Carl Bowen
RITTMAN -- Carl L. "Hoppy" Bowen, 77, formerly of Rittman, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Portage County Nursing Home in Ravenna.
Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Rittman Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Heasley officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are being handled by Gillman Funeral Home, Rittman.
Memorial contributions may be made to Howard A. Bair Post No. 423, P.O. Box 542, Rittman 44270.
He was born July 30, 1924, in Taylor County, Ky., to Frank and Gladys (Benningfield) Bowen.
Surviving are a brother, William Bowen of Littleton, Colo. and a sister, Dorothy Takis of California.

Dennis Austen Jr.
JEROMESVILLE -- Dennis T. Austen Jr., 73, 19 W. South St., died Friday evening, Aug. 10, 2001, at Samaritan Regional Health System.
Private family graveside services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Jeromesville Cemetery with Pastor Alan Smearsoll officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Fickes Funeral Homes, Jeromesville, is handling arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Jeromesville Emergency Squad.
He was born May 30, 1928, in Jeromesville, to Dennis T. and Lois L. (Pocock) Austen Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Anna M. (Clark) Austen, to whom he was married April 26, 1947; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Diane Austen of Wooster, Michael and Julie Austen of Shelby and Mark and Jackie Austen of Hayesville; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Doris Robison and Janice Harned, both of Ashland and Lorine Austen of Mansfield and a brother, Jim Austen of Ashland.

James Edwards
BREWSTER -- James R. "Quazi" Edwards, 35, of Brewster, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Akron General Medical Center, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Massillon on Aug. 5.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Spidell Funeral Home in Brewster with Pastor Merlin Kerstetter officiating. Burial will be at Union Lawn Cemetery in Navarre.
Friends may call tonight (Monday) from 6-9 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Church of Christ, 215 Superior St. NE, Brewster 44613.
He was born June 6, 1966, in Orrville, to Harley R. and Beverly (Elden) Edwards.
He is survived by his mother of Brewster; a sister, Valerie Shook of Brewster and a brother, Scott Edwards of Brewster.

Olivia Wills
WOOSTER -- Olivia Dale Wills, daughter of Greg A. and Diana Marie (Lawrence) Wills, 1051 Douglas Drive, died at birth Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Canton Aultman Hospital.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, Wooster, with pastor Bob Fetterhoff officiating.
Friends may call Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Surviving in addition to her parents are brothers Broch and Parker of the home; paternal grandmother Bette Anne Spreng of New Philadelphia; and maternal grandparents David and Dianna Lawrence of New Philadelphia.

Kathleen Mast
MILLERSBURG -- Kathleen "Kathy" Ann Mast, 53, the daughter of Ray Jr. and Gladys Mast, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Majora Lane Care Center.
She struggled about 26 years with the debilitating disease, leukodystrophy.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Berlin Cemetery with pastor Ernie Hershberger officiating.
She is survived by her parents; two brothers, Rod and wife Gail and Timothy and wife Doris; nieces; nephews; aunts; uncles and many friends.
Family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Holmes County, 931 Wooster Road, Millersburg 44654 or Light House Ministries, in care of First Mennonite Church, 1939 3rd St. SE, Canton 44707.

Elizabeth Crook
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Elizabeth Crook, 80, of Edwardsville, Ill., died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Maryville Manor in Maryville, Ill.
Services were Saturday at Saksa Mateer Funeral Home in Edwardsville, Ill. Father Richard J. Rix officiated. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery, Edwardsville, Ill.
Memorial contributions may be made to the College Scholarship Fund, Zeta Nu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, in care of Teri Snowder, 5953 Quercus Grove Road, Edwardsville, Ill. 62025.
She was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Wooster to Scott and Helen (Jones) Mackey and married John A. Crook Jr. on Dec. 27, 1949. He died previously.
Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth (Stephen) LaFond of Aurora, Ill.; a son, John A. (Wannell) Crook of Castle Rock, Colo.; three grandchildren; a brother, David (Gloria) Mackey of Wooster; and nieces and nephews.

Konrad Schwerdtfeger
WOOSTER -- Konrad Schwerdtfeger, 65, 1591 Hickory Lane, died Saturday morning, Aug., 11, 2001, at his home.
Services will be Wednesday evening at 7 at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, Wooster, with the Rev. Robin Meyers officiating.
Friends may call two hours prior to the time of service at the funeral home.

He was born April 22, 1936, in Gottingen, Germany, to Friedel and Gusti (Rehm) Schwerdtfeger.
Surviving are his wife, Inge Gerke Schwerdtfeger, whom he married April 30, 1959; children and spouses Mark and Debbie Casey Schwerdtfeger of Akron and Stephanie and Matthew Daugherty of Columbus; a sister, Ilse Burkhard of Germany; and a brother, Hans Beind Schwerdtfeger of Germany.

Floyd Johnson
WOOSTER -- Floyd Johnson, 65, 945 Washington St., died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at his residence.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, Sherwood Chapel with the Rev. Claude McComas officiating. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, where military rites will be conducted.
Friends may call tonight from 6-8 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Roberts Funeral Home, Sherwood Chapel, P.O. Box 761, Wooster 44691 to help defray expenses.
He was born April 19, 1936, in Lake City, Fla., to Thomas and Alice Roby (Sessions) Johnson and married Joyce Hagadone on April 23, 1988. She survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are children Tom (Lacy) Johnson of Palm Bay, Fla., and Cindy Hamilton of Gainesville, Fla.; stepchildren Ardean Hagadone of Oldsmar, Fla., Debora Ashley of Largo, Fla., Dawn Hagadone of Largo, Fla., Dorla Meadows of Hudson, Fla., Daniel Hagadone of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Dedra Burgess and Dorean Ivino, both of Wooster; three grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Herbert Sommer
WOOSTER -- Herbert J. Sommer, 72, 5852 Cleveland Road, died early Tuesday morning, Aug. 7, 2001, at his residence, following a long illness.
There will be no services. Cremation has taken place. Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, Wooster, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Hospice of Wayne County, 2525-A Back Orrville Road, Wooster 44691.
Mr. Sommer was born on Dec. 11, 1928, in Riceland, Wayne County, to Alvin J. and Susan E. (Moser). He married Barbara Hodgson with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage on Dec. 30, 2000. She survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Susan E. Sommer of Wooster and Deanne M. Sommer of Argenta, Ill.; two sons, James A. (Diane) Sommer of Moreland and Mark E. (Lotta) Sommer of Burbank; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Vernon Sommer of Dalton and two sisters, Mrs. William (Kathryn) Merriman of Dalton and Mrs. Orel (Ruth) Lehman of Orrville.

Sharlott Black
KILLBUCK -- Sharlott Jean Black, 62, of Killbuck, died Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 8, 2001, at her home, following an extended illness.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, with Pastor David Mullins officiating. Burial will be at Killbuck Cemetery, Killbuck.
Friends may call tonight (Friday) from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Family suggests memorial contributions be made to Holmes County Hospice, 931 Wooster Road, Millersburg 44654.
She was born July 8, 1939, in Clay County, W.Va., to Ofa and Garnie (Parker) Beckett and married Doyle Black on July 5, 1981. He died Nov. 22, 1995.
Surviving are her mother, Garnie (Pat) Marshall of Killbuck; six children, Kathy A. Cottrell of Ivydale, W.Va., Debra A. Yeater of Killbuck, Sandra D. Copen of Orlando, Fla., Gary N. Shaffer of Killbuck, Theresa A. Proper of Killbuck and Jerry R. Shaffer of Ashland; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers and a sister of Michigan, six brothers of Killbuck and two half-brothers of Millersburg.

Elizabeth Breyley
SPENCER -- Elizabeth A. Breyley, 72, of Spencer, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at the Cleveland Clinic.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Parker & Son Funeral Home, 202 E. Main St., Spencer, with the Rev. John T. McCourt officiating. Burial will be at Spencer Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home, where Pythian Lodge services will be held at 8:45 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to either The American Lung Association, 1621 Euclid Ave., Suite 930, Cleveland 44115-2107; or the American Heart Association, 1689 East 115th St., Cleveland 44106-3988.
She was born May 29, 1929, in Medina, to Walter and Suzanna (Loch) Stafinski and married Carl Breyley on Nov. 14, 1953. He survives.
Surviving in addition to her husband are daughters, Denise Breyley of Seattle, Debra Breyley of Akron and Diana (Shawn) McCourt of West Salem; a son, Mark (Sherry) Breyley of Homerville; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances West of Medina and brothers, John (Sophie) Stafinski of Medina and Michael (Josephine) Stafinski of Akron.

Kate Gerber
WALNUT CREEK -- Kate Gerber, 100, of Walnut Creek, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Walnut Hills Nursing Home.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Walnut Creek Mennonite Church with the Revs. Ross Miller and Matt Hamsher officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday from 6-9 p.m. at the church and Sunday from 1-2 p.m. at the church.
Arrangements are being handled by Butler-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek.

She was born Nov. 16, 1900, in Walnut Creek, to Daniel W. and Barbara (Miller) Hershberger and married Harry Gerber Sr. on Feb. 7, 1925. He died Oct. 19, 1990.
Surviving are three sons, Wayne (Maxine) Gerber of Sugarcreek, Harry Jr. (Ruth) Gerber of Walnut Creek and Stanley (Barb) Gerber of Sugarcreek; two daughters, Mrs. Doran (Alice) Horrisberger of Walnut Creek and Mrs. Budd (June) Miller of Berlin; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Fritz Riebe
SARASOTA, Fla. -- Fritz Riebe, 54, of Sarasota, Fla., died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001.
Friends may call Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Home Chapel, 140 E. Venice Ave., Venice, Fla.

He was born Dec. 1, 1946, in Lodi, to Melvin R. and Bette (Heeter) Riebe.

Howard Fulton
SHELBY -- Howard A. Fulton, 89, 2343 Myers Road, died Wednesday morning, Aug. 8, 2001, at MedCentral/Shelby Hospital, after a brief illness.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home, Loudonville, with the Rev. John Stevens officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Perrysville.
Friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30-10 a.m. at the funeral home.

He was born Jan. 8, 1912, in Medina County, to Millard E. and Amanda E. (Heestand) Fulton and married Lois King. She died in 1979.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and John Hess of Shelby; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Lucille Hobell of Bradenton, Fla. and Josephine Henry of Leesburg, Ind.

Virginia Wilson
WOOSTER -- Virginia F. Wilson, 48, 366 W. South St., Wooster, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at her residence.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, Sherwood Chapel, with the Rev. O.J. Thompson officiating. Entombment will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

She was born Sept. 7, 1952, in Falson, W.Va., to Russell and Jessie (Rowe) Hebb. She married Dan Wilson on March 7, 1987. He survives.
In addition to her husband, other survivors include children, Sonja (Cornell) Witherspoon of the home, Kelli Mann of Wooster and David (Teona) Crouch of Columbus, stepdaughters, Jessica and Cassie Wilson of Shreve; six grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Ronald "Buck" (Jennie) Hebb of Orrville, Tina Theil of Wooster, Margaret (Jim) Pelfrey of Marshallville, Sheila (Larry) Pyle of Holmesville, several nieces and nephews.

Rev. John Mahaffey
SUGARCREEK -- The Rev. John W. Mahaffey, 46, 1996 Prysi Road NW, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Aultman Hospital in Canton, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Union Hill United Methodist Church in Sugarcreek with the Revs. Mark George, Alston Hall and David Oliver officiating. Burial will be at Union Hill Cemetery in Sugarcreek.
Friends may call Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Union Hill United Methodist Church in Sugarcreek.
The family requests memorials be made to East Ohio Evangelical Fellowship Camp, c/o Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 397, Sugarcreek 44681.

He was born Dec. 20, 1954, in Galion, to Richard E. and Dorothy (Kunkel) Mahaffey and married Lynette Vose on Nov. 24, 1979. She survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Erin Mahaffey of the home; a son, William Jacob Mahaffey of the home; his mother of Galion and four nephews.

MILLERSBURG -- Clara Jane Snyder, 74, of Millersburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Sunset View Nursing Home, Millersburg, following an extended illness.
Graveside services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Millersburg with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Walther officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, is handling arrangements.
She was born Sept. 17, 1926, in Holmes County, to Samuel Edward and Emma (Brown) Snyder.
Surviving are five sisters, Beulah Bordner of Bolivar, Mary Gregory of Orrville, Beatrice Gray, Ada Randles and Phyllis (Robert) Schmucker, all of Millersburg; two nieces; seven nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
