, Bruce (Debbie) Sullivan of Akron, Dana (Pamela) Sullivan of Texas; sisters-in-law, Garnet and Margaret, and their families; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Florence Summers, 73, went home to be with the Lord on May 28, 1998, at Akron City Hospital, after a long illness. Born in Montgomery, Ala., she had lived in this community for 50 years. She was employed at Merryweather Foam Latex for 28 years, retiring in 1990. She was a licensed beautician. She was a member of the Joyful Seniors. She is survived by her daughter, Francine (James) Wallace; granddaughter, Janda, both of Toledo, Ohio; brother, Richard ``R. C.'' (Frances) Arrington of South Carolina; special friend, Ruby; sisters-in-law, Mary (Wilford) Glasper and Shirley Summers, both of Akron; and a host of other relatives and friends. Ellen C. Swinehart, 102, of North Canton, died Wednesday afternoon at Manor Care Nursing Home, following an extended illness. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and William Travis of North Canton, Evelyn Filhour of Greentown, Naomi and Paul Schiltz, Helen and Charles Dovutovich, and Lora Jean Weidleman; and friend, Robert G. Miller, all of North Canton; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, in 1971. Thelma L. Swope, 90, passed away June 7, 1998. A lifelong resident of Akron, she a devoted member of the Wedgewood United Methodist Church. She was a past president of the P.T.A., of the United Church Women and of the United Methodist Women, and also participated in Mother Singers and was a volunteer with the Good Neighbors. Preceded in death by husband, Ernest, she is survived by sons, Robert (Billie) of Uniontown and Norman (Doris); daughters, Nola (Homer) Baumgardner and Marcia Heller; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren.
