Carl V. Hahn
NORTON -- Carl V. Hahn, 84, died April 9, 1998, at Barberton Citizens Hospital. He was born in Wadsworth, Ohio and was a life resident of the Norton-Barberton area. Carl was founder and owner of the Hahn Funeral Home. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the National Funeral Directors Association, Ohio Funeral Directors Association, Summit County Funeral Directors Association, Knights of Columbus Council 1617, Barberton Kiwanis Club, First Hungarian Benefit Society, Greater Beneficial Union, St. Augustine Choir and Holy Name Society, and was a former member of the Barberton Jaycees. He is survived by wife, Lucille, of 57 years; daughters, Mary Ann (Mike) Alexander of Cincinnati, Joyce Smith of Akron; grandsons, James and Benjamin; brothers, Stephen P. of Barberton and Michael T. of Euclid; and sister, Mrs. Anne Glancy of Barberton. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Fr. Richard Burchell, celebrant. Interment at Clinton Cemetery. Jean E. Hammond
HUDSON -- Jean E. Hammond, of Hudson, Ohio, and Kalamazoo, Mich., passed away Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at Borgess Hospital, following emergency surgery. Born in Cleveland on Dec. 18, 1915, she graduated from Brush High School and Kent State University, and was a longtime resident of Hudson. She attended Steels Corners Christian Church. She taught first grade at Northfield Macedonia School System for 24 years. She is remembered for her loving, gentle, and generous ways, her twinkling eyes and angelic smile. Jean cherished times shared with students, friends, and family. She stated she was ``rich beyond dreams'' because of mountains, deserts, and oceans experienced in travels across the U.S.A., and even more so, because of laughs and times shared with all who knew her. She also loved her hot coffee, doughnuts, and candy. Her last two years were spent in a new life at Friendship Village in Kalamazoo, Mich., close to her only child, Dr. Geoffrey K. Hammond, M.D., his wife, Else, and her daughter, Sara. Services will be held Friday, April 10, 1998, at 1:30 p.m., at Johnson-Romito, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, 19 E. DOYLESTOWN -- Nora Jane Hammond, 75, died April 1, 1998. Mrs. Hammond was born in Fairmont, W. Va., on April 23, 1922, and lived in Akron most of her life. She retired in 1966 as a bank teller for the First National Bank after 13 years. She is survived by her husband, Robert F. of Doylestown; daughter, Eva Maria Hammond of Stow; brother, Arthur Long of Baltimore, Md.; aunt, Josephine Sayre of Akron. Mary Hanak
DOYLESTOWN -- Mary Hanak, 87, died April 5, 1998. She was a resident of Doylestown for many years, and a member of the Barberton Church of God. She was preceded in death by husband, Nicholas Hanak; four brothers, and one sister, and is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Marjorie Hanak of Doylestown; daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Roy Bowen of Milwaukee, Wis.; grandchildren, Nancy (Doug) Beard of Indiana, Ruth (Joe) Feesler of Manchester, Steve (Lyn) Hanak of Middletown, Nicole Bowen of Wisconsin; sisters, Martha Lash of Indiana, Dorothy Stofko of Berlin Center, Anna Terray of Arizona; and brother, Joseph Cerbus of Hermitage, Pa. Lucious Handsome
Lucious Handsome, 87, of 393 Hollywood Ave., Akron, formerly of Youngstown, died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at the Hospice Care Center in Akron. Mr. Handsome was born June 7, 1910, in Vidalia, Ga., a son of James and Sudie Durden Handsome, and moved to Youngstown in 1942. He had worked with U. S. Steel Corp. for 27 1/2 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church (Youngstown), past chairman of the trustee board, and co-founder and helped build the church. He was a member of the NAACP. His wife, the former Naomia Stuckey, whom he married in 1942, died in October 1995. He leaves daughter, Mrs. Tracey Handsome-Bradford of Akron; son, James Howard of Savannah, Ga.; and seven grandchildren. His daughter, Mrs. Jackie Massey; sisters, Ms. Ruth Handsome and Ms. Bertha Handsome; and brothers, Arliss, Leon, Lawson, Rufus, and Willie Handsome, preceded him in death. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 1998, at the L. E. Black & Phillips Funeral Home, 1951 McGuffey Rd., Youngstown. Shirley A. Hansford-Hunt
Shirley A. Hansford-Hunt, age 58, of Rootstown, died at her home on Monday. Born March 19, 1940, in Ravenna. She was the daughter of George L. and Edna (DeFluiter) Schumm. She had lived in Kent for most of her life until moving to Rootstown six months ago. Mrs. Hansford-Hunt was a member of the United Church of Christ of Kent, and was a social member of the American Legion Post of Kent. She had been a social worker with the Portage County Department of Human Services. Survivors include her son, Christopher G. Hunt of Akron; daughters, Mrs. Shawn (Kimberly) Pruett of Durham, N.C., and Mrs. Gregg (Marchelle) Bobbs of Ravenna; four grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren; mother, Edna Derr of Kent; brother, Thomas Schumm of Houston, Texas; sister, Mrs. Richard (Sharon) Wessel of Virginia Beach, Va.; former husbands, Glenn R. Hunt of Rootstown and Frank D. Hansford of Kent; stepson, Dale Hansford of Kent; stepdaughters, Mrs. Mark (Debbie) Belcher of Morgantown, Ky., Diana Hansford of Findlay, Ohio and Denise Pitts of Sarasota, Fla.; stepmother, Evelyn Schumm of Canton, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her father, George L. Schumm; and a brother, Jerry Schumm. Melba D. (Lois) Hardacre
Melba D. (Lois) Hardacre passed away Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at the Visiting Nurse Service Hospice Care Center, after a short illness. She had been an Akron resident for over 50 years, residing the past 15 years in Kenmore. She was born in Cullman, Ala. The youngest daughter of D. L. and Alice Chambers, she was preceded in death by her husband, James; three brothers, and six sisters. Lois is survived by and was devoted to her daughter, Barbara (George) Raybuck; and granddaughter, Rachelle Raybuck, all of Akron; she also leaves brother, Orvis Chambers; sisters, Bessie Walker, Lula Gay, and Ora Mullins, all of Alabama; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and longtime friend, Agnes Lamb. Zbigniew R. Hardt
Zbigniew R. (Ben) Hardt, 77, of Akron, died March 29, 1998, at Akron General Medical Center. Born in Lvov, Poland, Ben was a resident of the Akron area since 1952. He retired as a research chemist from B. F. Goodrich in 1983 after 27 years service. Ben was a member of St. Sebastian Church, the B. F. Goodrich Retirees, and active in the Parkinsons Support Group and the Stan Hywet Foundation. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Polish Unit of the R.A.F. He is survived by wife, Elizabeth; children and spouses, Christopher J. Hardt of Akron, Mary Alice and James Brosseau of Tulsa, Okla., Ann Therese and Chester Williams of Lexington, Mass., Patricia M. and Robert Donaldson of Congers, N. Y., Margaret M. and Mark Frondorf of Arlington, Va., Karen M. Hardt of Akron, and Mark J. Larry E. Harold, 45, died Saturday, April 11, 1998. Donna L. ``Dolly'' Harrah
Donna L. ``Dolly'' Harrah, 62, of Orrville, died Saturday at Aultman Hospital in Canton. She was born Jan. 13, 1936, in Dover Township, Ohio, to Floyd and Dorothy E. (Alleshouse) Hochstetler. She worked for United Telephone Companies of both Rittman and Wooster as a telephone operator for 22 years before retiring in 1984. She is survived by husband, Loren K., whom she married Aug. 17, 1968, in Rittman; mother and stepfather, Mrs. Dorothy E. (Louie) Firis of Wooster; son, Michael K. Harrah of Orrville; brother, Floyd W. Hochstetler of Akron; and sister, Mrs. Anna C. DuBreuil of Wooster. Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Custer Funeral Home in Wooster, with Claude L. CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Margaret Nola Embler Hawkins, 97, passed away April 4, 1998, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Akron. A native of Buncombe County, N. C., she had lived in Ohio since 1930. She retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber after many years of service. She was a member of Mt. View Freewill Baptist Church in Alexander, N. C. Preceded in death by husband, Lloyd Hawkins; sisters, Grace Sluder, Minnie Nunley, and Helen Kaufman, she is survived by her sister, Erma Buckner of Alexander, N. Gordon R. Herbig
Gordon R. Herbig, passed away April 4, 1998, in Plano, Texas. Gordon was born in Coshocton, Ohio and lived in Akron, Ohio, where he worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber for 46 years. Throughout Gordon's life, he was a past master of Coventry Masonic Lodge, a member of Tadmore Shrine, a member of Firestone Park United Methodist Church in Akron, and an avid golfer, bridge player and traveler. Surviving Gordon are his sister, Helen Schlemmer of Florida; daughter-in-law, Sue Herbig, of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Judy Hankey and Jeff Herbig; step-daughter, Mary Donke, of Illinois; great-grandchildren, Kristan, Holly and Jennifer Herbig. Arietta ``Peg'' Higgins, 92, passed away April 5, 1998, in Wichita, Kan. Mrs. Higgins was born in Middleport, Ohio, on May 13, 1905. She was a member of Lakeview Church of Christ. She is survived by her son, M. M. ``Pepper'' (Nita) Martin of Wichita, Kan.; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Frank Issac Hill
Frank Issac Hill was born in Akron on Dec. 15, 1935, to King Hill Jr. and Cora Minnie Boddie Hill. He was educated in the Akron Public School system and, after leaving high school, he entered the U. S. Armed Services (Army) in 1954, and was discharged in 1956. On Wednesday, April 1, 1998, he passed from labor to reward at 8:20 a.m., at the age of 62 years. He was preceded in death by his father, King Hill Jr.; stepfather, Edgar Lee Sr.; and brother, Rev. Edgar Lee Jr. He leaves, to mourn his memory, his loving and devoted mother, Mrs. C. Minnie Lee; brother, Elder Joseph Lee, both of Akron; sister, Eulah Boomer of Des Moines, Iowa; and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, other loving relatives and friends. Jennett D. Hines, 86, died April 1, 1998. A resident of Barberton for 68 years, she retired from Firestone Tire & Rubber after 40 years service, and was a member of Lakeview United Methodist Church. Surviving are daughter, Mary Dilys Leatherman; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one brother and two sisters. Carolyn (Hawkins) Hollings, 52, went home to be with the Lord on April 12, 1998, at Saint Thomas Hospital. She had lived all of her life in this community, and was a former member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Anthony (Joyce) Hawkins of Akron; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; brothers, Herman Hawkins, Donald Hawkins, and William Hawkins, all of Akron; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. John O. Holt III, 43, of Stow, died suddenly March 31, 1998. John was born in Massachusetts, and was a Stow resident the past 25 years. For the past seven years he was customer operations manager at the Swagelok-QC Co. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Warren E. Hons, 71, of Stow, husband of Mary Jean (nee Snyder); loving father of Craig (Sallie) Hons, Leslie (Glen) Merica, Sally Hons, Mitchell Hons, Jeffrey (Karen) Hons, Bo Hons, Heather Hons, and the late Thomas Hons; dear grandfather of Emily, Matthew, Lauren, James, and Kristyn; dear brother of Harold (Dorothy) Hons; and son of the late Anna and Roscoe Hons, died Tuesday. He was a World War II Army veteran and member of Doylestown American Legion. He is preceded in death by wife, Edna Mae (Garrett) Hopkins; son, Michael Hopkins; and one brother. Charlotte Elizabeth Hoskins
Charlotte Elizabeth Hoskins, of Akron, went home to meet her Lord April 4, 1998. Charlotte was involved with religious and community activities. She attended the Gospel Crusaders Church and was a member of the Cuyahoga Falls Community Chorus. She worked in the 70's in many area restaurants and recently took care of and gave personal love to many young and elderly in the home health care field. Preceded in death by son, Floyd ``Tim'' Hoskins, grandson, Floyd ``Little T'' Hoskins, and sister, Delores Cline; she is survived by her sons, Edward, William A., and Brian K.; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Conner; many grandchildren, adopted grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; sister, Laura Sipe; and many special friends, including Richard McClure and family. Service will be held 2 P.M. FRIDAY at the Billow TALLMADGE Chapel, 17 Southwest Ave., with Pastor E. Robert Sullivan officiating. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park. Christine R. Hoy
Christine R. Hoy, 39, of Canton, died unexpectedly Thursday evening. She worked for GDS Express as a freight coordinator. She is survived by her son, Toby Hoy of Canton; mother, Judy (Barrick) Falenski of North Canton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Cathi and Mike Lackney, and Debbi and George Cuckler, all of Canton; niece, Wendy Barchalk of Florida; her best friend, Kitty Sarah; the man she looked up to and admired, Jack Delaney; and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Don, on March 24, 1995; grandmother, Helen Barrick, on Aug. 20, 1996; and grandfather, Guy Barrick, on Jan. 1, 1981. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Karlo & Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Donald Phelps officiating. Burial will be at North Canton Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the estate of Christine Hoy, care of Karlo & Sons, 512 S. Dr. Robert Leroy Hurd
Dr. Robert Leroy Hurd, 83, passed away after a brief illness, on March 24 in Palm Harbor, Fla. Dr. Hurd had been a resident of Palm Harbor, Fla., since 1986. He was born in Wayland, and moved to the Akron area in 1946. He retired in 1983 after spending 37 years in the private practice of dentistry in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls. He attended undergraduate school at Kent State University and graduated from Ohio State School of Dentistry in 1943. He spent three years active duty in the Navy during World War II, followed by 20 years Naval Reserve duty, retiring with the rank of captain. He was past president of the Akron Dental Society and was a life member of the American Dental Association. He organized an developed a vocational school program for the training of dental assistants which has become an integral part of the Akron School System. He was an associate staff member of Akron Children's Hospital for 25 years. His activities included many civic, church, and community affairs. He was a charter member and former board member of Silver Lake Country Club. He was a member of the Akron Lions Club for 25 years. A 32nd Degree Mason, he was a member of Joppa Lodge 666, Tadmor Shrine, and Jesters Court 80. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians for 50 years. He was a licensed Amateur Radio Operator. He is survived by his wife, Vera; daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Diann and Phillip Bridenbaugh of Cincinnati; grandsons, Robert Glueck of Cincinnati and Jeffrey Glueck of Burbank, Calif. Also, his extended family includes grandsons, Thomas Bridenbaugh of Cincinnati, Daniel Bridenbaugh of Indianapolis, Ind.; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Susan and Michael Murphy of Houston, Texas; great-grandsons, Matthew and Kevin Murphy. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HOSPICE or a favorite charity.

Goldie (Cline) Husk (nee DeWeese)
BARBERTON--Goldie (Cline) Husk, (nee DeWeese), 69, died peacefully at home April 4, 1998. She was a life resident of Barberton. Preceded in death by husband, Joe Husk; sons, James L. and Lewis E. Cline. Surviving are daughters, Shirley (Robert) Legg of Florida, Debra (Greg) Graves of Canal Fulton; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Orville (Jennings) and Gilbert DeWeese; sisters, Geneva Lockhart and Garnet DeWeese. Funeral services Tuesday 2 p.m. at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home, Pastor Robert L. Webb officiating. Burial at John Wright Cemetery, Cremo, W. Va.
