Ruth Quick, 92, died April 16, 1998. Mrs. Quick was born in Buckhannon, W. Va., and had lived 38 years in the Akron area. A member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron, the Retired Teachers Association, the Cuyahoga Falls Women's Club, and the Pilot Club of Akron, she was a retired teacher from the Northampton Schools. The widow of Carroll Quick, she is survived by nieces, Marcia Mazak, Norma Butcher, Sharon Butler, Marguirete Saeler, Dorothy Radabaugh, Avis West, and Janis Donell; nephews, Leonard, Wilbur, and Blaine Tenney. Services will be at 11 a.m. MONDAY at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with Rev. Nancy O. Arnold officiating. Interment at Heavener Cemetery in Buckhannon, W. Va. WADSWORTH -- Gale H. Richey, 82, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at Altercare of Wadsworth, after a brief illness. Mr. Richey was born in Doylestown and resided in Wadsworth 50 years. He was a boiler fitter at Babcock & Wilcox for 36 years, retiring in 1976. Mr. Richey was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Wadsworth Loyal Order of Moose 2070, and F.O.E. 2117. He was an avid bowler and golfer. Mr. Richey is survived by wife, Althea, to whom he was married 57 years; brother-in-law and wife, Arlo and Wanda Jacobs of Creston; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, Dale; and sister, Blanche Ries. The family will receive friends Monday, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Hilliard Cox Mullaney Funeral Home, 174 N. Robert J. Ritterbeck
Robert J. Ritterbeck, 70, of Akron, passed away Sunday, April 26, at the Hospice Care Center. He was born Sept. 26, 1927, in Summit County, the son of Julius and Julitta Miller Ritterbeck. Mr. Ritterbeck retired from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Stow Mold Plant in 1989 with over 36 years of service. He was a member of Adoniram Lodge 517 F&AM, V.F.W. Airport Post 8975, and a U. S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Survivors include his loving wife, Beatrice; daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Don Adamov, and Leisa and Mike Kungle; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Risa Ritterbeck, Robert and Linda Ritterbeck, Gary and Pam Felton, Rick and Toni Felton; sisters, Alice Kelly, Dorothy Gray, and Rosemary Shifflett; 15 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mary G. Rohler, 88, passed away April 16, 1998, after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Mary E. and Robert Wells Jr.; granddaughters, Heather Ervin, Megan Ervin, and Caitlin Wells; brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Betty Galit; many nieces and nephews. Lucille Rondini (nee Roberts)
Lucille Rondini (nee Roberts) was the beloved wife of Albert (deceased); dearest mother of Alice Stanko (John), Ann Barry Zavodny (Ken), Jean Hancak (Jerry), and Alan; devoted grandmother of eight, great-grandmother of seven; dear sister of John Roberts, Vivian Gore, Donald Roberts, Shirley Fossa, and Walter Roberts. Sister Frances Ann Schismenos
Sister Frances Ann Schismenos, 51, of Mansfield, passed away Thursday, April 23, at home following a long illness. Born in Akron, August 13, 1946 to Leo and Dorothy Demko Schismenos, she became a Professed religious sister of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Charity in Tiffin, Ohio in 1965. She taught school from 1967-1977 in Edgerton, Custar and New Washington, Ohio. Sr. Fran then became a Pastoral Associate and ministered in Holgate and Hamler, Ohio from 1977-1987. following a year of studies in Berkeley, Ca. in 1987-1988, Sr. Fran became a Pastoral Associate at St. Peter's Parish in Mansfield, where she continued ministering until the time of her death. She was preceded in death by her father, Leo Schismenos and is survived by her mother, Dorothy Schismenos of Akron; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Sally and Mike Baumgardner of Dearborn Heights, Mi., and Joanie Schismenos of Lakewood; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lee and Lilly Schismenos of Akron and Joe and Diane Schismenos of Akron, and a number of nieces and nephews. Raymond J. Schneider
Raymond J. Schneider, 85, passed away April 24, 1998, after a long illness. Born in Chicago, Ill., he had lived in the Akron area since 1975. Mr. Schneider was employed for 33 years by the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., retiring in 1975 as vice president controller at Firestone Canada. He then worked for seven years at Fairlawn Supply. Ray was past president of the Greensburg Lions Club, treasurer of the Sunshine Investment Club, and served as clerk of the Green School Board from 1954 to 1959. Mr. Schneider was a member of Noblesville, Ind., Lodge 57 F&AM, York Rite, Tadmor Temple, and the Barberton Shrine Club. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edna L.; son and daughter-in-law, Arthur R. and Dolores of New Jersey; daughters and son-in-law, Carol Koontz of Virginia Beach, Va., Gail and Jim Rollence of Green, and Janet Schneider of Oakville, Ontario; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. E. Frank Sharpless, age 64, of Apache Junction, Ariz., died April 22, 1998. Born in Kitmiller, Md., he was a retired forklift driver, and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Moose Lodge No. 2039, Eagles No. 3850, and American Legion No. 27. He is survived by wife, Marian; daughter, Rosemary Richmond; sons, Bill, Bob, Mike and Chuck; brothers, Charles, Louie and William; and eight grandchildren. Donald T. Simms, 76, died April 14, 1998. Born in Akron, he was a member of Holy Family Church in Stow, and was retired from Goodyear Aerospace as a tool and die maker. Mr. Simms is survived by wife, Mary; sons, Michael and Martin; daughters, Sue, Twikie, and Gayle; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and twin brother, Dale. Walter R. (Bubbles) Slovisky
Walter R. (Bubbles) Slovisky, 84, left us to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 26. Born Aug. 27, 1913, in Hotzdale, Pa., Bubbles spent most of his life in Akron and Tallmadge. After serving three years in the Coast Guard, he was employed by General Tire for 39 years, retiring in 1976 without ever having missed a day. Always involved in sports, Bubbles played semi-pro football, was a top-ranking golfer for the Polish American Club, coached the PAC basketball team to a city championship, coached winning teams for Miktarian's ``Joe's All-Star Cafe,'' and refereed softball games for General Tire. Past president of the Polish American Club, Bubbles was a member of Tallmadge Primetimers, P.N.A., P.R.C.U., Old Timers Club, was an usher at Saint Hedwig's Church, and most recently a member of Our Lady of Victory Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 1/2 years, Charlotte Slovisky; son, Richard Slovisky of Georgia; daughter, Karen (Riley) Salmons; daughter, Susan (Robert) Moore of Kansas; son, Todd (Marie) Slovisky of Akron; brother, Joseph (Juanita) Slovisky; sisters, Betty Baker and Marge Rankin; sister, Ann (Gerry) Wright; sisters-in-law, Janet Sasinowski and Henrietta (Robert) Uber; brother-in-law, Stanley Sasinowski; grandchildren, Paul, Steven, and Loretta Slovisky, Allison and Angela Salmons, Whitney and Sarah Moore, Samuel and Sydney Slovisky; and many nieces and nephews. Charles M. Snow Jr.
NAPLES, Fla. -- Charles M. Snow Jr., 74, of Naples, Fla., died Monday, April 13, 1998. Formerly of Akron, he moved to Naples in 1986. He worked for Firestone for 44 years, retiring in 1984. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater. Mr. Snow was an active musician for many years. In Akron, he was a 50-year member of Coventry Lodge F&AM 665, a member of South Akron Eagles and Yusef Khan Grotto. He is survived by his wife, Carin I. Snow; his children, Denise Varca and her husband, Frank, of Massillon, Cindy Collins and her husband, Lloyd, of North Canton, and Evon Snow of Akron; brother, Donald Snow of Westfield Center; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. John H. Snyder
John H. Snyder, 88, of Jackson Township, Massillon, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Massillon Community Hospital, after a lengthy illness. John was born Feb. 2, 1910, at Fort McAlevy, Pa., son of Franklin Snyder and Louetta Thompson Snyder, both deceased. He was a resident of Massillon for the last 12 years after moving from Deerfield, Ohio. He worked 27 years at Wrights Coal Co. as a coal miner. He attended the First Assembly of God Church in Massillon. Survivors include children, Mrs. Adrian (Shirley) Prather of Massillon, Jeff Snyder of North Canton, Lois Gillis of Wickenberg, Ariz., Marlene Finegan of Massillon, and Mrs. Sherrill (Donna) Shaw Jr., of Deerfield, Ohio; brother, Mr. Irvin Snyder of Bedford, Ohio; sisters, Blanche Baker of Greenville, S. C., and Mary Beri of Windber, Pa.; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Daisy Snyder, in 1979; four brothers, and eight sisters. Ralph J. Spicer
Ralph J. Spicer, 87, went home to the Lord on April 25, 1998, after a short illness. Born on July 18, 1910, in Copen, W. Va., he was a World War II veteran, serving in the 343rd Engineering Regiment of the U.S. Army in Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon with bronze arrowhead. Mr. Spicer retired from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. with 36 years of service. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Preceded in death by his parents, Bunyan and Alberta Moss Spicer; and sisters, Zady Spicer, Floda Hosey, and Lucy Moyers; he is survived by his brother, Harvey Spicer; and his sister, Madaline Spicer McClain, both of Akron; his sister, Ruth Spicer Alltop of Clarksburg, W. Geraldine L. Spiggle
Geraldine L. Spiggle passed away peacefully April 18, 1998. She was born Sept. 24, 1910, in Galion, Ohio, and lived most of her life in Akron. A graduate of Actual Business College, she was a member of Akron Woman's City Club, First Grace United Church of Christ, and a former member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Miss Spiggle was preceded in death by her father and mother, Albert and Elsie Spiggle; and sister and brother-in-law, Miriam S. and Martin P. Lauer. Beatrice Roberts Standel
Beatrice Roberts Standel, 82, died April 25, 1998. A life resident of Akron, she was a member of Unity Chapel of Light, and the Akron Yacht Club. She was recording secretary for Weathervane Community Playhouse, a volunteer at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, and was one of the Broadway Bells (retired Akron Board of Education women). Mrs. Standel was a secretary for the Akron Board of Education and General Tire Co. Preceded in death by first husband, Edmond Roberts, she is survived by husband, Charles Standel; daughters, Diane (Hermann) Clemens of Charlotte, N.C., Carole (John) Satterfield of Bath, Nancy (Charles) Bieser of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; Jeff Standel of Akron; Roberta Standel of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Homer R. Starcher
Homer R. Starcher, 75, of Spencer, W. Va., died April 23, 1998, at his home. He was born August 13, 1922, in Spencer, a son of the late Thomas Edward and Lovie Roberts Starcher. He retired from the Spencer State Hospital, worked for Bill Bailey Furniture for several years, was a Methodist, and a member of the U.S. Army and Coast Guard where he was a member of the Seven Seas Training Corps. He is survived by daughters, Jeanette Reed and Debra Rhodes, both of Spencer; sons, Paul and David Starcher, both of Spencer; nine grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by brothers, Coy and Carl Starcher. Service 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 1998, at the TAYLOR-VANDALE FUNERAL HOME, Spencer, with Rev. Rick Perrine officiating. Rosemary A. Staubs, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away April 23, 1998. Rosemary was a lifelong resident of Akron. Rosemary is survived by her husband of 47 years, Omer; daughter, Beverly of Bradenton, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Sara of Akron; son, James of Dallas, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Frank Leban of Columbia, Md.; seven grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jane M. Steiner
Jane M. Steiner, 82, died April 19, 1998. A life resident of Akron, she was a member of the Akron Woman's City Club, and Fairlawn Park and Civic Center. She was a graduate of Central High School, The University of Akron in 1938 with an AB degree with distinction, and from Western Reserve University in 1945 with a M.A. degree in English. In September 1937, she started her teaching career, teaching English at Miller School; in 1938 literature at Central High; 1939 to 1944 journalism at Central High; 1945 to 1957 English and journalism at West High; and 1958 to 1968 English at Buchtel, and also directed plays from 1968 to 1978 at The University of Akron, and retired as Associate Professor Emeritus of Associates Studies in the C and T College. Miss Steiner was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Nina Steiner; brother and sister-in-law, John and Eleanor Steiner, and is survived by her niece, Suzanne E. Steiner of the City of Green; nephews, Christian C. (Susan) Steiner of Silver Lake, Mark T. Steiner of Akron, Eric J. (Laurie) Steiner of Copley; great-niece and -nephews, Christopher (Mary), Aaron, Stephanie, William, and Timothy; great-great-nephew, Caleb; cousin, Beverly Lucia; and numerous friends and former students on whom she had a great influence. Richard A. Steingass, 47, of Akron, died at his home Thursday, April 16, 1998. He was born in Medina, and resided in Valley City most of his life prior to moving to Akron 15 years ago. He was a 1970 Buckeye High School graduate, and was employed at Buckeye Freightliner in Richfield, at the parts counter. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Jessie; son, Christopher Moore of Oregon; daughter, Heather Moore of Elyria, Ohio; his mother, Betty Steingass of Medina; sister, Cathy (Bob) Gest of Medina; brothers, Robert J. (Kathy) Steingass of Medina and Gary (Nancy) Steingass of Valley City; nieces, Kelly Gest of Medina and Teri Steingass of Michigan; and nephew, Kyle Gest of Medina. Deborah (Debbie) L. Stottler, 39, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 26, 1998, after a brief illness. Born in Akron, and living here most of her life, Debbie attended Garfield High School and Akron Barber College. She was the loving mother of Misty and Rachel and all of her animals. She will be sadly missed by daughters, Misty and Rachel, along with sisters, Pamela Ann (John), Tonia (Scott); mother, Alice Stottler; father, Herb (Jan) Stottler; grandparents, Ralph and Mary Butler; aunts, Pat and Linda (Sonny); uncles, John Stottler, Chuck, Cliff, and Rich Butler; cousins, Brian (Jan) Stottler, Christine (David) Leller of South Carolina, Myra and Bob of Newark, Kim and Jackie; niece, Chelsea; and friends, Brian (Karen) Bower and Jim Pasterchek. Anne G. Susong
Anne G. Susong, of Merriman Road, Akron, died Thursday at Sumner on Merriman Home. She was born April 11, 1914, in Nanty Glo, Pa., to John and Mary (Komperda) Gall. She graduated from Cleveland Hospital as a registered nurse. She was a member of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Akron, past president of the East High School of Akron PTA, and was active in the Girl Scouts at Camp Ledgewood and the Phi Mu Mothers. Survivors include her son, Carl F. (Jeanne) of Highland Village, Texas; daughters, Mary Lou (Thomas) Olson of Kent, Margaret Ann (Michael) Freedman of Hudson, Katherine E. (William A.) Wood of Suffield; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Gallese of Bedford; son-in-law, John P. Nash of St. Augustine, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles K. Susong, in 1981; and by daughter, Helen Jane Nash, in 1986. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Annunciation Catholic Church in Akron, with Fr. Paul Rosing officiating. Mark Andrew Szymanski
Mark Andrew Szymanski, 30, membership manager for National Small Business United, and formerly a territory manager for the United States Chamber of Commerce, died on Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at his home in Vienna, Va., after losing a long and difficult battle with depression. He was born in Akron, Ohio and moved with his family to Virginia in 1968. Mark was a graduate of South Lakes High School in Reston, and attended Virginia Commonwealth University. Most of all, he was a gentle, kind, and generous person who loved his family and friends. He had a love for and vast knowledge of high performance cars, and his avocation was that of amateur auto mechanic. Mark enjoyed reading and fishing, and his life-long love of trains connected him with many, especially his nieces and nephews. His marriage to D. Marie Cronin did not endure. He was the dearly loved son of Judith and George Bowns of Vienna, Va., and Robert Szymanski of Arlington, Va. Mark leaves his grandmothers, Nell Szymanski of Akron, Ohio and Lisa Maciel of San Leandro, Calif. His grandparents, Norbert and Velma Haas and Oscar Szymanski predeceased him. In addition, he leaves two stepbrothers, Tim and Scott Bowns of Gaithersburg, Md., and two stepsisters, Gamble McCown of Dickerson, Md., and Jennifer Brown of Germantown, Md.; sisters-in-law, Patty and Jenny Bowns; brothers-in-law, Jim McCown and Jimmy Brown; along with five nieces and nephews, Christopher, Colleen, Carter, Holly and Bo. His nephew, Peyton, preceded him in death. A Memorial Mass for Mark will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Hilary Catholic Church, Fairlawn. Inurnment at Greenlawn Cemetery.
