Evelyn Bertine Bradley
ROOTSTOWN - Evelyn Bertine Bradley, 83, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born Nov. 29, 1917, in Freedom Township, she was the daughter of James M. and Blanche (Slagle) McCormick. She had lived in Rootstown since 1940.
Mrs. Bradley was a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons, Randy of Rootstown and Ron (Barbara) of Rootstown; daughter, Phyllis Lowden of Randolph; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Raymond, died in 1983. Her sister, Norma Berg, died previously.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Homeland Cemetery in Rootstown, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home in Ravenna.
Memorials may be made to the Rootstown Volunteer Fire Department or the Haven of Rest in Akron.

Luetta V. Goodrich
ROOTSTOWN - Luetta V. Goodrich, 61, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at home.
Born Aug. 2, 1939, in Harrison County, W. Va., she was the daughter of Asbury F. and Lulu (Swager) Ash. She had lived in Newton Falls before moving to Rootstown in 1966.
Mrs. Goodrich was a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons, Howard "Vernon" (Millie) of Warren, Wesley (Christine) of Diamond, Michael (Bernice) of Freedom, Rodney (Lena) of Ft. Knox, Ky., Jeff (Michele) of Newton Falls and Thomas (Sherry) of Garrettsville; daughter, Kathy Williams of Newton Falls; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her husband, Howard W., died Dec. 29, 1993. Her parents; brothers, Albert and Arnold Ash; and sisters, Luella Hester and Junell Lyons, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. until noon services Tuesday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville, with the Rev. Carl Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Windham Township Cemetery.

Hazel A. Lawless
SHALERSVILLE - Hazel A. Lawless, 87, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born March 18, 1914, in Freedom Township, she was the daughter of Will and May (Noble) Thorp. She had lived in Shalersville since 1952.
Mrs. Lawless was a homemaker, and she was president of Crestwood Senior Citizens for 15 years.
She also was a member of the Portage County Sheriff's Association, the Portage County Women's Democratic Association and the Town and Country Club.
Survivors include her nephews, William Marris of Shalersville and Russell Marris of Ravenna, and nieces, Mrs. Charles (Mary Jane) Wellman of Braceville and Mrs. John (Elsie) Schuler of Farwell, Mich. Her husband, William E., died in 1983. Her sister, Ada Marris, and niece, Betty Lou Marris, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Shorts Funeral Home in Ravenna, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.
Memorials may be made to the Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department and paramedics.

Frank Edward Wagner
Frank Edward Wagner, 59, of Ravenna died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at home.
Born Jan. 6, 1942, in Ravenna, he was the son of Edward L. and Enabelle (Rentz) Wagner. He had lived in Kent before moving to Ravenna 26 years ago.
Mr. Wagner was employed with Kent's water maintenance department for 15 years until he retired.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene "Dee" (Von Stein); sons, Jon A. (Paula) of Hudson and Dr. James M. of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two granddaughters; brother, Don of Florida; and sister, Kathy Green of Florida. His parents died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna.

Leroy M. "Pete" Hostetler
Leroy M. "Pete" Hostetler, 89, of Ravenna, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at his residence. Arrangements to be announced by the Shorts Funeral Homes Ravenna Chapel.

William A. Chipps Sr.
WINDHAM - William A. Chipps Sr., 77, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born Feb. 7, 1924, in Pennsboro, W.Va., he was the son of Lonny and Mary (Hartline) Chipps. He had been a Windham resident since 1945.
Mr. Chipps was a mixer operator with Filmco in Aurora prior to his retirement.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Alberta (Claflin); sons, William A. Jr. (Nancy) of Tallmadge and Dwayne (Ginny) of Arizona; daughters, Sandra (Jim) Swiger of Newton Falls and Elaine (Jim) Honabach of Chino, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and brothers Robert of Buford, S.C. and Carl Chipps of Bladenbourgs, Md. Seven brothers and sisters died previously.
A private family service will be held with the Rev. Ruth Chartier officiating. Shorts Funeral Homes, Ravenna Chapel, is handling arrangements. Burial will be in Edinburg Cemetery in Edinburg.

Steve Lerch
Steve Lerch, 80, of Warren, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at his home.
Born Nov. 7, 1920, in Lordstown, he was the son of Michael and Suzzana (Kochan) Lerch. He lived in the Warren area his entire life.
Mr. Lerch had been employed as a steel worker for U.S. Steel for 40 years before his retirement in 1980.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Lordstown Lutheran Church and its men's group. He liked hunting, sports and gardening.
Survivors include his son, Dennis of Lordstown; daughters, Linda (Mark) Falatic of Newton Falls, Karen Lerch of Niles and Kathy Lerch of Lordstown; and one grandchild. His wife, Betty Jane (Bacher), whom he married May 17, 1952; brothers Michael, John and Paul; and sisters Julia Lott and Susan Cercel died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Lordstown Lutheran Church. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Lordstown Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by James Funeral Homes in Newton Falls.

Lena I. Brady
STOW - Lena I. Brady, 90, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001.
Born Jan. 16, 1911 in Davis, W.Va., she was the daughter of Domonic and Mary Carmel Antoline.
Mrs. Brady was a founding member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Stow. She was retired from the W.T. Grant Co.
Survivors include her sons, James (Therese) of Nashville, Tenn. and Joseph of Stow; daughter, Mary Schlarb (Don Zieber) of Brimfield; three grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and sisters, Isabella Sampson and Mary Owens of Elkins, W.Va.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Dunn-Quigley-Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home in Stow. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Stow. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

Phyllis V. Simms
Phyllis V. Simms, 75, of Ravenna, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
She was born Oct. 29, 1925, in New Plymouth.
A Stow resident for more than 60 years, Mrs. Simms moved to Ravenna 11 years ago.
She retired as vice president of WAKR TV23 with more than 40 years of service. She was an inaugural inductee into the Akron Radio Hall of Fame.
Survivors include her son, Brad, of Ravenna. Her brother, Rex, died previously.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Stow Cemetery. Redmon Funeral Home in Stow is handling the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the AMVETS or the American Heart Association.

Sharon M. Klingensmith
Sharon M. Klingensmith, 57, of 2839 Anderson Anthony Road, Warren, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, in Leavittsburg of respiratory failure.
Born Aug. 17, 1943, in Coaldale, Pa., she was the daughter of Alfred L. and Eleanor (Zucuski) Krell. She lived in the Southington and Braceville area since 1965 and was formerly of Tamaqua, Pa.
Mrs. Klingensmith worked for Packard on the line and also in housekeeping, retiring in 1994 after 25 years service.
She enjoyed shopping and taking care of her home.
Survivors include her son, Paul Pauley Jr.; three grandchildren; brothers, Alfred L. Krell of Houston, Texas; and Bruce D. Krell of Barnesville, Pa.
Private services were held Saturday at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls.

Donald R. Laflin
Donald R. Laflin, 69, of Munroe Falls Road, Kent, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Florida Hospital-Orlando in Orlando.
Born July 15, 1931 in Massillon, he was a son of Allen and Ida Laflin.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years.
Mr. Laflin was a 1951 graduate of Washington high School and was active in the Indian Guides. He was a Boy Scout Leader and a swimming merit badge counselor, a Red Cross Water Safety instructor, and he participated in the Red Cross Public Swimming Program.
Survivors include his wife Gretchen (Vosper); sons, Bradley (Jane Ferko) of Atlanta, Ga., Gordon (Patricia) of Hudson and Dustin (Tammy) of Kent; and two grandchildren. Three brothers and five sisters died previously.
Visitation will be held from noon until 1 p.m. services Saturday at the Kent United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Palmer and the Rev. Kay Dunlap officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Animal Protective League of Portage County, Inc., Attn: Ann, P.O. Box 927, Ravenna, 44266, or the Kent United Methodist Church Youth Ministry, P.O. Box 646, Kent, 44240.

Pat J. Errera, 43
Pat J. Errera, 43, of Brady Lake Road in Kent, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Akron City Hospital in Akron.
Born Jan. 10, 1958, in Grove City, Pa., he was the son of John and Pauline (Kelly) Errera.
Mr. Errera worked as a press and crane operator for the Ford Motor Company in Walton Hills.
He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, United Auto Workers Union Local 420, a volunteer at Ravenna Clothing Center, Walls School official cookie taster and was involved with Cub Scout Pack 3253.
Survivors include his wife, Annette "Nanny" (Baughman), whom he married on Aug. 20, 1977; son, P.J.; daughter, Jennifer; his parents of Kent; brothers, John, Chris and Tracy (Laurie), all of Kent; sisters, Jody (Jim) Pitts and Amy Errera, both of Kent.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Services will be held at noon on Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Harry O. Harvey officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Robert E. Keller, 70
Former Portage County resident Robert E. Keller, 70, of Akron, died Friday, March 23, 2001.
Born May 3, 1930 in Akron, he was the son of Eugene and Mae Keller.
Mr. Keller was retired from the General Tire chemical plant in Mogadore.
He served in the U.S. Army in Germany, and was a member of AA since January 1972. He was a member of the Amos H. Englebeck Masonic Lodge 751 for 29 years, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8487, and the Tadmor Shrine. He was a member of The Chapel.
He is survived by his sons, Robert (Barbara) Keller Jr. of North Canton and Douglas (Charlotte) Keller; daughters Doris Lynn (Bruce) Spurling of Portage County, Laurie (Ed) Gonzales and Janice (Steve) Bolyard; brothers Bill and Jack; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His former wife, Doris, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Adams Mason Memorial Chapel, 791 E. Market St., Akron, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Hillside Memorial Park in Akron, where military rites will be conducted by Firestone Post 3383.
Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Mary R. Collins, 87
Mary R. Collins, 87, of Ravenna Township, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born July 1, 1913, in Ravenna, she was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Vogler) Ullom. She was a lifelong Ravenna resident.
Mrs. Collins was a homemaker.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna.
Survivors include her sons, James Collins and Mark Wilson, both of Ravenna, and Chester Collins Jr. of North Carolina; daughters, Leona Ann Williams and Ardis Mortimer, both of Rootstown; Lola Kennell of Mogadore; Anita Jenkins of Deerfield; Irene Shaffer, Laura Kelly and Pamela Oostdyke, all of Ravenna, Mary Pritchard of North Carolina and Mary Louise Adams of Peninsula; 30 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; sister, Ada Warner of Ravenna. Her husband, Chester, died on April 10, 1990. Son, Derrell; daughter, Winona Wilson; one brother and two sisters died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Msgr. Robert Sabatino officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.

Clarence Phillips
WINDHAM - Clarence "Ray" Phillips, 68, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a period of failing health.
Born Nov. 4, 1932, in Proctor, W.Va., he was a son of Arthur and Jessie (Anderson) Phillips and was an area resident most of his life.
He retired as a stocker from Copperweld Steel Co. in Warren. He was a member of the steel workers union.
Mr. Phillips was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He was member of the Windham Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman and blue grass musician.
Survivors include his wife Phyliss (Holley); sons, Wayne and Mike of Windham, Brad (Karen) and Todd (Sheila) of Garrettsville; daughter Debbie (KEn) Molnar of Garrettsville; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother John Rush of Atlanta; sister Donna Rush Long of Windham. A sister Mary Parthemer and grandson Brentin died previously.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, and from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. service a the the Windham Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Bailey and the Rev. Joe Board officiating. Burial will be in Windham Cemetery.

Susan Block
Ravenna native Susan Block, 56, of Clearwater, Fla., died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at her home.
Born July 13, 1944, in Ravenna, she was the daughter of John and Florence (Myers) Kerecman Jr. She had lived in Bedford for 26 years before moving to Clearwater in 1987.
Mrs. Block was a homemaker.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Lord's Catholic Church in Clearwater. She enjoyed making crafts and researching her family tree.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth E. Sr., whom she married Feb. 9, 1961; sons, Kenneth E. (Kimberly) Jr. of Mantua, Thomas (Robin) of Maple Heights and David of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; mother and step-father, Florence and Raymond Hesketh of Mantua; and sisters, Lillian Atkinson of Mantua and Joeanne (Gary) Broz of Massachusetts. Her father, John Kerecman Jr., died Jan. 24, 1972.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where prayer services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mantua with the Rev. Thomas McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Mantua.

Belva Murphy
Belva Mae Murphy, 85, of Elk City, Kansas, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas.
Born Sept. 13, 1915, in Byesville, Ohio, she was the daughter of William and Minnie (Ingler) Aegeter. She had lived in Kansas for the past three years. She was formerly of Ravenna and Colorado.
Mrs. Murphy was a cook and she had worked at the Portage County Nursing Home.
She was a member of the Ravenna Assembly of God Church and the Senior Citizens Club of Elk City.
Survivors include her daughters, Charlotte B. Murphy and Rebecca A. Hinton, both of Elk City, and Belva Kaye Starcher of Woodbridge, Va.; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Thomas, died in 1974. A son, Herman died in 1960. Two grandsons also died previously.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hillside Cemetery in Shalersville, with the Rev. E. Tom Boytar officiating.
