Joan S. Pentecost
Joan S. Pentecost, 73, of Lakeland, Fla., and formerly of Germantown, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, in Lakeland.
Born April 4, 1924, in Wayne County, Ind., she was the daughter of Harold L. and Gladys Pearl (Stevens) Clements. She had worked as a bookkeeper at the Germantown and Franklin IGA stores, and was a member of the Lutheran Church and Eastern Star in Richmond, Ind.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, F. Eugene Pentecost; a son, Ronald Pentecost of Erlanger, Ky.; daughters and son-in-law, Bonnie and Daniel Ernst of Thompson Station, Tenn., and Deborah Gillum of Germantown; a sister, Jean Montgomery of Lakeland, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, David Pentecost, in 1983.
Funeral services were Monday, May 26, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Mark Gardner officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.

John R. Hobbs
John R. Hobbs, 70, of Gratis Township died Friday, May 23, 1997, at his home.
Born April 24, 1927, in Rogers, Ky., he was the son of Douglas and Mary (Carroll) Hobbs. He retired in 1989 from AK Steel after 38 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Community Harvest Church in Germantown.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Ella F. (Sweeney) Hobbs; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Donella Hobbs of West Alexandria; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Enrique Lopez of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Emery Hobbs of Stanton, Ky.; sisters, Irene Haggard of Lexington, Ky., and Garnette Mills of Decatur, Ala.; grandchildren, Jeremy Hobbs, Heather Murrell, Brook and Brandy Templin; and a great-granddaughter, Sierra Hobbs.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Irving and Cecil Hobbs; and two sisters, Loretta Oaks and Zeola Hall.
Funeral services were Tuesday, May 27, at Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Duane Harney officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Middletown.

John P. Bennett
John P. "Jack" Bennett, 78, of Dayton, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at Miami Valley Hospital.
Born March 29, 1919, in Eaton, he was the son of the late Charles and Marie (Cole) Bennett, and had lived in Dayton since 1942. He was a retired plumber from GM-Frigidaire after 30 years. Mr. Bennett was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of American Legion Post #763 of Beavercreek, Frigidaire Retirees' Club and Local 801 of Dayton.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Inez M. (Heeter) Bennett; two sons and daughter-in-law, Richard J. and Elizabeth Bennett, and Charles A. Bennett, all of Dayton; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Ernie Miller of Englewood; four grandchildren, Adam Charles Bennett, Dawn Michelle Bennett, Kimberly Kneisly and Michael D. Miller; two great-grandchildren, Adam Charles Bennett Jr. and Danielle Kneisly; and a special friend, Sue DeLaney.
Private funeral services will be at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark Hoying officiating. There will be no public calling. Burial will be in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Michael B. Eby
Michael Brandon Eby, 18, of Camden, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, near Eaton.
He was born Dec. 27, 1978, in Oxford, and was a student at Preble Shawnee High School.
Survivors include his mother, Tawny (Rice) Eby of Camden; his father, Michael Eby of Eaton; two brothers, Matthew "Kyle" Eby and Morgan Tyler Eby; maternal grandparents, Denver and Kay Rice of Camden; paternal grandparents, S. Morris and Micki Eby of Eaton; great-grandmothers, Ruby Rice and Goldie Cline, both of Camden; great-great-grandmother, Ruth Mehaffey of West Union, Ohio.
Also surviving are aunts and uncles, Chandra (Wendell) Peak and Shawn (Jeff) Stringfield, all of Camden, Teresa Lay of Eaton, Debra Lochner of Lewisburg, Tamara Marcum of Dayton and Anthony Eby of Cincinnati.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at R.C. Nein and Sons Funeral Home, Camden, with the Rev. Bobby Hollon officiating. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.

Rodney D. Flory
Rodney D. Flory, 26, of Lexington Road, Eaton, died Sunday, May 25, 1997, at Hospice of Dayton after an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 19, 1970, in Versailles, Ky. He was employed at Parker Hannifin in Eaton for six years, and was a member of Lewisburg First Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Liz" (Ison) Flory; a son, Austin D. Flory and one expected child; father, Joseph W. Flory of West Manchester; mother and stepfather, Helen and Steven Chesser of Lewisburg; and one brother, Randall "Randy" Flory of Eaton.
Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, May 28, at Lewisburg First Missionary Baptist Church, 608 N. Commerce St., Lewisburg, with the Rev. George W. Pennington officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery near West Alexandria. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the church. Barnes Funeral Home-Lewisburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lewisburg First Missionary Baptist Church, and/or to Hospice of Dayton.

W. Hamer Thompson
W. Hamer Thompson, 80, of U.S. 35 East, West Alexandria, died Sunday, May 25, 1997, at Canterbury Care Center in New Lebanon.
Born May 23, 1917, in Union County, Ohio, he was the son of Emmit Vernon and Ada Ella (Wilgus) Thompson. He had retired from G.S. Supply in Dayton, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Virginia (Long) Thompson; three sons, Hamer Kay Thompson of Centerburg, Ohio, Dale Thompson of West Alexandria and Loyal Lee Thompson of Sidney; four daughters, Lila Ruth Adamson of Eldorado, Nympha Jane Grill of New Paris, Vera Faye Craig of Ewing, Ky., and Norma Irene Henderson of Youngstown; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, followed by entombment in Royal Oak Cemetery in Brookville.

Michael B. Eby
Michael Brandon Eby, 18, of Camden, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, near Eaton.
He was born Dec. 27, 1978, in Oxford, and was a student at Preble Shawnee High School.

He was preceded in death by his uncle, Denver K. "Denny" Rice of Hamilton on May 7, 1997.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 29, at R.C. Nein and Sons Funeral Home, Camden, with the Rev. Bobby Hollon officiating. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden.

James C. Hayes
James Chester Hays, M.D., 82, of Canton, died May 24, 1997, at Bethany Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Born in Fairhaven, he was the son of the late Arthur and Nellie Hays. He received his bachelor of science degree from Ohio State University in 1939 and doctor of medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1943, where he began a lifetime membership in Phi Chi, a medical fraternity.
He was a World War II veteran, serving as captain in the Army Medical Corps Pacific Theater. He began his medical practice in Canton in 1946.
During his career, he was active on the staff of Mercy, Timken Mercy and Aultman Hospitals. He was past president of the Canton Academy of Medicine, a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, the Lathrop Lodge #676, F and AM, ASSR Valley of Canton, Tadmor Shrine and the Shrine Luncheon, Retired Executive and Professional Men's club and a past member of the Wilderness Center and the Stark County Historical Society.
He supported community causes through the Kiwanis Club of Canton and as a charter member of the YMCA Canton Area Heritage Club.
He retired from his medical career in 1986.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margaret (Miller) Hays; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Hal Rogers; and granddaughters Chelsea and Lauri Rogers all of Cleveland; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Oyster of Alliance and Jeannette Hays of Camden; and a brother-in-law, John W. Miller of Alliance, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Francis Hays and a sister Marie Snape.
A memorial service was held at Trinity United Church of Christ on Wednesday, May 28.
Memorial contributions may be made to the YMCA Permanent Endowment Fund or Trinity United Church of Christ. The Schneeberger Funeral Home, Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie M. Gay
Nellie M. Gay, 86, formerly of Woodview Commons, Eaton, died Tuesday, May 27, 1997, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in Moraine.
Born June 14, 1910 in Tennessee, she was the daughter of Shelby and Sara (Easterly) Rich. She retired in 1969 from Wolfson Mfg. in Cincinnati and attended the First Church of God in Camden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Goodloe Gay in 1979; and eight brothers and sisters.
Survivors include a son, Victor W. Winningham Jr. of Cincinnati; a brother, Noel Rich of Camden; grandsons, Glenn, Lawrence and Dale Winningham; five great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 29 at Barnes Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Greg F. Jackson officiating. Burial was in Tomlinson Cemetery, Muncie, Ind.

Donald E. Taylor
Donald E. Taylor, 73, died Wednesday, May 28, 1997 at Grandview Hospital, Dayton.
Born Aug. 26, 1923 in Oregonia, he was the son of the late Roy and Wiona (Plymire) Taylor. He received a bachelor of science degree from Wilmington College and a master's degree from the Ohio State University.
He was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran. He retired as a teacher from Eaton City Schools.
He was a member of The Church of Christ, Eaton; past master F&AM Lodge #324, Sabina; past patron of OES, Loyal Chapter #144, Sabina; member of the former Eaton Kiwanis club; life member Ohio Retired Teachers Association; and Preble County Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include his wife whom he married Sept. 9, 1945, Ardyth Jean (McClure) Taylor; a son, Kevin K. Taylor of Camden; three grandsons, Larry Lee, Chad Ryan and Josh Michael Taylor; a granddaughter, Holly Marie Taylor; a great-granddaughter, Kendra; a brother, Harold E. Taylor of Wilmington; two nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence L. Taylor.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 31 at the Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, with the Rev. Ivan LaValle officiating. Burial was in Centerville Cemetery, Lees Creek.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Christ, 725 U.S. 35 West, Eaton, Ohio 45320.
