Charles W. Litton Jr.
Charles W. "Beaver" Litton Jr., 37, of West Alexandria, died unexpectedly Saturday morning, Oct. 16, in Baton Rouge, La.
Born June 22, 1962, in Dayton, he was a 1980 graduate of Dixie High School. He served in the U.S. Army in the early 1980s, and was working with Asplundh Tree Service of Dayton in North Carolina and Louisiana following the recent storm damage.
Survivors include his mother, Gail E. Litton of West Alexandria; his father, Charles W. Litton Sr. of Springfield; a companion, Libby Grimes of West Alexandria; a son, Matthew Sawesky of Eaton; a daughter, Porsha Ann Litton of West Alexandria; a sister, Pandy L. Smith of West Alexandria; a brother, Jeff Litton of Huber Heights; aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Community Christian Church, 453 Ohio 503 South, West Alexandria, with Pastor William Douglas Bottles and Pastor Charles F. Ankney, his uncle, officiating. Burial will be in Trissell Cemetery, New Lebanon. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church. Barnes Funeral Home-Eaton Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Eva P. Miller
Eva Pauline Miller, 80, of Brookville, died Saturday, Oct. 16, at her home.
She was a member of Salem Church of the Brethren.
Her husband, Earl Miller, preceded her in death in 1986.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Susan Miller of Arcanum, Richard and Sharon Miller of Laura; grandchildren, Jeff Miller of Kettering, Alisa (Brian) Harkless of Union and Lynelle (Mike) Miller of Greenville; great-grandchildren, Christopher and Heather Harkless; a sister, Edna and Eugene Warrick of New Paris.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Gilbert-Fellers Funeral Home, Brookville, with the Rev. Larry Tyner and the Rev. Alvin Cook officiating. Burial will be in Royal Oak Memorial Gardens, Brookville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Church of the Brethren, or to Hospice of Dayton. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
Mildred D. Carico
Mildred D. Carico, 65, of Richmond, Ind., died Monday, Nov. 29, at Reid Hospital after an extended illness.
Born June 17, 1934, in Middletown, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Frances Marie (Rogers) Thompson, and had lived most of her life in Wayne and Preble counties. She was a nursing assistant, and attended the Lewisburg Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Carico, on Feb. 28, 1981; one sister; and one brother.
Survivors include two daughters, Kristy K. Hatch of New Paris and Becky Nielsen of Richmond, Ind.; five sons, James Carico Jr., Dan Carico, John Carico and Tim Carico, all of Richmond, Ind., and Keith Carico of Eaton.
Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Julie Jones and Josephine Baker, both of Eaton, Loretta Seal of Richmond, Ind., and Sadie Stewart of Greenville; a brother, John Stewart of Greenville; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Thursday, Dec. 2, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Brett D. Karanovich officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.
Arthur A. Hall
Arthur Alan "Al" Hall, 61, of Chicken Bristle Road, Farmersville, died Monday, Nov. 29, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
Born June 14, 1938, he was the son of Clara Faris, and was a 1956 graduate of Farmersville High School. He was a machinist and retired from the Elano Corporation in August after 13 years of service.
Survivors include a son, Doug Hall of Grants, N.M.; one granddaughter, Niki Gazitas of Florida; and stepfather, Ray Puls of Toledo.
Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 4, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Gary Wood officiating.
Barbara J. Smith
Barbara J. Smith, 69, of New Lebanon, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Harborside Health Care Center in New Lebanon following a lengthy illness.
Born July 20, 1930, in Dayton, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Hazel (Kindley) Bowsman. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of New Lebanon. Mrs. Smith had worked at McCall's in Dayton in the early 1950s and in the cafeteria of the New Lebanon schools in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
She was preceded in death on March 11 by her husband, William W. Smith, whom she married Dec. 24, 1954; and a sister, Thelma Green.
Survivors include one son, Harry W. Smith of New Lebanon; and two daughters, Hazel L. and Lori K. Smith, both of New Lebanon; and a sister, Donna Hunt of New Lebanon.
Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 4, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with Pastor James Whorton officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
Monnie M. Roach
Monnie M. Roach, 80, of South Street, Gratis, died Thursday, Dec. 2, at Middletown Hospital in Middletown.
Born May 4, 1919, in LaFollette, Tenn., she was the daughter of Alec and Alice (Sweat) Wilson. She was employed at Baxter Laboratories and retired in 1990 after 10 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Roach; sisters, Ruby Wilson and Shirley Wilson; and brothers, Estel Wilson, Alec Wilson and Lawrence Wilson.
Survivors include two sons, John Wyatt of Gratis and Alex Wyatt of Cincinnati; two daughters, Ruby Miller and Wanda Kitts, both of LaFollette, Tenn.; three sisters, Fannie Henegar of Cincinnati, Eva Moses of Gratis and Alice Violet of LaFollette, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were Sunday, Dec. 5, at the First Baptist Church, Gratis, with the Rev. Frankie Hunt officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, Gratis, was in charge of arrangements.
Mildred A. Barger
Mildred A. Barger, 83, of Camden, died Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 1, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Born June 15, 1916, she was the daughter of Roy and Florence (Eubanks) Garrison. She attended the Somerville United Presbyterian Church.
On July 7, 1934, she married Adrian Barger Sr. in Hamilton, and he preceded her in death on March 4, 1981.
Survivors include her children, William R. Barger and wife Beverly, John M. Barger Sr. and wife Jean, all of Hamilton, Wanda Bond and husband Lelon, Mary Gabbard and husband James, Adrian Barger Jr. and wife Linda, Judith Quattro and husband John, all of Camden, Harold Barger and wife Debbie of West Alexandria; a daughter-in-law Betty Barger of Killeen, Texas.
Also surviving are 30 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; seven brothers and sisters, James Garrison of Boston, Mass., Thelma Mitchell of Middletown, Ada Setser of Deloris, Colo., Theresa Reuman and Anna Smith, both of Hamilton, Martha Pelton of Lithia, Fla., and Elsa Wagner of Moorehead, Iowa.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two daughters in infancy, Hilda Louise Barger and Donna Jean Barger; a son, Thomas Barger; three brothers, Walter, George and Ray Garrison; and four sisters, Lillian Jones, Mary Haag, Janet Snapp and Matilda Cox.
Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 6, at Somerville Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. George W. Witmer officiating. Burial was in College Corner Cemetery, Union County, Ind. Webb Noonan Funeral Home, Hamilton, was in charge of arrangements.
Helen V. House
Helen V. House, 73, of Mesa, Ariz., died Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Mesa Lutheran Hospital.
Born Feb. 8, 1926, southwest of Eaton, she was the daughter of Norman and Louise (Rust) Houser.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, William Burdette House, whom she married May 16, 1947; two daughters, Margaret E. "Peggy" Clark and Julia Ann House, both of Mesa, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Lisa Ann Clark and Carla Robyn Clark, both of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Paul Gene Houser of New Paris and James T. Houser of Sun City, Ariz.; and two sisters, Mable Smith of Eaton and Mary Ridgeway of Huntington, Ind.
Private services were held for the family. A memorial service is planned.
Norma J. Koeller
Norma J. Koeller, 58, of Eaton, died Saturday, Dec. 4, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton after an extended illness.
Born Feb. 21, 1941, in Dayton, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ethel (Schindler) Stoner, and had lived most of her life in Preble County. She was a graduate of Lanier High School, and had worked at Green/Tokai Mfg. in Brookville.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Don Puckett of Eaton; sons David Phillips and Scott Phillips, both of Eaton, and Billy Allison of Brookville; six grandchildren; a brother, Walter Stoner of Richmond, Ind.; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Brian Phillips and Eddie Phillips; a brother, Robert I. Stoner; and a sister, Martha Allison.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Naomi R. Helsley
Naomi Ruth Helsley, 63, of Eaton, died Saturday, Dec. 4, at her home.
Born Dec. 25, 1935, in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late Almos and Augusta (Chettele) Hartman.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Mearle, Floyd, Wes, Sam, Paul and Howard Hartman; and one sister, Clara Crank.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Lester C. III and Jeanie Helsley of Eaton, Thomas and Judy Helsley of Richmond, Ind.; daughters and sons-in law, Rosie Bowling of Eaton, Darlene and Gary Wyatt of Somerville, Tina and Dave Smith of Dayton; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her former husband, Lester Helsley of Somerville.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Somerville Pentecostal Church, with the Rev. Riley Parker and the Rev. Don McMurch officiating. The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. at the church, prior to services. Burial will follow at Somerville Cemetery. R.C. Nein & Sons-Thompson Funeral Home, Camden, is in charge of arrangements.
Lucile P. Leone
Lucile Petry Leone, 97, of San Francisco, Calif., died Thursday, Nov. 25.
Born Jan. 23, 1902, at "Frog Heaven" in Preble County, she was the sole child of David A. and Dora Belle (Murray) Petry. The family later moved to Delaware, where she earned her B.A. in 1924 from the University of Delaware.
In 1927, she became a registered nurse while attending Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing and earned her M.A. in nursing education in 1929 from Columbia University.
During World War II, she organized the Cadet Nurse Corps program which focused on increasing the number of nurses for both civilian and military needs. During this time 124,000 nurses were trained. As a result of this achievement, she was promoted at the U.S. Public Health Service as assistant surgeon general, the first woman and nurse to ever hold this position, a rank equivalent to rear admiral.
She continued to promote the education of nurses and the profession worldwide for which she received numerous awards including the Florence Nightingale Medal of the International Red Cross, the Distinguished Service Award from the United States Public Health Service, the American Public Health Association's Lasker Award (American equivalent to the Nobel Prize).
Mrs. Leone was named by the University of Maryland School of Nursing as one of seven who significantly impacted the nursing profession. The last award ranks her with Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton. Four years ago, she received her 10th honorary doctorate degree from Johns Hopkins University.
She married Nicholas C. Leone in 1952, but they later divorced in 1967 and left no direct descendants.
At her request, no services were held.
