Raymond E. Bastian
Raymond E. Bastian, 91, died March 18, 1998. Born in Cuyahoga Falls on Oct. 2, 1906, he was a life resident of the Akron area. He was plant manager of the Firestone Mechanical Division and retired from the Engineering Division with 48 years service. Mr. Bastian was a member of Coventry Lodge 665 F&AM, Yusef Kahn Grotto, Tadmor Temple Shrine, and the 32nd Degree Scottish Rite. He was an avid golfer and bowler, and was a craftsman of stringed instruments. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; sisters-in-law, Helen Garstenslager and Margaret Yeager; and niece, Patricia Verde. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with Dr. Donard M. Engle officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Frances Elaine Baulos, 62, of Birmingham, Ala., died Monday, March 30, 1998. She was formerly director of finance for the United Way Community Food Bank. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Chris Wendelken of Akron, and Rick and Emily Wendelken of Suffolk, Va.; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Mike Nelson of Atlanta, Ga., and Joy and John Levio of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, Amber, Rick, Jeremy, and Jessica Wendelken, Amanda and Michelle Nelson, and Jacob Levio; parents, Frank and Lora Underwood of Birmingham; brothers, Bob Underwood of Birmingham and Frank Underwood Jr. of Odenville, Ala.; sisters, Dorothy Underwood, Patricia Baker, and Liz Gray, all of Birmingham, Mary Hanna of Daton, Tenn., and Shirley Flanders of Brundidge, Ala. Donald R. Beacham
CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Donald R. Beacham, 71, died March 19, 1998. Mr. Beacham was born in Cuyahoga Falls, where he had resided his entire life. He had worked as a carpet layer for Carpenters Local 619, and was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. Preceded in death by his wife, Della and granddaughter, Allison Beacham, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Roger Dyer of New Bloomington, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Melissa of Cuyahoga Falls; grandchildren, Brian and Jessica Dyer, and Christina, Donald, Kathryn, and Carmen Beacham. Bernice Beaven, 74, of Tallmadge, passed away Friday, March 27, 1998, at Colonial Gardens Nursing Home. She was born June 23, 1923, in Pocahontas, Ark. Mrs. Beaven worked as a bookkeeper for Hesselbart & Mitten for several years. Survivors include her sister, Ivern Pruitt of Florida; several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews. Mary A. Bennett
HOUSTON, Texas -- Mary A. Bennett, 92, died Saturday, March 28. A native of West Virginia, Mrs. Bennett had lived most of her life in the Akron and Stow areas before moving to Texas in 1987. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Akron. Mrs. Bennett will be remembered for her sense of humor, her love of animals and flowers. Preceded in death by her husband, Horace; and son, David, she is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Victor Sears of Houston; grandsons, Marcus and Victor (and Sheri); and great-grandson, Dylan. Clark E. Berkey
WADSWORTH TWP. -- Clark E. Berkey, 78, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Sterling, Mr. Berkey resided in Wadsworth Township since 1947. He was a staff sergeant in the U. S. Army during World War II, serving in Co. D 37th Tank BN., 4th Armored Division. He was assistant street foreman with the City of Wadsworth, retiring in 1977 with 30 years service, and farmed for many years. He was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ, where he served on the Consistory for many years, a member of American Legion Post 170, and a life member of V.F.W. Post 1089. Mr. Berkey is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eileen; daughters, Susan Berkey-Vanik (Mrs. Carroll) of Wilton, Conn., Patricia Berkey of Medina, Anne Berkey of Calabash, N. C.; beloved grandson, Lukas; brother, Carl of Wooster; sisters, Evelyn Schar and Lillie Buss, both of Sterling; and nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by brothers, Woodrow and Andrew. Thomas W. ``Bill'' Beynon
Thomas W. ``Bill'' Beynon, 78, of Uniontown, died Friday, March 20, 1998. He was born in Amsterdam, Ohio, and resided most of his life in Portage Lakes. He recently returned to the area after residing at Ocean Reef in Key Largo, Fla., for 20 years. His life's work was in the commercial coal brokerage business. He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughters, Shari Lee Beynon of Longwood, Fla., Julie Burns of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Dee Ellen Robinson of Vero Beach, Fla., and Lori Cates of Miami, Fla.; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sister, IlaVere Carnes of Houston, Texas; nephews, John B. Carnes of Houston, Thomas R. Schuck of Cincinnati, Rep. William B. Schuck of Columbus, and Robert E. Schuck of Findlay. James H. Binkley
James H. Binkley, 85, of Seville, died Sunday, March 22, at his residence. He was born Feb. 11, 1913, in Alger, Ohio, to William Clinton and Mary Ann (Halsey) Binkley. He married Mary Ann Strednak on Sept. 3, 1938; she survives. He worked for the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1975. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children and their spouses, James A. and Susan Binkley, Donna Jean and David Ball; and grandchildren, Joseph, Michael, and Steven Binkley, and Brian Lee Ray. His sons, Jerry H. and Robert O. Binkley; and brothers and sisters, Harold, Paul, Wayne, Grace, Ruth, and Rhea, died previously. Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Chapel in Wadsworth, with the Rev. Joe Easterling officiating. Burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Akron. Lester C. Black ``Blackie''
Lester C. Black ``Blackie,'' 83, born April 1, 1914, to W. O. and Grace Black in Van Wert, Ohio, passed away Friday, March 20, 1998, at the Village of St. Edward in Fairlawn, Ohio, after a long illness. Blackie was a longtime resident of the Akron area, and his special home on the Muskingum River in Beverly, Ohio. A retired Teamster and mechanic, Blackie was an avid boating enthusiast. He was a life member and past Commodore of the Mogadore Boat Club and the Akron Yacht Club. He was a boating safety instructor for many years, and a retired Honorary Commander of the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise; and sister, Zelma. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Fairlawn; sons, Richard (Dorothy) Black of the Portage Lakes and James (Helen) Black of Medina; stepchildren, Dolores (Daniel) Matz of Copley and Kenneth Kungle of Corona, Calif.; sisters, Marguerite of Rockford, Ohio, and Jane of Laurel, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and special friends. At his request, there will be no calling hours; cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at the ADAMS MASON MEMORIAL CHAPEL (791 E. Market St.), where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until service time. A special service will be held at his home in Beverly, Ohio, on Monday, May 25, 1998, at 12 p.m. A wreath will be placed in the Muskingum River in honor. Viola M. Blazeff
Viola M. Blazeff, 75, of Akron, went home to be with the Lord after a lengthy illness, on March 26, 1998. Viola was born in Canton on June 11, 1922, living most of her life in the Akron area. She was recognized for her exemplary service to the National Committee to preserve Social Security and Medicare, and was duly elected as a member of the Summit County Democratic Central Committee, serving in the seventh and fifth wards, and taking great pride in doing so. Preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Edna Franks; and brothers, Russell and Lloyd Franks, she is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Eli L.; sons, Larry L. Taylor of Palm Springs, Calif., Jeffrey L. (Lu Ann) Blazeff of Akron, and Mark Blazeff of Akron; brothers, Joseph (Naomi) Franks and Richard (Lena) Franks, both of Akron; grandchildren, Jason, Benjamin, Jeffrey, Christopher, and Erica; great-grandchild, Corey; and a host of loving family and friends. WOOSTER -- Anne S. Bobinsky, 81, formerly of McClure Street, Wooster, died Thursday, March 19, 1998. She was the daughter of Michael P. and Kristina Sekerak. She had owned and operated a beauty shop in Cleveland and, along with her husband, owned the former Bob's Sparkle Market in Wooster from 1956 to 1976. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Frank Bobinsky, on April 23, 1974, whom she married Feb. 6, 1941; sister, Mary Kosmider; brothers, John, Joe, Dr. Nicholas, and Mike. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Theodore and Darlene Bobinsky of Bath; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Thomas Hilt of Wooster; grandchildren, T. J. Bobinsky of Bath, and Holly and James Hilt of Wooster; sister, Mrs. Don (Martha) Istvan of Barrington, Ill. Ronald John Bodis
Ronald John Bodis, 23, passed away March 16, 1998. Ron was born in Akron on Jan. 13, 1975. He completed four years of service with the U.S. Navy and was attending Kent State University. He was a bright, shining, shooting star, constantly in motion and full of questions. He greeted each day with unbridled enthusiasm and curiosity. He was our beautiful boy, full of life. He was loved so much and will be greatly missed by his parents, John and Lisa (stepmother) Bodis and Debra and Mark (stepfather) Yacovazzi; sisters, Tiffany Bodis, Cassie and Natalie Yacovazzi; grandparents, Charlotte Bodis and Ron and Sherry Blair; aunts and uncles, Eva (Joe) Varga, Melanie Blair, Frank Bodis and Rob Blair; and countless cousins and friends. Anna T. Borkowski, 69, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 1998. Born in Kalisz, Poland, on July 27, 1928, the daughter of Tadeusz and Maria (Lipinski) Szarras, she was a member of St. Hedwig's Church. Survivors include sons, John (Diana) Glowinkowski of Mansfield, Texas, Mark Borkowski and Alex Borkowski, both of Akron; daughter, Maria (Walter) Isom of Evans, Ga.; grandchildren, Paul, Anna, Casandra, Spencer, Andrew, and Jared; brothers, Jerry Szarras and Stanley Szarras, both of Poland. BARBERTON -- John Joseph Brasko, Sr., 83, died March 24, 1998, at Barberton Citizens Hospital. He was born in Bayonne, N.J., and was a life resident of Barberton. He was a captain with the Barberton Fire Dept. with 33 years service, retiring 15 years ago. He was a member of SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, Rosary Society, Knights of Columbus 1617, Sokol Lodge, and the Jednota Lodge 425. John Brindley
John Brindley, 77, went home to be with the Lord on March 25, 1998. Mr. Brindley was born April 1, 1920, in Cullman County, Ala. He served honorably in the U. S. Navy, and was president of Brindley Service Co. John was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Valley of Akron, and a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge of Baileyton, Ala., and the South Summit Democrats. He attended Canal Fulton Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Rosalie; son, John (Marty) Brindley; daughters, Anne (Phil) Lloyd, Judy (Randy) Jones, and Janice (Mark) Dippel; sister, Eunice (Hoyt) Grimes; grandchildren, Rondy, John Timothy and Thomas Brindley, P. J. Jones, Beth and John Mark Dippel; six great-grandchidren. Phyllis K. Brockett
Phyllis Knight Brockett, 87, of Pilgrim Manor, Cromwell, Conn., died Saturday, March 28, 1998. She was the widow of Wilford E. Brockett, who died in 1987. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Albert and Irene (Owens) Knight. She was a resident of Randolph for over 40 years and a former Wethersfield, Conn., resident before moving to Cromwell two years ago. She, along with her husband, Wilford, owned and operated the W. E. Brockett Turkey Farm in Randolph before retiring in 1974. She attended the Bethany Covenant Church in Berlin, and was a former member of the Chapel of Marlboro in Marlboro, Ohio, and the Jolly Pilgrims Group at church. In Ohio, she was a member of the Ladies Cemetery Association, the Hayseed Club, and the Farm Bureau Council. Surviving are son, Rev. Philip K. Brockett, senior pastor at Bethany Covenant Church, and his wife, Nancy, of New Britain, Conn.; daughter, Celinda ``Cindy'' Nicewonger and her husband, George, of Wethersfield, Conn.; brother, Lawrence Archer of North Carolina; sister, Harriet Hes of Cleveland; grandchildren, Hayden Brockett, Gillian Brockett, Noel Brockett, Rebecca Nicewonger, and Sarah Nicewonger; and several nieces and nephews. Pamela A. Bry, 43, passed away at her residence March 22, 1998. She was born Jan. 20, 1955, in Akron, the daughter of Armand and Julia Archual. Pamela graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1973. She is survived by her husband, Don R. Bry; mother, Julia Archual; daughters, Angie Bry and Ashley Bry; sons, Anthony Beal and Aaron Bry; brother, Armand Archual; many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Frederick E. Buddenhagen
Frederick E. Buddenhagen, 80, of Londonderry, N. H., died March 15, 1998, in Sarasota, Fla. Mr. Buddenhagen was born in Sidney, N. Y., on March 23, 1917, and was a graduate of Colgate University in 1937 with a B. S. in physics. His career was spent in the tire industry and in the 1940s he worked for Firestone Rubber Co., developing tires for war use. He later became vice president of Armstrong Rubber Co. and lived in North Haven, Conn., where he was a member of the New Haven Country Club. In 1965 he joined BF Goodrich as technical director of international research and development, and retired in 1982. While living in Fairlawn Heights, he was a charter member of Hudson Country Club. Mr. Buddenhagen was also a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Akron Rubber Group. He is survived by his wife, Florence (Schaap) Buddenhagen; sons, Frederick L. Buddenhagen and Paul S. Buddenhagen; his daughter, Carolyn B. Littlefield; and four grandchildren. Private funeral services were held Wednesday, March 18, 1998.
