William T. Leightner
At the height of his career, there were few more knowledgeable pressmen than William T. Leightner, who for more than 50 years worked for the Dix newspaper group, mainly as a mechanical superintendent specializing in the printing portion of the business.
Mr. Leightner, 90, of Mills Road, St. Clairsville, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Woodland Acres Care Center in St. Clairsville.
Born Sept. 28, 1910 in Wooster, he was the son of Roy W. and Ida (Lawrence) Leightner. As a youngster in Wooster, he started hanging out at the Daily Record doing odd jobs where his work ethic and mechanical abilities caught the eye of Emmet C. Dix, who with his father, Albert, founded the newspaper group.
Mr. Leightner eventually found himself working in the pressroom . Early on he demonstrated an aptitude for rotary presses. When the Dix family purchased the newspapers in Ravenna and, later, Kent in the 1920s and 1930s, Mr. Leightner came here to run the presses. His good looks, his pipe often set at a jaunty angle, and his droll sense of humor made him a popular figure during his years in Ravenna.
In 1939, he followed Albert V. Dix to Martins Ferry to run the presses for the Martins Ferry and Bellaire newspapers, which the Dix family had acquired. Though stationed in Martins Ferry, he was regularly called upon by other Dix newspapers to consult in the buying and installation of new presses. He helped the Dix family transition to offset printing in the 1960s and 1970s and even after retiring in the 1970s continued to consult with the company.
Besides his career in the newspaper business, he served for a time as chief of the Sunset Heights Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Hound Dog Club of St. Clairsville. Some of his favorite pastimes were going hunting and fishing, often in Canada with his boss and friend, Albert Dix.

(Josy) of Fredricksburg, Va.; daughter, Gerry (Charles) McMillan of Wooster; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Smith of Nevada and Dean Smith of Virginia; and sister, Beatrice Gaingery of Wooster.
