HOY
Burton L. Hoy, 89, of Grover Hill, died at 12:48 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Lincolnway Home near Middle Point.
He was born April 17, 1915, in Paulding County, the son of the late Eladore and Freeda (Hoffman) Hoy. On December 24, 1935, he married Loma Dunlap, who survives in Grover Hill.
Mr. Hoy was a truck driver for 30 years for Union Quarries in Van Wert. He had also owned and operated Hoy’s Motor Sales in Grover Hill and had held an auctioneer’s license. He was a member of Moose Lodge 1120 in Van Wert and the Paulding Eagles and was a life member of the Grover Hill Veterans of Foreign Wars post and of the Defiance Elks Lodge. He was a “jack of all trades” a lover of horses, owning many during his lifetime, was a licensed pilot and owned his own airplane. He will be missed by his loving wife and family and many friends.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Greta (John) Szabo of Toledo and Marcia (Robert) Priest of Van Wert; seven grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Max.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 18, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Paul Miller officiating. Burial will be in Middle Creek Cemetery in Grover Hill.
Calling hours are 2-8 p.m. Sunday, April 17, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grover Hill EMS Squad.

MARTIN
Truman C. Martin, 88, of Van Wert, died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Van Wert County Hospital.
He was born May 25, 1916, in Hoaglin Township, Van Wert County, the son of the late Harry and Ethel (Coil) Martin. On June 24, 1943, he married Betty Graham, who survives in Van Wert.
Mr. Martin was a retired vice president of the former Van Wert National Bank in Van Wert. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Van Wert, a past president of the Van Wert Area Chamber of Commerce board, a life member of the American Red Cross, a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose lodge in Van Wert and a former member of the Van Wert Sertoma Club. He also served as a U.S. Army Air Corps musician during World War II.
Survivors include a son, Michael (Karen) Martin of Van Wert; one daughter, Molly Holmes of Paulding; four grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. William Haggis II officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at the funeral home.

WILLIAMSON
Vaughn E. Williamson, 91, of 720 George St., died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Van Wert Manor nursing home in Van Wert.
He was born April 16, 1914, in Scott, the son of the late Morgan and Emma M. (Jenkins) Williamson. On March 10, 1936, he married Cecile Gertrude Hartzog, who died May 18, 1996.
Mr. Williamson retired from Borden's Cheese in Van Wert with more than 30 years of service. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was church financial secretary for 25 years. He was a member of Van Wert Lodge 218, Free & Accepted Masons and a member of the former Van Wert Men's Garden Club (now Gardeners of Van Wert County).
Survivors include a son, Gregory Alan (Marsha) Williamson of Van Wert; three daughters, Patty Lou DeArmnd of Van Wert, Sue E. (Leonard) Fairfield of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Diana (Garry) Shultz of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; a brother, Leo (Sue) Williamson of Van Wert; two sisters, Rea Stripe and Flo Galloway, both of Van Wert; five grandchildren, Carmen McGee, Trisha Wiggins, Adam, Matthew and Tom Williamson, and six great-grandchildren, Samara Pollock, Katie Vess, Jordyne Wiggins, Zoe McGee, Noah Williamson and Dillon Williamson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Joy Williamson, and two sisters, Gay Huey and Ilo Monzingo.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Douglas Stockton and Rev. Paul W. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Scott Cemetery.
Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church.

LANE
Thelma R. Lane, 87, of Van Wert, died at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Vancrest Health Care Center in Va Wert.
She was born November 5, 1917, in Van Wert County, the daughter of the late Albert and Lura (Fisher) LeMar. On September 2, 1943, she married Edgar M. Lane, who died September 2, 1991.
Mrs. Lane formerly worked at Westinghouse Corporation in Lima and the G.C. Murphy store in Defiance. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Van Wert.
Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Lane and Beverly Martinez, both of Van Wert; two brothers, Glenn (Kay) LeMar of Lima and Don (Doria) LeMar of Cridersville; two sisters, Glenna (Carl) Carmean of Spencerville and Bernice (Harold) Witten of Melbourne, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, Lee Wessel of Palmyra, Neb., and Jack Sisson of Columbus Grove; a sister-in-law, Joanne LeMar of Lima; one grandchild, Nichola Spear of Van Wert, and a great-grandchild, Zachary Spear of Van Wert.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert LeMar Jr. and Roger LeMar, and three sisters, Dorothy Cole, Shirley Sisson and Millie Wessel.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 2, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Van Wert, with the Rev. Tim Burden officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.
Calling hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, and a half-hour prior to services Monday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Van Wert.

PLACKE
Esther M. Placke, 82, of Van Wert, died at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Vancrest Health Care Center in Van Wert.
She was born November 1, 1922, in Van Wert, the daughter of the late Ira and Mary Eleanor (Callahan) Faller. She married Norbert Placke, who died in 1977.
Mrs. Placke worked at Rager’s Meadow Lane Food Service. She was a member of First United Brethren in Christ Church in Van Wert.
Survivors include a son, Richard Placke of Van Wert; two sisters, Margaret Keltner and Becky Zirkle; one grandson, Nathaniel Placke of Van Wert; a granddaughter, Nienna Placke of Greenwood, S.C., and two great-grandsons, Gaberille and Devin Placke.
She was preceded in death by a brother, “Tiny” Faller.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, with Pastor Ryan Clark of First United Brethren in Christ Church officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery near Middle Point.
Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

HOEKEN
William L. Hoeken, 95, of Van Wert, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at Convoy Care Center.
He was born February 17, 1910, in Van Wert, the son of the late William T. and Sylvia N. (Terry) Hoeken. On January 10, 1937, he married Berniece Keltner, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Hoeken was a foreman at Continental Can Company, retiring in 1972. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Van Wert.
Survivors include a daughter, Elise Stevens of Ohio City; two grandchildren, Brent (Vicki) Stevens of Constantine, Mich., and David (Anne Marie) Stevens of Delray Beach, Fla., and four great-grandchildren, Ashley, Taylor, Greyson and Aleida Stevens.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert Stevens, and a sister, Lenore Kennedy.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Paul Miller officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.
Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Monday, May 2, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church in Van Wert.

CRYER
Duane LaVerne Cryer, 80, formerly of Van Wert, died at 9:35 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at the Golden Autumn Group Home in Surprise, Ariz.
He was born August 18, 1924, in Paulding County, the son of the late Leonard G. and May Hulda (Coil) Cryer. In 1947, he married Mary Lou Davies, who died in March 1975. He then married Mildred Rice Ferris, who survives.
Mr. Cryer was a mechanical superintendent with C&C Construction from 1949-1975, then worked for Shambaugh & Son Construction in Fort Wayne, Ind., until his retirement in 1987. He served in the U.S. Navy on transport ships during World War II, from May 1944-March 1946. Memberships included Plumbers and Pipefitters Union 166 in Fort Wayne, the National Plumbers and Pipefitters Union and American Legion Post 178, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5803 and Lodge 1197, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, all in Van Wert.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Terry William (Sharon) Cryer; four sisters, Lois Miller of New Haven, Ind., Phyllis Rogers of Van Wert, Mary Manship of Columbus and Sharon Hoffhines of Rockford, and three grandchildren, Jeremy Joseph Cryer and Amanda Griffiths of Arizona, and Cassy Rose of Lexington, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Duane, and three brothers, Russell, Raymond and Howard Cryer.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Paul W. Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Venedocia Cemetery.
Calling hours are noon until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
