Edna White
Edna White, 99, of Camden, died Monday, June 30, 1997, at Woodland Country Manor near Somerville.
Born Nov. 27, 1897, she was the daughter of the late George and Emma Jane (Ballinger) Miller, and was a lifelong resident of Israel Township.
Her husband, Lerton C. White, whom she married on Feb. 24, 1914, died in 1959. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Della White.
Survivors include two sons, Burdette White and wife Pauline of Eaton, and Harold White of Camden; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at R.C. Nein and Sons-Limber Funeral Home, 249 N. Main St., Camden, with the Rev. Ken Barton officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Camden. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, at the funeral home.

Merlin F. Steele
Merlin F. Steele, 78, of New Paris, died Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
Born June 3, 1919, in Phillipsburg, he was the son of George Sr. and Bessie (Hefelfinger) Steele. He retired in 1983 from Johnson Sheet Metal in Richmond, Ind.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Evelyn I. (Brown) Steele; sons and daughters-in-law, Donald E. Steele of New Paris, David and Susan Steele of Eaton, James A. and Robin Steele of West Manchester; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara J. and Jerry Westbrook of New Paris.
Also surviving are six grandchildren, Cynthia (Scott) Coddington, Debra Westbrook, Julie and Jennifer Steele, Laura and Joshua Steele; brothers, Kenneth Steele and George Steele Jr., both of New Paris; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Steele and Garland Steele; and a sister, Lucille Albert.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 12, at Barnes Funeral Home-New Paris Chapel, with the Rev. Reggie Osborne officiating. Burial was in Springlawn Cemetery, New Paris.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Northwest Emergency Squad in New Paris.
Mark S. Shaffer
Mark Stephen Shaffer, 38, of 4309 Columbia Pike, Apt. 709, Arlington, Va., died Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at Hospice of Northern Virginia in Arlington.
He was born March 13, 1959, the son of Alva Eugene and Betty (Gray) Shaffer. He was a 1977 graduate of Eaton High School, where he was a member of the Chess Club and Drama Club. He was employed as a restaurant bartender.
Survivors include a brother, James G. Shaffer of Eaton; three half brothers, Gene Sandlin of Camden, Alvie Sandlin of West Alexandria and Leonard Sandlin of Richmond, Ind.; aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted in Eaton at a later date.
William E. Goos
William Ernst Goos, 42, of Eaton, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.
Born Dec. 8, 1954, in Hamilton, he was a 1973 graduate of Talawanda High School and a 1982 graduate of Ohio State University. Before entering college, he worked for Elder-Beerman and Hamilton Tool Company. He was a chartered financial consultant for the Union Central and the Oxford Financial Companies.
Mr. Goos was an organizational director for the Ohio Farm Bureau in Preble, Darke and Miami counties, and received many awards from the Ohio Farm Bureau for outstanding achievements. He was a member and past president of the Saddle and Sirloin Club at Ohio State University. He was a member of several professional organizations; and while active in 4-H, received numerous awards and championships with cattle and sheep.
The last year of his life was spent at his beach home in Puerto Morelos, Mexico.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy; and his parents, Ernest M. and Frances (Tolley) Goos of Hamilton.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 12, at Webb-Noonan Funeral Home, Hamilton, followed by burial in Venice Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Glenn M. Ashworth
Glenn M. Ashworth, 78, of 209 E. Glen Drive, Bellefontaine, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus.
Born May 13, 1919, in Eaton, he was the son of the late Hawley Thurman and Ethel Mae Lee Ashworth. He and his wife retired to Florida in 1981 after 27 years of owning Ashworth's TV Sales and Service in Eaton. They moved to Bellefontaine in 1991 when he became an investor and helped build Tree Links Golf Course with his daughter and son-in-law.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Palm Harbor, Fla., and Harold Kerr Post of the American Legion. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart, Victory Medal, American Theatre Ribbon -- European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with one Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a charter member of the Lionel Train Collections Association.
Survivors include his wife, Lois J. (Rurode) Ashworth, whom he married Dec. 25, 1945, in Eaton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and William Maybrook of Chicago, Ill., and Diana and Arthur Costin of Bellefontaine; one brother, Lowell Ashworth of Eaton; six grandchildren, Dr. Scott Costin and Alexa Costin of Bellefontaine, Kristin Gurke of Naperville, Ill., Michelle Morse of Chicago, Ill., Andrew Maybrook of Budapest, Hungary, and Jonathan Maybrook of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one sister, Geraldine Dwyer of Eaton.
Funeral services were Monday, July 14, at Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine, with the Rev. Gene Marine officiating. Burial, with military services, was in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Sarah P. Charles
Sarah Pauline Charles, 91, of Eaton, formerly of 130 E. Israel St., died Friday, July 11, 1997, at Heartland of Eaton.
She was a member of the First Church of God in Eaton.
Mrs. Charles was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil R. Charles; and a brother, Thomas Williams.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Marlene and Bill Rice, Marilyn and Harry Thrush, Rebecca and Dennis Rice; grandchildren, Donna Meyer, Peggy and Terry Carroll, Michael and Tammy Rice, Jeremy Rice, Julia and Mark Bailey; great-grandchildren, Chad and fiancee´Renee, Jason, Shane, Seth, Caleb and Morgan; and a great-great-granddaughter, Kyra.
Funeral services were Monday, July 14, at Gilbert-Fellers Funeral Home, Brookville, with Pastor Jerry Reynolds officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis.
Beulah M. Geis
Beulah Mae Cook Geis, 61, of 17 N. Main St., Buffalo, Wyo., died Friday, July 11, 1997, at Greenville.
She was born Aug. 1, 1935, in Hamilton. She and her husband had farmed at Liberty, Boston and Winchester, all in Ind., and Eaton. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo, Wyo.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Gerald Geis, whom she married May 1, 1954; her father, Paul R. Cook of Camden; her mother, Linnie (Caudill) Cook of Camden; three sons, Paul Geis of Buffalo, Wyo., Bryan Geis of Greenville and Bob Geis of Bloomington, Ind.; three daughters, Cindy Dunaway of Plainfield, Ind., Terri Funk of Farmland, Ind., and Victoria Fosdick of New Paris; 13 grandchildren; and two sisters, Barbara Gray and Phyllis Johnson, both of Camden.
Funeral services were Monday, July 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richmond, Ind., followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery, Liberty, Ind. Riggle-Waltermann Funeral Home, Richmond, Ind., was in charge of arrangements.

Anson H. Brady
Anson H. Brady, 78, of Hamilton, formerly of Camden, died Sunday morning, July 13, 1997, at Glenn Meadows Nursing Home in Hamilton after an extended illness.
Born Aug. 17, 1918, in Union County, Ind., he was the son of Irving O. and Mary Ina (Snowden) Brady. He was a retired truck driver for Plastic Pack at Jackson Center, Ohio, and had lived in Camden from 1985 to 1996 before moving to Hamilton. He was a U.S. Marines veteran of World War II, and a charter member of the Old Fairfield Masonic Lodge of Fairfield, Ind.
Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Grace L. (Stanton) Brady; two sons, Paul R. Brady of Oxford and Michael L. Brady of Casper, Wyo.; a stepson, Tim Livers of Cleves; stepdaughters, Patricia G. Livers of Creston, Calif., Mary Lou Livers of Hamilton, Teresa A. Livers of College Corner, Ind., Priscilla Newton of Hamilton and Alvina M. Hart of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary B. Brandenburg of College Corner, Ind.
Funeral Mass was Tuesday, July 15, at Visitation Catholic Church, Eaton, with the Rev. Ralph Lawrence officiating. Burial was in Preble Memory Gardens, West Alexandria. Barnes Funeral Home-Preble Memory Gardens Chapel, West Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements.
Maynard J. Spitler
Maynard J. Spitler, 74, of Enterprise Road, West Alexandria, died unexpectedly Monday, July 7, 1997, at his home.
He was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Preble County. He had retired as a carpenter from the Preble County Lumber Company.
Survivors include many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Delmont Spitler, in 1990; and his mother, Grace (Borgwardt) Spitler, in 1975.
Funeral services were Monday, July 14, at Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, West Alexandria, with the Rev. Larry Kettlehake officiating. Burial was in Twin Valley Cemetery, West Alexandria.
Beulah Petry
Beulah Cripe Petry, 69, of 236 2nd St., St. Maries, Idaho, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
A native of Eaton, she was a graduate of Lanier High School. She moved to Idaho in the mid-'60s.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Petry; her mother, Lura Cripe of Eaton; two sisters, Leanna Riley of Eaton and Miriam Sharritt of Brookville; three brothers, Junior Cripe of Camden, Paul Cripe of Springfield and Harvey Cripe of West Milton.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ora Cripe.
Funeral services and burial will be in St. Maries, Idaho.
Ota M. Marling
Ota Mary (Bolton) Marling, 97, of Paris Crossing, Ind., died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at the home of her daughter.
Born March 13, 1900. at North Vernon, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mina (Polk) Bolton. She was a member of the Coffee Creek Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Marling, on Nov. 26, 1987.
Survivors include four sons, John W. Marling of Liberty, Ind., David G. Marling of Eaton, Ray B. Marling and Max E. Marling, both of Paris Crossing, Ind.; four daughters, Elsie Luedeman of Paris Crossing, Ind., Marilyn Galliher of Comiskey, Ind., Marjorie J. Morin of Angola, Ind., and Nancy G. Fisk of Big Sandy, Texas; 28 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Harold and Everett Bolton; three sisters, Dorothy Simmons, Marjorie Loyd and Carrie Bolton; a granddaughter, a great-grandson and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Coffee Creek Christian Church, with the Rev. Will Marling and Rev. Tim Underhill officiating. Burial will be in Cana Cemetery. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services. Adams Funeral Home, Crothersville, Ind., is in charge of arrangements.
