Peter Courtney
MANTUA TOWNSHIP - Peter Courtney, 75, died Sunday at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following an illness of several months.
Born July 17, 1922 in England, he was the son of Albert and Ethel (White) Courtney. Formerly of Sagamore Hills, he had been a resident of the Mantua area since 1974.
Mr. Courtney began working as an electrician at the Chrysler Corporation in Twinsburg in 1958 and retired in 1984.
Survivors include his brother, Barry of Mantua; and sisters, Patricia Webb of Ontario, Peggy Clark and Heather Barbara Stark, both of England. His sister, Ida Borthwick, died in 1997.
Calling hours will be held from noon until services at 2 p.m. Thursday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua. The Rev. James Lang will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township.

Douglas McDonald
RANDOLPH - Douglas H. McDonald, 68, died Saturday.
Born in Cullman, Ala., he had lived in Randolph since 1965.
Mr. McDonald retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron in 1981 after 29 years of service.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Winnie L.; sons, Darrin of Randolph and Douglas; daughters, Mrs. Pete (Denise) Sargeant of Surrey, England and Dianah of Randolph; one grandchild; brothers, Dillard of Clinton and Jack of Akron; and sister, Daisy Steadham of Hartville. His sister, Dorothy Johnston, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Mogadore, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Murray McMillan officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Nellie Boggs
Nellie Elizabeth (Pringle) Boggs, 95, of Tucson, Ariz, died Friday.
Survivors include three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Paul J. Pringle of Ravenna; and sister, Lovie Mae Riggleman of Hampstead, N.C. Her husband, William W., son James Orval, daughter, Virginia Mae Boggs King, brothers, Darious, Percy and Hartsel Pringle and sisters, Dollie Johnson and Ruth Hughes, died previously.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rock Cave Cemetery in West Virginia. Arrangements were made by Bring Funeral Home in Tucson.

Jerry Koman
MANTUA - Jerry Y. Koman, 69, died Monday at his home following a period of ill health.
Born June 10, 1928 in Cleveland, he was the son of Joseph and Frances (Sherak) Koman. He had been a Mantua-Shalersville area resident for the past 41 years.
Mr. Koman worked as an operating engineer for Stamm Contracting Co. in Mantua for 33 years. He had also owned and operated his own business, Koman Landscaping, for 15 years.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara (Richardson); son, Victor of Millersburg; daughters, Stephanie of Mantua and Diane of Stow; one grandchild; and sisters, Mary Kelly of Streetsboro, Jean Koman of Twinsburg and Jane King of Sagamore Hills.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Will Stackhouse officiating. A private family burial will be held.

E. Wayne Hunt
E. Wayne Hunt, 61, of Kent, died Monday at his home after a long illness.
Born Oct. 20, 1935 in Hinckley, he was the son of Ernest and Ethel (Allen) Hunt. He also had lived in Akron and Streetsboro.
Mr. Hunt had retired from Kennametal in Solon where he had worked as a machinist.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the 101st Airborne.
Survivors include his wife Phyllis (Justice), to whom he had been married for 31 years; son, Ethan Jr. of Georgia; daughters, Cynthia Fintok of New York and Susan Jean Onysko of Rootstown; three grandchildren; brother, Ernest of Mogadore; and sisters, Lea Brown of Cleveland and Phyllis Ackley of Streetsboro. His sister, Betty Bulfinch, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. J.W. Adkins officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Streetsboro.

Paul L. Battaglia
Paul L. Battaglia, 75, of Summit Road, Ravenna, died Friday at his home.
Born May 30, 1922 in Cleveland, he was the son of Nick L. and Providenza (Puleo) Battaglia.
Mr. Battaglia was the co-owner of Nick Battaglia & Sons and Kent Produce. He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Kent.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie "Midge" (Lohmier), whom he married Nov. 27, 1943; sons, Nick L. (Phyllis) of Kent, Paul Jr. (Barb) of Kent, Tom J. (Mary Ann) of Ravenna and Angelo A. of Ravenna; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; brother, Tony T. (Maylene) of Kent; and sisters, Josephine (Virgil) Ashton of Rootstown, Ann Zampelli of Kent, Gloria Vitantonio of Kirtland, Eleanor (Andy) Levitsky of Stow and Amy Giulitto of Ravenna. His brother, Angelo; sister, Mary DiMauro; and grandsons, Stephen Philip Battaglia and Tommy John Battaglia Jr., died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Church in Kent, with the Rev. Joseph Ruggieri officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Portage County Division, 1640 Franklin Ave., Kent 44240, or Portage County Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice, 234 S. Water St., Kent 44240.

Robert E. Bachtel
Services have been held for Robert E. Bachtel, 81, of Graham Avenue, Kent, who died Tuesday at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born July 14, 1916 in Ravenna, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bachtel.
Mr. Bachtel was a machinist at Gougler Industries in Kent and a self-employed machinist in Florida for 35 years until he retired. Until two years ago, he stayed busy doing small engine repair in his garage.
He was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his son, Russell Vaughn of Kent; daughters, Connie (Bernard) Higgins of Santee, Calif. and Faith Ann Bachtel of Cleveland; brothers, William of Akron and James of Ravenna; and sister Shirley Whitefield of Ravenna. His wife, Helen (Lewis) died in 1991. A son, Dennis L., died in 1949.
Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were handled by Bissler and Sons Funeral Home in Kent.

Phyllis D. Zumkehr
Phyllis D. Zumkehr, 58, of Lake Roger Drive, Sugar Bush Knolls, died Monday at her home after a long battle with breast cancer.
Born May 2, 1939 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Philip and Eleanor (Kanear) Donley. She had lived in Sugar Bush Knolls for 33 years.
Mrs. Zumkehr graduated from Shaker Heights High School and Ohio University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in economics. While attending college, she met and married Charles B. Zumkehr Jan. 30, 1960.
She was a homemaker, devoted mother, gardener and volunteer.
She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Kent, Elm Garden Club and Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. She was a precinct worker at the Sugar Bush Knolls village elections for 20 years.
She was a former Christ Episcopal Church Altar Guild member, past board member of the United Way of Portage County, and active in Girl Scouts.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her son, Chad P. of Cleveland; daughter, Mrs. Kevin (Jennifer) McCarthy of Westlake; one grandchild; and brothers, Terrance (Shirley) of Hudson and Denis (Marian) of Lantana, Fla.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Robert Brooks officiating. Private burial will be in Markillie Cemetery in Hudson.
Memorials may be made to Ireland Cancer Center, in care of University Hospitals of Cleveland, 11100 Euclid Ave., Cleveland 44106-5055.

Florence M. "Millie" (Snively) (Yeend) Hetterich
Florence M. "Millie" (Snively) (Yeend) Hetterich, 86, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died Friday.
Born March 6, 1911 in Hamilton, Ohio, she was married for many years to her first husband, John "Jack" Yeend of Ravenna. Following her husband's death, she married her high school sweetheart, Bob Hetterich.
Mrs. Hetterich was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. After college, she moved to Palm Beach with her first husband, where they operated Yacht Management Service.
Survivors include sons, John and Phil; daughters, Ann and Carol; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Her husbands died previously.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at the United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Fla.All County Mortuary in Lake Worth, Fla. is handling arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Hacienda Girls Ranch, Box 361097, 326 Croton Road, Melbourne, Fla. 32936-1097.

M. Georgiann Moodie
Services have been held in Phoenix, Ariz., for former Kent resident M. Georgiann Moodie, 70, of Phoenix, who died Sept. 14.
Born in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Stanley and Victoria Pilasky. She lived in Kent until her marriage. She and her husband, Robert, lived in various locations before settling in Phoenix.
She had been a member of St. Patrick Church, attended St. Patrick School and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent in 1945. She attended Kent State University.
Mrs. Moodie was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Robert E.; son, the Rev. Michael Moodie of San Francisco; daughters, Kathryn Shafer of Colorado Springs, Colo, Beth Parrott of Woodland Park, Colo. and Barbara of San Francisco; four grandchildren; brother, Roy Pilasky of Ohio; and sister Patricia Lollini of Ohio. Her brother, Ralph, died previously.
Services were held in Phoenix, with her son, the Rev. Michael Moodie, officiating. Arrangements were made by the Chapel of the Chimes in Glendale, Ariz.
Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, P.O. Box 13600, Phoenix, Ariz., 85002.

Carrie M. White
Carrie M. White, 86, died Sunday at Hospice Care Center in Fairlawn.
Born in Coleman, Ala., she had lived in the Akron and Ravenna areas for 64 years.
Mrs. White worked at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron during World War II. She later owned an operated a grocery business with her husband Bruce for 21 years and had worked with her son, Jim at White's Fish Farm in Mogadore for 20 years.
She was an avid bingo player and a Cleveland Indians fan.
Survivors include her son, Jim (Nancy) of Mogadore; daughters, Mrs. Bob (Ann) Kruger of Ft. Worth, Texas and Marlene Dobosh of Paris; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Mogadore, where services will be held at 11 a.m.Thursday, with the Rev. David Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Palmyra Cemetery.

John J. Smolak
John J. Smolak, 77, of 2918 S.R. 5, Leavittsburg, died Sunday at his daughter's residence in Hiram.
Born Feb. 21, 1920 in Rankin, Pa., he was the son of John and Mary Elizabeth (Hrabovsky) Smolak.
Mr. Smolak was a millwright for the Ohio Carpenters Union No. 171.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Newton Falls. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his son, John III, of Charleston, W.Va.; daughter, Deborah Imars of Hiram; and three grandchildren. His wife, Martha C. (Polosky), died July 6, 1997. His brothers, Michael and Steve, also died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Robert W. Lawver
Robert W. Lawver, 69, died Sunday at Hospice Care Center in Fairlawn.
He was a lifetime resident of the Ellet, Mogadore and Uniontown areas and moved to Portage Lakes in 1996.
Mr. Lawver began his career in funeral service when he was employed as a teenager by the Hopkins Funeral Home in Akron. He had served in the profession with his wife, Dorla (Dodie) Hopkins since their marriage in 1949.
He was was an officer and an active member of the Oak Hill Presbyterian Church for 56 years. He was a member of the Mogadore and Uniontown Lions Clubs, Summit County, the State of Ohio and National Funeral Directors Association and Ohio Embalmers Association.
He was a graduate of Ellet High School, attended Kent State University and graduated from Cleveland College of Mortuary Science.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his sons, Mark (Deborah) of Montrose, Ted (Mickey) of Portage Lakes and Dane; daughter, Coral (Rick) Bowers of Mogadore; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, James (Connie) of Las Vegas, Nev.; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Delbert and Phyllis Smith of Uniontown.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at Hopkins LawverFuneral Home, 547 Canton Road in Akron, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with Pastors David Frees and Cathleen Bunting officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park in Akron.
Memorials may be made to Oak Hill Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Margaret L. (Peggy) Templeton
Margaret L. (Peggy) Templeton, 82, of South Canal Street, Newton Falls, died Saturday at Quality Care Nursing Home in Cortland.
Born Sept. 28, 1914 in Echo, Pa., she was the daughter of Earl and Minnie (Forster) Cogley.
Mrs. Templeton was the operator and owner of Peggy's Beauty Salon in Newton Falls.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Newton Falls, Blue Star Mothers, and American Legion Post No. 234 in Newton Falls.
Survivors include her brothers, Laird Cogley of Windham and Gene Cogley of Echo, Pa.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, William A., whom she married Feb. 18, 1933, died June 8, 1996. A son, Norman Darl, died April 23, 1997. Her brothers, Tallmadge and Bearl Dean, both died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Newton Falls Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Newton Falls or American Legion Post No. 234 in Newton Falls.

Luther Millsaps Sr.
Former Streetsboro resident Luther Ray Millsaps Sr., 66, of Madisonville, Tenn., died Thursday at University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn.
He was the son of Ervin and Della Millsaps and had previously lived in Hudson.
Mr. Millsaps was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his sons, Owen, Joel, Michael and Luther Jr.; daughter, Rebecca Lebron; four grandchildren; and sister Novella Pruitt. His brothers, Leonard and Jerry, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home in Madisonville, Tenn. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hopewell Springs Baptist Church in Madisonville, Tenn. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

William Woodward
Former Ravenna resident William "Woody" Woodward, 40, of Ocala, Fla. died Wednesday following an automobile accident in Florida.
Born May 26, 1957, he was the son of Jack Woodward and Jo Ann (Pittman) Cunningham.
Survivors include his mother, Jo Ann Cunningham of Ocala, Fla; grandmother, Dorothy Pittman of Ravenna; uncle, John C. Pittman of Ravenna; and aunt, Sally Keattes of Tallmadge. His father Jack died previously.
Services will be announced.

Pauline M. Moore
CHARLESTOWN - Pauline M. Moore, 76, died Aug. 15 at Barberton Citizen's Hospital after a seven-week illness.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Charlestown United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Norma Bates and the Rev. Clyde Taylor officiating.
Green's Funeral Home in Mantua is handling the arrangements.
